This is the oldest pub in Newport, so it seemed rude not to call in for a drink. I had a half pint of a good hand pulled ale. My partner had a pint of stout. It is worth a visit if you’re interested in traditional beer.

The oldest pub in Newport circa 1530. It's dimly lit with high backed wooden seats and little booths. Oak beams in places and a warm inviting atmosphere. It's a Samuel Smith's pub with old pumps on the bar and is also featured in the 2023 good bear guide. On the 1st Thursday of the month at 2pm there is a local history talk by a local resident. I loved this pub in the heart of Newport and also very close to the the railway station.

A large group of feminist women attempted to drink at this pub today but were denied entry purely on the bases on them being women and feminists, ,this is absolutely unacceptable in this day and age. Many of the women in the group are lesbians which makes me wonder if that was the reason for the denial of enter, if so then you are committing a hate crime and breaching the equality act.

Sam Smith's pubs are old fashioned and full of character and normally very cheap. This one is the dearest pub in the area a glass of wine and a pint of bitter was £4 dearer than anywhere else in the area, probably the reason why it was half empty. Ok it was a Monday lunchtime but the place was dead. Total of three people came and went in 75 minutes. Asked for a menu from two members of staff who were far too engrossed in a long conversation to serve this solitary customer. My meal was placed silently and out of reach on the long table where I was seated. ( very strange ) Steak and kidney pie was fine, niggardly portion of chips and stone cold overboiled vegetables. As I had time to kill I had a coffee and read a couple of the three day old newspapers. Only thing different from a dreary Funeral parlour was the lack of piped organ music. When leaving I saw a sign saying it was one of the top 50 pubs in Wales. Someone has a strange sense of humour !

The Murenger is not a pub. Forget about pubs. The Murenger is a way of life. These ancient timbers exhale the centuries. The landlord is wise and learned. The shelves are laden with books. The conversation is smart, even the floorboards join in, squeaking in Latin. And the beer, it is the most perfect ale your lips will ever know. It begins as one thing, and as you drink, it becomes something else, something deep and rich and sublime.

I honestly don't know why I haven't reviewed the Murenger before since I've going there since 1972 when I first came to Newport. Now I live in Monmouth my visits are less frequent but neverheless regular. It's hard to have 'a local' when you live 25 miles away, but I regard it as one. The Murenger is a haven of peace for much of the day, busier at nights with book readings and other activities. It attracts interesting people, each with a story to tell, its motto perhaps being 'I think therefore I drink' - or perhaps it's the other way round.

Recommended to visit by a friend. The Tudor-bethan facade marked this out from the other student orientated watering holes. What struck me on entering was the traditional look and feel. This is one for real ale fans. At first sight it didn't appear to have the same range as a free house. This is misleading as the array of Sam Smith ales, ciders, spirits and spritzer type soft drinks is diverse. I drunk a beautifully kept India Pale Ale but the Extra Stout was well recommended as is the 10% Yorkshire Stingo.

I'd walked around Newport looking for somewhere to eat, and for the most part I try and avoid chains, preferring to give my money to home-run establishments in support of local business. Walking around the bend on High St you cannot fail to notice this place as it seems to ooze history, especially with its tudor-style timber frame exterior.Checking the menu on the front door, there are local accolades from historical societies and I learned upon entering that there's been a pub in this place since 1530!A little sparse inside, but I imagine this place is absolutely heaving on a Friday & Saturday night. An olde worlde interior too, to match the exterior. Just added to the charm & ambience of the place. A great selection of real ales, and very reasonably priced food - just a shame I was alone and was unable to take advantage of a 2 for £10 meal.Sign of a great pub too, the barman came over for a chat and we made smalltalk. It looks unbelievable from the outside, clearly a cheap copy of a pub built in Tudor times. Except it's real, sandwiched unsympathetically between two grander but less interesting edifices. Would you really expect to find a pub built in 1530 in the middle of Newport? Of course not. Inside it's dark and dingy and welcoming. The host is chatty, and there's plenty of space. No TV is the policy, which is perhaps a pity when there's a good rugby game going, but there are often lots of international folk there anyway. The food was good and cheap. Of course, it's not Wetherspoon's, but is that what you really wanted?

We visited on Sunday afternoon on our way to a Dragons game. The team lost (as usual) but this pub is a winner! The Murenger is a lovely old pub - all wooden beams and old photos - and is run by a landlord who's clearly passionate about what he does. We had a warm welcome and enjoyed a simple but well cooked pub lunch. The chips are great and everything tasted fresh. The beer on offer looked really good and we will revisit for a proper sampling session! The place is scrupulously clean - my daughter siad she's never been to such clean pub toilets ever. The Murenger prides itself on being a bastion against the super pub and it is also proud of its rich Newport heritage (the collection of 'protest' mugs is worth a look). Definitely worth a visit.

We were excited to try Bar.code, but unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. Once seated, we were informed of a 45-minute wait for food due to understaffing. Not wanting to have to wait too long we ordered food immediately and let them get on with things whilst we decided what we wanted to drink. While we understood the situation, the wait for food ended up being much longer. Sadly the cocktails weren't great (which probably should have been obvious from the descriptions of the generic alcohol being used) and after a couple we realised that it had already been over an hour since we'd ordered our food. My wife enquired as to what was going on and we were assured that our order was the next being prepared... 15 minutes passed and we were told that our order was being worked on currently... 15 more minutes passed and we were assured that our order was on its way out. We left, explaining our disappointment to a member of staff on the way out. While we appreciate that the restaurant was understaffed, giving customers unrealistic expectations and then failing to deliver on those promises is unacceptable. Whilst we assume this was an isolated incident, we wont be returning to find out.
