Ordered a double vodka. It was watered down or non existent. We couldn’t taste any alcohol or smell any in the glass. We asked for another vodka and we’re refused as we had drank 1/3 of the glass. The atmosphere is great if you are under 25. It is too busy to enjoy a meal. We stayed 15 minutes, drank our non alcoholic drink and left.

Was one hen night last night with 3 other ladies. Had been to other pubs in the area but our last stop was here as we were looking forward to the DJ. The pub was rammed full of young people. As a mature lady I was very surprised when a member of security told us that hen parties were not allowed so unless we took off our plastic headbands and the bride to be her sash we would have to leave. We were go smacked as we weren't rowdy at all. If we hadn't already ordered our drinks we would have left there and then. We ordered a taxi and left. What a horrible thing to do. Anyway we found a great pub in Cwmbran with DJ and disco and had a brilliant night! Won't be visiting again!

Would like to edit my initial review. I was contacted by the staff and the fine is going to be cancelled. Thank you very much. Received a debt recovery notice for parking too long in the car park. Didn’t receive the initial parking fine, just straight to debt recovery. Used my blue badge. I saw no notice saying that blue badges were exempt. You have lost mine and my families custom. Bar staff great… a little slow taking our order food atmosphere ok… food very nice but… a little expensive for a Sunday rost… only 1 selection of Vegetables… Broccoli, but no carrot 🥕 or peas 🫛 which I think is a staple in a rost. Sweet & mash was served (which I don’t like), cauliflower cheese was purchased separately. The non plated portions (not meat/ rosters/ parsnips) were small for 3 people for the amount we paid for in my opinion, only seamed enough for 1 person. This was the only letdown in my opinion. Would I go again… ? Would like too but would need to check what was on the plate.

After reading the reviews, I was excited to come here for Sunday lunch. A very busy pub, very clean. We arrived and were seated, we were 10mins late as the postcode on website took us to centre of Newport. Slow in taking our order. Now it’s Sunday roast. You know how many covers you can do, it’s not difficult (I’ve been a publican all my life). They had one additional side you could order - cauliflower cheese. We ordered at 1:45, and they were sold out. Of the only side they do to accompany a roast with over 2 hours and further bookings to come. Now 2:20pm. We ordered garlic bread and our mains at 1:45pm. No food had arrived and no one checked on us. They need our table back at 3:30pm. I called the waiter for an update on our order… only to be told due to an internet issue our order did not make the kitchen. They apologised, and promised discount on desert. Dinners arrived… no garlic bread. Now 3:10pm, they clear our table and the bar lady then makes it clear they have another booking at 3:30pm. No deserts were ordered. And they put live music on in the middle of service. Live music on a Sunday is great for a pub. I do it all the time. Wait until service is finished and the singer is not next to a table eating with family. The food that we did have was ok. The roast potatoes were good as was the Yorkshire pudding. The veg on the other hand, very bland. Which makes the selling out of cauliflower cheese and hour and a half into service more baffling. Great potential here. Service needs massive improvement.

This pub has been updated and is looking very good however lunch was poor for the price. We ordered fish finger butty with salt & finger chips which cost £10 each which we thought rather expensive but thought oh well it must be good for that price. When it arrived we were shocked to say the least it consisted of a mini brioche type roll with two tiny over cooked mini fish fillet and 9 chips stacked with some rocket on the side.We were both very hungry & ate, it the chips were quite nice but I don’t think we will bother eating there for these prices not at lunch time we can honestly say we both felt unsatisfied maybe if it had been a more ample portion and tasty we would of happily paid the price. The staff member was friendly and it was nicely renovated but it is in an area were there are many places with deals on lunches, we ate in the Goldcroft up the road the other week which is also a very nice pub and they do a lunch menu two for £12 and 5 of us eat there one child & the rest from this menu and we all found it very enjoyable and cook perfectly.

I was a bit dubious about booking for our lunch club as The Bull has never really been a foodie destination in the past. Our lunch however was excellent and in really cosy surroundings. I had the chicken liver parfait which was lovely and came with parmesan crisp and plum chutney. Most of us had the creamy chicken with lemon and thyme and a selection of wild mushrooms. It was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. I felt it was good value at £15 for 2 courses so will definately be back soon. The pub has been beautifully restored and has lots of cosy nooks and crannies in which to sit. Parking is charged at 70p an hour but you get the first hour refunded. After a lovely visit to the Roman Baths, this pub seemed ideal for lunch as it was next door. The welcome was frosty from the bar person who seemed to want to put us off eating there by saying they only had burgers. There were no real ales as the youngsters didn't like them, but the menu showed Bangers & Mash amongst other dishes which we chose. Stella took the place of real ale, and to be fair it was good as was the food, cheap as well. There the goodwill ended, whilst watching football on the TV happily eating our grub Horse racing replaced footy with the explanation, it was only Brighton. We left soon after and as I'm concerned never to return again and left the Landlady and her cronies to watch their horse run in the race she turned the TV over for.

You know when asked if your meal was enjoyable and you say, "Okay" to be polite, and they take that as a compliment, that perhaps the standard isn't great. This wasn't awful, but it was miserable. Dull, bland, lacking, all those sort of adjectives.

The pub hasn't changed in years and caters mainly for a younger local clientele. It is what it is and remains popular with the people that frequent it. Has a pool table and range of beers. Could do with a major refit but aiming for its regular locals and every town needs one of these. Far better pubs if visiting but popular for a reason if that's your cup of tea.

The pub was nice to look at and that's where the positive aspects end. The staff were rude, disinterested and short in their manner. One, in particular, a middle-aged woman, refused point blank to be courteous in any way. She was dismissive, unhelpful and really eager to ensure we had the most awkward experience of all time. No task was too little effort and no request went unresented. The food was alright; I'd have happily paid more for anything else. Really good parking spot for the Roman museum though, so there's that.

This is the 2nd time I've reviewed this place. First time loved it 2nd time loved it more (I'm English;-) atmosphere was great the banter was flowing! It was busy but service wasn't too long await. If I lived closer I think I'd be happy to make this my local. Bar staff friendly. Had food this time (beer and a burger) and got to admit the burger was very tasty and a decent size. Like most chains the chips didn't look fantastic or overflowing on the plate but it was empty. Not sure if it's under new management but who ever is running it seems to be doing a good job and trying to bring the customers back. Definitely worth a visit for a big sporting event tvs and big screens for everyone to see and quiet ares at the back for those just wanting a drink.

Note I think this place is now under new management? I'd check all their reviews 1st. We went for a Fathers day lunch in 2016. There was only 1 other couple in the dining area at this same time who like us waited 2.1/2 hours (from when orders were placed) to get served our food which had only been microwaved heated. We traveled out to tour the Big Pitt that morning and decided to stop off here on route home for Lunch. My hubby suggested we eat at the Pub across the road; but because we'd paid to park next door to this Pub I encouraged him to dine here! In Hein Sight I wished I'd have listened to him; especially given it was his Fathers Day Treat! By the time we ordered through until we left was 3.1/2 hours for a nasty tasting meal; The other couple was the same!

This is the oldest pub in Newport, so it seemed rude not to call in for a drink. I had a half pint of a good hand pulled ale. My partner had a pint of stout. It is worth a visit if you’re interested in traditional beer.

Lovely place with really friendly staff, I have a nut allergy and I was put totally at ease, was shown an allergy book where everything was clear, and staff were really thorough and knowledgeable. Would really recommend!

Had a fantastic meal here on Friday of chicken with a garlic and mushroom sauce. The chicken was succulent and the sauce really tasty and garlicky and there was plenty of it. The jacket potato with it was cooked to perfection and there was just the right amount of salad and peas on the side too. We followed this with delicious carrot cake and cream which was all washed down with a reasonably priced bottle of sauvignon blanc. Would definitely recommend the Vic to my friends.
