Coffee Corner in Newport

I had bought a drink and spent several hours at the establishment on my laptop ( as other customers did) without making any noise or disruptions. I returned the next day and within 5 minutes of arriving I was abruptly asked to leave by the owner. When I asked why, he said I hadn't purchased enough beverages the day before to warrant my stay, despite there being ample empty tables available. Even though I had never heard of such a thing, I was sympathetic and offered to buy drinks every so often this time around but I was met with hostility, blatant refusal and told he just did not want me there. What truly escalated the situation was the owner's threat to involve law enforcement. When I questioned the grounds for such drastic action, his response was that I was taking up a table another customer could use. I explained how I was also a customer like everyone else, I wasn't disturbing anyone and lots of empty tables. I have never experienced such a thing in ANY public establishment before, leading me to suspect it was racial discrimination. I don't like to throw around such serious accusations but the reasoning the owner gave for asking me leave while allowing other customers who were doing the exact same thing to stay seems to be the only explanations. Of course, he did not actually call the police because I defended myself and he also knew he had no grounds, especially since I was not disturbing/violating his property in any way. However, I chose to leave to my aown accord because I never want to be somewhere where I am not welcome. Subsequent discussions with other local coffee shop owners confirmed my suspicions; there are no grounds or maximum time limits for customer stays, especially during non-peak hours. This experience has left a sour taste in my mouth. I'm sure the atmosphere is fine for most but if you are a person of colour I urge others to think twice before visiting Coffee Corner Response: Seeing as the owner has admitted there was CCTV that recorded the whole conversation and setting I'm sure he'd be more than happy to show the coffee shop being 'busy'. Because like I mentioned while I was there, there were a number of empty tables. Saying I had been there for 30 minutes is completely untrue. And I'm sure your CCTV camera has a time stamp and can vouch for that. I had just sat down and plugged my laptop in. In addition, when I said I was happy to buy a drink the owner did not agree so I am unsure what he wanted me to do. It is clear he just did not want me to stay . It is also extremely unproffessional to apply this so called policy to certain customers and not all. I was not argumentative, I was defending my right to stay. Tasty food ,but only 1 gluten free food ,apple + raspberry muffin wife says they are scrumptious lovely clean place friendly staff lively atmosphere ,lots different coffee tea ,hot chocolate with cream +chocolate flakes ,just go and indulge yourself, easy to get to ,toilets just outside +disabled to ,

Stopped in here for a drink before going bowling. Had a latte and it was easily one of the best tasting cups of coffee I've ever had. Simply superb.

The US office S4EP5&6 As soon as I set foot in the cafe,Deja vu kicks in and I left myself wondering have I been here? I swear, theres one in Cardiff? Anyways, nice hot chocolate and comfy seats, very busy but manage to find space. Workers also clear the table very quickly.

The staff, (NOT the manager!) Are lovely, but look like they are loosing the will to live. I've heard the manager loose it on staff members and that's just not on in front of customer in any circumstances. Coffee is ok, nothing special, cakes overpriced. Milkshake is the thing they do well and my kids like them. I feel sorry for the staff there.

Lovely coffee shop, staff very friendly and coffee was spot on. Plenty of seating when I arrived on a Saturday Afternoon, good atmosphere. Will be back when I'm in Newport again!

Very nice café. Friendly staff, very accommodating. I went there to study recently. Peaceful. As long as you make a purchase, you may stay as long as you like. But obviously, if its busy. Buy another drink. It's only polite.

Expensive average coffee. I had a black iced americano that was charged at the same price as an iced coffee with milk and syrups…and they put two cubes of ice in it, which melted straight away. In response to the reply - I still say over £4 is too much to pay for two shots of espresso with tap water and a few ice cubes (it certainly was not 6, as claimed, and they melted in a minute, leaving me with a watered-down drink that wasn’t ice cold) - I have never paid that much for an iced americano…in independent or chain stores.

By chance, I arrived at this cafe to have a coffee, but I ended up having lunch .The cafe is clean and rustically decorated. The food was delicious

Went in for latte and cappuccino, was NOT told that they only had full milk until I got my coffee and tasted it to find out that they had used whole milk. No apology and not inform about only having whole milk. Supermarket couple of minutes away but they did not get any other milk.

Had a nice lunch here and the server was very polite dispute the card machines playing up she kept professional. Food was lovely too. Card machines really need fixing though. Edit: amending review from over a year ago, card machines fixed ! It is now our go too spot. However, the music in-store recently (Nov 2022) has been rather loud I couldn't compete when talking.

A very nice cafe. Their Mud Cake is good. They do the best muffins in Newport. Nice toppings and always really fresh.

Very disapointed after many years of visiting this place. Asked for 2 chicken and bacon toasties. They arrived with cheese in and one with hardly any filling. My wife is dairy intolerant so could not eat hers. ( nothing displayed on package to say cheese..sign just said Chicken and bacon ) I returned mine as there was hardly any chicken or bacon in it Very poor

Amazing place with amazing staff, come here a lot and no trouble anytime. The only ready I didn't give it 5 stars is the fact that birds do tend to fly in to the coffee every so often, again this is not coffee corners fault however it doesn't put the best picture in your head while enjoying your coffee.

It was busy when I visited but the staff were friendly and efficient, with the queue moving quickly. A nice choice of drinks are available as well as a good selection of snacks and cakes.

Coffee and food is nice. The stuff sometimes could be a little bit nicer but it is a good place to enjoy a coffee.

Lovely coffee comfy seats good service but the toasted paninis are rather tasteless and lack garnish and crisps that are usually supplied by competitors. We shared two different ones, chicken jalfrezi, and chicken and chorizo both substandard.

There is nothing in the world better than a Coffee Corner Toasted Breakfast Bagel. Perfectly panini-crisp on the outside, then you sink into the soft cheese and egg, and then you hit bacon. It's flippin' transcendent.

The coffee shops really nice Decor very minimal very clean staff are very welcome and helpful the coffee is okay I had a decaf could be a little bit stronger tasting but you’re not gonna get what you want always

Very clean despite being a busy day (Newport marathon and 10k) very quickly served and all staff were extremely friendly and chatty. Cake was stunning as was the hot chocolate

Giving two stars only, because the person who prepared my cup of coffee had extremely dirty hands and nails. Personal hygiene is really important when you serve food and drinks.

What a beautiful place for tea break. Just exploded it while strolling around. Beautiful place just at the corner in shopping mall. Nice atmosphere, cool staff n service is good. Everything was soo soo delicious cake, muffin, chai latte & cup of tea, just brilliant. Thanks for the quality time i spent there. Recommended

Had two muffins here this afternoon, great service and both muffins were fantastic. I'd go more often if I lived closer tbh.

Bit of a wait to be served as busy, but not to bad. Service was pleasant and friendly. Covid-19 measures in place, tables cleaned after each use. Good selection of refreshments to eat in or take away.

1st visit and very enjoyable. Easy to sit in and very clean. All staff followed social distancing. Lovely cappuccino and a ham,cheese n tomato croissant, which was toasted really nice. Will defo return

We had coffee and hot chocolate which was very nice, but i would like to bring your attention to your cleanliness, when a customer got up from a table that table was not cleaned for the nrxt customer, one table was rubbed round with a cloth no spray just whiped and her apron was dirty and she was servng food, not a very nice experience i think you ought to raise your game as most of us are trying to keep covid at bay

Well today was a special day for myself and my partner as we had got engaged. After leaving jeffries jewellery shop we decided to pop into muffin break for a coffee and cake. We were greeted by two unfriendly young girls who were serving, the smaller one stating straight away that there was no hot food being served, that was fine as it was 5pm, we ordered two lattes and two cakes, we were then informed by the smaller young girl that she was only excepting card payment, to which my partner replied I only have cash to which she rolled her eyes and said "OK cash then". My partner asked for a certain slice of cake and once again she rolled her eyes, very very rude, neither had no manners! The cake were both very dry.. The whole experience was appauling, and I will never go in there again. Thanks

My tea and fruit bread was fine but on asking for dairy free spread was told by manager that noone asks for it so dont have it to which i commented that considering you sell vegan goods you should have vegan spread i was offered jam which i think i paid for .not sure if all muffin breaks dont have spread but is something that should be in all muffin breaks.

Good size seating area, clean and tidy. Milk shakes very tasty. Tried a choc chip muffin which they warmed up but found it rather bland and dry which was disappointing. Atmosphere a little bland too, quite sparsely fitted out so felt a little ‘cold’.

Very bland toasted sandwich,no garnish. They need to raise their game and serve it with a few crisps or salad garnish. Couldn't even hear my husband when some noisy person was emptying the dish washer.

Cakes were great. Coffee was great. Did go at the end of the day so staff seemed worn out. But pleasant nevertheless.

Disappointing visit. My coffee cake was dry and lacking in coffee flavour. My small flat white made up for it, however, with a nice medium flavour.

One of my favourite coffee shops, food is absolutely fantastic and always fresh. Staff are friendly and very helpful.

Never very impressed with their sandwiches or coffee tbh. Quite tasteless and stale on my last visit. Not sure I would go here again. Its also very noisy due to the coffee machine and echoey design.
