What a beautiful location and a hotel with so much potential which is not , in my opinion, being nurtured. Check in was efficient and our room was satisfactory, the wall behind the bed really needed dusting and cobwebbing , it wasn’t just a couple of days worth . Dinner was delicious, excellent quality, but the two young servers , extremely polite but like headless chickens , there didn’t appear to be a senior member to give them support and direction hence there was a lack of attention to detail which could so simply be rectified with better training . Breakfast was also delicious and all in all the experience was positive. The Dragon just needs a bit of a good polish and TLC to restore its roar .

Visited for dinner with my wife and two friends. First time we have dined at The Dragon for at least 12 years. The place has been completely transformed, with nice decor and is well thought out. We dined at 7.30 pm on a Friday night and it was busy with a nice buzz. We had a table looking out onto the square and we were served by very smart and courteous staff. The food was somewhat mediocre, my wife had fish and chips but the batter was soggy. I had the sirloin stake which I asked to be cooked medium-rare, sadly it was overcooked. This was advertised as an 8oz sirloin steak. No way was this going to weigh 8oz. The steak was far too thin and at £23 a pop somewhat expensive. Food wise I think there is some way to go yet.

We were last in the Dragon a couple of years ago and had a pleasant dinner. This time, however, things were very different. We both ordered burgers. They were large, but dry and stodgy. They took a lot of chewing. We only ate them because we were hungry. The chips accompanying them were fine but these were some of the worst burgers either of us have had in a long time.

Booked in for breakfast as a non resident of the Hotel & thoroughly enjoyed it! Large selection of fresh pastries & preserves, fresh coffee, selection of teas, fresh fruit & homemade banana bread that was delicious! Followed by a full Welsh cooked breakfast. All very tasty & service was great. Definitely worth a visit if you are passing through beautiful Montgomery.

We had been looking forward to returning to the Bistro after good memories from about 5yrs earlier (although the service was slow then). However service was exceptionally slow. It took over an hour to get to main courses. They didn’t have all the menu options. Additionally there was a lot of flies! These landed on our food and our hands and face! The worst bit was the lasagne, my father ended up with a mouthful of what seemed like sand. It’s a shame because it’s a lively setting and the food was otherwise very good. We fed back to the waitress and she was apologetic.

We went for a carvery it took 45 mins for it to come they mixed up the orders. They brought two dishes of veg for 6 people after asking for serving spoons we waited another 5 mins which then left the main meal cold the staff had a bad attitude. On complaining we all had 50% off each dish which was good. Would not recommend and wouldn’t go again.

We went for a meal and was extremely disappointed - the service was awful! Our starters, apparently, went to another table - though I cannot imagine why they weren't send back... we did have a surprise, after a long wait of more than half an hour, when our mains turned up. The waitress argued with us when we asked her about the starters; saying we had had them already - which we had not... then the meal itself was over priced for what it was, and a great disappointment. The fish was all batter; the chips were tough and the lamb was on a bed of tomatoes that would have fed the 5,000! Plus they were tasteless! On payment, we complained but no discount was offered, just the information our starters had gone to that 'other table'... if that was true. Sadly this was not the first time (but it is the last...) we have had to complain about the service we have had. I know there a cost of living crisis but this meal cost over £40. We shall not be returning.

We have not been to The Dragon before so did not know what to expect. First of all it was market day and parking was difficult. However, the staff very kindly directed me towards their car park, which is at the rear of the hotel. The hotel itself is a delightful place with stone floors and there was memorabilia dotted about the place. My wife, had fish and chips and, as she has a very small appetite, asked for about half a dozen chips and no mushy peas. I went for the beef burger. When the food arrived, Lesley had been given a full load of chips and mushy peas. She ate what she could and said it was absolutely delicious. I could not fault the burger. The bun was even toasted and hot - not something that is come across much these days. It had been described as being accompanied by crispy bacon and in my experience most places this is not what is served. Not at The Dragon - the bacon was beautifully crisp and accompanied the very succulent burger. On top of that, the service was friendly and attentive. Will we return? Most definitely and, in fact, we were looking for a place to take our daughter and son-in-law when they come over from Australia. We have found just the place to take in The Dragon.

You can order to eat in the bar or the restaurant itself. We found our food to be very good indeed, while also being reasonably priced. As a party of 4 two guests had the steaks which were pronounced as excellent. One guest had fish and chips which was also very good while I had the gammon, which was lovely. I also had the cheeseboard to finish which I can heartily recommend. Overall, essentially good pub-style grub at a good price. The service was also good with staff being very attentive. Our wines were very acceptable for the money.

We had just walked around the castle and then up to the County Town Monument, which had fantastic views from Clee to Cader Idris in full sunshine, so we were ready for a hearty meal. We wanted a sit down meal in the open air rather than a takeaway. The Dragon didn't disappoint. It was our first time here and we were impressed with the lunch menu. We sat in the covered area in the shade of a tree and although we were by the car park rather than in a garden, it was still lovely to sit outside. Indoors had a range of different rooms, well spaced tables, full of charm. The food was really good, fritata and fries for one of us and taragon chicken for the other. All tasted lovely and quite good value at about £30 including drinks. We would definitely recommend the Dragon to anyone.

As my Parents live In Newtown We will often come for Lunch or dinner at The Dragon, we were last here in January 2020 for my Mother's 80th birthday which went brilliantly and couldn't be faulted in any way at all.It was just such a shame on this occasion that what started as a great evening with great and efficient service ended up being rather shambolic. The main meals were all cooked perfectly and enjoyed, but when it came to the desserts we were desserted pardon the pun !! we were left with a mini chalkboard of deserts to choose from and we waited and waited and waited for the waiter/ess to come back but they didn't we tried to attract their attention but we were just ignored in the end we left having paid the bill and mentioned this to the lady on reception whose head it seemed to go over. I know we are living in challenging times but this should never have happend and upset my Parents as they so wanted the evening to be enjoyed by all of us. your comments on this would be most welcome.

I thought we ordered 2 steak sandwiches which turned out to nearly all grisle, when asked if the meal was okay I explained the problem (Which you could clearly see on the plates) the lady said she would have a chat with the chef who would speak with the butcher. Well there is fat and grisle on meat but a GOOD CHEF would dress the steak accordingly. You couldn't pick the sandwich up ! Sloppy Bread ! Grizzly Fatty Meat ! My wife and I recently stayed at The Dragon as part of a larger group on a walking break, eating in the restaurant on the two evenings that we stayed here. The accommodation was clean, pleasant and comfortable and more than adequate for a short break. The bar served a good variety of Ales and the staff here were excellent and really couldn't do enough for you. The meals in the restaurant varied between OK and very good and this very much seemed to depend upon what you ordered. The fish and chips was massive, but they did do smaller fish and chip portions if asked for and for most people this smaller portion (still quite large in itself) was more than adequate. I had a steak one night which was beautifully cooked. The breakfasts were varied and the Welsh Breakfasts very tasty.

We've previously visited in December with friends for a Christmas meal and enjoyed it. High hopes were expected again when we came in August, with the same group of friends. I had ordered the lasagna, also my 10 year had ordered the lasagna. We both had ordered it with chips. Service was relaxed, not too much of issue. When the lasagna arrive it was steaming hot. Whilst eating the lasagna, the béchamel sauce wasn't quite what I had expected for lasagna, it was thick and claggy. The layers were not how you would expect them. My 10 year who is a big lover of lasagna had also struggled with this. When eating the meat I was unaware of the bacon hiding. Note, I don't eat bacon as it doesn't agree with me. If I had know that traditional ragu sauce had bacon in it or it was labelled as an ingredient on the menu I would have ordered something different. Mentioned it to a waitress or some senior staff at the time. She assured me that she'll speak to the chef and alter this on the menu. There was no offer of another meal or double checking that I was okay. After plates were taken we were able to order dessert. Whilst waiting for dessert i didn't feel great and had to go to the ladies, unfortunately the lasagna had made a reappearance. After being sick, I found a waitress to cancel my dessert order (I love desserts). I ended up ordering a tea to settle my stomach, at no point did anyone from the restaurant come over to check to see how I was. This time I walked out feeling disappointed with the experience.

Haven’t been been for a while and won’t be rushing back. The food was disappointing to say the least. My lasagne had very little in terms of meat but allot of pasta, the garlic bread was poor, a thin slice of baguette where they used to do fabulous mini loaves and the menu is poor in terms of choice. We did intend to have a pud, but after waiting 20mins or more for someone to clear our plates and order we decided to leave. Bar staff also need training on how to serve drinks., (lime in Hendricks- really....) Being local, the Dragon WAS one of our go to places.

Tried the Indian Take-away menu at the hotel last night, a service the Dragon offers on the first Friday of each month. We anticipated an excellent meal and were very disappointed, in fact disgusted. The beef in the Dum Gosht was just thick slices of gristly, rubbery flavourless beef , gave up trying to eat it. The sauce was almost non-existent not remotely spicey or flavoursome, making the dish very dry and unpalatable. The fish dish likewise had virtually no sauce which was thick and dry. Whilst the fish itself was OK the dish was served only with a small serving of salad making it much more suitable as a starter dish, not a main course. And the Naan - oh my gosh ! - disgraceful ! ! ! Nann should be light and fluffy, this was thin, brittle, hard, tiny and I would have done a better Naan from the supermarket. How the chef can get away with sending out meals of such desperate quality is beyond me. Total waste of money. We shall stick to a proper take-away in future and avoid the take-away nights at the Dragon.

Some adectives to describe the restaurant, which is a mix of gastropub and restaurant, really. Nice and lively atmosphere, brilliant service, and good food, which doesn’t pretendcto be anything else than it is: tasty, traditional English/Welsh ’grub’. I had smoked salmon for starter, good, and sirloin for main. As for the sirloin, very good meat, but I would maybe have expected a bit more from the gravy, maybe some else veggie-wise than just haricots verts and peas, and the chips vere more like what you expect to have in McDonalds. However, all-in-all, good, and related to the price, almost excellent!

Stumbled upon the pretty town of Montgomery (castle, ancient church, fine town square & intriguing independent shops) by accident on a wet November day to find this ancient "black & white" heavily beamed former coaching inn. Huge character not spoiled by mildly "contemporary" feel to comfortably furnished bar/den/dining area (not the dining room) at the back of the inn. Food imaginative and freshly cooked food takes The Dragon up the league table from pub grub (NB have not used formal dining room & main menu). Both gammon steak and fresh fish excellent along with pizzas. Montgomery seems to be a "walking centre" so expect lots of walkers in the hiking season. Have lunched at The Dragon several times and will return.

Booked a table for 8 for Sunday lunch and we had a very warm welcome. The service was all very good and the food was very hot and freshly cooked, would definitely recommend the lamb. The bar area looked very cosy as well for a few beers

The largest piece of gammon I have ever encountered - very tasty and filling. The Bistro has a great look about it, a mixture of old and new. The pleasant staff were casual and efficient with an aim to please. Prices were fine and the menu choice was good. Not very large so it is wise to book ahead. The table was sticky and needed to be re-varnished.

The roast beef was a bit gristly and over cooked for my liking. The veg was basic but the portion size was good

We stayed for 2 nights last week. Very Polite from the first phone call. Lovely old building and made very welcome. We were in room 9 on the top floor. Not too many stairs but no lifts for anyone who had problems. We had no bother with any noise coming from the Bar area. it would have been nice to have had a proper shower in the bedroom. As the roof was sloping it was impossible to have one on the wall. We had the unit in the bath which was very narrow.

This place could be brilliant. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is nice. They let you taste the beer and they have a lot of local ones on tap. All good. As a pub it's fantastic. I ordered fish and chips and it came as a huge portion and was really nice. Only problem was I had to continually fight off flies whilst eating it and that was indoors. There were dozens of them in the room. I appreciate it's difficult when the weather is hot to control the insect population but getting staff to spray when it's quiet is a low cost but ineffective solution. They really need a machine to go on the wall in the dining room and they need it urgently. As a customer you can't help wondering it this is the extent of the flies in here, what's it like in the kitchen and is anyone bothering to fight them off in there? Also the glasses were a but grubby and the table was slightly sticky.

There was a street fair on and This place was very busy with food and room bookings but also as it’s been so hot these days they have also signed up to some water refillable scheme so if anyone has a refillable bottle can just go in and ask for water,I know tap water is free anyway but some do refuse if your not buying anything or eating in so well done dragon would highly recommended as I know the food and staff here is brilliant

We dropped in without booking hoping to get lunch. I was with my friend and her disabled dad. They were able to offer us a table and from the start the experience was excellent. The staff member ( I think it was the Manager) came out to the car park to see if we needed any help with the wheelchair. We were promptly seated and drinks and food order taken quickly. All members of staff were polite and friendly. The food came in a good waiting time and we were all really pleased with the food. I had an ultimate burger, my friend a Thai beef dish and her dad an all day breakfast. Great portion sizes, hot and all tasty. Really reasonably priced as well ! Thankyou for such a great experience

Friendly staff, hearty, simple menu, great coffee. We stopped here after walking Crickhowell to Brecon via the Black Mountains. They weren’t bothered about muddy boots but we took off at door anyway. Toilets immaculate. Chef’s playlist that could be heard in the dining area - not a bad song on it for about an hour. Good on him!!

We stopped here to break up a long journey. Straight away it seemed very unwelcoming. My son is autistic, and because he seemed more comfortable in the corner section we asked to move tables. We were advised that was the dog friendly section, and obviously we would move if needed, it was quiet at the time, but this seem like an inconvenience to move tables. Then when my son was wandering in the pub, this seemed to annoy a couple of guests, and I know he seemed hyperactive but these are some of his autistic traits, this seemed to annoy one couple in particular, where the man was making very rude comments ( I know you have no control over who comes into your pub) but overall it just felt very unwelcoming in there. Are kids not allowed in here? It didn't seem like it. We come past this pub often, so we will not be stopping here again.

We had booked the Horseshoe Inn for our company Christmas Dinner and when we arrived we were kindly shown to our table, which looked neat, clean and tidy as one would expect from a professional catering operation. We were all in a positive frame of mind and were comfortable enough enjoying each others’ company. Sadly, I have nothing good to say about the food from the Christmas menu, an opinion that was shared by a fair number of my colleagues. MAINS: The meat dishes featured generously sized slabs of overcooked, tough meat smothered in bland packet-style gravy to disguise the crimes committed in the course of its preparation. Also the salmon was very dry and the sauce appeared to be a left-over prawn cocktail from the starter menu that was tipped over the top - a bizarre combination of flavours and unfortunate for the customer who already had the prawn cocktail as a starter! The vegetarian Wellington suffered from a pastry that was rather soggy and the filling was all in all a hard to define characterless mush. The vegetables were unimaginatively boiled in water and distinctly lacking in taste. PUDDINGS: The puddings appeared to have been bought in cheaply and were not even reaching the quality of a supermarket dessert. I restrain myself here and will only comment on the sticky toffee pudding. Cooking time was an issue yet again, a stodgy sugary mass instead of a melt-in-the-mouth experience. We did not say anything, as it did not seem to make sense and would have felt unkind to complain about a cook who was obviously not very practiced in catering for groups, let alone understood how to prepare a tasty meal in the first place. I would suggest hiring a different chef and focussing on creating a small but tasty menu! On a positive note: We enjoyed each others’ company and had a nice evening in a comfortable setting. The front of house staff were friendly!
