The Downe Arms in Bradford

We stayed at the hotel for the night so we thought it was easier to eat in the restaurant before we went out as we had an event on at Dalby Forest. When we checked into the hotel we were asked to let them know if we would be having dinner in the restaurant, we said we would be but wasn't sure what time, that was all fine but they said it might be busy. We went down to the restaurant around 6pm and it was dead. There were quite a few in the sports bar but the restaurant itself was empty. There were 2 waiting staff on who both spent most of the time looking at their phones. The menu online was entirely different to what was given to us in the restaurant. The online menu made the food sound a la carte but it was pretty basic, usual pub grub menu- steak, burgers etc. I ordered a medium rare steak and my partner had a burger. My steak was OK and it was probably medium rare but it was quite tough and bland and nothing to be excited about. I cannot remember the exact amount of the total bill but we did think at the time that it was a bit over priced for what it was. Wouldn't recommend unless that's your only option to eat out. Not impressed.

Wedding day stay... So no red carpet... very sombre entry for a beautiful bride. .. Food was sensational... Bar staff poor... if your hosting a morning wedding at least have refreshments available. .... Very clear the alcohol is not what you're paying for .... weak at best ... On returning for the evening reception the same dirty table cloths and a DJ that was risen from the local graveyard. Grumpy staff... amazing chef

Disappointed! We booked a table for 2 at 7pm after checking the menu online. Unfortunately the online menu was not what we were offered. Some dishes were the same but it was a much reduced offering. Our drinks order was taken but then I had to go to the bar to see where to order as no one came back to us. A waitress was then sent over and we ordered the burger for my husband and the steak pie for myself. The burger was excellent quality from a local butcher. The pie however was not so great, there was plenty of filling but the crust could not be cut through, it needed a hammer and chisel! This was reflected in the bill when I told the waitress. It seems that if you eat here when there is a function on then you are not a priority. For the amount of diners in the bar and restaurant the service should have been prompt and attentive but it was not. Sorry but we won’t be returning.

Came for dinner on an evening walked in the young lady very pleasant the other chap very miserable gave us menus and didn’t even speak. The garlic mushrooms on brioche I have to say were beautiful but the prawn cocktails majorly disappointed, the prawns had very clearly just been took out the freezer and ran under hot water to thaw out so they hadn’t been thawed out properly hardly any sauce. The mains, the burger was nice as was the scampi and hunters chicken however the steak was ordered medium well and came medium rare was asked to be cooked more that didn’t seem an issue however when it came back it was very clear it had been deep fried in a deep fat fryer it was extremely greasy stank of a fryer and very chewy. Desserts unfortunately out of 4 desserts non were great sticky toffee pudding over baked and over heated in the microwave making it hard in places and didn’t come with the ice cream it said on the menu the Eaton mess isn’t really an eaten mess and the frangipane was served cold fresh out the fridge not warm. Won’t be rushing back even though some of it was nice it’s not worth a revisit.

We stayed for the night to break up a long journey. We had a very pleasant stay, the family room was plenty big enough for the 4 of us. I noted some of the reviews and have to disagree, the decor is dated but its cared for and importantly very clean. we had a drink in the bar, the service was great and the staff made sure our youngest was kept happy. the breakfast was gorgeous, plenty of options available as well. Again the staff on duty were friendly and helpful. we'd stay again.

Fantastic. Five friends met up for a festive evening meal, many choices including a good choice of vegetarian. Food was plentiful and very tasty and we had several different options between us. Great value for a three course plus coffees. Lovely, friendly service. Definitely recommend.

Had our works Xmas function here. Very warm welcome. Superb food and great entertainment. Took advantage of discount room rate to stay overnight and a brilliant and proper Yorkshire breakfast!! Will definitely visit and stay again

Called in for a meal after a day out at Flamingo Land. Excellent home made food and generous portions. 10/10 service from everyone there. We benefited from the early bird offer as we ate before 6pm. The chicken parmo is huge! I couldn’t finish it which is a first for me!

We visited the Downe Arms with our 3 children and our dog. The food was plentiful and would highly recommend the Parmo Chicken. Desserts were demolished by the children. Games available to play and dog treats too.

Great afternoon tea. Excellent service. We will be back. Pleasant surroundings. Easy parking. Nearby raptor viewpoint and Forge Valley walk.

Cant understand the negative reviews. Called in for a spot of lunch, barman pleasant and attentive, we had our meal sat in the bar side rather than the restaurant and couldnt fault our meals, gammon for me and chickpea and spinich curry for my son. Both our deserts were from the vegan menu, bakewell tart and a sticky toffee pudding, both were lush. Based on our experiance today we would of course return, and yes we would highly recommend.

Seen the last few reviews and was a bit apprehensive but we couldn’t ask for more the staff went above and beyond the rooms were lovely and clean the food is excellent value for money we often go out to eat when we book anywhere as it’s often expensive but the food and staff were fantastic the food great deals early bird offers and grill night and also given a complementary bottle of Prosecco as we mentioned it was our anniversary we would definitely come back if we come this way again for a break

Just been here for the 1st time and had the Sunday carvery. Feel it was a really mixed experience. On arrival it wasn’t obvious where to go to tell someone we’d arrived. We rang the bell on reception (which it told us to do) and a man arrived and told us to ‘just go through to restaurant’. Which we did but then wasn’t sure what to do. Eventually someone came and showed us to a table and said someone will be over to see to you. We waited ages before someone came and asked what drinks we’d like and what food too. We ordered prawn cocktails which were very disappointing. No Marie Rose sauce (which was mentioned on the menu) just a squirt of mayonnaise. Lots of lettuce and a handful of small prawns. Then we waited and waited for the table to be cleared and was told the carvery would be a few minutes. And boy was it worth waiting for. The beef and pork were to die for! Gorgeous and large Yorkshire pudding. Loads of fresh and varied veg including red cabbage, leeks in a creamy sauce and delicious parsnips. Faultless. The chef was a little miserable and looked stressed. We couldn’t fit in a dessert. Reasonably priced. The menu gives the price for each course and then a price for 3 courses which was exactly the same as the courses added together. So no ‘deal’ if you fancied all 3. So a real mixed bag. Excellent food. Not great service.

From the outside this place does look appealing. Unfortunately the interior is very tired, the tables and chairs are way past their best. The menu is fairly standard pub food, not good, not bad. The four stars in the name on the signage and on the website are misleading. If this place had a star rating it would probably be max two. I cannot recommend and will not be back.

Went here for a quick drink with family. On arrival male behind the bar was rude, and ignorant. Not welcoming at all.

Barman was absolutely ignorant, arrogant and uninterested with us, we asked about the local bus service and his response was that he drives a car. Trying not to swear here but if I owned this establishment I'd remove him asap. Lucky he didn't get dragged outside for a hospitality lesson!

Was served by a man in his 50s who was abrupt and rude . Customer service was nil . Young girl was rolling her eyes at customers.. absolute rubbish.

We had afternoon tea which was a gift experience we had been given. There were sandwiches, hot sausage roll, pork pie, various cakes and a warm scone with cream and jam. All freshly prepared and scrumptious. The host was very welcoming and said at the outset we could take our time over it and if we couldn't manage it all he would box up any left-overs for us. This made us feel nice and relaxed and we really enjoyed our afternoon tea. Very nice hotel restaurant, lovely clean tables and well spaced out. Nice view of the hills too.

We decided to have our evening meal at the hotel and following Covid rules we filled out our menu and contact details.Unfortunately our starter was missed and our main courses arrived. Our waiter was fantastic and the issue was instantly resolved.The starters were delicious and when we were ready freshly cooked main courses were brought out and again they tasted absolutely devine.The staff were brilliant coping with the Covid restrictions and they all a brilliant crew and a real credit to the hotel and restaurant.This is definitely a restaurant to visit and one to enjoy.

Booked for Sunday lunch.This is one of our favourite places to dine.We had the roast Dinner and I must say the quality of the food is exceptional. The beef was perfect and the Yorkshire puddings enormous. Good selection of freshly cooked vegetables. I think £18 for three courses is superb value for money. Good choice of beers and the Black Sheep is well looked after.We shared the Strawberry Cheese cake for afters which was beautiful. We’ve eaten here on numerous times for many different occasions. And got Married here. I cannot recommend the Downe Arms enough. Phil and his team never disappoint. And we will be back again.

We met Friends and family for lunch on Friday. The menu has something for everyone. Very reasonable prices for lunchtime. Extremely large fish with very tasty homemade chips. Sauvignon blanc one of the nicest I have tasted.My Mum enjoyed her roast dinner, but would have preferred veg on a dish as a lot on plate to monouvre. Not really a bad thing. we had tickets for New Year's Eve at the Downe Arms. Excellent very friendly but oh dear the seating arrangements failed to live up to expectations.The tickets said 7:45 for 8pm. When we arrived we could only get a seat in the bar, not a problem in the end as the people in there were very friendly. It ws very dissapointing to find the function room full and had been so since 7pm according to people we spoke to. At one point there were people at at tables saving seats fro friends when the rest of us were stood around looking for somewhere to sit.I would suggest if this is the case most years then a seating allocation should be provided.

Staying in the caravan at St Helens so this pub was on the doorstep. Called in a few times just for a drink. Ate there on the Sunday evening, couldn't fault the food.Even got tickets for New Years Eve do which was excellent. Good food and drink and a bacon buttie for going home. Made very welcome. We found this while driving from the forest back to West Ayton and I can only say wow!! We had had a dog with us, so of course we checked first that dogs were welcome, which they are in the bar area, Food was lovely, very well prepared, service was not too overpowering, by that I mean we never felt that we were on a conveyor belt, price was reasonable. We were that impressed that we returned for the Sunday Carvery which we would also highly recommend.I really do not know how people can say that the food was horrendous and the staff were rude, we found this to be as welcoming as any in the area. And the fact that we returned and will return again when we are up next year should say every that any needs to know.

We went to the restaurant for a lovely meal as a couple. Got to the restaurant, shown to our table by the staff, then ordered some drinks; we had to wait a considerable amount of time before receiving them. Looking through the menu the food sounded pleasant, however my partner who is gluten free asked for the free from menu. Was disgusted to see that all the gluten free options were all vegan and vegetarian. The assumption that people choose to be gluten free, not because they have to is outrageous. It is clear that the Downe Arms is in large farming area of the UK and had made no effort to support local businesses, especially in a time when farmers need it most. I ordered a Sirloin steak, horrendously overpriced for what it was worth. It tasted like it had just come out the freezer and had the temperature to match. Could not wait to leave, however this seemed to be more challenging than we first thought. After receiving the bill, no one was attentive, the staff were untrained and simply rude. After eventually paying, they didn’t even have the manners to ask us if we enjoyed are meal. Simply the worst restaurant I’ve stepped foot in, even Wetherspoons would have been of a higher quality.

The free from menu was very poor, with all of the food that was gluten free also being vegan; not ideal as farmers who want to support British meat businesses. After asking to adapt a meat choice from the main menu, I wish I hadn’t bothered. The chicken was dry, tough and could’ve knocked someone out if you’d thrown it at them! The chips were not much better either, the oil they’d been cooked in cannot have been fresh due to the colour of the chips and the poor flavour. The only good area of the meal was the gin and I wish I’d had copious amounts more of alcohol to forget about the dreadful ‘experience’.I would not recommend the Downe Arms to anyone!

Called for lunch midweek, after visiting a a business in the village. We entered the building by the front door and were shown to the bar in the rear of the building. A young lady took our order and we both had the light bite. The portions were generous!All the staff were pleasant, polite and helpful. The bar menu catered for most peoples needs including GF, and was reasonably priced.The young lady running the bar was pleasant and attentive.A good find! Will call again when next passing.

We called in for a drink over the weekend. We were in the back bar with some friends. Our son has additional needs, no communication and likes to explore new places himself as he has no way of asking questions. We tried to keep him as calm and still as we could (he’s only 6!!), the looks and reactions from staff and the chap we assume was the manager were absolutely appalling!! Glaring at us and slamming doors to keep us separated from other people. No patience at all, they could see we were trying our best and weren’t actually bothering anyone to be fair. NEVER BEEN MADE TO FEEL SO UNWELCOME ANYWHERE!!!!!!

Eat in the restaurant and not the bar as dogs allowed in. Tables spaced well apart so not on top of each other. Furnishings excellent.We too had the steak night offer but did not rate the triple cooked chips - most were burnt and unediable but still a good offer with the good quality wine thrown in. As we were staying overnight for two nights had full Yorkshifre breakfast which was excellent and everything cooked to perfection and kept replemishing food off the buffet table. Something to suit all tastes. Did not eat there the second night.

Will not be returning anytime soon Used to like going but I now take my trade to another local pub and get treated better

We were staying at the Downe Arms Hotel for three nights, see separate review. We ate in the restaurant the first night and we were very impressed. Tuesday night is grill night and was excellent value. The restaurant is clean and smart and the waiting staff are very friendly. The meals were well cooked and the triple cooked chips were so delicious we had to eat them all. The food was well presented and because we ordered two course each we had a free bottle of wine. We expected an inferior house wine but as we asked for rose were offered Zinfandel was was lovely. The food was plentiful, I couldn’t finish my dessert.

Just had a lovely big plate of Triple fried Chips with crispy Haddock! Great service and very attentive to the table, making sure you have drinks etc

Stopped here after a day on the NYMR. Food great, portion size huge, Onion Rings to die for, great value. If I didn’t live so far away I’d be back in the very near future.

We had a great time at the Downe Arms bar! The drinks and location were great and the lovely young ladies (called Isabel and Alice) were very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be returning.

We stayed at the Downe Arms for four nights in a superior room.It was very clean and the bed so comfortable . Breakfast was help yourself to tea ,toast, Cereal ect.but waitress service for full English.Dinner menu had a good choice and the meals were well presented and very tasty.All in the medium price range.This hotel is in a very small village,but there are some lovely places to visit Whitby . castle Howard,and the bus to Scarborough stops right outside and takes 30 minutes.A Lovely stay with friendly staff.

My husband & I spent a lovely couple of nights at the hotel. We were greeted by a very friendly gentlemen on our arrival. Our room was spotlessly clean, with soft white bedding & towels. The shower in the bathroom didn’t have much pressure, but maybe that’s due to the one at home being very powerful. We took up the offer of breakfast both mornings, which was very nice, a great selection of hot & cold foods. We ate in the restaurant both nights too after spending our days out & about exploring. The food was excellent.

You just do not get any sleep. The church bell rings every hour on the hour 24 hours a day.

This place is amazing and the hospitality shown by the staff was exemplary. This was supposed to be a 2 night getaway for me and the better half. However, my Mum passed away suddenly in February this year and this gift was the last present she got me for my 40th. So we decided to make it a family trip instead, but was a little worried that the hotel wouldn’t allow it. However, they were brilliant and fully understood. Our room was fantastic, and the bath was out of this world. We will definitely be coming back to this lovely hotel and by the way the doorstop sarnies are just that! Absolutely delicious. I had lamb for evening meal was tasty and fell off the bone could not fault portion on the large size, the shepherds pie was piping hot with good selection of seasonal veg . Accommodation was clean and quirky what you would expect for a building so old character but with the niceties

Staying at a nearby campsite this pub was in walking distance so ideal location for us. We had 2 visits and both left us feeling very underwhelmed. The first visit we was served by a female member of staff who visibly and audibly tutted as we caused her to do her job instead of having a personal chat with another staff member. Our second visit we sat in the beer garden which was nothing more than a portion of carpark fenced off. 3 couples ordered 3 meals together but on separate bills. There was a gap of almost 40 mins between the first and last meals. The owner came to speak to us and although tried to help, in fact just sought to justify the problem by initially blaming us for sitting outside as "they dont normally serve food in the beer garden" well you took the order.....He them bjamed "Tom" for not putting the order to the kitchens stating he would be disciplined. We were compensated with 2 free drinks.( For 6 of us)In the interest of fairness, we may have had a couple of bad visits. We know others who have been here and had a really nice time. The pub looks very welcoming,(not the garden) and the food was very tasty and reasonably priced. Perhaps a couple of days training in customer satisfaction would get this pub up to scratch.

We had two adult mains and puddings and our daughter had something from the children’s menu. Everything was delicious, and the staff were friendly and helpful, we would definitely recommend it.

Food very good staff friendly and helpful, didn't have breakfast but evening meals very good, we didn't book but were given table in restaurant straight away, you could eat in bar but was very busy with families and dogs and was fairly noisy so we prefer the restaurant

Didn't eat anything that was not great quality and totally delicious. Good selection without being too much, but all tastes catered for.

We held our wedding and reception here on the 22nd of June. It’s been a long18month wait from our first meeting with Phil and his team.
