26June2024 This ‘bad’ review is just to get the owners attention to the fact the phone number doesn’t work. My last visit was June 2023 and it was the same dead-phone at that time, but I chose to drive there and had a great meal and i cannot recall whether I said anything about the dead-phone at the time, but this time, with so many places closing, I’m not sure whether this one is still open. Happy to delete this review if I hear the phone is fixed.

I cannot say how dreadfully disappointed with The Dove i am. I called about 5 months ago and booked a table for 8 for lunch. I explained that we were meeting friends over from Australia and The Dove was approx half way gor those coming from Devon, from Surrey and from Berkshire. The landlady said she would make a note that we would be arriving about 11am for a cuppa and a catch up before seating us for lunch at one. I asked if she wanted a deposit and was told no. She took my name and number and made the booking. About a fortnight ago i rang to make sure all was still ok but got no answer..... i must have made 30+ phone calls and left voice messages, messages on their social media, on their website. I did NOT get one call back!!! I can only assume she gave my table away and didnt have the guts to tell me, calling the landlady a gutless b**** is not even close to what i want to call her. What a crap way to run a business! The stress of trying to find somewhere else was unbelievable.Luckily i found The Royal Oak who did seat us with amazing service and food.

I haven't stayed at the Dove Inn, I have just been there for lunch. The food was delicious. Now they have stopped doing food. This is very, very sad, as there is nowhere in a 20 mile radius, (at least) that could better it. How rotten for the staff, losing their jobs just before Christmas. How very unkind of the owners. Hotels are ten a penny, good food and lovely staff aren't! Annette Gane Kingston Deverill.

Excellent country pub. Visited in January where nothing really looks it's best, but this is a lovely setting. I was slightly worried by not many vegetarian options on the menu but in reality can you ask for a veg version of any dish. Really worth a visit.

A quite severe grading due to a series of disappointments that started the moment we arrived at The Dove after a stressful and very long drive from The Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. We arrived mid to late afternoon on a Friday and were greeted by Lee; very helpful and cheery. All looking great so far, but things started going downhill from that point. He showed us to our accommodation, which was a nice sized room with king sized bed, two conservatory/ garden chairs, chest of drawers, built in cupboard and a tv. Not in the main building. It was one of six or seven rooms in a converted outbuilding and the furthest from the main building down a slippy paved pathway with no security/safety lighting. This gave the impression that the place was busy, which is why we had been allocated this particular room. This turned out not to be the case, but in fact we appeared to be the only guests. After unloading the car we asked to book a table for the restaurant that evening but were told that the kitchen was closed for refurbishment so, no hot food available at all. This included breakfast, continental option only. Oh! dear. We got settled and decided to watch a bit of television before heading off to find somewhere to eat but couldn't operate the tv remote. An overcomplicated Sky system that Lee had to come and show us how to operate. We returned about 8.45 pm only to find the bar closed. A quiet night it was to be then. I made a nightime hot drink and found old water in the kettle, and a carton of UHT milk had obviously broken in the container quite some time ago as the stench of bad milk / cheese was overpowering. I went over to breakfast the following morning and returned the offensive milk container and also to see what was on offer and it was truly disappointing, I just opted for coffee. Another disappointment as all that was served was cheap instant coffee. Not to be expected in this day and age I'm afraid. The rest is money saving ideas taken too far, single ply loo roll, cheap renovations/ upgrading and no or very overworked cleaning staff. Sorry to the staff at The Dove but you have been given a very poor deal as you are the ones who have to try to sell a very damaged product.

Had booked a two night stay in the two bedroomed suite to explore Longleat, Stonehenge & the general area. The booking process was tortuous to say the least ... the manager siting IT problems. I eventually booked directly with him over the phone & had to make contact again to ask for email confirmation of the transaction. None came. I emailed & asked for written confirmation & it arrived but was incorrect. There was no mention of the amount I had already paid to secure the booking. I asked for an amendment but again heard nothing. Alarm bells should have been ringing by this stage I know! On arrival we were met by a very pleasant member of staff who informed us that there would be no hot food available for dinner or breakfast & the place was on the verge of closing down. I felt like leaving immediately but it was getting late & we were all tired. The two bed suite was clean but the furniture was broken & sofa cushions grubby. I should imagine if it was maintained properly it would have been lovely. The Manager that took our booking was absent, leaving two lovely ladies to deal with the disgruntled guests. In the end we only stayed for one night as what was advertised was not on offer. We felt angry that the manager Lee had not contacted us to explain the situation as we would have cancelled our booking. If you are booked in here you need to find other accommodation. Dreadful, non existent customer service from Management.

We popped in when passing through after reading good reviews. There was not enough staff on to manage and while the food we had was nice, there were several errors with our meals. Unfortunately we had to leave quickly as we were due to meet family and so didn't notice that we had been overcharged until we later that night. Management were very slow to follow up when I contacted them and overall I was disappointed with our experience. I will not be visiting again.

This pub is under new management so we thought we’d give it a try having not been there in a while, well I wish we didn’t bother. On arrival we noticed that two of the ales weren’t on, limiting our choices to one, and after we were showed to our table we were told that half of the things on the menu weren’t available. We skipped the starters, two of us ordered fish cakes, one chicken and bacon dish and one Goan fish curry. The fish cakes although small were acceptable, the curry was nothing to write home about, basically prawns and rice, very dry. The chicken dish was very disappointing, large chunks of chicken, under cooked strips of bacon in a grey sauce. It was advertised with sautéed potatoes which weren’t there, when we told the waitress they were missing we were told they would be out shortly, they never arrived! This is a lovely pub in a lovely village however it is very expensive and not worth the money. The only good thing about the evening was the white wine and the beer. The chicken dish was knocked off the bill which was good of them, however we will not be returning.

I stayed here last night and ate in the restaurant. I last visited 4 years ago, it was great and busy so I was surprised last night the place was empty but now I know why. The staff are lovely however they are seriously let down by the over priced poor quality menu. My food was cold and had to be returned to the kitchen which was surprising as only one other table in. It tasted average at best. The breakfast was even worst!! No menu to look at, just told it’s full English… oh but no sausage or egg and salmon. I order a bacon sandwich which was the worst I’ve ever eaten. Bacon was watery and pale as if boiled. Certainly not fried or grilled. Be warned if staying the bar will close early. After a 4 hr drive to get there I needed to do some work. The bar all closed up at 9.30 and doors locked. Rooms are ok, clean. But they have the smallest TV I’ve ever seen in a hotel room and no plug socket next to the mirror. Impossible to use hair styling appliances whilst at the mirror. The outside area needs a clean, I sat at a table outside to start, the floor was full of cigarette ends. With 2 bar staff and no customers someone could have done a sweep

Now I understand why. I ordered the club sandwich. For £15 it was expensive at best. Thinly sliced white bread, one piece of bacon, and a few little slices of chicken and a little salad. Shockingly bed, not even presented well. A real rip off, do my advice would be stay clear, unless they change their chef!

Dreadful. It appears that there has been yet another change of chef and staff. At half the price it would still have been very poor value for money. If a pub has only six (which reduced down very quickly) things on the menu they should be able to get them right, the online menu is not available don't be fooled by it. High prices for small portions of poorly prepared food, if they are not using the cheapest available ingredients then the chef is doing his best to make them taste that way. Looking around at all the food left on other tables we were not the only ones to feel the food was poor. Not suitable for anyone at all hard of hearing as it is like sitting in a glazed echo chamber so you can't spend the waits for service talking.

This Inn was recommended to us by friends that dinned there a couple of weeks ago and they kept going on about the quality of the food so we decided to give it a try. We booked for Saturday night. What a lovely experience. The place was buzzing, I think all the tables were full and there's no surprise there. The food was outstanding! We had two seafood grillade, sirloin steak and fish board. Our table was over the moon with the fish that was beautifully cooked. I mean top level! I also saw a steak tartare going to a different table and that remind me of the 80´s at top hotels in London. What a delightful dish. All in all, 10 stars. Amazing food and great service in beautiful surroundings.

I have visited The Dove on a number of occasions since my review in 2015 and have continued to be impressed by the quality and standard of the food. However, on the last two visits some of the choices made for our meal were not up to the usual standard expected here. On one occasion the chips with my meal were overcooked and were more like greasy chips, and on my last visit the fish pie chosen by one of my guests was more like a soup than a pie. The staff offered to replace it, but the next one was exactly the same and my guest did not enjoy it at all.The chef maintained that this was his usual recipe. Frankly that was very disappointing. To be fair the staff were very helpful and my guest was offered a free desert to compensate and no charge was made for the fish pie. The starters and deserts were very good, but as this was a special occasion I was disappointed. The Dove remains a very nice venue, but after our recent visits, I am unable to give it an excellent rating.

We ordered some drinks & they were bought to our table with a smile from a lovely young lady that obviously enjoys her job. We had soup, a caesar salad & some fries. All were superb, the curried parsnip soup was really tasty, the fries were crispy & double or triple fried & my husbands salad was fresh and tasty. We then decided to have a pudding each as it was my husbands birthday, these both were also good. If I could just suggest one thing, maybe some quiet music in the background would be good. I would definitely go back when next in the area & this pub also has rooms too.

Car park was virtually full and most tables taken when we arrived for a late Sunday lunch. We were shown to a table at the end of the porch style conservatory. It was cool there as away from the main areas. Service was pretty quick given the amount of diners. The roast lamb was rosemary laced and fairly flavoursome and a generous portion. However the roast potato and veg portions were fairly sparse and nothing special. Creme brulee with ice cream appeared to be an intriguing desert, but although it had a good hard caramalised sugar top, the brulee was sloppy with little flavour and the ice cream did nothing to enhance the dish.it's a great pub for eating, but maybe a victim of its own success now! Certainly at the prices charged the food quality needs to be better.

They served Sunday lunches but also had other options like fish pie, burgers and steak. Quite a gourmet menu, unusual for the country setting.I had whitebait as a starter which was lovely, and a chicken burger for a main which was served with Chorizo and a chilli jam. My friends had roast lamb and roast beef, both of which were served with all the trimmings and I was assured they were lovely as well. This was reasonably pricey overall (£66 for three two-course meals and drinks), but I would say worth it for the quality of the food served.

Arriving Sunday afternoon to stay I was met with a warm welcome and asked if I would like to have dinner, I agreed for 7pm. At the bar I ordered a pint of Otter Bitter and was presented with a varied menu. What surprised me was the desserts - usually I avoid 'sweets' - but here they do serve some excellent sharp desserts. So I elected to go for a Main and Dessert, 8 oz Devon Red Ruby rib eye steak medium rare served with a large field mushroom, tomato and 'gourmet chips'. The steak was spot on and very tender, the chips crisp, fluffy and hot. I had declined any sauce as I had wanted to taste the steak on its own and was delighted with what I got, just managing to clear my plate. Having finished my main course and beer I was asked if I wanted anything to drink and/or dessert. At this point the Sticky Toffee was unavailable - it is very popular but not my taste, far too sweet - but I ordered Lemon Roulade with Raspberries and Raspberry Sorbet . The sweetness of the meringue was offset well by the lemon curd and the Raspberry enhanced by the sour note of the blueberry(?) coulis. A real tangy dessert for a change.

Four out of six of our lunch party were vegetarians. More vegetarian choices please, and we would return.

Decided to come home based on the trip advisor reviews. We were not disappointed by the food selection especially the fish. Good service too!

Unfortunately our visit to the Dove Inn today was a bit of a let down, to start off they do not have a childrens menu which resulted in paying £7 for a plate of pasta with cheese for my 3 year old. Then my husband and myself ordered meals with chips and when they arrived they were very greasy and not nice. The pub itself is lovely but not very child friendly, so not for us.

The Dove takes some finding but it is well worth the journey. The meal was first rate. Between us, we selected dishes from a wide range and all more than lived up to expectation. The service was first rate. The Dove itself, the village and the drive are all very pleasant and make this a great venue for a visit from nearby or further afield.

Visited here end March 2016 meeting up with some friends. We had booked; warm welcome, fire burning with lovely smell of logs, great waitresses who couldn't have been more helpful. Good menu and absolutely delicious food. 4 had the steak and kidney pie which was apparently wonderful; one excellent calves' liver and I had swordfish which was replacing the halibut. Shared scallops starter also delicious. Puds also great and generally a lovely place to meet up and enjoy some time with some wonderful friends.

Met some friends halfway at The Dove Inn for lunch yesterday and were welcomed by a friendly lady and man (not sure if they were husband and wife) and were made to feel so welcome. We hadn't booked but were worried we weren't going to get a table as the weather was gorgeous. We were sat on a lovely round table in the conservatory where we could admire what we imagined to be a fairly newly refurbished accommodation. The waitress and waiter were so lovely and nothing we asked was to much trouble, we were looked after superbly. The food was fantastic, the menu was one of the best I've seen for a long time and again the service was great. We will definitely be using this more often, even if we have to travel.

Me and my fiancé stayed here for just a night after spending the day at longleat - as soon as we arrived we were greeted with friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. The fire was burning and it just felt really homely. We stayed in room 5 and were highly impressed with the modern layout, and the bathroom was so so nice. Really wished we had this bathroom back home. We had an evening meal in the pub and couldn't fault the food at all. The lamb shank was the best we've ever had and just melted in your mouth. Was a really nice little inn to stay at, and would recommend this place to any couple who love being in the country in little hidden away places. It was perfect.

The Dove was a fabulous dining experience. We found the atmosphere really good. The décor & layout was lovely. Service was efficient & friendly. We enjoyed the food which was very appetising & was well served. I can recommend the Burger which was excellent. The price was well worth it & I will be back. The Bar is dog friendly which is a great advantage.

Having had 2 very poor meals at the Dove (being relatively local to us), we decided to try one last time for a lunch time meal with the children. We were sitting between the gents and the kitchen (no complaint there although there were other same sized tables obviously available, dining with children we do understand being tucked away). We decided on the burger and were disappointed to be served a processed "patty"... rather than a home made burger. It was, not surprisingly, pretty disappointing (albeit totally acceptable if served up at the fair or at a burger van!), and all of us left it pretty much uneaten. Although this was mentioned to the waitress (who was very nice!!!), we paid full whack and decided not to come again. Such a shame as it is a lovely pub with great staff. Sort out the food and the seating plan and we may be persuaded to try again.

Had friends visiting from Portsmouth and booked three weeks in advance. Asked three times not to be seated in the conservatory as rather cramped as we found out last year when we came with our same friends. We were assured that we would have table five near the bar. On arrival we were shown to the conservatory and when I said we asked not to be seated in here, the waitress replied that there was such a big table near the bar that we had to be squeezed in here although this table usually sits in the bar area. Was not happy. The food was poorly presented and each course came with some dead herb. Eventually my friend pointed this out and the waitress laughed and said "Oh dear". The table wobbled all night despite putting every beer mat we could find under it. All in all it was a very uncomfortable, unpleasant evening and a great disappointment as this was our Christmas get together. Would not recommend this place. No atmosphere and poor service. Very average food. Disgruntled customers from Warminster. Won't be visiting again.

Saw the signs for the pub off the main road, it was a little ways away but very happy we found it. Service was good and have no complaints. Food was good although the duck was a little too pink for my tastes. Generally good experience and will visit when next in the area.

Stopped here whilst travelling the A303 and finding several other pubs full or not serving. The atmosphere was cosy, the service friendly and the food delicious and well priced. All in all exactly what you hope for from a country pub.

Having had previous good experiences, a table for ten was booked well in advance. There is only one oval table and we were not allocated it. We were not warned about this in advance or given any choices, and so, on arrival, we found we were in the public bar area on a miserable L-shaped arrangement so people had their backs to each other. The noise in this area was unbelievable due to exceptionally loud 'regulars' - so avoid Friday nights (or any other night!) when these ignorant, inebriated, inconsiderate lot are there. Frankly, though the food at The Dove is good, this whole experience was horrible. We asked nicely to be moved. I was told this was a pub, so nothing could be done, and what did we expect? A couple of observations: if it is just a pub, then perhaps it should reconsider its substantial restaurant prices. Also, there is a nice quiet sun lounge area to which we could have been moved but we were told the owner did not allow this. The quiet convivial get-together (where we could actually enjoy conversations) that we had all so looked forward to was effectively wrecked. We are also local to the area, but won't be going back after this totally indigestible experience. To be entirely fair, we were given free coffees and a bottle of wine as a decent gesture, but this special occasion is now sadly memorable for entirely the wrong reasons.

Overall, maybe I'm being mean & should have awarded a four star. Why didn't I? Simply because too many other similar places that I stay have upped their game whereas here it is still pretty much the same old story. The bar area is well served by Tom, but the overall ambiance away from the bar is just OK. The food was good, but nothing special. A couple in our party of round about a dozen were quite unimpressed but, to be fair, others really enjoyed it. I was a bit on the fence as my lamb waspretty good, but I have had better. The room was nice enough, but there was a constant humming from pumps or fans close to it. Very early in the morning a bus (I assume) stopped outside the bedroom window & woke me up. The breakfast was very good although I found the coffee horrendously strong. For the price, it wasn't cheap. For thirty percent less I'd have gone to a four star review, but I can only get to a three right now. Maybe they need to sharpen up their treatment of customers & their needs? Other places have left me feeling far more positive, so something wasn't right!

Was really excited to visit The Dove although I had heard from others its hit or miss and unfortunately this was correct. My starter of camembert was good - you cant really go wrong with that!My main was a lamb shank, with honey roasted veg and mustard mash. My Vegetables were not honey roasted they were boiled and i couldn't taste any mustard in my mash. The lamb tasted like it had been boiled or poached, it was very tough and did not fall away from the bone nor could i get it away from all of the fat.Dessert was chocolate brownie which was more like a sponge cake, I didnt finish this. At no point did anyone come back to the table to check on our food.We did mention our concerns to the waitress. But it seemed to fall on deaf ears. As we are a young group I think people think we wouldnt know good food. But with experiences of eating in many top restaurants in Bath and beyond, we do know good food!We felt really uncomfortable leaving also as the owner (who looked as if he had one too many) was glancing over to us all evening and when we left with the most dodgy look! Not very professional I must say! We are cancelling our large Christmas booking.

I visited this pub/restaurant as a guest in a party of about 18 including 5 well behaved children. The building has been completely renovated in the last few years and it is very attractive and comfortable. Our starters were excellent. My roast beef was beautifully tender but both the meat and (plentiful) vegetables were luke warm and there were only two roast potatoes each. As a guest I didn`t feel I could ask for this to be put right. Puddings were excellent. The teas and coffees arrived at the rate of 2 every 10 minutes - I timed them and this is no exaggeration. When my tea finally arrived I had a cup but no saucer - apparently they had run out! They had also run out of desert spoons and one guest had to eat his pudding with a soup spoon. Such a shame as this pub has the reputation of being expensive but worth it.

Just to say we eat in the restaurant on the evenings of the 14th and 15th August and yes, the Owner was a bit tiddly on the 15th, but he talked to us in a perfectly civilised way and WE didn't hear him being either offensive, or bullying to anyone. And the service and food were very good. Just thought I'd set the record straight - I hate unfairness!

Popped out to the Dove at Corton for a meal with friends this weekend and as usual had a fabulous meal.Unfortunately however the owner had drunk far too much and was obviously very drunk and was verbally abusing his staff even to the point where he physically pushed a member of his staff all in front of customers within the restaurant. Members of our party were upset by his behaviour and we found ourselves trying to calm the situation by allowing members of staff to clear tables when we were not even finished as the owner had told staff to clear tables. We won't be eating here again as locals drinking in the bar said it's not the first time this manger has acted in this way after getting drunk and abusing staff.Shame really as the rest of the staff there are absolutely faultless.

Visited the Dove for a meal with friends. Couldn't believe the disgraceful behaviour of the man I understand to be the owner, who was heavily under the influence of alcohol. The waiting staff were lovely and so attentive, however he was downright rude to them, in fact his behaviour was nothing short of bullying, barking orders in the middle of the restaurant and actually physically shoving them around!!! His presence absolutely ruined our meal - most definitely won't be back!!!!

On a visit to friends in Warminster, we decided to eat out at The Dove Inn, first impressions of the building and car park were quite good, we were met by the owner/landlord as we entered the building. As it was my first visit to this area I wasn't at all impressed by his use of the "F" word twice in the first 30 seconds of our visit, had we not been with friends we would have made a hasty exit, but we were taken to a table and seated very promptly, our friends and hosts were equally shocked and embarrassed by his obnoxious manner and vulgar expressions, he also was argumentative, this was not very welcoming and I would have been happier not staying but I felt obliged to stay. On to the food, it was just about ok, it took about 45 minutes but as the place was pretty busy I guess this was acceptable, my husband and I had beer battered haddock, which wasn't that bad, however, Our friends had steak which was grossly undercooked and the fish pie which was full of bones, desserts were all fine they were a little expensive but they saved the evening from being a complete let down. Would I go back - no, would I recommend this establishment, perhaps if the Landlord changes his attitude from being an obnoxious prig.

This was my second visit - beautiful venue and excellent decor especially the ladies! Table was expertly laid and looked fab. Service was very good and speedy but the plates and food were luke warm at best and one fish pie wasn't fully cooked and went back. Request for mustard brought a half used yellow tube of Colmans!! We were shocked as would have expected better in such a lovely place. There didn't seem to be anyone in charge today. We had a great time despite disappointing fare - this was an annual family get together and we won't be rebooking re cold plates and mustard otherwise we may have.

On arrival we were very impressed, the pub seemed nicely busy and very quirky. We were greeted and shown to our booked table. Drinks were served quickly and our order taken (the menu was different from online but still had plenty of choice). The room was quite chilly and we quickly noticed quite a few customers had jumpers and coats on. My partner didn't remove his jacket. The food looked and tasted really good but unfortunately my dauphinoise potatoes were cold, I continued eating the other food on my plate and waited for the waiter to come to the table to check everything was ok, unfortunately no one came. I did then eat what I'd been served. It's such a shame the small details were overlooked as it could be really nice there. Sadly we won't be returning. My three tips for the venue would be, make sure the pub is comfortably warm, check the temperature of the food you are serving and always check that your customers are happy with the food served.
