Oh dear. What should be a lovely old characterful pub is clearly struggling under the current management. We arrived for a drink at 12.20 pm on a Sunday after a wet coastal walk, to find the door bolted but the lights on. The member of staff inside signalled that the pub wasn’t opened until the manager returned. This he did a few minutes later with a bag of logs and proceeded to light the fire and then left 5 minutes later, leaving his assistant in charge. The lad left behind sat on a bar stool yawning and was too young to serve a second pint. He was unsure whether or not food was being served for Sunday lunch. We were the only people inside, the bar area was dirty, the windows were dirty, the loos were filthy with overflowing bins; the whole place was sad and depressing. Let’s hope that new management with energy and enthusiasm can take over the pub and save this beautiful old pub from being closed permanently as it has so much potential, even in today’s tricky market.

The Dolphin is a lovely olde pub, full of character and lovely, friendly local people (thanks Guy & Vanessa for your extraordinary kindness). The food menu was very basic, but the fish & chips were good. The real ale was kept very well too. The reason for the 1* rating, which is being generous .... unfortunately we were staying the night, and the accommodation (in a separate building) was absolutely disgusting. The room was dirty, mould on walls of bathroom and bedroom, carpet filthy, nothing privided other than a kettle and bath towels, no cups/tea or coffee/milk or glasses provided, no room facilities information and no fire safety instructions! (To be fair the bed was quite comfortable and thankfully bed linen was clean). When politely asking for the basic, missing room items, the temporary manager said " its nothing to do with me, I'm just temporary"!!!! We had breakfast included, but declined, as we just wanted to get out ASAP. I am really angry, having paid £120 for a filthy room which resembled a derelict 1970s holiday camp chalet room. It's a disgrace this can be allowed, the accommodation should be condemned. STAY THERE AT YOUR PERIL!! The local people really support their village pub, however the pub management company/owners don't, and it is a classic example where the community should be given the opportunity to purchase the pub to lovingly restore it and bring the life and soul back into these fabulous old buildings, and make them great again.

Went with 3 friends for dinner. There was only one veggie "option," so we asked them to make us egg chips and peas. While waiting, the chef was whipping the landlady with a tea towel [for fun] which he was using in the kitchen !! To which she called him and f***ing t***t. The food arrived my egg didn't have any yolk, just the white. They did change it after I brought it to their attention, which arrived very greasy. My friend's steak was insipid and underdone. The onion rings were cremated. Then, to add insult to injury, we had to pay, which was really expensive. Awful, awful, awful.

Odd pub. Expensive, rubbish food. The phrase 'you get what you pay for' doesn't even ring true, as it was overpriced for some basic pub grub ingredients. Definitely won't go back

We live in the village next to Kingston and wanted to see what was happening, after some recent v mixed reviews, especially in June. So, there are new landlords who have only been in situe for 2 weeks. They have taken over from the landlords who were here in June and there has been a fast turnaround of landlords over the last year, by all accounts. We only stopped for a drink this time - the new landlords are trying to get the kitchen sorted out, so we will be back to test out the food in due course We hope the newcomers can make a good go of it. 4*’s for the v nice but once bitter

Arrived after a long coastal walk for dinner and to stay over. We had booked a few months ago as this is the only place to eat and stay in Kingston and the reviews looked reasonable. What a terrible mistake! This is by far the worst place we have ever stayed in and the food was laughably awful - inedible. The landlord and lady were shouting at each other across the almost empty pub. We were shown to a room so filthy it was clear it was as it had been left by the previous inhabitants. with nowhere else to go I had to clean the place myself, and although the landlady claimed to have changed the sheets we chose to sleep in our clothes. We had to raid the equally filthy next door rooms to find toilet roll. We chose not to risk having the breakfast we had paid for and left as soon as we could the following morning. The taxi driver who picked us up knows all about how terrible this place is, as did the sympathetic locals we met outside who are all boycotting the place. The landlords are moving on (they said because their XL bully dog had upset the brewery - but it was clear they were entirely out of their depth trying to run a pub like this). AVOID THIS PLACE until Champions Inn do the decent thing by the locals and hire some decent staff. The village deserves better.

Having recently changed management, the pub has a lovely warm and welcoming feel as soon as you walk through the door. It's back to the traditional pub we used to know and we love it. Greeted by the warmest hospitality, the food is awesome, honestly one of the best roasts we've had in years, if not, ever!! We look forward to coming back for more delicious food and warm service. Highly recommend! A word for anyone travelling from afar, it is a small village pub, with a small close knit team and therefore there will be times when it is unexpectedly closed or not serving food, so always call ahead just in case.

Absolutely lovely pub. Now under new, and much better management than it was this summer. Local couple Leon and Tash are always friendly, and will greet you with a smile, in their warm and cosy pub. The menus isn’t vast but the food is freshly prepared, good quality, well presented and very tasty. Enjoy a warm by the roaring fire in the winter or sit out in a lovely quiet beer garden in the heart of the pretty village in the summer.

Annoyingly, the sign for the pub, on the main road, clearly states “open all day every day”, but, when we actually got to the pub, there was a hand written scrap of paper on the door saying “closed Mondays”!!! I get that it was the 30th October, but, change your damned sign!

I understand this pub has just been taken over. Friendly staff and nice pub, but the food is very basic and disappointing. I think if they are to last, they really need to up their game. To say it was average cafe food…is kind. More akin to school dinners. Quality of ingredients and choice are both poor. I wish them luck and hope they can improve things or I fear they won’t last long.

I am writing this as hate being ripped off. Nice old unspoilt and friendly pub but terrible B&B!! We were in room 1 as we had our dog with us and this is 'The Dog Room'. It was DISGUSTING and we're not fussy. Needs major refurbishment, bedside lights didn't work, tiny room and very very scruffy. Worst thing however was the bed.... the mattress was stained in several places and not tea stains! The only thing between us and the mattress was a tired old sheet, no mattress protector. Breakfast was help yourself and eat it on a dirty tray on your lap in the bedroom or sit in the unkempt beer garden. Certainly not worth £115 per night!

Spent a week staying in Kingston in the cottage next door to the Dolphin. What a great, fun experience. Warren and Zoe who are running the pub and B&B are a lovely couple and made us feel so welcome in the pub every day. We had great food and always a warm welcome. They had time to chat and we felt like we had made new friends. We will definitely go back and hope to see them thriving. We were staying for a weeks holiday in the village, popped in for drink and to support the village pub. What an amazing reception, the landlady Zoe gave us an amazing warm welcome. Although food was only available Friday-Sunday it didn’t matter to us. We were staying over the coronation weekend and the whole village attended a garden party at the pub and we were again made to feel very welcome. If you are looking for a beautiful quaint welcoming pub, you’d go a long way to beat the Dolphin Inn

I read quite a few reviews on here and wondered if I was visiting the same pub. Extremely friendly including all the locals - we were grockles but never called such. Yes the menu is limited but that is a good thing, generally, as the food isn’t out of a Brakes packet and is both very good and plenty of it. It’s a shame that some folk seem to find it hard to walk to a blackboard and take a picture of the menu. Really nice village pub - if you are used to London theme pubs then, no, you probably won’t like it but we ate there twice and had drinks there several evenings.

On arriving at the dolphin inn we where shown to our room and what a shock ! The twin room was unclean with very dirty carpet and leak from radiator which produced a very dark wet stain resulting on having to wear shoes to walk around . Very inadequate hanging space for clothes ,no full length mirror and the small mirrors provided where inadequate as the lighting in the room was dreadful ,no bedside cabinets so could not relax in bed with a drink ,very loose headboards which resulted in terrible noise every time you moved ,shower room was very neglected ! Shower had not been cleaned ,cracks in tiles ,black mould on walls ,mirror over sink was loose ,toilet seat loose . On the good side the staff where very good and food was cooked lovely .but this pub really needs lots of money spent on updating the rooms to a decent standard as it was way to expensive for what it offered as far as cleanliness and comfort !

Best place to eat & we have eaten around Kingsbridge, Bantham & wider area and this has been the best find by far. 2 meals & two alcoholic beverages cost £30. Lovey pub the food was a letdown for the price I had the best meal of mussels and chips but I have had better. I found the sauce tasteless and the chips bad. When a pub has 80% of meals come with chips i would have thought they would strive to achieve good chips. The worst meal was the spicy chicken burger it wasn’t spicy and intensely dry with chips and salad garnish no dressing just dry leaves and two blueberries cut in half. The other meals were nothing special also. We all regret choosing this pub as we only had a short time in this area and there is a lot of other places we wished we had tried instead. It isn’t nice saying this and I do feel bad but the bar staff were very nice and hope they sort things out sorry for the negativity.

A group of us parked our cars at the pub car park before setting off on a short walk before lunch. One of the cars was parked in front of a pedestrian walkway to the pub but the driver had left enough room for people to get by. Moreover there were no notices asking people to keep the entrance clear. When we returned, there was a note on pub headed paper admonishing the driver and written in an incredibly rude tone ending with ‘IDIOT’. Needless to say we did not give them any custom and went instead to the nearby excellent Pickwick Inn at St Anne’s Chapel.

Had a loverly time at the inn today chatting with the staff and sampling the local water. A great place to get lost in time.

We came for lunch, it was ok but a bit on the pricey side. Staff friendly and food came reasonably quickly, we didnt feel rushed.

Surely not many pubs have a sign on the road saying "Please drive slowly through the pub"...

Really nice pub in a delightful village. They were having a bit of a nightmare when we visited as they had no gas to cook the usual menu. But they had improvised well and were managing to put out some hot meals. The weather was beautiful so we sat in the beer garden and opted for cold food. A delicious prawn sandwich and an extremely generous ham and cheese ploughman's lunch. Proper hand cut ham and local cheese.

After a bit of a wait we had great scallops, wraps and a chicken burger. Enjoyed a number of different ciders after a hot walk at the beach. Nice location and great to sit outside on a warm night .

Great stay! Wonderful old quant English pub set in a beautiful village in the heart of the Devon countryside. Very genial hosts, very accommodating. The room was above standard for cleanliness. Food delicious. For a quiet get away ideal.

We booked an evening meal table, mid school half term week. By 8pm they had run out of their pork belly special, which my wife would have chosen. Instead she had the Steak and Jail Ale Pie with buttered potatoes and seasonal vegetables. This was a large slice of pie with plenty of meat and pastry top and bottom. The potatoes, broccoli and mange tout were all good.

My wife and two kids came for supper here. I thought the menu was excellent. We all had fish and chips in the end which as good as I have in years. The staff were also really friendly and went out of their way to help. Would definitely recommend.

Great location, miles from anywhere with a beautiful beer garden full of flowers, birds and sunshine. Accommodation was good. Room although quite small was quaint with comfy beds and shower room en suite. Hairdrier, shampoo, body lotion and shower gel included!! Ate in the bar on the Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed our steak and jail ale pie. Breakfast was served in the restaurant with a good choice, ranging from full breakfast to egg benedict and fish. We loved it here and would stay again.

We have visited this pub twice in the last three weeks as Kingston is an excellent base for a superb round walk involving the estuary and coast path. The first time the food was excellent - mussels, a bit expensive but for the large size of portion perfectly acceptable. Our second visit was slightly disappointing as this is not the cheapest of pubs and one expects a little bit extra. The most disappointing was the tuna steak which we were under the impression came with a salad - what appeared was a hint of garnish - a few leaves - and as the chips were served in a separate pot a largish plate arrived with a tuna steak one end and the few leaves the other. Ditto the burger - more a garnish than a salad.

We went on Saturday with neighbours - 9 of us - as it has recently changed management - lovely scallops, good steak (although one was really good the other two perfectly acceptable and we would have been perfectly happy if the third one on the table hadn't been thicker and rarer!). Excellent moules frites and the puddings all disappeared although I didn't have room for one.

Booked a table for five for a weekday lunch. The pub was fairly busy and we finished up sat on a table near the bar, so a little tight for comfort. The menu was really not varied enough and very similar to when we visited a few months ago. Our group had, gammon, steak and ale pie and burger meals, whilst I had fish and chips. Everyone was satisfied with their meals but no more than that. The fish and chips was ok, though the mushy peas came in a solid lump, not nice at all. Drinks were fine and the staff were friendly.

We arrived on spec at around 5pm on a Saturday and on entering this quaint old village pub we noted that all the tables had been reserved, however, the young lady behind the bar told us that the chef would arrive at 6pm and that we could take one of the tables booked for 8pm if we could vacate it by 7.30pm.

We stayed at the Dolphin. We ate in the pub too which turned out to be very disappointing. We had travelled quite a way to get there. The locals in the pub garden were very friendly and the pub looked cozy and atmospheric to eat in. However, after placing our food order, we then waited an hour and twenty minutes to be served. the young waiter and waitress were lovely and apologised for the wait. The bar staff were however, very surly. We were the last to be served in the pub. There was another group with an elderly gentlemen who was wilting from the long wait for his dinner. When our food finally arrived, the meat was lukewarm so we sent it back. Mine returned exactly the same. The only thing that was speedy about the service was the bill arriving at our table. Usain Bolt could not have delivered it any quicker. the pub was highly recommended to me, but I wont be recommending it to any one.

Staff was rude when they got our order wrong and then correct it after a bit of telling them but the was going to refuse and service that day was not good. Was over charged with a coffee and cake we didnt have as an extra 7 pounds , Other times been good. Food nice.

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much

I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others
