We visited this pub with a group of friends last weekend. The door person in the entrance refused entry of one of our friends. He wouldn’t give an explanation when asked, but continued to let others in. He was unfriendly and extremely unhelpful. Definitely not an asset to the place. Our friend’s partner was let in and she was very upset that this happened. We were baffled why our friend was refused entry, and even after many attempts from us to find out why, we were none the wiser! Eventually, after some time, he was allowed to join us. We didn’t stay too long after that. It wasn’t ridiculously packed in there so I’m unsure why this happened. I think they felt out of their depth being that it was the scooter rally weekend? We didn’t have this issue in any other pub we went into. The only positive I can give about this place is that the older barman was efficient and polite.

Visited here August Bank Holiday and were the 1st people in when it opened so thought we were lucky to find somewhere with no queue. Wife ordered Fish & Chips which at £12.50 was expecting something impressive but what came was disappointing, I ordered the Steak & Ale Pie which I thought might be homemade but also that was disappointing when that came out and at £12.95 not worth the money. Expensive drinks as well.

Garlic bread starter was a bit better at £1.75 for three slices until we found out it was the adult portion at £4.75 each!! Fish and chips was dry, we had a portion of chips as well, also dry. The kids loved the ice cream fun at £2.75 each.. but at nearly £6 for two slices of margarita and nearly £10 for six slices of garlic bread… will not be coming again.. The worst food I’ve had in years. After a 90 minute wait for a chicken burger, a rump steak sandwich (£8.50) and a portion of dirty fries (£8.50) the food finally arrived and I wished it hadn’t. The burger to be fair was ok, the steak roll was missing the steak and the baguette had been cooked to within an inch of its life. The dirty fries were stone cold and the portion size was very small. I called the waitress to complain about the sandwich and the cold fries and she took the fries away to bring them back microwaved a minute later!

Popped in several times over our long weekend visit for Whitby Steampunk. Great staff, good selection of drinks, usually go for "Old Rosie" or "Rosie's Pig" ciders & quite often the ale as well. Didn't eat here this visit but have done before & found it good value for money. Nice to sit by windows for a view across the water. Fair bit of outside space to sit/stand if it's warm with huge parasols to keep the sun or rain off your top hat. Always a pleasant experience when you can get in.

We hadn’t noticed the one way system, so got shouted at by a staff member. Then one of our group stood up to go to the toilet, she hadn’t even had chance to put her mask on before a waiter told her to get it on!! Not a very nice experience when we just wanted to chill. Two of our group ordered joy chocolates, they were anything but hot! The coffee that one of our group ordered was all froth, there was literally only half a cup of coffee. A girlie day away we went into the Dolphin for food and drink . Menu was clear with prices etc but no drink prices shown . The young lady said she ordered the tea she had to pay for it . At that a young lad turned up rude as anything and said pay or leave , the attitude was absolutely dreadful , my sister left! The other 4 of us also left leaving our drinks . Looking at other reviews hear you seem to have a problem with staff attitude .Down the road we got a pot of tea several cups full for £1.70Please justify £2.80 for a cup of tea more so please justify why your customers are spoken to rudely by staff !

We found the staff to be rude, ignorant and unhelpful. We appreciate under the current restrictions that staff are busier than the norm. but trying to get the attention of the staff to order a round of drinks was nye on impossible. They repeatedly ignored us and on one occasion one of the staff said quite patronisingly 'Sorry darling I'm too busy.' Other customers who were sat around us commented on how gobsmacked they were regarding how rude they were being to us. One couple next to us were staying in the hotel that evening and said the staff's behaviour has made them decide not to stay there again. When we asked to speak to a manager the response was that the security guard requested us to leave. He was very polite with good people skills unlike the two members of bar staff who I feel may have chosen the wrong profession as they were lacking the basic principles of customer service.

Table service makes it more difficult for the staff who are on the go all the time as there’s very rarely an empty table and they’re working as hard as they can. With a thank you you can just make out a smile under their masks!! There’s a good selection of larger and beer to choose from. I can’t comment on the food as we didn’t eat. While I understand Covid capacities are a reality, we explicitly heard this particular man announcing to a fellow meathead how he is “tight with who he chooses to let in”. I didn’t realise my money was valued at less than those of an older age bracket... I visited on the 14th of March and I was appalled by the level of unprofessionalism by staff that were not working. One told me that they were the supervisor and the other a manager and the least I can say is neither of them behaved as even a standard member of staff would when not working. During this visit I witnessed one member sexually harass a customer and now visiting again and seeing neither have suffered the consequences it's safe to say that this pub does not care for customer service or even morals.

Called in the Dolphin Saturday morning, the girls had a coffee and the boys a beer. Had a look at the menu which was very basic, and decided not to order anything as we still had a good walk ahead. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We took a group of 10 in for a meal after we had been for a speedboat ride up from Scarborough, we were told the food maybe a while as we were a large group and it was quite busy. Everybody was so helpful, really friendly and the food was great.

We stayed here for one night whilst walking the Cleveland Way ...from the moment we walked in.we were acknowledged and made to feel welcome even though it was busy . The bar Staff were charming as was the young man who showed us to our room..The room was lovely and very clean and comfortable and the shower was absolutely great something that is a must on a walking holiday best shower of the week !. We had food in the evening overlooking the central harbour bridge which was delightful . No complaints about the food it was really tasty for the price we paid . We would definitely stay here again as in a great location not over priced ,delightful bar staff and obviously a very good cleaner as it was the cleanest place we had stayed in.whilst on our travels along the Cleveland Way.

Stayed at The Dolphin for a night over the Regatta weekend. Lovely big room with amazing views. The breakfast was fantastic - hubby had a full English and I have smashed avocado with poached egg. Ali and Dave were amazing hosts. We'll be back, thank you xxx

I only visited for drinks on 26th July in the evening. though there was quite a few in it wasnt packed out.My pint was ok but the service was extremely slow. A young girl behind the bar seemed to be doing everything on her own. The bloke behind there was slow and pretty useless from what i could see.My beer was OK and the price was reasonable.

I had looked online for dog-friendly pubs in Whitby and The Dolphin was on the list. We visited as a couple for an evening meal, accompanied by our two small dogs. As we arrived we were greeted by the landlord David, who told us that we could take the dogs into all areas except one (upper) dining area. There was a 'dog station' with water bowls and dog treats provided. We chose our main course (Hunter's Chicken and Baked Beef Lasagne) and were told as we ordered that the supper club deal had just started and so we were able to order a dessert (knickerbocker glory). The food was excellent, well-presented, and although the place seemed busy, service was quite prompt. The location is central, just on one end of the swing bridge, and we shall make a point of coming back here.

We visited the dolphin, on advice that it was a welcoming and enjoyable place to go. It was the opposite infact, with us been spoken to in a negative, disrespectful manner, by whom I’m assuming is the owner/boss, after we spent lots of money in this poor establishment. The other staff were an asset to the place. The food and drinks were overpriced. Will not be returning

Had the Steak and Ale Pie on May 1, and it was mostly filled with a gooey semi-clear substance, probably corn starch based. Just three pieces of meat. Server didn’t seem to care much. Said she’d tell them in the kitchen but offered nothing more. Be forewarned.

Don’t miss this location! We are traveling over from America and had an absolutely amazing experience here. Owner was the definition of hospitality for us and could not be more highly regarded. Location was beautiful with amazing views of the river and delicious food. Our only regret is that we did not stay here overnight as well! True English feel pub!

Visited to watch the football and have a bite to eat while staying in Whitby. Not very wheelchair accessible as an old building, however staff were helpful and we did manage. Very clean, with good food at reasonable prices and a nice atmosphere. All staff were pleasant and friendly, it was a pity we only found this place on the last night of our stay.

This is a handy place to eat when visiting Whitby Abbey especially after climbing up the steps. Decent number of tables inside and out. It can get busy and likely there may be a queue. It is part of the Youth Hostel and serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, cakes as well as larger meal options. We all had paninis which were nice enough and the side order of chips were nice. Nothing spectacular but it filled a gap well and with nice views.

Called in for fish and chips to share - £10. Opened the box to find the fish in three pieces. Rancid oil taste to both fish and hard chips. Truly the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten.

The cat's pyjamas? Dog's dinner more like. After initially nearly leaving due to the horrible atmosphere we settled and ordered a breakfast and avocado and halloumi on toast with two coffees. Our drinks arrived quickly but the food mustve taken about 45 minutes to come, with no acknowledgement of the long wait. It wasnt particularly busy. When the food arrived it was awful. The breakfast was greasy and badly cooked and I couldnt finish it. The avocado and halloumi on toast was literally a few slices of avocado and overcooked halloumi, on the side of some burnt toast. Dont bother, there are far nicer places in Scarborough.

For a large pub and the fact it was late on in the day on a Saturday, it was very clean and the staff were very polite. Food was good and nice selection of beer.
