Hmmmm, looking at the mixed reviews i can see where people are coming from. Went for the Sunday lunch, firstly they seemed a bit overwhelmed by the number of people they had in, shouldn't be as they had a list of bookings and should have been more prepared. 1 person serving at the bar on a busy Sunday lunchtime, never going to go down well. The food is a carvery, £10 per person, buy your ticket at the bar, an ok system. Went for 2 meats, beef and gammon, there was turkey and pork. The meat was served to your plate and you picked the spuds and veg yourself. The meat was ok, beef a little dry but to be expected as it was towards the last of the joint, gammon ok as well. The Yorkshire was a bit soggy, could have done with an extra few minutes in the oven. All the veg and i mean all the veg was under seasoned, i kinda get this as they are catering for the masses, but i'm sorry, i've never seen a chef/cook not use any seasoning. Pedigree was good, when you actually got it.

First warning not good, arrived at restaurant and only one other table in use. Placed order for food, after a while asked how much longer the food would be to be told its was on its way with the other tables. 5 mins later the other tables food arrived followed by ours. 3 of 4 dishes we orded had been microwaved, chilli and lasagne hot on the edge cold in the middle, my husband eat the lasagne becuase he was hungry. My cajun chicken again was micowaved and tasted nothing like cajun chicken. The only dish that was edible was the steak. The lady from the other table approached us and asked how our food was, which we told her, her reply was that their food was not nice and they were leaving without paying. We followed her lead but paid for the lasagne and the steak. Shame as a lovely village pub, the staff very freindly but not concerned about the standard of the food.

Absolutely dreadful, the customer service by the young lady behind the bar who also took our order was non-existent and very rude. What went wrong: - argumentative bar lady - arguing that the ham, eggs and chips was just 1 egg when the menu said 2 - getting the eggs cooked incorrectly (one was meant to be well cooked) and taking 5 minutes to decide if it could be taken back to the kitchen to see the frying pan for a minute more - eventually agreed to 2 eggs each and these came out piecemeal, meanwhile the food on the plates was getting cold - a side of onion rings and one of salad did not arrive. When I asked about this she went to the kitchen to check. She came back and said as she had not put that part of our order through to the kitchen, the chef refused to cook it now! - I asked then if I put a new order in for them now, will the chef cook them. I was initially told no, as they were not on the original order they would not be cooked now! They eventually relented and onion rings arrived about 15 minutes after the first main - my friend ordered half a pint of beer, a full pint arrived. The lady acknowledged it was her mistake (she did use the words "it's my mistake" an awful lot yesterday), but we were still charged for the pint. What went right: Nothing The rudeness of the lady at the bar, and the attitude of whoever is in the kitchen is appalling. I am all for saving local pubs, but this one really needs a shake up.

This was our 1st time at the Dog and Gun for a family gathering of 30 people Charlotte and her husband were very welcoming and friendly and helpful, nothing was to much trouble. The buffet was very generous with lots of variety for all, there was a bouncy castle for the children in the large garden with plenty of outdoor seating with a large car park. We will revisit and we highly recommend you use the Dog and Gun for your family gathering or just visit this traditional pub.

We live fairly locally to this pub and used to visit under old management and it was a lovely country pub with a nice atmosphere. However it has now been taken over by a new landlady and all I can say is rude with no customer service at all. We ordered a round of drinks one being a prosecco to which the bottle was handed over and we were asked if we wanted a glass with it. Very strange question as I don't know many who would drink a prosecco with friends straight from the bottle. Secondly a gin was ordered which was a half measure served in a cola glass no ice or slice offered. When advised a gin cannot be served in a glass like this the rude landlady said we haven't got any we've been busy, when questioned about a dishwasher she stated 'yeah it's washing what do you want me to do?' She then proceeded to pull a gin glass from under the bar. Clearly had them just had no care as to how her drinks are served. She is not welcoming and purely a rude obnoxious individual who appears to welcome people she knows and has no interest in other customers. The indoors has a dreadful smell coming from the toilets.

18 moths since last visit due to Covid. Under new management who were very friendly and made us welcome. A good choice of beers and the usual selection of spirits. We were the only customers for dinner the young lady who showed us to our table was very chatty and made us feel special. The chef took our food order and served us. The starters were well cooked and presented. The mains of cod and chips and sirloin steak were again perfectly cooked and presented. The restaurant was tired and needs a good update probably been neglected through Covid.

Went to the dog and gun because a friend recommended it to us, the staff was really nice and very welcoming. Me and my husband had the 8oz sirloin steak the sauce's wasn't on the menu but the chef came out and said he would make me a peppercorn sauce and it was honestly one of the best I've ever had. The steak came with mushrooms, onion rings, grilled tomato, chips and peas the food was really nice I would recommend. No problem with that. I think it was £8.95 for the roast beef so was not expecting a gourmet meal but was very disappointed with the thin slices of flaky beef, the roast potatoes which were more like chips but especially the vegetables which all tasted as if they had been in vinegar.

We went here on a quite evening early on. Waited ages for someone to take our order and then even longer for our meal to come. Starters were nice. The lamb shank I had for my main was dry and chewy, it didn't fall off the bone like it should do if slow roasted. Both our desserts were served on plates with big, obvious chips out of the rims. This made me think if a chef can happily send food out on plates like that they clearly don't have very high standards. I certainly won't be returning in a hurry.

It should be emphasised that The Dog & Gun is in the lovely village of Kilby a few miles out of Wigston. The pub is very popular with both locals and non-locals and is particularly worth a visit on a sunny day when the extensive garden area is a wonderful place to sit one of the many tables and just admire the countryside views. We arrived as the pub opened at 12 noon on a Sunday without booking a table for the four of us. We were told that the restaurant room was fully booked but that a table could be found if we would eat straightaway. We agreed and were shown to a reasonable table in the restaurant.I have been to this pub many times over the years and whilst the outside and main bar areas are great the restaurant does appear somewhat dark and tired - it could certainly benefit from a return. We ordered from the £10 for two courses Sunday Lunch Menu - 2 asparagus soups and 2 pate followed by 4 roast beefs. This is very good value. The meal was OK without really exciting the taste buds. Soup and Pate were sound and tasty but I was a little disappointed with the main course. The slices of beef were fine and the homemade Yorkshire was very good as was the gravy - the roast potatoes needed about 15 minutes more cooking for crispness whilst the bowl of veg (boiled potatoes, cabbage, French beans and carrots) were largely overcooked/uninspiring.There were no condiments on the table and we had to pinch salt and pepper pots from other tables after our starters were served. Pots of horseradish and mustard were given but no spoons to use. The large dish containing the veg had chips/cracks and just one serving spoon. It was also noticeable that we had different types of crockery and cutlery among our 4 main meals. To be fair plates were largely cleared and everyone enjoyed their meal. Service was perfectly good. It was good value for money but hardly memorable for the food.

Their garden is large so kids can run free (also has a hill for rolling down!) Car park large. There is a pretty dog walk behind it so it's great to bring the dogs & sit in the garden pre/post walk. Food is great with lots of choice. In the winter they have the open fires in the bar & restaurant which is lovely. Really nice place in a lovely area

We went here yesterday lunch. I ordered a BLT special and my Fiance had a jacket. There was nothing special about the sandwich. The bacon was pieces of uncooked fat and the so called granary bread was a typical value brown bread soggy in the middle and stale and crusty on the outside. I am not a fussy eater and cannot recall when I last left food in a restaurant but I did this. My Partners jacket looked dry and not too good either and he left his also. Not surprisingly the waitress did not ask if we enjoyed our food when our plates were collected. The staff did seem friendly though. The pub itself had gone really down hill and I could only describe it as the appearance of a dirty sticky old bingo hall. Carpets were worn the kitchen looked dirty. But the garden was lovely and had nice views of the countryside.

This has always been one of my favourite pubs in South Leicestershire for a pint and a bite to eat, but it's living on past glories these days.A frosty welcome (the lady serving us continued talking to a local and exchanged no pleasantries with us), and an average lunch menu.Add to that the disgusting toilets and a carpet in the bar which has not been cleaned in years, and I'm amazed it carries on trading.I suspect it survives on regular trade, because there is little to entice the newcomer.

This is a lovely country pub which is not far from home so a nice place to retreat to and so have visited a handful of times. Always go hoping that the food will surprise us but sadly, it never does in a positive way. The vegetables are over-cooked to the point of having no texture or taste. Meat is usually ok. Presentation could be improved as food often looks as bland as it tastes. With someone in the kitchen caring for the cooking, this experience could be excellent-I hope that they improve it.

Went here for a family meal as we had travelled up from Devon. Really disappointed with the service and lack of thought from the staff. We ordered our food at 815pm and we ordered 3 lamb shanks and a medium rump steak. Our meal arrived at 950pm and there were only 2 lamb and the rump steak. We were left waiting another 10mins and when they bought out the last meal it was not lamb but a sirloin steak! They just put it in front of me without even explaining. When challenged they said they had run out of the lamb and this was the only option. My partner complained to the landlady and they didn't charge us for the sirloin or the bottle of wine, but I would of rather had the meal I asked for instead the only one who benefited from the steak was the dog! And I felt rubbish as was drinking the wine on an empty stomachWill definitely not go there again ! Also the table opposite us had 2meals missing too.

My wife passes by this Pub on the way into work each day, so we decided to give it a try. It was well worth it. Plenty of car parking available (off road) and after reserving a table, we received a warm welcome. The menu was varied enough without having several options serving the same piece of chicken(eg Pub chain food). We chose two dishes, Fish and Lamb. The fish was served in a very crispy tasty batter and came with chunky chips. It had taste and was very well presented. The Lamb Shank was awesome and fell off the bone. It had been slow cooked(3 hours) and was supplied by a local butcher. It came with a bowl full of fresh veg. The food was hot all the way through eating our meals thanks to hot plates and the portions were for a hungry appetite. This was one of the best meals that we have had for many a year and we strongly recommend this pub. It is very handy if in the area around Kilby, such as Wistow, Kibworth, Great Glen, Foxton, Market Harborough, Wigston, Oadby, Countesthorpe.

Having traveled from Leicester we were looking forward to a quiet restful meal. The welcome was good and we found a table and sat down. However as she was sitting down my partner moved her chair and caught her finger in between the seat and the joint of a loose leg. Having brought her full weight down the nip was very painful making her feel sick. She was unable to think straight for a few minutes. Although we reported it to the staff their response left a lot to be desired. In the interest of balance they did change the chair, offer a plaster and knocked the price of our drinks of the bill. However they clearly thought we were making a big deal out of nothing. There was little empathy or any attempt to genuinely check my partner was okay. Given that she was injured by a piece of their furniture, a visit from the manager/landlord would have demonstrated some concern for a customer. As it was, we felt that the staff avoided mentioning the incident out of embarrassment, uncertainty of how to handle it or a lack of experience. To ensure that it was noted we requested that it recorded in the pubs accident book, but this was left for us to do - again it felt that it was too much trouble. This incident aside, the rest of the service from the male waiters and the food was excellent. The atmosphere is good and they appear to have spent some money on refurbishments. The 3 course for £15 deal is good value. It's a shame that a lack of consideration and customer care spoilt was could have been a very enjoyable evening. Concern and a little fuss cost nothing. We will go back and do recommend the pub. It's in a nice location and has a good outside seating area for better weather.

We arrived in the doorway and the couple in front were checking out the meny and subsequently took their order and showed them to a table. We were shown to a sticky wobbly table in a nearly empty restaurant and told she would return to take our order. No eye contact was made whilst she continued back and forward to the kitchen and tables. In the meantime the previous couple had been served their meal. Just at the point we thought we would go elsewhere (approx 30 minutes) another waitress took our order by which time the other customers were finishing their meal. The worst yet was to come, a terrible vegetarian breakfast. of cold eggs and undercooked hash browns and the worst tasting vegetarian sausage ever, inedible. The other meal of fish and chips was of a poor standard of undercooked chips underwhelming fish and cold peas. When paying first of all i was given other persons bill and then asked to complete a review questionnaire. We explained the meal was terrible and she said hence why we want the form filled in. Apart from feeling very cold and having to keep our coats on we never felt any great customer service. They certainly need a chef who knows how to cook food. it was poor on every level and it will never be repeated.
