The Dog in Amber Valley

I recently visited The Dog at Pentrich, expecting a pleasant meal, but the experience was far from it. Throughout the entire dinner, a group of clearly intoxicated locals crowded the bar, swearing loudly and creating a disruptive atmosphere. What made it worse was when we raised our concerns with the waitress, who merely shrugged it off, stating, “They’re regulars.” This response was unacceptable—regulars or not, no one should have to endure such behavior while dining. The lack of attention to basic customer service ruined what could have been a nice evening. I won’t be returning, or be a ‘regular’ myself

I went with my hubby . The dog was recommended to us by my brother in law .it did not disappoint neither. The food was absolutely beautiful. I had fish chips and peas (delicious) my hubby had the steak and ale pie (delicious) The chips are home made . we was served by Gracie . She was absolutely lovely. Very nice and friendly . Spontaneously popped in for lunch on a Hen Do post activity. We recieved a warm welcome and delicious food - even better the bride-to-be recieved a bottle of prosecco on the house! All round fantastic experience with a large group.

Went here for my Daughters birthday with the clan. Staff were phonominal, very attentive, pub looks amazing, Mixed reviews on the food, the fish was very oily and unfortunately tated like oil rather than fish and i love a good crispy battered fish unfortunately i didn't get this, the pie and the steak were very nice as I was told and the [Dog] burgers were average..onion rings were mushy. Overall a little over priced for the food served up. But the setting was great. Was an experience but don't think I'll be rushing back any time soon.

This pub is an absolute gem. We were a ‘walk in’ and were met by a lovely waitress called Izzy. She made us feel really comfortable and allowed us lots of time to order. The food was fabulous- a chicken Caesar salad and a halloumi burger. We were allowed to stay and chat for ages and not made to feel as though we were in the way. We will definitely be returning and a massive thank you to Izzy for making our evening so special.

First visit in a while and disappointed. Table booked mid week for 6.45. Table ready but told four of the main meals had sold out which narrowed the choice a little. Ordered starters to be then told one had sold out. Service of food very slow but checked on drinks every two minutes. asked for garlic mayo to go with chicken wings starter as no dips or sauces to be told only normal mayo available. Chips looked great but meal pretty average!

Visited today for lunch with my Mum & Dad, lovely to see the restaurant so busy. Service was a little slow but to be expected on a Saturday lunch and also gave us time for a lovely family catch up. All the food was great quality freshly cooked, braised beef was tender and tasty. No idea why previous review mentioned a microwave! Lovely local pub

Really disappointed We have it a go after not going for years and didn’t eat a thing Everything is microwaved and really mediocre food It’s a new venture for the pub with it not opening very long I get that but they need to change the cook because there is a lot better for the price locally Sorry but won’t be returning hope they sort out the food side and also the gents toilets could do with a good clean

Fabulous Sunday lunch today with friends at The Dog at Pentrich !! Great ambience with warm friendly service from all staff & nothing too much trouble, with cauliflower cheese cooked to our preference perfectly thank you .

We all really enjoyed our lunch at the Dog , can recommend the Mushroom Ciabatta & the chips are really good , lovely service too , The great guys behind the bar Felix & Rupert were away but the staff are were very efficient & friendly ..its so good to have the Dog open again & great people running it.

Whilst in the area we ate here twice, The staff were all very friendly, we all enjoyed our food, hence the return visit. We also took a relative whom it turned out was Gluten Free, and she enjoyed her Belly Pork dinner.

Lovely, friendly and relaxing atmosphere, Great Food, definitely a hidden Gem, we were just passing thro, I read the local reviews for a local restaurant and decided on here, we were told that they’d only been open for 2 months. If your passing, it’s definitely worth stopping in

Exactly 1 year since Jane and Adam left we sampled a Sunday dinner. Already impressed with their weekday menu, we hadn’t yet tried the Sunday lunch. It was really really good. The roast potatoes were possibly the best we’ve ever had in a pub! A lovely silverside of beef and all the trimmings. The staff although relatively new to the trade, make up for it with enthusiasm and attention. It’s rapidly becoming another home from home and a lovely place to spend time.

Very busy; drinks sorted before everyone arrived. Lunch was really lovely although a little wait-staff explained why-misunderstanding about the red wine but sorted out so not a problem! The food service and atmosphere was delightful we will be back-well done to the staff!

So good to see the ‘dog’ open again, it’s been missed. The real change, however, has been the focus on customer service. Under the previous management the customers were treated as a hindrance (we stopped going) now under the current management you feel extremely welcome. We visited twice over the Christmas period, once for drinks and once for food. Both visits were extremely enjoyable. A great atmosphere and cosy pub for drinks. Regarding the food visit I think they have got this right. A good ‘pub menu’, reasonably priced, but the quality was superb. I had rump steak, medium rare, not a common choice for me as it’s so easy to get wrong so I don’t always trust places to get it right. But get it right they did! Cooked to perfection with proper chips (piping hot) and onion rings. Credit to the new people, keep it going.

Visited The Dog last night and it was just great, good atmosphere and marvellous food. The service was promt and the waitresses were very attentive. All in all a great night well done The Dog.

Upon arrival the car park was full to capacity, with more people arriving by the minute. Despite having booked weeks in advance, the restaurant had no record of our reservation, despite this and being very busy a table was found and orders taken. The food took a long time to arrive and was in fairness pretty good. Servers were very busy and it was hard to get their attention, and near impossible to get to the bar, so we went without an additional drink. We also decided against a desert simply because it was getting very late and the waiting time was likely to be long even if we could get a servers attention. The venue was deafeningly noisy throughout my visit, to a point where it was impossible to hold a conversation without shouting. The pub has been nicely refurbished, the staff are friendly, the food is good. Unfortunately they try to cram too many people in and it makes for an unpleasant experience. I will not be going back.

Super Covid times Friday Treat. What a pleasure, super evening meal from this favourite local pub. The food may have been ‘take away’ but was a good as their usual service.

We last visited ‘The Dog’ in the pretty Derbyshire village of Pentrich in August 2018. My review then wasn’t particularly complimentary; whilst the food was of a good standard, the service was abysmal - inattentive, dismissive, and lacking warmth and customer care. We visited again in July 2020. It was our first ‘dine-in’ experience since pandemic lockdown restrictions were eased, and we were extremely nervous about venturing into a restaurant. However, we were very pleased with the care that all diners were given, as well as the high quality food we enjoyed.Firstly, all requirements relating to inside dining and social distancing were in place; we had to wait at the entrance to be seated (it was prompt); hand sanitiser was available, and staff were wearing shields and kept their distance. Tables were very well spaced, and staff kept a suitable distance during ordering and service. We felt safe. Our meals were excellent. The chicken skewer, served with humus, a tabbouleh salad, and flatbread, was ample in flavour and size. The monk fish was also tasty and well presented. We accompanied these meals with a generous serving of fries with a ranch sauce, and a battered cauliflower dish (called popcorn cauliflower, if I remember correctly). These sides were exceptional, particularly the popcorn cauliflower. Service was prompt and attentive, and we enjoyed our meal at a leisurely and relaxed pace. There’s outside seating for summer dining, and a spacious bar area with an eclectic drinks menu. There’s also ample off-street parking. The pub is in quite a rural location so you’ll probably need to drive; the 148 bus connects to the larger Derbyshire towns of Alfreton, Ripley and Codnor. We will return.

A friend and I, on a trip to Derbyshire, made a point of visiting The Dog, a pub I last visited over 50 years ago. It was great to see little had changed. It was a lovely day, and we took the opportunity to sit in the garden, to admire the superb views over the local countryside. The service was really friendly and the beer excellent.

We visited 'The dog' for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. Lots to choose from a varied menu. We chose the Ashover Roast Pork. It was beautifully cooked and served with 4 dishes of vegetables which were cooked to perfection. I chose the lemon cheesecake whilst my partner had the Blackberry Sundae. The staff were friendly and helpful. We felt our visit was a real treat. We will be back soon

HAD booked lunch at this venue that we had not visited for a number of years, arrived on time and were shown straight to our table, then the wait began, 20 minutes after arriving the drinks waiter came and took our order which were the quickly served but we then had to wait another 20 minutes for the meal order to be taken, and no more offers of another drink, we'd finished the last. THE LUNCH CAME ANOTHER 25 MINUTES AFTER ORDERING, and it as to be said was very tasty and well cooked. However I was going past it by then, needless to say, we did,t wait for a dessert.

The food is somewhere beyond fabulous, the 60 year old claims it was the best pie he has ever eaten. The fish and chips were great, the homemade mushy peas and tartare were exceptional. Every single member of staff was lovely and they even welcomed our over excited puppy with open arms (literally)..... If we didn't live in London I'd be here twice a week. Thank you all.

Went tonight with my partner and young children all I can say is I haven’t quite experienced a place like it. It’s flawless! The food is fantastic and offering different to the norm and the out front staff are great. I’m not sure how anyone can find fault with this place (Karen below). Petty comments because someone had a vape in their hand, grow up. You’re judging then on their service and food not their personal habits. Thank you to the dog a new special place to visit.

Visited tonight with my partner and our two children. The pub itself is beautiful, the service is fantastic and the food was absolutely incredible! All of the staff are friendly, attentive and genuinely seem to care about what they are doing, and despite not having high chairs (which they pre warned us about on booking so we could bring cushions for our little one to sit on) they made our toddler very welcome even when he wasn’t on his best behaviour! I really enjoyed my first time eating out since having our second baby.. and we will definitely be back!

Lovely food and plenty of it, social distancing is making life difficult for the hospitality industry so congratulations to all the staff for a thoroughly enjoyable meal/afternoon. Also, excellent value for money .

Amazing food and great staff! I’ve been here a number of times for food and it has always been lovely, nothing to fault at all. Super tasty food that is packed with flavour. You can really tell that they take pride and care in the food they present. The staff are also super friendly, lovely and always looking after you. The place is always spotless, no mess left anywhere, even the times I’ve sat outside, staff are quick to clear up plates and glasses. The systems put in place to keep people safe in these strange times are well thought out too, which makes an even better and more relaxing experience. I would highly recommend this place to anybody. Great food, great staff, keep up the hard work in these strange times. Oh, make sure you have a sundae, they are amazing!!

Visited this pub today with my two young daughters. We are fairly local to this pub and have always had good meals. Today’s meal was no different - the food was lovely. Unfortunately whilst sat at our table I had visibility of the kitchen through the serving hatch. I witnessed one of the chefs Vaping in the kitchen! I raised it with a young member of the waiting team as he emptied our table but he didn’t seem overly interested in my concerns. I then asked to speak to the Manager. The young member of waiting staff had already had words with her. She went into the kitchen to speak to the chef before speaking to me. On speaking with me I was told the chef had only got his e cigarette out ready for his break and that there are two sides to every story. It’s very clear when someone is Vaping due to the cloud it generates! Why would I raise a concern had I not witnessed the incident? What do I stand to gain? Vaping is certainly not a habit I wish to highlight to my young girls. On returning home I wasn’t happy that my concerns had not been taken seriously. Companies generally place Vaping in the same category as smoking and do not allow it on the premises. With the added complication of Covid-19 I wouldn’t have thought that blowing clouds of vapour whilst prepping and cooking customers food is considered responsible. Given the tough time the pubs and restaurants in particular have had over recent months you would expect better standards. I have telephoned and spoken with one of the owners who had already been made aware of the incident. I have expressed my concerns about what I have seen and that at the time I initially raised my concerns I felt they were not being treated seriously. I was assured the matter would be investigated and I received an apology. Due to the seriousness of this I want to let others know. Everyone makes there own decisions on the risks they are happy to take. We won’t be returning to the Dog Inn at Pentrich.
