The service has declined since we last dined here. Little touches have disappeared. The wine is now plonked on the table and initial glass no longer poured. I had the lamb wellington, and was somewhat disappointed to receive 2 small cubes of meat. It was very nice though as was the rest of our meal.

The menu looked nicer than the actual food tasted. The beefburger was disappointing as it said 6oz on the menu but this was no more than 4oz. We had the chefs speciality desert which cost £12.50 and was not worth the money. Will not be coming back and would not recommend to anyone.

Service very poor in the terrace bar. Lovely views out. The staff who served us for lunch and drinks really needed more training in customer service. It wasn't very busy when we were there but the wait for the meal was lengthy and then did not arrive altogether. Some staff were walking around with meals that they couldn't find who had ordered, chaotic. Had to ask for our table to be cleared.

We went for afternoon tea for my relative’s 94th birthday and even though I added this to the booking section I was disappointed that no mention was made by the staff, I would have thought a candle on a cake was not much to expect! Why ask the question if no special attention is on offer? The food was very average with sparse fillings in the sandwiches and the scones were more like bread rolls, not English scones. As always it is the setting which is the reason to visit Petwood not the service sadly

We took our 94 year old mother out for a pre- Christmas lunch on Sunday. It was our first visit to the Petwood Hotel, and we were not disappointed. I'd enquired before arrival about menu and access arrangements and the serving staff had read notes, and were so attentive and courteous. The meal was delicious, too, and there was even a pianist playing at the entrance to the restaurant, which added to the ambiance. We felt very well looked after, and will be returning again before too long.

We were thrilled to finally get booked in for a meal at the Petwood after Covid rather delayed things! The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, especially after a false fire alarm had us congregating in the car park in freezing temperatures and snow falling! The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, with a good choice despite the reduced menu. The only downside was being sat right beside the door, which meant it lacked the atmosphere of a table further inside and we felt a little bit excluded. The birthday card left for my husband was a lovely touch. Tx

On arrival for lunch, a pleasant young man showed us to a table in an uninteresting room with very plain wooden tables and chairs. I then visited the Ladies and discovered an adjacent, much more attractive and welcoming room with large bay windows and several tables. Some tables even had white table linen. When the ladies on the next table were asked for their order, they were heard to say 'we were just thinking you had forgotten about us'. Clearly they had been waiting ages. Another party nearby expressed their disappointment with one of their meals. Our table was wooden with a glass top which revealed numerous stains on the wooden table top - not at all what I expected. We ordered Ham, Egg and Chips - the chips were almost cold and some were hard and not fully cookedThe staff generally did not seem very engaged with their customers and appeared to be poorly trained. As I took my final mouthful of edible food, a member of staff stood by the table and asked ' have you finished now, I could take your plate' I was still chewing and don't usually speak with my mouth full!We haven't been to the hotel for years but have fond memories of visits for meals and attending balls. On this occasion we had decided to eat with you after a visit to the BBMF Centre and having considered the range of eating establishments in Woodhall Spa felt the Petwood would be a good choice.Sadly we were wrong and are unlikely to visit again or recommend you to others.

I cannot comment on the hotel facilities, as I have not stayed as a guest. What I can say it the the once upmarket Sunday lunch has totally lost it's charm. The accomplished piano player in the hall, the cosy log fire, silver service and happy efficient staff have all gone.Instead there is a cold, silent, unwelcoming building, surly unmotivated staff, watery vegetables and no ambience.Management must energise the whole business, otherwise they will squander the legacy of this fine historic building.

my husband and I had dinner at the petwood on Saturday 13th November. We had tried to book a stay there but they were full, so decided to dine there instead. It was a treat as my husband works for nhs and has been doing 7 day weeks through most of the year. We fancied a break and a treat. The gardens and outside of the building is lovely and we had a walk round , then as soon as we walked in we were treated in a friendly and efficient manner. The lady and gentleman serving were lovely and couldn't do enough for us. Meal was delicious, I had chicken in lime and honey marinade and peanut butter tart. We asked if we could have a look around and was told of course, and we had a little look at the dambuster room ,and the downstairs, all lovely. we felt a bit bad as it is card payment only so couldn't leave a tip, but we would love to visit again, and hopefully stay. I would highly recommend it. I saw previous reviews mentioning the younger staff who are training, all I will say is that all the staff including the younger ones were exemplary. Looking forward to visiting again, Ann and Richard

This review (which was requested by Trip Advisor) has been delayed to allow reasonable time for Petwood Hotel to fully address my group's dissatisfaction with an October Sunday lunch. We considered the quality of service, food, and staff attitude so below standard on that date that a written complaint was submitted the next day. I duly received a written response from a member of senior management stating that I would be contacted by them to discuss my concerns and that another staff member would issue a full refund. To date, some 4 weeks later, nothing has been actioned.Ignoring both customers and their feedback misses the opportunity to make positive changes to products and services. Complaints give the opportunity to neutralise negatives and build stronger relationships with customers, whereas issue non-resolution does nothing to aid customer retention. Even if the customer’s initial experience was negative, by demonstrating that the business is eager to rectify the situation, they can turn unhappy customers into loyal ones. Petwood Hotel needs to realise that by not using complaints as a vehicle for improvement it is doing itself a great disservice. Service users that take the time to submit a poor opinion, do so because they want a better experience, not only for themselves, but for future customers. It is rather sad that this company's Customer Service maxim appears to be making “ shoot the messenger” a popular sport.

We were really looking forward to Sunday lunch at The Petwood after a 2 year break due to Covid etc. In the past we always enjoyed excellent ambience, food and service. The weather was sunny but not the mood of the reception staff who we heard telling someone off loudly for “not booking on-line”. This did not bode well, but worse was to follow.“We are pleased to welcome you” it said on the website, but the lack of other visible staff in the building made us wonder if a mass alien abduction had taken place. The bar resembled the deck of the Marie Celeste. It was empty, cold and silent, apart from a strange machine in a cupboard that was gurgling and popping. The dining room didn't look Covid-friendly as the tables seemed rather close together without any perspex screens between them. The few waiting staff looked like school-kids who had brought their old black & white clothes from home to wear. They seemed to lack direction as well as masks. The food itself was a total let-down. The food was more “transport cafe” than “fine dining”. . The “team of talented chefs” mentioned in other reviews seemed to be having a lie-in and sent some trainees as replacements. The roast dinners looked nothing like the picture on the website. The plates were covered in a brown sludge that we took to be gravy. The meat, when uncovered, was so fatty that I suspect the animal, in life, had been a stunt double for a Sumo wrestler. We played “hunt the tiny roasties” and managed to score 3 and they were like bullets. The unidentifiable vegetables were pale and flaccid. We thought we had somehow walked into an episode of “Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares” by mistake, yet trying to find and gain the attention of any staff member was as effective as trying to herd cats. So we gave up, paid up and left - vowing never to return. All in all totally underwhelming. The only high point of the visit was walking around the gardens and looking at the remains of a Bouncing Bomb. A few days later we discovered that out of the 10 hotels listed in Woodhall Spa, The Petwood had the lowest Local Authority Food Hygiene Rating.

Beautiful setting in the wondeful Woodhall Spa. The hotel itself is a delight, a delightful throwback to less troubled times somehow. I felt very relaxed here. Its history and "extras" such as the room dedicated to the exploits of the RAF during WWII were really interesting. <Hint - anyone who built Airfix warplane models during their childhood should visit>. And the tea itself was extremely good - everything was beautifully put together and presented, and very tasty. I think an extra option of "savoury" afternoon tea would be a brilliant extra choice for those who don't have the sweetest of teeth. Great staff too, no fuss or bother, just did the job professionally.

Although we have visited The Petwood many times we have not previously partaken of Sunday lunch. Now we realise this was a serious omission! The two or three course lunch menu offers a good selection of dishes including traditional roasts. We were seated in the wood-panelled dining room with background music by an accomplished pianist on the grand piano. Service was good and the food was delicious and nicely presented. With two courses at £26.95 and three courses at £29.95 we felt this was good value given the quality of the food and the surroundings.

We were given the Sunday lunch menu as soon as seated, although had to ask for the drinks menu. It was a bit disappointing that the only vegetarian main course on the menu was potato gnocci served with potatoes. Otherwise it was all OK: the food was nicely prepared and presented, service was good, The Dining Room is a pleasant setting for a meal, and the gardens are nice to stroll in if weather permits. All up £120 for lunch for three, including a drink each. Overall, a pleasant experience, but not quite as good as I would expect for this money, it would be good to see a bit more effort made on the menu options, both the meaty and the vegetarian.

Front of house ‘stand in’ poor- we really don’t care if you are usually behind the scenes, can’t get the system to work…etc, ets….you just don’t moan and tell the customers, very obviously management, who thought she was ‘beneath the job’!!Our lovely waitress (s) were smiling and helpful, despite getting the brunt of many complaints and actually said, please complain or nothing will be done. Presumably the manager who declined to come and talk to us merely telling to waitress not to charge for desserts thought that was enough….definitely not! Have been to the Petwood many times both as a resident and for dinner / lunch. Probably my favourite hotel anywhere in the world for its wonderful ambience and being in the village where my mother was born. The whole industry has had and is still having an incredibly tough time following the pandemic and the Petwood is no exception. Staffing issues in particular have had a major impact with thousands of people leaving hospitality for other work. HOWEVER, my wife and I visited along with my brother and his wife for dinner on Saturday and both the service and the food were faultless. Staff were warm, friendly, helpful and smiling, service was fast and efficient and the food was excellent. The note on the menu apologising for its limitations due to staffing challenges they were facing left us wondering what to expect but those expectations were well and truly exceeded. Hopefully people will continue to support the Petwood in these difficult days and I would highly recommend a visit.

Staff - friendly, attentive and happy to serve. The did the best with what they were given.But...The food - for the 80 pounds we spent on the two course offering (we declined the third course option after having pushed through the appetisers and mains), which included a proper tip, two coffees, and a bottle of water, I expected better. The menu was pedestrian in its offering and although some might say 'standard fare' in an olde English sort of way, it severely lacked in originality or creativity. This was a menu from 1978, offered at a 2021 price.Had the food been up to scratch then this quirk of a time warp would have been completely fine, but I don't think that anyone on staff or in charge of kitchen or in management can have possibly tasted any of the dishes themselves. Had they done so, then I suspect the preparation and quality would have been overhauled a long time ago.The veg was watery and tasteless. The gravy was something akin to Bisto and the meat - whilst not overcooked, was severely under seasoned and the salt at the table did nothing to remedy this problem. The roast potatoes were tasteless and impossible to cut into without really leaning into it. Presentation - The cutlery on the tables is left over from any school cafeteria - although we asked for and did receive perfectly lovely steak knives when the time called for it. The uniforms worn by staff are basically of a 'bring your black trousers and a white shirt from home and you're fine to work here' design. And not one staffer was wearing a protective mask - which shows very little regard for either their safety or customer needs to feel confident that the management is looking after our best interests. Whilst the tables were well spread apart, it seemed that all the clients were bunched into one area where we were in much closer proximity with one another than we needed to be.Considering the grand exterior of the building, and the expansive dimensions of the dining room, and of course the price - we left feeling very underserved and a bit misled about what a nice Sunday Roast it was meant to be.Saying all this, the afternoon tea that others were having looked really nice. Perhaps that is what we should have come for instead.I hope that management gets more involved, and at the very least sends someone to dine by anonymously pretending to be a customer in order to see what the experience is really like. You can do better.

I am sorry to say that my experiences here are going downhill each visit. Last time we booked we had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. This time we were seated quickly but despite the very low numbers in the restaurant we seemed to have been forgotten. Eventually we were asked to order. We went for the afternoon tea. It was okay but not worth £24.50 per person. The waiting staff were not seen again for an hour so I took myself to the bar to order drinks. Then when we went back to the bar to pay the bill. My wife had a voucher for her birthday but paying this way caused problems. We had to email the voucher to the reception. It all seemed too much. For £50 for two people, I think we will go elsewhere in the future.

When we booked the Afternoon Tea online, we stated that one member of our group had dietary requirements. However, this was not initially catered for. The waiter soon returned with appropriate alternatives and we all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. The staff were very accommodating and the food was fabulous. We will recommend this hotel to family and friends and will definitely return.

Amazing venue, building and food. Given the size of building can't believe one room cannot be made dog friendly for indoor dining. Seems at odds that dogs allowed in bedroom but not a bar area or specific room. Large parts of grounds seemed unkempt. Several fountains had either run dry or were blocked by green algi. One water feature is dedicated to the life of Princess Diana. We happened to visit on the anniversary of her death and the only reason it wasn't working was that the water level was too low and it was blocked up. The building is so well kept and the food was of such high quality that it is definitely worth a visit.

Service good as always, new booking arrangements work well with suitable text reminders. Food quality remains excellent but the restricted menu is disappointing and I fear that they (and other establishments) may be using the pandemic as an excuse to cut costs.

I took my husband for afternoon tea here for his birthday and thanks to the caring, attentive staff we were made to feel very special and valued. The food was delicious and so very fresh and the waiting staff made sure everything was perfect. Thank you so much and I can highly recommend a visit here.

Simply lovely cream afternoon tea with one gluten free that looked exactly the same as the ‘normal’ ones! So pretty. Unlimited pots of tea. Great setting and service. We booked in at 4pm and left at 7pm! Excellent value for money. Highly recommended.

Afternoon tea at the Petwood Hotel was really nice. The food was real good and plentiful. The staff were helpful and pleasant. The only thing not so good was getting Tea and coffee refills was slow but that is just a minor thing.

The food was excellent quality. The service was good. Very nice surroundings. Overall a very pleasant afternoon. My only small issue was that I did ask when booking that the coffee cake was changed for something else. That didn't happen. It really is only a very silly issue but I think it would be nice to have a choice of cakes. Apart from that it was really lovely.

Afternoon tea at the Petwood Hotel, a very pleasant experience, the service was excellent and the food was delicious. We had chosen the Gin and Tonic afternoon tea and it was good to try out a different kind of Gin from the selection they had.

We always eat at the Petwood as you are guaranteed an excellent meal, and this evening was no exception. We were also delighted to see several familiar faces of staff who had been employed before the pandemic were still working there, as the Petwood staff are what staying, and eating there is all about.

I would not normally write a negative review, however the Petwood sent me an email asking me to leave a review.I went with two other family members for afternoon tea on this occasion. I have frequented the Petwood on numerous occasions over the years and never really had cause to grumble. We were shown to our seat rather promptly upon arrival. 20 mins later no one had asked us what we would like or offer us refreshment. Staff walked by like we had borrowed Harry Potters invisibility cloak. It would have been polite to ask what we wanted to drink or at least acknowledge us and apologise if there was a delay.I called over a very pleasant young man and asked for tea while we waited. Tea arrived and as the young man turned to depart I enquired if he was taking our order. He did so and 30 minutes later our afternoon tea arrived more disappointing another table received theirs well before ourselves despite arriving long after us.The serving staff lack direction and co-ordination.The food however was lovely.

From arriving to our meal, everything was lovely in this wonderfully atmospheric hotel, with all its wartime RAF. associations. Food menu is fairly extensive but not too fussy. Food was delicious and served promply. All in all, a great evening out, just what we wanted.

We visited Petwood Hotel for last Sunday Lunch. The hotel is lovely but the service was very poor. We did not receive our starter until 50 minutes after sitting down! The food was very average for a 4 star restaurant (the turkey was very dry). When I complained the cashier knocked off some of the drinks and said they were having staffing problems in the kitchen. There was a long wait between courses. Not really good enough. Bill Brocklesby.

Currently staying for our wedding celebrations. The staff are working tremendously hard under difficult circumstances. The ladies at breakfast this morning had nothing but smiles whilst we could hear some people being quite rude to them. We do appreciate your hard work. Thank you

Looked forward to our afternoon tea but what a let down. On arrival had booked us into the restaurant despite us booking the terrace due to having the dog. Fortunately not busy outside so not an issue. Arrived at 1.30, Tea, coffee and a beer for hubby ordered and served 20 mins later minus milk. Waited for waitress to come back out with some but after waiting 10 mins had to go ask. When booking on website and ordering at the table, stated no fish in sandwiches, when food came out at 2.10pm had fish, waitress apologized and took back, correct order came out 10 mins later. By this time hot drinks had been well and truly drunk/gone cold. After that had no further service from any staff, can’t blame COVID as went to the toilet and saw 3 stood chatting and 1 stood a couple of tables away from us for 40 mins taking to her family and entertaining her grandson who were dining. Had no offer of hot drink refills and hubby couldn’t order another beer as seemingly no service outside. Food was okay, 4 finger sandwiches which amounted to 2 slices of bread. Cakes were nice enough, however on a plus the Pannacotta was to die for and the star of the show. Sorry but expected more for just short of £20pp, service shocking and food nothing to rave about and certainly not worth the cost.

The setting of the hotel is beautiful and the stories and nostalgia of the history is moving. The service of the staff and the willingness of the staff and historian to impart their knowledge of the stories surrounding the dam busters was intriguing. We enjoyed a very pleasant couple of hours having morning coffee and walking around the grounds.

Met up with friends , menu on offer very disappointing as no main meals . The paninis were very tasty I was told but I had fish cake which was just potato ,hardly any fish in it. The chips were not fresh and my friend had a duck pancake which was inedible. We did say at the time but got no money taken off the bill . I had been 2 months ago and had a total different experience as it was lovely and food delicious . Will be a while before I go again .

From the time of my arrival the whole experience was going wrong. The young lady that was checking our booking did not seem to know what she was doing. After some time when she had finished arguing with some of her colleagues, she showed me to an outside table, I advised her I had booked an inside table due to my disability, she informed she will see what she could do. She moved my party inside to an area near the bar, which was not suitable but is was the best she could do. We then sat at our table for at least 25 minutes and nobody approached our table. My wife had to go to the bar and get somebody to serve us. A lady came and took our order, she then plonked a whole load of tea pots, water pots, coffee pot etc onto to the table and left us alone, it looked as if we in a transport cafe. I asked for a cafeteria but got a pot of coffee. The door leading to the outside dining was open all the time, people coming backwards and forwards and it was cold, therefore our tea and coffee got cold awful quickly. We eventually got out afternoon tea, which was plonked in front of us, with all the pots still remaining on the table, then my wife had to ask a manager if we could have side plates, he apologised, left and went and got some plates. I was expecting a lot more from an establishment like this, there was no finesse, waitresses going backwards and forwards moaning about their workload etc. As a former Catering Officer in the Royal Air Force I was expecting much higher standards. As it was my birthday (Thanks for the card) I felt the cost (£74) did not warrant the visit, needless to say I would not return to the Petwood Hotel again or recommend to friends. My guests were looking forward to the day but were left cold and disappointed.

The setting for lunch was beautiful. You could not fault the garden setting in the beautiful sunshine although less wasps would have been greatly appreciated. The service was not to the same standard. We were left waiting for ten minutes by the waiting to be seated sign, not great when my husband was finding standing painful. The service was slow. The food was simplistic however very tasty. Despite the slow service, I would go back.

We had an absolutely fabulous experience at the Petwood. The hotel is an amazing looking building packed with history. The flowers in the beautifully kept grounds are gorgeous and full of life, the food was delicious and the service was first class. I'm building hours as a helicopter pilot so I was looking for somewhere pretty to take my wife and some friends which served afternoon tea and had space to park a helicopter. Whether you intend on coming by road or by air, you'll have a great time at the Petwood Hotel.

Not the old Petwood as we knew it. Very limited/poor menu. The staff were friendly enough but the welcome was missing, they did what they had to do but no more. There was just no atmosphere and we were disappointed with the experience. The food we chose was very ordinary and it lacked presentation. The chips had a fancy name but were just frozen chips!!

Tucked away between the large venue's across from happy days club but if you do spot it well worth a visit, next door to a chippy. Run by working class folk with a friendly attitude and friendly prices. Our favourite is the Sunday carvery with generous portions and to top it all comes with a pudding included in the price. A good extensive menu at affordable prices for families and couples. Large table's, good seating but what make ginghams our favourite is the helpful friendly staff and atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

Have had the set Sunday lunch on several occasions. Quality of the meal has been fairly consistent. Today however, the experience was overshadowed by some very nasty custard! It sounds very picky, when the rest of the meal was fine, but watery, lumpy, tasteless powdered custard with the crumble, took the edge right off...
