We went in to have dinner only to find they don’t do food. Waitress was helpful saying we could order a takeaway and eat in. Having 2 small kids, we decided to move on.

Dearie Me! How gorgeous is this wonderful establishment...? The new hosts owners have created a welcoming and quirky environment for any travelling visitor and present an eclectic range of beers and cider. The pub became busy soon after my arrival on opening time, and as the jukebox started to throng with classics, we spilled out to benches, the village square and picturesque ambiance. Stunning!

Its nice to see that new owners have taken over the Oak House very recently since the previous ones went bankrupt! However, its early days and they obviously need time to settle in and get the place up and running again. We went in for lunch and were made very welcome; the menu is quite limited at the present with only about 3 starters and 6 main courses (including burgers and pizza) but enough for us! We ordered ham, egg and chips, vegan curry and scampi and chips. The service was a bit slow but when the food arrived, the portions were good sized and well cooked. The ham was delicious! There was only a choice of 2 desserts - 3 scoops of ice cream or chocolate brownie and there was no coffee or tea as they were waiting for a coffee machine! The staff were very friendly and helpful and we hope to make another visit when the place is fully functioning.

Delicious Sunday Lunch and vegetarians and dairy free family members were catered for. It was good that the menu also offered alternatives to a Sunday Roast and the fish and chips looked tasty. The food was lovely and well presented and everyone enjoyed a delicious dessert too. The staff were friendly and helpful. Prices were average and the location is great, right in the centre of the vllage square with free parking. We'd definitely visit again.

Dinner was excellent and made even better by the wonderful reception and service we received from a super young lady and great food from her sister, the chef. Real quality in hospitality expertise. Sunday lunch here for a special occasion was rather underwhelming after having a lovely lunch here, albeit a few years ago. Very quiet restaurant, which was no fault of the restaurant probably just the current climate, but the food really wasn't that wonderful. We both had roast beef which, with no criticism of the chef, was as 'tough as old boots'. We felt that it was all very average, at best. They did, however, offer a complimentary pudding, which was a lovely touch. No wine list either!

Went for a Sunday lunch last weekend and all of our meals were lovely - best we have had for a long time. Costs a little bit more than some other pubs but the setting is really nice, with comfy seats in the bar area and a nice restaurant area to eat in. We all had Sunday roasts and a desert. All 3 types of roast were spot on with nice roast potatoes and a mix of veg. Cheese Board was excellent, as were the other 2 deserts we chose. It was quite quiet when we were there which I dont understand for somewhere that provides such a nice environment and good food.

As I go to write this review I notice I wrote one in 2014 when things were dreadful....and they haven't improved. I went here for tapas with my mum. What came to the table was inedible. Frozen tapas from Iceland would be better. Everything was deep fat fried and dripping in oil. The bread was hard and stale. The worst part was we told them politely it was inedible and they still charged us! For food we'd barely took two bites out of! I wont make the mistake of going back again. Such a shame as the pub itself looks nice and we love Axbridge.

We live just down the road from Axbridge and popped in for dinner as we had heard good things about this place. The first thing that is difficult is parking! There are restrictions everywhere for 24 hours a day as far as we could tell. Of course, that is not the fault of the restaurant but it does contribute to one's enjoyment of an evening.Anyway, the restaurant and bar area are very nicely decorated, warm and welcoming. we were greeted by a very pleasant young lady and had a drink at the bar first. very chatty and friendly woman behind the bar too.On being seated at the restaurant, we had a tasty amuse bouche and drinks (decent wine list). The menu is good. There were at least three things on there that I could have ordered on the spot! Traditional British style choices, very nice. However, I could not justify paying £30 for an 8oz fillet of beef with some sauce!!I had the pigeon starter, which was very nicely cooked, pink all the way through and tender as well (water bath, maybe?). However, when it arrived at the table it was all quite cold as if it had been sitting for a while before being brought out. My wife had the soup, which was home made and she said it was good.We both went for the pork belly main course, and both agreed that it was rather dry. There was nice crackling and all the potatoes and veg were nicely cooked, but the actual pork meat was not unctuous with reduced fat. All in all, good service, nice place but the kitchen was not on top form that night. We would give them another chance however, this meal was 'average', not 'poor'.

Arrived here wanting lunch and as it was a nice day decided to eat at an outside table. Service was initially fairly slow as there appeared to be only one member of staff serving at the bar, tables and taking orders. All four of us opted for the beer battered cod and triple cooked chips. A large piece of cod was served together with a decent portion of chips with a ramekin of buttered peas. The batter on the cod was the lightest I have ever had with no hint of greasiness. I usually have a few mouthfuls of batter before I find it too much and just eat the fish leaving the remaining batter but on this occasion I ate the lot. Without doubt the lightest batter I have ever had and the fish was cooked beautifully. Fish and chips done very well!

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday, somewhere new we hadn't been before. Really nice interior, very friendly staff and good atmosphere. Had local gin with tonic (amazing!) and cider, sat in the bar to order our food and to chill out before going into the restaurant, waitresses/waiters were very helpful. Once our food was ready they asked us to go into the dining room, which unfortunately was empty, but nicely laid out tables, they brought out a small starter, which we hadn't ordered, but advised that they did this for the diners in the restaurant, was a beautiful sweet potato soup with 2 warm rolls, yum! Then the mains, 2 fillet steaks with vegetables and hasselback potatoes, we couldn't stop saying to each other how amazing the food was, juicy and very tasty. Puddings were a downfall, nothing too exciting, but a nice flat white to finish off the evening. Bill was very £££ so definitely for special occasions only.

A pleasant pub / restaurant / hotel overlooking the attractive square, décor wise it’s quite contemporary and has presumably been extensively refurbished at some point. Although there’s still much exposed brick wall and beams on the ceiling, for the most part it had quite a modern feel to it, although there were nonetheless a few parts that looked a lot more original. Staff were pleasant and friendly and invited us to sit in the lounge whilst we perused the menu. There was both a bar menu and an a la carte, with the bar menu being restricted to about five options priced around £10 - £12, whilst the a la carte offered a similar number of dishes for a few pounds more. We both chose from the bar menu, and I opted for the chicken & bacon linguine in a thyme cream sauce with crunchy bread. This was a decent enough dish, although certainly not outstanding. I didn’t really notice the thyme, and it needed a bit of seasoning to liven it up. The “crunchy” bread was a plain white slice, tasting like it was out of a packet, and not really very crunchy either. It may perhaps have been in the toaster for a few seconds. Now, none of this was really a big deal – as I said, it was decent enough, and if I’d been paying seven or eight pounds, I’d have been perfectly happy. But for £10.95, I expected a bit more. Across the table, ale battered cod with triple cut chips was also decent enough, but it too felt over-priced. The fish was quite small, probably about half what you’d normally expect, but decent chunks of tender fish and a crispy batter. The chips weren’t nearly as crisp as I would have expected for ones that had been triple cooked though. Overall, this was a very nice setting with great staff, and the food was ok. For a few pounds less it would have been fine, but I guess you’re perhaps paying a premium for the surroundings and the fact that it’s a hotel. It also seemed that a lot of punters were there on some sort of deal – quite often I’ve noticed when that’s the case that prices are artificially inflated so they think they’re getting a bargain. Not saying that’s necessarily the case here, but it might explain why we thought it was a bit expensive for what we got.

The food was great, Mackrell starter was well thought out and flavours worked well together. The chicken main was cooked well and if I was really picky would of been better with a jus. We booked lunch here on a Travelzoo deal, and can thoroughly recommend this restaurant. Axbridge is a lovely village and the Oak House is situated on the market square, with free parking 100 metres away. As we walked through the front door we were greeted by a lovely young lady who looked genuinely pleased to see us. We were invited through to the lounge and offered drinks while we perused the menu. Once the starters were ready we were guided through to the dining area, with an invitation to enjoy our lunch extended by the landlord behind the bar. Our waitress brought a delicious soup and potted mackerel as our starters, and while we waited for the main courses we were able to admire the decor, reflecting care in restoring the old building tastefully and with obvious care in its maintenance. The chicken linguine and cod and chips were delicious and well presented: especially the chunky chips and succulent peas. The restaurant was quiet with only one other table booked, but despite that we had an extremely enjoyable evening. We went straight to our table due to one of our party having a sprained ankle and wanting to be seated immediately, but there looked to be a very pleasant bar area with welcoming chairs for pre-dinner drinks and time to review the menu. The food was of a very high quality, with the hake dish served with gnocchi and the mushroom wellington particular highlights. We visited this restauarant on a Tripadvisor 'tasting menu' deal. There had been a mix up with the booking (not I don't believe on our part) and some of the courses we ought to have had were therefore substituted. In the case of the soup it was very tasty, and the duck was nice enough, but on the whole the food was somewhat bland and needed a bit of seasoning to lift it a little. In particular a poached pear instead of panna cotta was extremely disappointing - a few spices I think would have made a big difference. It was nice, but I think we were all hoping for a bit more than just nice.

I have recently moved to the area and have been trying to find a new local and somewhere special to treat myself and the good lady to a little fine dining. Finding nice country pubs in Somerset offering good honest pub food made with locally sourced produce is not hard and could almost be taken for granted once you've lived here for a year or two. After doing my research the highly rated one Michelin star rated Pony and Trap seemed to be the only choice for a truly high end dining experience in our area. Without going into details and after paying them 75 pounds we never even got to step foot in this embarrassing excuse for a restaurant due to their appalling customer service and simply greedy company policies. On the off chance I agreed to meet an ex work colleague for a drink on the way home at the oak house in axbridge. I don't do reviews lightly so this one is not based on a one off experience but is based on 12 months of great service, and brilliant food that constantly raises the bar in terms of quality and execution. Charlie , Jason , and Norbs complete the experience by being professional , friendly , and genuinely invested in making your experience at the oak house not just one to remember but one you will want to share with your friends and family. If I had to say what makes the oak house stand out from the crowd it would be the consistency of good quality food , complemented by the professionalism, and welcoming feel that the manager Charles along with all the staff bring to the party.

A welcome change from the often mediocre selection of eateries, in an area where exceptional cuisine is rare and good restaurants are generally very thin on the ground. The Oak House is a very pleasant restaurant with a comfortable bar area, overlooking the medieval square in the charming and unspoiled country town of Axbridge, in rural Somerset.I would have liked to have given this establishment a 5 star rating but although the food was of a higher than average standard, for the region. The presentation and service lacked that little something, which lifts an establishment into the upper reaches of eateries, above the vast majority, which inhabit the middle echelons. It is close but not quite there. The prices of the food and wine are very reasonable and I look forward to my next visit.

We have been regular visitors to this fine establishment for a few years now and although it is fair to say we have had a few disappointing evenings whilst they struggled with staff changes etc. We have always had great faith that the quality would once again rise to the previous standards we have experienced and yes they have nailed!. Our last meal absolutely excelled in every aspect and the Oakhouse is back at the top of its game again!! Charles and his team were attentive but not invasive and the presentation and overall quality of the Chef's food was sublime, I could list all the dishes but as all four of us had individual three courses it would take far too long, needless to say ALL plates were superb! I am slightly biased though as I thought I had the winning pork plate with a fantastic black pudding mash!! I always feel that this marvelous place comes into its own in the winter with a warm cosy ambience throughout, I suggest a glass of wine in the Chesterfield sofas sat by the inglenook fireplace is a must. They will even provide you with marshmallows to toast!! Well done to everyone, you have won us over.......again!

Food available all day which was a bonus mid afternoon. Very nice 'pub' although more restaurant/hotel than pub the bar being a touch minimalistic although totally in keeping with what they do here.Lovely food, good service, friendly staff, thoroughly enjoyable.

The Oak House is the best pub in the Weston area! The team are so helpful and the food is fantastic.I had mackerel pâté and sea bass, and my wife had smoked pigeon and roast pork. The food was really great, reasonably priced and very well presented. My 3 year old was also very pleased with a huge pile of chips and fresh homemade chicken nuggets (£4.95! Bargain!). The beer was fresh and local, and they had a nice wine list. The finishing touch (after some cheeky desserts) was a (free) marshmallow cooked on the ancient open fire. This has never happened to me before in all my long legged life. My daughter also loved the fairy-lit well in the dining room(!)We will be coming back!

We stopped here for a 'quick' bite on a Saturday lunch-time, but after downing a pint over the first 40 minutes and still no sandwiches [cold not hot] I entered the bar to order another pint and ask if our order would take much longer and was told "everyone has ordered all at once"...weird, I thought that is what happens when you run a hotel and restaurant, customers at lunch-time order food!!! So after another 10 minutes the sandwiches arrive and despite my specific order of wanting no butter...my sandwich is buttered. Have difficult is it to spend my hard-earned money on a product and service as simple as a sandwich? Apparently it is in the Oakhouse.

We have been before and enjoyed good quality interesting food but tonight failed to live up to expectations. My sea bass was over cooked and the new potatoes barely warm. The peach for pudding was under ripe and little flavour. My son's potato fondant was dry and "underwhelming". The service was slow although the staff were very nice and did not charge for one main to compensate us but this did not take away the disappointment of a below par meal.

Booked here last minute and were offered a table without any hesitation. Staff looked smart and were attentive without being overbearing. Food was lovely. Not REALLY expensive either and therefore would recommend.

We looked at the menu outside and the food was a bit fancy for us. As we went to walk away, the bar manager came out and chatted with us and said to look at the Bar menu...... WOW! what great food served so beautifully and the service was great. We sat out in the town square and had a lovely time.

Stayed just one night with my son on a motorbike tour of the Mendips and the Cotswolds. Great setting on the corner of a partly medieval square. Very friendly with excellent food and service. The junior suite was fitted to a high standard and my son's room was also really nice. All in all a memorable stay and highly recommended.

Great food beautifully presented. Two visits two lovely meals. Pleasant relaxed setting if a bit of an echo. Only issues were a slightly longer gap between serving each course than preferred but quality of dos made the wait worthwhile - and it was a Monday evening! And of course the difficult Axbridge parking.

The dining room at the Oak Hotel is small but huge in interesting cuisine. The menu has lots to choose from and what we had was superb. We had 2 starters - the cured salmon and smoked pigeon breast. Both superb and presented well. Our mains were the sea bass and lamb; again perfection. Dessert was a chocolate fondant with stout ice cream, pistachio brittle and caramel sauce - Wow. The service was friendly and great. This restaurant is a gem!

A friendly greeting by the bar man, started a good Sunday lunch here. Very pleasant surroundings, good beer and efficient service. The mackerel pate was excellent, so much so that my 13 year old daughter, who was not having a starter, ordered one - this came very quickly. My wife had the soup, which she declared delicious and also expressed the same opinion of the hake for her main. My daughter and I had the roast sirloin of beef, which was nice, if a little overdone, as was the enormous Yorkshire pud.The veg and gravy were well cooked and very tasty.

Went with my husband and daughter, on more than one occasion to this little café A true Gem, staff are always very helpful and cheerful, The cakes are amazing, I have tried to resist but find them too tempting, and unlike some cakes that look lovely but taste is disappointing, these are gorgeous in looks and taste, last time myself and daughter tried the courgette and lime, while my husband had coffee and walnut, both were very tasty, along with an unusual but delicious Mumbai chai, highly recommended. All in all a very nice eating experience with the backdrop of surrounding woodland, and stream that runs past.

We don’t live far from BOS so decided to drive down for a couple of hours. It was a very cold day so decided just to have some lunch then head home :-))) We noticed this little cafe and decided to pop in, there was a table right next to the window/door so we went to the back of the restaurant for some warmth, sadly the staff kept leaving the door at the back open even when my husband kept going and closing it. But apart from that hiccup the food was very nice, and I would return but when the weathers warmer :-))))

Started well, went down hill not because of food but treatment by very aggressive, intimidating landlord ! We had booked, on entering pub went to bar to buy drinksWe were greeted by a very nice lady behind bar,she asked if we would mind eating in the adjacent room as they were busy. She said she would come and get our order for food and drinks. We walked through corridor full of junk and toilet rolls into other room. This room used to be a nice dining room but now houses tv inside fireplace, numerous notices on walls and a lift that looks like a shower in corner.I imagine this room was not normally used.We did not mind sitting in there, looking forward to food.Lady came and took our orders and brought drinks .We were quite happy and were bemused when landlord entered and seemed quite unhappy that he had to serve us. He demanded to know if we were really hungry and wanted starters ,saying aggressively, most people don't as they would not eat mains. We assured him that yes we did want them.He then said nastily that if that was the case it would take an hour and half for food.We said politely that we did not mind waiting. He then said condiments were in the bar. At this point we were sort of amused by him being so rude ,likening him to Basil Faulty. Absolutely bizarre ! Starters actually came in 30mins ,everything fine.He delivered food, ribeye steaks 20 mins later. All cooked to perfection ,one of our party asked where in the bar the condiments were He replied aggressively again,"they are in the bar where I told you 20 minutes ago !! .OBVIOUSLY it does not register with SOME people !!! " The lady came and asked us if everything was OK and asked if we wanted drinks. We said yes and even complimented her on how nice steaks were. We asked him shall we pay in bar and he said aggressively again "Yes and most NORMAL people order drinks at the bar "He then left the pub. This to me was the last straw ! Up till then we just laughed it off .We are NORMAL people who actually live just down the road ! We were asked to NOT order at the bar but what is his problem besides being a rude, nasty bully.None of this was an attempt at humour. I have NEVER encountered behavior like it,let alone by someone who is suppose to be serving you and taking nearly £90 of your money. I have been told since by locals that he is like this ! I feel sorry for the lovely lady working there. Needless to say we will not be back

Stylish, scrummy, lovely setting and staff excellent! We came as quite a large group and they weren't fazed by all our alternative drinks etc. and were fine to split the bill. A really lovely time for us all, thank you!
