Bucket list item checked! This middle aged Ian Fleming fan has, for years, dreamt of a visit to this legendary room. We were two couples taking our chances on an early autumn Friday night after dinner elsewhere. But the cocktail gods were smiling upon us as we waited no more than 15 minutes, during which Alessandro himself emerged to the Duke’s Hotel lobby to note our party and also tell staff he wasn’t taking any more names. The bar is quiet, no piano, no food served. However it’s great reputation as a “grail martini” destination, it’s a real bar that makes pretty much whatever you,d like short of Jell-O shots. My buddy was a fellow 007 fan so we went right to Vespers. His wife had a classic dry martini and my wife went light with pineapple juice, albeit as she later described, “ the freshest pineapple juice I’ve ever had!” Our martinis were concocted tableside by Claudio, a charming young man with five years under his belt at Duke’s. He explained each ingredient and indulged our questions and snapshots. The Vesper was delicious, more orange citrus forward than I would expect, but no matter. It’s a wonderful cocktail. To finish, we ordered one more martini, a wet martini to share among ourselves. Was perfect, not sweet yet smooth and not gin-heavy (IMO, there’s a reason why vermouth is part of the classic recipe; a super dry martini is too boozy for my taste). So dress well, don’t be loud - it’s not a pub - and savor the experience.

They don’t want black people visiting their establishment. Don’t waste your time. Rude staff and very unpleasant and unprofessional. We arrived at 10:10 pm and they told us they can’t serve us because it is after 10pm. No indication of this listed on their hours, it states that they close at 11pm. We then were yelled at for trying to get an Uber. The rude bar tender said get off your phone!! No phones allowed. No indication of this either. As a black American I don’t recommend this dump.

This is where James Bond was born. Absolutely worth the wait for the experience! Sophisticated and posh, we sat comfortably in our royal blue lounge chairs as our bartender took our orders and then wheeled out the bar cart with our requested ingredients. Our hefty martinis were explained and built to perfection in front of us. No shaking or stirring needed. The wife had the Vesper and I discovered my new favorite, the Dirty Vodka Martini made with Snow Queen Vodka(near impossible to find in the U.S.). Highly recommended if visiting London!

For 35L per person PLUS 12%VAT you get almost no food, no ambiance and a grudging refill on hot WATER. Four of us went to high tea for a long-wished for birthday celebration. For two hundred dollars. Two hundred dollars. We got pastries that teenagers would not eat, slices of sandwich best described as "mayonnaise four ways" and scones (which were very nice...I quite like scones). It was embarrassing to be taken advantage of. Dukes was recommended by our hotel concierge, and I did circle back with him to suggest he stop sending people there. Tea sandwiches can be heavenly -- and everyone loves a good, tiny dessert made with care. You'll have to find them somewhere else in London and share it on TripAdvisor. This is not the place.

I've been coming here for years - for the bar, the afternoon tea and latterly the restaurant and hotel itself. I've watched this place transform from effectively a quiet 2-room residents bar. I've not reviewed it before because I wanted it to stay that way. Then it started to make the Best Martini lists. A third room had to be added. Why am I reviewing it now? Because some of the criticisms are unfair. Yes it's pricey. It's practically in St James's Palace, for goodness sake. It's not Deptford. Anyone who earns their own money will realise that the cost of what is provided to you in a fancy place in a fancy neighbourhood of eyewatering lease costs, by experienced staff that are paid above the minimum wage, is not the same as the something you could pour yourself from a bottle on the side of the street. £20 a cocktail is the going rate in this neck of the woods and it's bad value if it's not good. Here, this is not the case. It is - for the most part - best in class. Just to reinforce my neutral credentials here, I will say that this place is best on short, strong drinks. I would totter around the corner for a mule, for example. I'm not a martini drinker myself, but the Sazeracs and Manhattans here are superlative. The staff are courteous, efficient and helpful. Due to its popularity you have to take a comfortable pew in reception till a table comes free. Only residents can book - a good reason, but far from being the only one, for becoming one.

We visited the Dukes bar after attending the Royal Garden party. Although the bar was full, the head waiter (older gentlemen who clearly was in control of the bar) accommodated us in the ward room until space was available. I could tell that this wasn't the normal process and was extremely happy that he was able to accommodate us. Not long after taking our order we were shown into the bar where we got to experience the legendary area based on James Bond and the Martini's he so loved.

Well whatever maybe the case, the bar is stuck in some old bygone era. They do not have any transparent system of booking. They proclaim that people will be seated on first come first served basis- which is sorry to say not the case. Who would be seated was solely being decided by the main bartender. Dukes Bar used to be the haunt for Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels. I don't know if Fleming drank martinis but we all know that James Bond did--shaken, not stirred. Well, the all Italian bar staff at Dukes know how to make an exceptional martini. They also make other great cocktails, like Manhattans, with great ingredients (first rate spirits) and generous pours. The bar is invariably lively with hotel guests and locals stopping by. In the courtyard of the Hotel, there is a cigar bar so one can enjoy one of the Bar's excellent drinks with a Cuban cigar.

I have been to Dukes over 25 times for pre-dinner martinis and it has always been a superb indulgence. My favourite bar in London, until last night. The service was unusually slow and when we asked for our 2nd martinis we were questioned in an uncomfortable manner about how many we had put back already. It was 6pm and nobody was even remotely over refreshed. Apparently they can only serve you 2 martinis, “we work closely in conjunction with the police” & “you aren’t aware how much frozen alcohol is going into your body” etc. For God’s sake, I am 52 years old, please do not lecture me on booze. Nanny state or Big Brother or whatever, the world is going mad. Perhaps this is the sad future but I thought Dukes would at least stand up and resist. Nope, the place that is famous for its legendary martinis now makes you feel very awkward when you drink one or more. Shambles and an absolute disgrace. Back to the Stafford then!

The Dukes its already and Institution, famous for his great martini cocktails, absolulty stunning but also for his great service. People like Domenico and took care of us since the first moment we stepped in. Great cigar collection and great atmosphere.

In days of old this was one of the most civilised and relaxing bars in London. Famous for being the home of Ian Fleming's favoured Martini. Hidden in a quiet corner of Mayfair and a real retreat. For it's history alone it retains a listing in the best places for Martinis in London but you earn your Vesper by being forced to wait in a cramped reception often for well over an hour. The bar retains it's club like atmosphere but is really a pantomime performance for hotel guests only. No reservations are allowed and non hotel residence are in fact rather unwelcome. Dukes could learn a good deal from the Carlyle in New York which still retains its old school values and welcomes those of another era with open arms and warm friendship. In the modern world unless you are staying at the hotel expect the cold shoulder or a very long wait. Dukes has truly turned its back on the old school - Fleming would not approve and would wisely adjourn to his Club!

Simplemente disfrutar. Mark R

Went for my birthday with my wife. Ignored initially and then provided with a dismissive answer as to when we would be seated. Sat in the “waiting area” for 30 mins and then asked for another update - the manager couldn’t be bothered to speak to me. Must agree with the most recent comments here. Terrible terrible service. Lots of better bars to go to in London. Don’t bother going.

We didn't really know anything about Duke's Bar, but a friend we were meeting who lives in London suggested it as we were staying at The Stafford just around the corner and knows my love of anything martini. We walked in and were sat in a smallish room and provided menus. A few minutes later a man/server (not sure really what to call him - he wasn't your run-of-the-mill bar waiter) came over to take our orders
