I visited Saint Martin-in-the-Fields during my stay in London in September 2024 and it was a truly fascinating experience. The church, located right next to Trafalgar Square, impresses with its stunning Georgian architecture and welcoming atmosphere. Inside, the simple elegance of the nave creates a sense of peace, while the decorated ceiling and majestic columns add a touch of solemnity. I also really enjoyed the crypt, which hosts an atmospheric café and often cultural events. A perfect place for a quiet break in the chaos of the city and a corner of London absolutely worth visiting!

Squidged into the northern corner of Trafalgar Square, with a compromised view of the magnificent frontage, and dominated by the bulk of the National Gallery. This is nonetheless one of the great renaissance churches of London. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend two concerts here, both were wonderful musical experiences - the Requiems by Fauré and Mozart. The Crypt is the setting for a decent cafe with a cloister vibe.

This is an Anglican church designed by James Gibbs in the Neoclassical architectural style, with construction beginning in 1721 and completion in 1726. Dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, a church has stood on this site since at least the medieval period. At the time, it served as a church for the rural areas outside the London city walls, but it has since become an important place of worship in central London. The church is distinguished by its domed spire and Corinthian columns, creating a striking exterior, while the interior is simple yet elegant. It is renowned for its chamber music performances and classical concerts, offering regular free lunchtime concerts and evening performances. In the crypt below, there is a café and gallery, making it a vibrant cultural and community hub.

Beautiful church - I came in last year with my Grandmother to see the church, and we had a coffee in the crypt which was a lovely atmosphere. We were hoping to see some famous epitaphs that were reportedly held at St Martins, and managed to find them stacked up in storage (after climbing over some boxes and stacked tables!). I then came again for the Christmas eve carol service 2024, which was an incredible experience and quite emotional. I’d hugely recommend this to anyone either living in London or visiting for Christmas!

Exquisite historic church, completed in 1726, replacing a Tudor church that previously stood on the same site. The design, by James Gibbs, has become one of London's most recognisable churches. It's well worth a look inside, where beautiful ceiling decorations, ornately detailed columns and galleries create an impression of space. The church's interior has a light, airy feel, and provides a place of calm to escape the crowds and bustle of the city streets. St Martin-in-the-Fields has a long history of helping in the fight against homelessness, and still holds regular services. The church is free to visit but donations are welcomed to support the upkeep of the building.

Beautiful spot. We came here before we went to a production at the Colosseum earlier this month. It is a great place to come for a good lunch or a coffee, but it can be really busy. I think it was especially busy due to it being over the Christmas period and also very close to the Christmas market and national portrait gallery. I’ve added a photo of the prices. The soup isn’t on the menu but they do have a daily soup which is £5 we had to wait for hours but it wasn’t too long. Unfortunately, they have stopped doing the jacket potatoes which is a real shame. The main meals are a tad expensive as you can see, but they do look good. Slightly tricky to get a seat and table, but we managed to get one. Staff are all very friendly, but they seem a bit low staffed and quite overwhelmed so I did feel a bit sorry for them.

We came for lunch. They advertised jacket potatoes but I found out they aren't doing them until the New Year. I decided on a pizza which is weirdly priced more expensively if you buy a whole one rather than 2 halves! I was given a buzzer and paid. I went back to our table and after a good 20 minutes I hadn't heard anything so went back to the counter to eventually be told my pizza had been given to someone else and that another one would be baked immediately. Afternoon another 10 or 15 minutes I went back to see if it was ready but it wasn't. The supervisor then refunded my payment and about 10 minutes later, more than 40 minutes after ordering, we got a very nice pizza. There were no trays either today but at least there was cutlery. Luckily we weren't in a hurry but other people were as they had tickets for the Van Gogh exhibition at the National Gallery.

They sold me restricted view seats for full price, there was a pillar right in front of me and had to stay turned on the right for the full performance without seeing the choir properly performing. I contacted them to request a partial ( not full) refund due to the circumstance but the box office manager Philip Payne refused on the ground that the pillar was marked with a circle on the map. I had never been to this church so I had no idea this was a pillar! When I purchase tickets for the theatre it’s always very clear where the view is restricted and you pay much less for these seats. will not go back not recommend. It was ok but nothing stunning as well.

The cafe at the Crypt was extremely busy when I and a friend visited on 22nd December about 3.30 pm and we had to share a table with two other people. That wasn’t a problem, the problem was that there were no trays to use, the attitude of several staff and one in particular. I was told by two members of staff that trays were at the beginning of the counter, when they were clearly not. Another said sorry but they were very busy and trays would be availabe “soon”. My friend is frail and so sat down while I tried to juggle getting two hot plates of food and drinks without a tray. The person in the queue next to me commented about how surly the server behind the counter was when I asked for pizza. I was so flustered that when I got to the cashier, with one plate of hot food, two mini bottles of wine and an alert buzzer for pizza, that I forgot to take my receipt after paying. The cashier knew I was having pizza but did not call me back to give me the receipt. When I deposited the one plate of food and wine with my friend, I returned to the counter to get glasses and when I got back to the table my friend showed me that one of the bottles of wine was a short measure, so I had to return to the counter to exchange it. The buzzer for the pizza went off and I went to collect it, but your surly member of staff refused to give it to me. I admit I then vented my frustration, pointing out to her that there - still - were no trays, that my plate of hot food was going cold, that the pizza was sitting there also going cold and did she not think she was being unreasonable? Her reply was that I was being aggressive and had been aggressive to other members of staff too. I had to return to the cashier to get the receipt and back again to the food counter to collect the pizza. Meanwhile, my plate of food was cooling and I had to leave half of the red cabbage as it went completely cold as I was eating it. The turkey pie was nice though!

Went for the so called Candlelight Baroque concert, what a disappointment and let down, there was no candles only a couple of small ones, the xmas garlands had no lights or baubles, there was nothing festive with no thoughts put into it. The evening was a treat for my friend and the experience left me very upset, I strongly believe that the marketing was misleading and so were the pictures, an expensive evening, acceptable if it was free entrance.Absolutely furious

Visited on Friday 29th. This used to be a great little café but on this occasion it was a very disappointing visit. Despite having china cups which were being used exclusively for coffee the cafe refused to provide china cups for tea and insisted on putting tea in a paper cup. This is a policy which is both anti-customer and anti-planet. For tea they use those trendy plastic teabags which give a slower and poorer quality brew than traditional paper tea bags. It is also anti planet. The hot drinks section staff were very slow and disorganised so, for example, queuing took longer than it ought to have done and my coffee went cold while I was waiting for oat milk The prices have gone up a lot since I was last here. I hope this is helping the Church but I consider this an expensive option now and there is much better value and quality to be had elsewhere. e.g. £20 for a pie and veg in a cafe is steep.
