Ordered a Stalla Artois tasted off, replaced by Camden, same flavour!! Ordered Scotch egg and black Stick with piccalilli. Sausage meat was tainted, the egg was perfectly cooked. The main course was sausage and bubble and squeak mash with parsnip crisps. Very sweet, the bubble and squeak had never seen a frying pan. (Just mash with petit pois and diced carrot) no cabbage. at all. 2 out of the 3 sausages had a tainted flavour ( on their way out) the one sausage that wasn't was excellent, the jus was nice albeit very sweet. A nice touch was a complimentary amuse bouche which was falafel with sweet red pepper. Very flavoursome although over fried.

We were a party of 6 and placed in a side room where we were obviously forgotten. Our meal once taken was over a hour before delivery. Sausages and onion mash - burnt sausages and no onion taste and a limp bit of spinach. Pudding was pear and ginger (where was this) served up in an enamel dish - crumble almost broke our teeth and it was luke warm. Altogether very disappointing and no apology even after emailing them.

Dean's Place was our first hospitality visit after the first lockdown and we decided a perfect close to home treat for 12th April. With an updated menu, blankets, hot water bottles and a warm welcome as always it was like we had never been away, especially when the chickens came over to see us. Asparagus Salad and a Chorizo Cassoulet for starters, Fish and Chips and a Sea Bream with Parsley Potatoes and Artichoke Puree, followed by Sticky Toffee Pud and a pint of Harveys. With garden furniture well spaced and all precautions in place, delicious food and brilliant service we couldn't recommend highly enough.

We booked for dinner at Dean's Place just a few hours before going so were really happy they could fit us in. It was a hot evening in August and the garden was looking beautiful. We asked to eat outside and were happy to wait in the bar for a table to become available. The menu was a bit limited but we both found something we liked and when the food arrived it was all very good. The staff were wonderful, always checking we had everything we needed and not forgetting about us. As it got darker they brought out candles for all the tables which created a lovely atmosphere and rugs too if you wanted them. I would definitely go back.

We went to the restaurant as non residents so cannot comment about the rooms or other hotel facilities. On arrival we had a drink at the bar and then went through to the dinning room which seemed to lack ambience and felt more like a big hall. Apart from a couple of local "specials" the menu was something you would see at a local "Harvester" type restaurant and not a four star hotel, eg a Cheesburger, Fish and Chips or Sausage and Mash for example. Tbe food was ok but service very slow and we had find a staff memberto take our orders. For a "Four star" hotel I would expect a better quality menu and service. A great shame.

I’m surprise this place wasn’t more busier when we came here a few days ago. Had a great dinner.. the whitebait was plump and delicious, probably the best I’d eaten as it had a fine batter. I had a lamb shank which was tender and a very large portion, ended up only eating half. (It could have done with more jus, but that’s just a personal preference) my partner ate the steak and said it was made perfectly. The staff were super friendly. We sat outside as it was still sunny and the grounds are really beautiful... my 3 yr old was able to run around (chasing the chicken in the garden!!) highly recommend!

Hotel that allows dogs in all bedrooms and restaurant and I was really shocked to be staying at this hotel as I am allergic to dig hairs and makes my asthma worse too . I’m sorry but even in the restaurant there are dogs and really can’t believe that if you are not a dog lover you have to stay at a hotel that only selects dogs in certain areas than the whole hotel . Hotel is very dated and worn in the hotel hallway and decor and furnishings . Avoid and stay anywhere else but here !! The dining room one depressing room and just wanted to go straight home after staying at this hotel. Very bad that in hotel description does not mention that dogs are allowed in all rooms and only mentions in the bar . Please be honest with people !

Decided to have a lunch at this hotel's restaurant as it looked good when we've passed and it read well on TA. We booked using TheFork TA site arrangement. When we arrived they didn't seem to have a record of the booking but accommodated us anyway. That was a bit lucky as it was an 'Eat out to Help out' day.The outside area is spacious and so we found a nice dappled shade position for lunch on this sunny day.The service was pretty good and the menu, although a little restricted, was fine for us. Our starters comprised a prawn & crayfish salad and a smoked salmon; the chosen mains were fish & chips and the fish of the day (sea bass with king prawn). We shared an Eton Mess dessert but found room for coffee & petit fours, all washed down with a very nice Marlborough sauvignon blanc. The bill was reduced by £20 for the August deal but the service charge was 12.5%. All in all this was a very nice garden lunch on a sunny summer day.

The restaurant is located inside a rather nice small country hotel. It has quite an upmarket vibe and décor. The staff are all from overseas and are courtesy and efficient, although there can be some slight language confusions with ordering etc. The food is OK but certainly nothing special to reflect the slightly high pricing. The wine list is quite good and not too excessive for an establishment of this style.Try to park in the small car park outside the main entrance as the large rear car park has some very large deep potholes that haven't been attended to for several years.

My wife and I booked a table for Sunday lunch last weekend. Our previous 2 recent experiences at this restaurant were first class and we felt that they had set the bar very high and that it could not be beaten. Wrong!! From the moment we entered and had esconced ourselves near the bar area we were subject to very close and personal attention from Daniel, assistant manager. He certainly makes the visit seem very special. Once again the food was nothing short of excellent. We had soup and chicken liver parfait as starters. Both were full of flavour. For the main course we had sirloin of beef and pork loin. They were both indescribably good. Even better than our last visit. Again, the best beef I have eaten in a restaurant and the roast pork was incredibly tender and very well cooked. The winning card - once again - was the staff team led by Daniel. He is to be congratulated on his close but not over-bearing attention to us. He is very friendly but remains professional. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for him. He is one of the reasons, along with the standard of food, that we have already booked again for next month. We have family visiting us from Vancouver and where else would we take them to show off a typical English village hotel and restaurant along with their well-trained, effective and thoroughly pleasant staff team?

We were staying at Deans Place for this weekend with our annual walking party, and we were fortunate enough to be dining in house on both Friday and Saturday night for dinner. As usual the level of service and excellent quality of food excels. It really does stand alone as a lot more than an "in hotel restaurant", a true top quality restaurant worthy of visiting and enjoying in to own right. We managed to sample most of the menu over the two nights between us, and even though the restaurant was busy on Saturday night we were delighted by the food & quality service. Two of us had the beef which was quite the tastiest and most tender piece of beef I have ever had. It was cooked to perfection, mine medium rare, and my friends medium. It was well worth the menu supplement. We have never had a bad dining experience in this fabulous restaurant, indeed, somehow it goes from strength to strength and excels itself each time we visit. Sincere thanks to the chef and his team, and as usual to Dom and his team for making a special meal a fine dining experience. We shall return as soon as we can, and look forward to our next visit. Best regards David & Jacqueline.

The menu in fixed price for 2 or 3 courses (inclusive of coffee and petit-fours) - with a supplement for one or two choices. The menu choices are very, very interesting, offering meals based on less usual ingredients - for example pigs cheek or pigeon breast as a starter, and guinea fowl as a main. Good venue, starter was good but main course (Roast Beef was not pink as described) served on an inappropriate plate which was more like a pot pouri dish. Cuttlery slid off the plates, created a mess on the table, saucer size dish of vegetables for three adults to share between them, had to ask for more gravy to use. Roast potatoes were poor, warm, stale and soapy. We advised of the inappropriate plates and was given a round of drinks on the house. Lemon meringue was awful, cloying taste, maybe one nugget of something calling itself a meringue. A dissapointing Mothers Day Lunch.

Why oh why is this restaurant so lacking?? I know, management. Who is the restaurant manager? We never saw them. Poor service from untrained waiting staff who looked terrified the whole time. This place is trying to be high end fine dining as they say on Masterchef- in fact dinner here felt like an episode of Masterchef. Ups, downs and balderdash! But missed fine dining by a mile. Bland, unexciting, poorly executed food served with no enthusiasm ( apart from Andrea and Amber who were charming) or any speed- it took 5 minutes between the first main course to come out and the last- meanwhile the first person's food went cold. I really don't know what else to add. Except, I would stay at the hotel again because it is a bit of old England, but I would eat somewhere else. I rarely write negative reviews so for me to say this, it must have been disappointing. During our evening in The Dining Room we were served beautifully presented, wonderful food.My father said it was the best meal he had ever had.Although perhaps lacking in flair, the top-notch cuisine dished out on the evening of our visit was certainly a tour de force by the chefs at Deans Place Hotel. The Dining Room was barely a quarter full. There was a good relaxed ambiance. The feel of exclusivity was heightened by having at least one unoccupied table between each table of diners. The background music was set at level that did not interfere with conversation; no-one sat round the table had to raise their voice to be heard or strain to listen. The staff were attentive aside from a single hiccup in service. At the end of the meal, after asking whether we would like to take coffee and tea in the bar area - to which we said yes - they then forgot to bring it and had to be reminded. Our experience was an excellent start to our stay in Alfriston. We would not hesitate to sit down to another meal in The Dining Room at Deans Place Hotel.

Found this restaurant in a search for a midway spot to meet some friends for lunch. What a good find! Just off the A27 so easy to get to it, some off road parking on site, staff who know how to treat customers, nice white linen table cloths and napkins. Good food, nicely presented and the bill did not break the bank. We will return!

The food was good & nicely presented, we all had good starters, mains & desserts which we enjoyed. It was let down by the waiting staff, who were not very attentive, so as such I could not rate it as anything other than average. Which is shame, because I would rate the food as very good, & it is a shame that the kitchen was let down by the front of house staff. They have a great selection of wines to accompany, but no offer of advise from waiting staff. We did however after getting their attention make a good choice of white to accompany our seafood starter & a great red to accompany our meat. The restaurant has 2 rosettes which the chef's probably deserve, but need to sharpen up everything to go with it. Had to ask what the rolls were, even though a basket was offered, and needed to ask for meat knives to cut the meat. Would I return? Only if Wingrove house is not able to accommodate!

While staying in Deans Place Hotel we took breakfast and dinner in Harcourt's restaurant. Breakfast was fine - a buffet with hot and cold dishes, and others available to order (strangely, there's no menu on the table to tell you about that). Dinner was fantastic - really good quality and well presented and so tasty. Apparently the restaurant has AA rosettes, which I can certainly understand. The waiters and waitresses are all friendly and helpful, although many don't have English as their first language and there were occasional minor difficulties with explaining requests. But overall, most definitely recommended.

3rd year running, food best this year, hot tasty and well cooked, staff not very knowledgableof food they were serving, but very friendly, senior staff excellent. Music too loud, although very good, it interfered badly with hearing aids and made conversation impossible, will ask to be seated at opposite end of room next year. Great value and very enjoyable.

Great lunch and staff very good. A bit slow serving drinks and could have done with more staff behind the bar considering number of persons at the meal, approx. 70Went to a bank lunch the following day for 119 people, equally as tasty but still not enough staff behind the bar. Drinks quite expensive but meal reasonably priced.

We dined here a few months ago and gave this restaurant full marks in our Trip Advisor review, so we were looking forward to a great evening when we returned last Saturday evening. We were surprised that for a Saturday night only 4 tables were occupied during the time we were there. Needless to say the atmosphere was zero. But it was the food that was the real shock, mediocre at best and appalling at worst. I had to send back my breast of pheasant, it was so dry it was inedible. None of the 3 courses my wife and I had showed any of the great flavours and attention to detail we experienced last time. They have a 2 AA rosette rating but on this occasion it was nowhere near. Will avoid in future.

We visited Deans for tea and scones. Lovely, quiet and relaxing location. Staff attentive and polite. The fruit scones were delicious with lots of clotted cream and jam. Tea arrived in a huge teapot with hot water too. Excellent value for money - being actually cheaper than some tea shops in the village! We would definitely visit again.

We came here for afternoon tea and were very impressed. The hotel is very quaint and the grounds are absolutely beautiful nestled in the village of Alfriston. The afternoon tea consisted of a hug pot of tea, finger sandwiches (cucumber, salmon, ham and egg) which were filling and tasty. The scone was homemade and came with plentiful supplies of clotted cream and jam. The cakes were; choux cream bun, lemon tart, traditional fruitcake and a chocolate covered strawberry. All were moist and delicate and very generous potions.

Me, my husband, my mother and my toddler visited Deans Place for afternoon tea/lunch today. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff who immediately offered us drinks. A particular staff member (Hilary) took the time to get cushions to put behind my baby in the highchair to ensure that he was comfortable. When the food arrived we were very impressed. The afternoon tea provided a selection of 6 finger sandwiches, a scone, fruit cake, a choux bun, a lemon tart and a chocolate covered strawberry. All of the cakes were beautifully soft and fresh. I also had the marinated tofu dish from the vegetarian menu which was delicious. The children's meal was fresh, homemade and of good quality. The chef also accommodated my toddlers request for cucumber and tomatoes. Overall a great experience and we will certainly return.

We have just returned from having afternoon tea on the terrace at Deans' Place Hotel, and have to say the whole experience - apart from the rather grim looking staff and bin accommodation on the way in - was super from start to finish.Lovely greeting from 'Front of House' team, served a delicious afternoon tea on the terrace overlooking the croquet lawn, no hurry, plenty of food and tea (more of both than we could finish) and all in all a lovely Sunday afternoon in great surroundings with attentive staff.A real winner - we will return.

wasn't overly impressed with the £150 a night room, we asked for a double room & we was given two single beds pushed together with the added bonus of stained sheets, we weren't informed about the moth mortuary in the bathroom either. Have to say though really beautiful surroundings the staff were extremely friendly & helpful....But wouldn't pay £150 again!!!

Took my wife and daughter to dinner here on a quiet midweek. Very comfortable lounge / bar area to relax and puruse the menu over a drink. Restaurant is spacious and comfortable. We all agreed the food was of a very high standard and mostly exceeded our expectations. Service was impeccable, formal yet relaxed and friendly. A pleasure to experience how it should be done. Not cheap, but if you want to go out for a special occasion and want food that is a cut above, this is well worth it. I will definitely use this restaurant again.

Lovely opulence at Harcourt's Restaurant in impressive Dean's Place Hotel where my wife and i had a lsmashing lunch as part of her 70th birthday celebration on May 1.Food was marvellous (a couple of prime steaks) but still not sure about having them served on these (apparently fashionable) "Boards". Can it be very hygienic ? Dessert was Bakewell tart and cream or custard - to die for, actually. So moist, so tasty - and served on an ordinary white plate/dish. Congrats Mr Chef and thanks for the "Happy Birthday" inscription on the dessert..Service by the lovely Spanish lady Raquel was absolutely superb. She added a lovely touch to our special day.I'm only sad to say that the restaurant was absolutely empty when we arrived for lunch at 1. 15 pm. I think these venues have gotr to look at their prices, if they want business to improve - although bar staff did tell us it HAD BEEN busy before we arrived.Hotel is a little gem in the charmingly quaint village of Alfriston near Eastbourne and well worth a visit but i think it is currently being saved economically by corporate bookings rather than individual ones. There's little doubt it is expensive - especially the wine. Great for a special occasion but on a more regular basis, I just couldn't afford it.

£12.50/pp for Afternoon Tea is a reasonable price, but after my second visit I won't be returning. While the scones are of good quality, and there is good selection of tea, the cake selection has been sliced straight from a supermarket loaf, and the sandwiches aren't interesting, nor of high quality, nor suitable quantity, and asking for a few more ham and salmon added £6.50 to our bill - for four sandwich fingers.I understand the need to keep costs under control, but £1.60 for a single sandwich finger seems excessive, no?Service is polite and courteous, plenty of car parking, but not worth the trip.

Awesome - to dish up nearly 100 dinners like we had last night. The starter and main course were to die for. I had never eaten beef in restaurant like it - it just fell apart in your month. The service was spot on as well, both bar and the waiting staff. I didn't eat my pudding as I was too busy selling raffle tickets but that looked amazing as well. Couldn't fault it.

I have eaten in this restaurant twice and each time left feeling they are getting better but not quite there... The food has been enjoyable in the main but not all served properly. I struggled to find fault with the two course Festive Menu lunch. The grilled fillet of salmon with parsley crushed potatoes, vermouth sauce and side vegetables were all delicious, freshly cooked and served on piping hot plates. Two of us chose the selection of British cheeses and asked to try all six between. These were, again, all very good including a delicious piece of Cornish Yarg.On the downside, none of our first three choices from the wine list were available - including both of the English whites. The waiter told us, on December 19th, that they "gettting these in for Christmas". Really?!! The restaurant was not especially full on a Thursday lunchtime and the rather stilted atmoshphere certainly did not benefit from a terrible CD of pop Christmas hits on repeat.Overall, though, great food and pretty good value.

Being a bit of a Sunday roast connoisseur I’d heard good things about this pubs Sunday roasts! Booked it up (recommended) and had the three meat roast! Way too much for me BUT oh my god was it delicious. The meat was melt in mouth, Roasted potatoes just right, all homemade and with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve had. The gravy stole the show, it was delicious and I’d love to know how they made it taste sooooo good! 10/10 (my first ever) I’ll be back for sure!
