Ended up having 2 delicious evening meals here instead of just the one we’d originally booked it was so good. Super friendly & welcoming from the moment we walked in the door. Very clean pub and certainly well maintained. Definitely worth a visit!

We were staying in the area so booked Sunday lunch. On a rainy and windy day the pub was so cosy with its 2 fires blazing. Received a very warm welcome from staff in this family run pub. We both had the roast beef which was delicious. It is cooked medium rare but you can ask for it to be cooked more if you prefer. The whole dinner was lovely. We enjoyed it so much we booked again for the following week. This time I had roast pork and my husband had roast chicken. Again both delicious. Seems very popular for Sunday lunch and so worth booking in advance. Will definitely return.

Staying locally we enjoyed a drink in the beer garden and started to read a few reviews, most seemed positive, so we decided to book in for a late Sunday lunch the following day. After a good walk we were welcomed with a friendly greeting, with the host remembering our booking and offering to show us to our table, given the great weather we decided to have a drink in the garden. When we settled inside the service was excellent and the Roast Lamb was equally good, I’m not normally a fan of Sunday pub lunches, however i would recommend the Devonshire Arms and would happily return.

Greeted by the owner after booking a table. So friendly and accommodating. We had the charcuterie sharing platter for starter which was wonderful and just the right amount. The main courses were disappointing. We had the the fish and chips and the lamb and couscous. The lamb lacked any flavour especially Moroccan flavours. Needed paprika, cumin etc but had none of these, the vegetables in the couscous needed roasting to bring out their flavours and the bread was not thin and crispy. Fish and chips were good value and had a crispy batter. Such a shame the flavours did not match the excellent service, some tweaks to the main meals would of made all the difference. However we felt comfortable and at home and enjoyed chilling with our drinks.

Having driven past the Devonshire several hundred times thus far, I won’t be making the same mistake again. It is a beautiful example of what a country inn needs to be: cosy without being claustrophobic, friendly but not overbearing, offering delicious food to suit all tastes at a reasonable price. All this and the best pint of Wainwright I’ve ever had.We called in because we couldn’t get in at a café further up the dale and we were curious as my great-great-grandmother had lived and worked here in her youth. We were warmly welcomed , found a table and were immediately impressed by the menu (quite literally - it’s lovely to look at). As befits the best of Yorkshire hospitality, the portions did not allow you to wish for more. My mother managed about half of her deliciously succulent gammon before conceding defeat, but was kindly offered to have it boxed up to take home.Sadly, we were too full to manage dessert, but will definitely be more prepared next time we visit (maybe fast for a couple of days beforehand), and we certainly will be back.Absolutely recommended.

We have just spent a couple of nights at this very friendly, welcoming country inn. Arriving on Sunday afternoon, we were shown to a lovely en suite room, with a huge, comfortable bed. There was tea, coffee, hot chocolate and delicious flap jack in the room, plus fresh milk in a nearby fridge. Breakfast was excellent, lovely local Cracoe sausages, a good start to the day, nothing was too much trouble, before we explored the local area. Lots of good information available in the hotel. Whilst hav ing a delicious dinner, a lone cyclist arrived, Chris was biking from the West to East coast, on a 300 mile sponsored ride in aid of Cancer Research. He was exhausted, his legs were gone and he still had to get to Masham!!!! Windy, heavy rain and winding, hilly roads to navigate, our hosts, Phil and his wife offered him free bed and breakfast for the night, to allow him to recover to finish the rest of his journey today, safely. How kind they were, Chris was very appreciative. Can't recommend this enough, we had a lovely relaxing couple of days. Thank you Phil.

Our first trip to Yorkshire and we found a gem of a place. We passed a couple of inns/pubs so by the time we spotted the Devonshire we were beyond hungry. When we arrived just before 6pm on a Friday there were plenty of tables which isn't always a good sign. Obviously the locals know service starts at 6pm and within 10 minutes there wasn't a table to be had. The menu is very good, everything is fresh. We have passed by on our trips to Yorkshire for many years and we finally made it through doors.. what a treat in an area of strong competition in the country inn market this is special. The decor is elegant and some simple touches add to the experience... but it’s the food with zero miles (meat comes from farm shop across the road) and a menu that gives all the favorites you would expect just to a 5⭐️plus level.. I had the seasonal pie which was chicken and leek for this evening but topped with a lid of The creamiest mash potato and served with perfectly cooked vegetables..no it wasn’t complicated.. but it was simply delicious. The whole evening was complemented by lovely service and brief chat with Phil whose philosophy for hospitality and good food is refreshing in a world of complicated mediocrity. Make the journey you will not be disappointed.

I agree with Kirsty in a previous review. This place makes you feel so unwelcome. We live further up the Dale from this establishment and are always looking for new places to eat. On two occasions now on a Monday night we have called in on our way home looking for a quick meal. Arriving around 7pm on both occasions and checking that they are serving food( despite saying on their website food served daily 6pm until 8.30pm ) we have been made to feel they would be doing us a favour providing us with a meal! On the first occasion after checking with the chef we were told “ok then if you order now” Today it was “well you can have food only if you eat in the restaurant.” We had no problems with that except when we were shown in to the restaurant it was so cold. No radiators on and no fire despite the rest of the bar area being very cosy with two roaring fires we were told they didn’t want us to eat in there as there was going to be a quiz at 8pm. In the end it was agreed we could eat in the bar where it was was warm as long as we left by 8pm. This wasn’t a problem as we had already ordered drinks and were quite honestly glad to be leaving this unwelcoming establishment for the last time. The young lady who served us was very nice and despite her instructions from elsewhere did apologise. Other staff including the man behind the bar just didn’t make us feel welcome. When we left at 7.55pm we paid the bill and not a single smile, thank you, did you enjoy your meal? Nothing from the guy who took payment. As I say we live in the Dale and see pubs open shut, change ownership so frequently it’s a hard business and we have seen far friendlier places struggle so why this atitiude to people I cannot understand. On a plus note the food wasn’t bad at all but we would not visit again.

Three choices are available for the Sunday roast. Pork loin £9.95, roast beef £10.95 and, pork and beef £12.95. We chose the mixed roast. The pork loin had a nice strip of crunchy crackling though I would have chosen pork shoulder given how difficult it is to avoid loin drying out. The beef was a large slice, well cooked but still moist and tender. Veggies included 2 delicious baked potatoes, a nice creamy potato mash, some cauliflower and broccoli and carrot. We especially loved the large, crispy Yorkshire pudding and the delicious, real gravy. The staff were extremely friendly and efficient and the low-beamed atmospheric pub was just the tonic for a drizzly Sunday afternoon. Oh, and the plunger coffee is inexpensive, fresh and a generous size.

I love this pub - great beers in top condition, lovely interior with a pleasant sunny garden area, with friendly and helpful service. We ate here for the first time today. We ordered a vegetable risotto and a vegetable Thai curry, both of which were labelled as vegetarian. I requested a small salad instead of the naan bread (naan bread with a Thai curry? Hmmm..) and that as no problem. When the food came, it was all very nicely cooked. But.....the risotto was swimming in cream and as I thought anyone who knew anything about Italian food should know, a risotto should not be made with cream. And, if it is, make sure it is mentioned on the menu! The Thai curry tasted very much as though it had been made with cream rather than coconut cream, which again, shouldn't happen. There was also a small amount of Thai curry paste that hadn't been fully amalgamated, and I'm 99% sure it included fish sauce as an ingredient, which means the dish should not have been labelled as suitable for vegetarians. I did give gentle feedback, so I hope this will have been taken into account. The reason I haven't marked them down, is that it is a super pub and I have heard nothing but good things about the food, so I hope this was just a blip.
