What a delightful place to stay at. We stayed for a couple of nights to visit the surrounding area and had the friendliest welcome and comfortable stay. James, the waiter in the evening, was a credit to them. He helped you choose what to eat and was attentive and friendly. The food was outstanding, especially the fish dishes. The breakfast was the best we have ever had and was cooked to order with local produce. Cannot wait to return.

Stayed for 2 nights. Had a lovely large room overlooking the village green with. Good, preordered and freshly cooked breakfast. Had dinner on second night - all good and looked after well by friendly staff and owners. Weather good enough to have tea in the garden at the back where there is also a nice outdoor courtyard.

We stayed as a family of 3 in room 6, with the four poster bed and the roll top bath which we enjoyed using after 2 busy days of sightseeing locally. I really can't remember when I last slept so well. The food from the restaurant was delicious, we ate there both nights and enjoyed both the menu, puddings and the specials. Both mornings the chefs were kind enough to make our son pancakes as he doesn't eat full English breakfasts - this was so kind of them and he really enjoyed them rating them top joint with his granny's! Also we loved the homemade croissants. The staff were so lovely even when dealing with one of the most obnoxious and aggressive customers I have ever witnessed in my life after breakfast yesterday. Well done. Thank you so much for a memorable and very comfortable stay. I will have to find a way to get a bath like that in my house!

First class food first class service. What more do you want. It's lovely to experience cuisine like this. It's rare to find fine dining that's is proud to use local produce (meat, fish and veg) the menu is quite small but that just means the chefs can focus on producing beautiful dishes. I thought the prices were affordable mains were around 20-23 pounds. The food was delicious, cooked to perfection, served on a hot plate, everything was so tasty we cleared our plates. You could taste the quality of the ingredients. I can't rate this establishment high enough. I've eaten in many eateries across UK and EU and it's up there. I try to give an honest review and this is my experience. The wine was really good quality to and I thought reasonably priced 7.60 chardonnay 175ml. The restaurant was packed at 7pm as dining stops at 8.30pm on the Saturday we were there. The portions for us any way are the right size as it allows you to have a starter, a main meal plus a pudding without feeling so full you never want to eat again. My husband and I loved our meals this evening. We chose Venison and fillet of Sea bass all from local suppliers. The food melted in the mouth. We enjoyed ourselves so much we are coming back in Dec. We live about an hour away but it's well worth the trip up or even a stop over. We didn't stay in the hotel guest rooms but thought I'd mention this in case you were looking for accommodation. Highly recommend. P.S sorry the only pic I have is empty plates.

Wow what a gem of a pub nestled in a quiet village location, plenty of parking around the green. The menu is incredible and the quality of the food is outstanding. The staff are attentive and polite and the owners are friendly and welcoming. The garden at the rear is a delight and perfect for sunny day drinks and dining, the front of the Devonshire arms has a beautiful seating area overlooking the village green and church. We shall definitely return this is our new favourite pub in Somerset.

Three of us for beers and dinner the night before the 2024 SW Peninsula Rally. Two of us drank the Rare Breed and the third Gem ale, all very enjoyable. I had the Curry Cauliflower soup, one of the others the Baba Ganoush, for mains two had the fish and chips from the daily specials board and one The ‘Devonshire’ burger. The fish had the best batter I can remember, ever, nice chunky chips, absolutely first class. All meals served promptly, very attentive servers. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED.

We stayed at the Devonshire Arms again last week for a couple of nights after a break of a short time. As ever the staff were wonderful. Over the last few years we have stayed there often, every couple of weeks in fact. The one major change to this lovely hotel was the menu. The new chef has changed it for the better whilst keeping the ‘old favourites’. It’s fantastic. Exciting new offerings and first class cooking. We dined with guests and family who were also blown away by the food. We can’t wait to go back…….and it’s reasonably priced.

All were perfect…No.9 on ground floor for Mum, No. 1 has an amazing bathroom and No.2 is stunning with a lovely couch for relaxing and looking out to the front green. The staff have obviously been trained to high standards by the owner Phil. All of the girls were lovely and very polite and the chef is just what we need in our local, amazing food! Has something changed? It was a busy night but the staff (of which there were many) seemed distracted/disinterested in serving - a lot of huddles going on. The were not rude, but certainly not happy. The menu is quite limited - very meat orientated - only one vegetarian option and that was vegan Altogether rather disappointing

We visited as a group of 4 to celebrate a birthday, personally I had no starter because the menu had nothing that appealed to me but the other members of our party had the smoked salmon and they all enjoyed it for a main I had the most expensive item on the menu which was the rib eye and I have to say I expect the burger would of been better value the steak was over cooked and flavourless a really poor lump of meat wirh over cooked chips but with that said all the others in our party enjoyed the hake which was very small but tasty so perhaps I just chose poorly but this won't stop is from visiting again as the venue its self is very comfortable and welcoming just not great for good food this is my 7th visit over years and I think 3 owners so have seen alot of changes and have to say its fairly easy to get a table now opposed to past years. My partner and I visited for our Easter Sunday roast, both ordering the roast beef at £20 a person. When it arrived, we were both surprised with how the beef appeared to have been slopped onto the plate. It wasn’t sliced or nicely presented, it was in a heap. We carried on regardless but mine was awful. It was fatty, chewy and rare. Some people might like this but I certainly don’t. I was watching other plates come out with nice slices of beef but mine was obviously the scraps. When the waitress collected our plates, I said the beef wasn’t any good and the fact that it was so rare. Her reply was ‘we cook it rare’ - well it would be helpful to know that upfront. She continued to say that I should have said at the time of receiving the meal and they could have cooked it longer but a) I didn’t realise quite how rare it was until I started eating and b) if it had gone back then my partner would be eating alone. There was no apology about the quality of the meat, and I was left feeling ripped off. £20 for a roast and you expect something of good quality. No reduction in price was offered, which to me shows a complete lack of customer respect. On a positive, the prawn and salmon starter was nice! I won’t be eating here again, and won’t be recommending the place, especially as there are many other places in the area.

Whenever I drive some 560 miles from the Highlands of Scotland to visit family, relatives and friends, I make a point of visiting typical English country pubs. Strange as it may seem, there's no exact equivalent in Scotland. Based in Curry Rivel, a few weeks ago I was invited to Sunday Lunch at the Devonshire Arms, Long Sutton, Langport. This most attractive establishment has a bar, restaurant and bespoke 9-bedroom accommodation. It was my first time there. I was mightily impressed for a number of reasons. Owned by Philip Capon, the building is a Grade II former hunting lodge, set adjacent to the picturesque village green of Long Sutton in the heart of the Somerset Levels close to the A303 near Somerton. It's just under two hours from London by car or train. One might be forgiven for querying why the pub's not called the Somerset Arms. Well, I've learned the Devonshire Arms, constructed in the 17th century, came under the ownership of the 4th Duke of Devonshire in 1753 as part of the Bolton Abbey Estate. However it was the 5th Duke, who sealed its place in history. The Duke realising the importance of visitors to the area, established miles of footpaths in the locality. The façade and exterior stone walls retain much of their original features and character. Once inside though, one's met with a surprisingly chic, contemporary style. Quality exudes from every nook and cranny. As with any organisation, it's the people who work there that make things happen. The service was seamless, second to none. No service with a snarl here. On the contrary, unobtrusive efficiency, high degrees of professionalism, unflustered at the busiest of times were the hallmarks. We were served by Julia, Scalette, Maya, Rae, Ashley and Frankie. Without exception, they anticipated our needs, almost before we realised them ourselves. Nothing was too much trouble. We were not rushed. Properly trained, they clearly enjoyed their work. I had no idea whether they were students or part-/full-timers, the standards were the same. The seating arrangements were both comfortable and spacious. A most pleasant ambience. No noisy musak preventing conversation. There's a large walled garden and sheltered courtyard for wining and dining outdoors. Incidentally, in Italy 'al fresco' means 'in prison' (cool places). "Vorrei mangiare fuori", will avoid the waiter's laughter. The quality of cuisine was first class. Ample portions even for the heartiest of appetites. The menu was wide ranging, catering for myriad tastes and nutritional requirements...locally sourced ingredients. The bar was well stocked with an excellent choice of wines, spirits, beers, ales, soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages. Catering is an art. All the more so in a hospitality industry with some 400,000 vacancies. Staff retention is key. The Devonshire Arms scores highly in this regard. The perfect destination for a day out from London. Dog friendly. Good value. Highly recommended.

We have been there twice now as the food is nice but both times the service has been pretty bad. 1st time they took our order but forgot about us and took about 40 mins to get our roast but they did actually knock money off the bill as an apology. Went back again today and again really slow service, took 1 and half hours to have just 1 course for 4 of us. Had to ask the waitress to take our pudding order who treated it as the most odd request ever!! Also had to ask for more drinks. Just not attentive enough staff. It’s a shame as the pub and food is nice but based on both experiences wouldn’t go back again.

My husband and I visited for Sunday lunch and were shown to our table promptly. We had to ask for drinks as no one came to our table nor were we offered a drink at the bar. Our food arrived, I had the lamb which was absolutely delicious, my husband ordered beef, which sadly was not so good. It was on the chewy side and looked like the end bits, with quite a lot of fat - for £17 we expected better. I did advise my husband to say something but he didn't and finished the plate. We ordered desserts which arrived in good time and were huge (which is absolutely fine by me!), I had a dessert wine to go with it which was fantastic. We would definitely return but felt a little shortchanged on this occasion.

Highly recommend to anyone looking for the best! Not to mention the wonderful interior design - fabulous interior design which adds to the experience. Attentive waiters/waitresses - we had a wonderful girl on her second day (Amy?) who was a treasure and so lovely. We were a little unsure about booking a night here after reading some of the mixed reviews, but as our first choice was fully booked we decided to go for it. We had asked for one of the rooms in the courtyard, (being one of the cheapest options) but we were offered a room in the main hotel, for the same price. The room was beautiful, at the front of the building so over looked the small green. There was plenty of space, lovely bathroom, king size bed and very very clean. The only fault with the room was the wardrobe door which didn't close properly but for one night I could live with that, and for more than a nights stay was a little on the small side.(There were no drawers in the room either). There is no doubt that The Devonshire Arms has been beautifully refurbished, but there was something lacking in atmosphere. Whether more back ground music would have made a difference I don't know. The bar area wasn't quite right too, it seemed to want to be part of the restaurant but wasn't quite! The food was excellent and service was good, and although it seemed very quiet when we first when down for a drink it soon filled up. Service was very good too. I think with a few more tweaks I would have scored a 5. So would we go back? For a nights stay yes, and locally to visit as a restaurant it's worth a trip.

Don't get me wrong here; this is a great place to go out and eat. The food is good and the service excellent; however, the menu has been the same for such a long time such that, if you want to go somewhere local to this area, you are limited if your taste is..somewhat 'particular'.....yes, you know what I mean! If there are criticisms, they would only be one, more of a varied menu. Every quarter would be sufficient and again, don't always offer the 'veggy' of the family, 'Goats Cheese thingymebob', they really would like a little more choice. That being said, great place to eat and entertain.

Considering I used to live so close to this pub I had never visited until around christmas time when I returned to the area to take my parents out. Mums friend had recommended it and we are very glad we went! The rustic exterior is perfectly blended and fitting for its surroundings, the interior is classy and suave. The meal here was to absolute perfection, waiting staff were focused and polite. Many compliments to chef as the restaurant was heaving yet, as I waited everyone seemed to receive their meals in good time and the atmosphere was unmatched. Hoping to come again in mid July for my fiance's birthday and this time see omen of the rooms.

We've eaten here on 7 occasions since Christmas and every time I'm amazed at how consistently good the food is and how much of an enjoyable relaxing time we always have. We've only ever had lunch here and are always accompanied by children, who are accommodated without the slightest bit of fuss - there's plenty of space in the restaurant so you don't feel crammed in and they have high chairs for little ones. The dining room is airy and elegant, the menu is varied (and changes frequently) and the ingredients are all carefully locally sourced and cooked superbly well. The waiting staff are charming and although I would agree with a previous reviewer that coffees/puddings can sometimes be slow to arrive, we're generally quite happy to linger and enjoy conversation in lovely surroundings. I really can't fault it at all, and I'm generally quite hard to please!

We have been to the Devonshire quite a few times over the years. The food is always consistently good and the staff and owners are delightful! Service can be a little slow - food comes in good time, but if you want extras at your table e.g. drinks, coffee - these can take a little time when they are busy. Probably could do with more staff, but more staff means more expense so you just have to be chilled out and enjoy the calm energy and wonderful food!

The Devonshire Arms may give you the impression of an average country pub but once inside, its classy, yet laid back interior would not be out of place in the heart of Chelsea. Excellent locally and responsibly sourced foods, I had the pollack which is just as tasty as cod. Expect to pay around £60 for soft drinks, mains, desserts and coffees for two (including service which they don’t automatically charge). The apple tart is a little pricey at £8.50 but it is made to order (you are warned it will take 20 minutes) and it is quite delicious!

The setting is quite beautiful with trees illuminated for Christmas on the village green outside the front door and the building is impressive. The food was absolutely superb. The only reason that I have not given the place full marks is that the service was a little slow but the place was busy so I suppose that is understandable.Overall, a wonderful evening!

The Devonshire Arms is on the square of an attractive village in Somerset. For us it was a convenient stop off point en route to Cornwall. It is good value, the rooms are large, clean and comfortable and the food both at dinner and breakfast was very good.

The chip shop has been closed for a while due to staff going on holiday. Last night we very much enjoyed our chips, chicken and curry sauce.

Simply the best Fish and Chip shop around. You can get most of the menu as a gluten free option too. The staff are fantastic too. Thank you everyone for your wonderful service 😍

Booked for dinner but on arrival, they thought we had booked for buffet, fortunately they had a table for us within a short time so we had a pre-dinner drink in the bar, which is fabulous and then went for a lovely meal in the Bistro, it is a small and intimate restaurant and quite modern and food is served on hot rocks, which you cook yourself to your own taste. Nice concept and food was really lovely BUT find that it gets pretty smoky when it is very busy. This is not a unique concept to us and it was a very nice change. Service was attentive and good and wine selection is great. Little pub at the Langport Arms is friendly and wonderful for pre or post drinks too.

Holm comes highly recommended for its food. I would not demur but was surprised at, and not necessarily enamoured of, some of its "idiosynchracies." Our reservation was for two. On arrival we were shown to our table where menus had been placed next to the cutlery and napkins. Having studied the menu we realised that it was the chefs taster menu - approximately 8 courses for a fixed price of £69.00 per person. I am not quibbling about the price but about the fact that when we asked for an a la carte menu we were met with surprise and received the distinct impression that it wasn't favoured or expected. We hadn't requested the chefs menu when booking. Equally, neither the a la carte or chefs menu indicated gluten free or vegetarian options. Surprising as today every restaurant seems to include that information and surprising too given Holm's reputation for food. I had also indicated when booking that gluten free options would be helpful. I was helped in my choice of food ( gf because of coeliac disease) but it seems a strange oversight especially in a geographic area where there are many other very well reviewed restaurants which do provide this information. Surprising too were the deliberations required to accomodate a request that a "starter" become a main course. All dealt with eventually but seemingly not part of the plan as far as the restaurant was concerned. I am obviously a restaurant dinosaur. I like restaurants where the menu is the starting point for a discussion about the food and accomodations (within reason) are suggested and offered. Holm I feel is London performative and this approach is not in its DNA. Having said all this I will say that the food we ate was delicious. I live locally and have found that some of my remarks have resonated with my neighbours. Perhaps we are just not sophisticated enough.
