Booked for May 2020 through Booking.com, no payment was to be taken until at the hotel but they took the full amount from my card. I called the hotel about this and they agreed that this shouldn't have happened and apologised. Hotel then cancelled due to Covid-19 which was fine but after 3 phone calls to the Owner/Manager who was very disrespectful I was told that I would be refunded in July as he was doing it in booking order. It is now a exactly a full year after the booking (8th May) and they will still not refund me.

Budget breakfast but good value basic cooking. Good service, friendly staff who seem to be observing covid regs. We were just in the bar area which is typical pub Okay for a budget start to the day. What impressed me most was the friendly staff.

I eat there quite regularly & can vouch for the excellent range of meals offered. It's down to earth honest pub food and I've never been disappointed. They are currently offering 2 meals for £9.00 with a smaller number of choices, but still cover the range of meals anyone would expect at a pub. No matter what you choose to eat, the quality & quantity are superb. Service is friendly and the bar staff will always help out with any queries. Not only do I go there with friends often, but am part of a group of about 30 men who meet up there on a regular basis. The service is excellent & we don't quite know how they do it as we can choose a starter, main & desert from an offering of 3 meals in each category. Well worth a visit,, maybe a few friends, or, and you must book for this, a large party to sample good, honest pub food.

We visited The Crown Pub one evening for drinks and a game of pool. Service was poor, the barman was busy chatting to a local, the only other person in the bar. Beer was OK, and the pool table worked. It has a small garden to the rear. No ambiance at all. Pictures on the wall had music connotations. Not recommended

Just been to the Alton Teddy Bear Festival and this pub was across the road. Popped in, very old decor, clean and friendly Basic menu ordered two jacket potatoes, they came out in good time and were really tasty. Good value, good value. A rough diamond.

First time we have eaten here. Both of us had roast beef. Didn't have to wait long. Served by friendly staff. Nicely presented, good portions, we each had the extra cauliflower cheese, had we known how large a serving was we would have shared. Our only criticism was the carrots were nearly raw. Brilliant value for money, we plan on returning.

We were pleased to see a vegetarian pie on the menu but my husband was served a meat one instead. He was told I had ordered it, which is incorrect. He ate the pastry and vegetables. There was very little available gluten free, but I had a reasonably priced though limited English breakfast. We felt they were not interested in their customers. How hard is it to keep some gluten free bread in the freezer?

Whilst on a visit to Alton planning for an event we're holding, we decided lunch and a drink were needed. The Crown was just a few steps away so we went in. The bar area is a little dark but had lovely beams and tables. We were greeting by friendly and helpful staff who directed us to the garden. A round of 4 x soft drinks came to £9. We ordered lunch. I ordered Cajun chicken and bacon baguette for £5. I only expected a few chips but was greeted with a 3rd of a plate of chips, baguette and salad. They even had salad cream! 😁 The food was very nice and I felt I got more than my money's worth. I would definitely visit again.

Called in with the intention of having a meal but the place was empty, dark and weary, the cost of drinks was absolutely outrageous and was obvious why there was no clientele, although the bar staff was ok we didn't feel welcome and left to eat elsewhere.

I just called in for a pint of Doom Bar as I like it and know they keep it. There was a group of four men, probably railway workers, at the bar having a friendly chat, but enhancing most of their sentences with the F word, so not really welcoming to strangers. Nobody was serving behind the bar, and after a few minutes I was just about to leave and go elsewhere when a girl appeared from a room at the back and asked if anyone needed serving. So, I got my pint, drank it and left. Enjoyed the beer, but not the atmosphere. Must do better.

Popped in for late lunch with husband and two friends after a visit to Weald Open Air museum. Food was nothing special - very basic pub fare but nicely presented. The bar is clean and nicely decorated and the guy who served us was friendly and polite.

nearly empty bar(usually says a lot about the establishment!!) staff don't know what customer service is and obviously don't listen to what you are ordering. wrong drink served and short measure till we pulled the barman up. TIP--QUESTION THE MENU DESCRIPTION.things on the menu are not what they seem!! we ordered food as described for starters, one item was covered in cheese, which wasn't stated on the menu, we mentioned this and the guy walked away disinterested, saying it was on the menu!!!! the mains arrived, I've never seen a traditional ploughmans with finely grated cheese and a bagette cut in half with dryed up lettuce and 2 pickled onions. Do yourself a big favour and give this place a miss until they improve. To cap it all they overcharged me by £2.00, it seems their till is dodgy as we worked the bill out item for item (all food dishes displayed like a till roll and totalled) and the girl behind the bar did the same and the totals were £2.00 different???? she was insistent the till was correct!!

Popped in for lunch with boyfriend & son & ordered food at the bar. No complaints thus far. However when our food came out it was completely disappointing, it was like a terrible B version of what we had ordered.

Having completed an evening Guided Heritage Walk around Alton (which in itself was excellent and very informative) we finished the Walk at The Cairn so we went into The Crown Alton for a meal. Well what a very pleasant surprise. The food was really tasty very reasonably priced and Doombar Real Ale to wash it down - a lovely evening with good local atmosphere.

We came down to Alton for a wedding, on the eve of the wedding about 30 of us rocked up. We were very surprised that they could cope with a crowd of this size!!! But they did, yes it was a little chaotic with some folk getting the meal intended for someone else, they should've owned up, the food was good honest fare, hot and nutritious and the beer went down well. We all had a great time with plenty of banter with the staff at a very busy time for them and they coped admirably.

We had nachos & a club sandwich, both were OK .It's about 500 years old & apparently because of heritage rules,it more or less has to stay in its present state..If you do go,be aware that what appears to be a step,is not..two of us nearly tripped up..

This is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The room stank of something dead, or wet carpet or god knows what. There was about 20 sheets of bog roll left and no spare. You couldn't swing a cat in the double room. The bar is totally dead and it's difficult to lift your glass as it stuck to the dirty table. Thank god I didn't try the food. Not cheap either..£60 for staying in a cesspit...what a ripoff.

We called in here for a quick meal,20 of us attending a wedding. The food we had was just basic , nothing fancy,it was cooked well and there was plenty of it.It did take a while for it to arrive, but this was expected. seeing as how we had arrived en masse.Prices were average, the place suited our needs,so all was well.

Called in the hotel for a drink at lunch time. Staff appeared totally unresponsive and appeared not to be overly bothered about customers. Scruffy place and staff. There were very few people in the bar area. The place was a mess. Ordered a pint of beer and a pint of larger shandy. The shandy was a total joke, over ¾ pint of lemonade and a tiny bit of larger. The most expensive lemonade we have ever bought. The beer tasted odd but said nothing. We sat in the rear yard/patio area. It was not very pleasant as a member of staff was fiddling around with the bins. The kitchen windows (that look on to the yard) were open and staff appeared to be more interested in who was sat outside. There was clearly no mess over the windows into the kitchen and a painter had his brushes on the inside of the window sill of the kitchen. Will definitely never go back there.

Hotel was dirty. Windows did not open or shut properly. Woken in the morning by guests outside the window in their pjs smoking. Not worth £70 charged for b&b.; Food was below average. The staff were too busy playing fruit machines to acknowledge we were waiting to check in. Then tried to over charge us.

Popped in here for more of a quick bite to eat about 5ish. Had the ploughmans baguette and chips. Being a ploughmans I had expected a fair portion of cheese. This came grated very thinly on top of the open baguette. Can't fault portion size of chips.

Although it isn't anything special to look at from the outside, this pub serves lovely food, both from their menu and the specials board. The main courses that we tasted were delicious with good sized portions and there were always plenty of vegetables to accompany them, it is all home cooked. All the meals were very reasonably priced. Although local B&Bs; etc may not mention this pub when recommending places to eat, we chanced upon it on a stay in Alton and were impressed enough with the food to go back 2 days later.

Revolting food we gad to wait 45 minutes for. Order was wrong, was sent back to the kitchen with a backdrop of loud swearing from the ‘’chef’’ for his mistake. Waited for another 15 mins for an undercooked jacket potato, no apology no nothing. Once ready ‘chef’ loudly announced here is a jacket potato with no butter in a mocking voice… on leaving I was clearly charged for 2 jacket potatoes and the burnt panini but felt the lady behind the counter who did the maths in her head, was too passive aggressive for me to challenge. Safe to say we wont be going back.
