The Crown Inn Pub in Swindon

Visited for lunch with a friend, we both chose the southern fried chicken wrap with coleslaw and chips from the two for £18 menu. We asked if we could have salad instead of chips, at no time we were told this would be extra! The wrap was lovely, the salad consisted of a small amount of lettuce, one slice of cucumber one baby tomato a couple of slices of onion and a few sweetcorn kernels. When we came to pay we were charged an extra 75p for this salad! We were told more expensive than chips! I just assumed they would replace the chips with salad didnt expect to pay extra! But the wrap etc was lovely, just as shame about this extra charge which I feel was unnecessary! I live locally so will visit again but I will make sure of what I'm getting in future!

Lovely hot food. Great service. Very tasty food. Well worth a visit. Was recommended it by the owner of the orchard house b and b which is 4 minutes up the road. That is a great place to stay too. Check them out!

Nice looking pub Shame about the staff. I Have been a couple of times and the attitude of the bar staff is terrible. Shame really because it’s a nice local pub but it’s spoilt by whoever is running the place

Booked a table for Sunday Lunch for the first time .. although have eaten here before during the week .. have to say wasn't disappointed.. great service and although I like my beef medium rare, I really couldn't fault .. the pub was really busy and sometimes the food can reflect in not a good way .. certainly not the case today .. Sunday Lunch was excellent! Slight mix up with our table at midday but soon rectified by the very pleasant lady who greeted us at the door. Rest of the staff were great also. Plates piping hot, hence meal was piping hot. Lunch was very well cooked and flavoursome. Two of our party of five had starters, the food was presented well and enjoyed very much. Mains, three went for roast beef and two for turkey. Again we were all very pleased the roast potatoes were exceptional. All cooked fresh on the premises. A selection of scrumptious desserts followed with two of our party opting for the misery dessert and were not disappointed. Coffee followed with chocolate mints. Then the bill which was very reasonable, considering the food we consumed. Don't miss out on going to The Crown. You won't be disappointed we will certainly be calling again.

Great service, atmosphere and food. Cannot fault, everything is great, service time is fast. Food is delicious, great portions and great costs.

Great lunchtime venue, excellent Xmas atmosphere, very good service, very busy at midday. Mini breakfast was massive, two of everything, and huge veggie lasagne with garlic bread and chips. Definitely will return.

Food is ok but the bar staff are sullen and don’t want to be there. Waiters and waitresses are friendly but sometimes seem embarrassed by the food they are bringing to the table

Ordered a bbq bacon burger and it did not have bbq sauce in it was smothered in mayo sauce, I asked for another burger and they simply refused to give me my money back or give me another burger

I want to start this review by saying there were clear signs on entry saying they were short staffed and it was impacting service. Firstly the food, came in good time considering how busy they were. The starters (cheese dipping pot and chicken strips) came with a nice salad. However, the cheese dipping pot wasn't 'dippy' at all, it was just overbaked cheese with some hard pitta bread. The roast was okay, nice potatoes, veg was really good but the meat was beyond disappointing. I had pork, which tasted exactly the same as ones I remember from school dinners 20 years ago! I expected it to be more carvery than boil in the bag. . Service was okay, maybe I misunderstood if it was full table service or not (?) we wasn't told. Had to ask a member of staff (who was literally doing nothing) to take our order even though the peg which we were told to put this on the spoon and someone would take our order, had been there for a while. Nice to see the manager (?) looking after the temperature by opening the doors, it was quite stuffy. I would have mentioned a few of these issues but as there was a notice saying they were short staffed it seemed a little unfair. Still no excuse for poor quality meat at a Sunday dinner... that's supposed to be the best bit..

Once again we have enjoyed a very tasty Sunday Roast at The Crown, Stratton... Very nicely presented, plenty of fresh vegetables and tender meat. We'll be back!!

Visited the Rat Trap Friday night. The food was excellent and good value for money. Mark and his staff are always polite and helpful. Great night, will be returning soon.

I took my friend visiting from Australia and my mum for birthday lunch. Booked for 2pm, arrived 5 minutes early. We were shown to a table at 2. The place was less than half full but plenty of staff. Nonetheless after 40 minutes we had to ask to be served. The female attending us was uninterested, could barely even look at us and ended up throwing our cutlery on the table. By the way we had not complained so this behaviour was baffling. When the food finally arrived almost an hour after our arrival it was well cooked. So, well done to the kitchen and zero points for service. I will never go back, it was a bad experience.

Food was cooked to perfection, meat was cooked how I asked, staff are amazing please visit it’s a must

We visited tonight had a scampi ,6 oz rump ,steak pie and a steak and stilton .We had to wait quite a time but it was rather busy due to a Christmas party . All the food was ok and cooked well .We had 2 sweets a cheese cake and a sticky toffee pudding but we were charged for a salted caramel £5.50 as well , not realising untill at home looking at bill .Such a pity as some one had also noticed this on their visit on Tripadvisor.

We were over from Ireland visiting family when we tried to book a meal here. The first booking was for a Tuesday evening for a table of 10 which we were told they couldn't do so we went elsewhere. So we tried a second time to book this time a Thursday evening for a table of 6, the girl we spoke to was trying her hardest to put us off booking a table by repeating "it's rock n roll bingo don't you know" it gets very loud from 6.30pm. We told here that was ok. We turned up on time but with an extra 2 guests, when we walked through the door we were greeted from the same girl who we spoke to on the phone. We apologized for the extra 2 guests and asked if we could squeeze 2 more seats on our table only to be told that we had only a table for 4 and they had already squeezed 2 extra seats onto that table, after explaining to her that the booking was for 6 people and not for 4 people and a small table for 4: was inadequate to seat 6 people well she put her hands up and said "well what do you want me to do about it, it's rock n roll bingo don't you know" so as you can imagine we did not and went and had a lovely family meal at Robin Farm instead. Just a little tip for the management if you don't want people to eat here on a Thursday night and you would rather deal solely with your rock n roll bingo then let the chef have a night of and don't book people in for food. We will never return

Just moved into the area and my new local is above and beyond exceptional! Danielle was an brilliant hostess! we will be back and recommend!! X

There was a large group in so bit of a wait. Food was lovely , really tasty , nice hot and good portion size . Great deal two meals for £15 and good choice of food in this deal. Staff were really attentive and have great system with pegs so they know when you want them. Only grumble is didn’t read bill properly and when looked when got of bag at charged for extra drinks we did have. Not huge amount but …….

We have visited multiple times since lockdown has lifted. The pub is well organised and our family feel safe visiting during these uncertain times. The food is good quality pub food. Our most recent visit was for a 14th birthday and the team were fantastic. One of our party wanted a specific meal that was unavailable and the team came up with an alternative solution that met our requirements. The team are always professional and welcoming. We will be returning when the second lockdown has lifted.

Had the food tonight. Presentation was poor. Scampi looked like a kids meal. Best bit of the meal was the garden peas!! Won’t be going back for food!

Had a wonderful lunch (CROWN ROAST) here today fresh vegetables all really well cooked quick service and friendly staff

Just had the peppercorn beef with bubble and squeak.Very tasty, the meat melted in the mouth the sauce was yummy the bubble and squeak a great combination with this meal.Also nice on the children menu to have tagliatelle as a choice.Will be back again.

My Nanna arranged for me to meet up with my new friend Jeff and my cousin Parker to all have our tea in the Crown, I had Chicken strips, curly fries and beans, Jeff had Bolognaise and Garlic Bread and Parker Fish Finger with Chips and his Daddy ordered him beans instead of Peas so when Danielle brought our meals to the tables my Uncle Jason asked if they could have peas instead and Danielle was so lovely she said of course and returned with the peas for him – it was all yummy and we all ate a lot but we had room for a scoop of ice cream for our pudding. The staff were all so nice to us as we did run around a lot and we were quite noisy and we were a tad messy but we had a lovely time and we will come back! Hope you don’t mind Dan, Tan and staff at the CrownLove from Teddy aged 2 years 9 months, Parker aged 2 and Jeff nearly 2 !!! xxx P.S. My sister and I took my elderly father for lunch, Dad ordered a steak which was very tough and he was unable to eat much of it. It was a shame as he is now in care and this was a treat for him to go out. I did mention that the steak wasn't good but the waiter didn't seem that bothered. After we had finished our meal we were brought a huge pudding for us all to share which was meant to make up for the steak. I would rather have had a replacement steak to be honest. Sadly, I won't be rushing back.

We visited The Crown Inn when we stayed at Highworth House, which is less that 5 minutes away. They do have their own accomodation, but we have not stayed there. We had a really lovely meal though, and the staff were really friendly. Great atmospher.

The food is always very good and value for money and you can book certain area's of the pub it also has accommodation available for you to stay and explore the area

Given a £10 voucher so went for a date night. I had pulled pork burger and misses had a steak and ale pie. Was surprised at the amount and tasted awesome. Staff were nice and polite. Never been here before but will definitely be coming again. The good food did stop the conversation on the date night

An excellent Christmas spread for our large party. The fish pie which I had was really good although the sprouts could have been cooked a bit more. Pudding of Christmas Mess was divine and plentiful. I could not have managed a starter as well!!

My husband and I eat here regularly and are always extremely satisfied with the food quality and excellent service, so we opted to book for my fathers 90th birthday meal for 17 guests. As always we were made very welcome and the food quality was excellent. We were especially pleased with the swift service and all of our meals were served promptly and efficiently which meant no one was kept waiting, even though we ordered a variety of dishes from their excellent menu choice. All diners were very happy with their meals.Danielle and her staff are a fabulous, efficient, pleasant team and ensured that we had a great evening celebrating Dad’s 90th birthday.Thank you to you all.

The portions are always really generous and the food is fantastic. At times the service can be a bit slow but it's always worth the wait

Took my wife for breakfast after she had finished a long night shift we both had large full English breakfasts every item was cooked perfectly we both couldn’t finish everything I think our eyes where bigger than our bellies LOL so we took our left over meat home for our Dalmatian so 3 of us had a good breakfast.

Upon arriving, we were told we hadn’t booked a table but eventually found out was booked under a completely different name, not sure how that happened.

From the outside it looks a small pub but it is so big inside with plenty of eating areas. Menu is interesting

Food here is always good. Staff friendly, guy behind the bar exceptionally so, very polite and seems to genuinely like being there. Food came out quickly with no complaints. Lunch time menu is good. Will certainly be back.

went in after a long journey from Scotland sat for about 10 minutes then i asked a waitress if we had to order at the bar she said yes so i went and ordered our meals at the bar went to pay for it and got told they dont accept Scottish money due to forgeries felt like sayingdont English money have forgeries then but didnt used my royal bank of SCOTLAND card which was accepted sat downwith our drinks which was fine to start with but went flat after about 10 minutes the food came was very greasy so had to leave most of it couldnt get another drink as only had Scottish money WONT be back

As a family that likes to eat out a lot, we stumbled upon this great pub about a year ago, we now tend to not go anywhere else! My uncle and his side of the family travel from Cirencester to come here regularly. The lasagne is gorgeous I have this normally all the time unless they have sold out, I now preorder when booking my table the homemade cheesecake is absolutely delicious keep up the good work!

Would not recommend this pub. Have tried to go on two separate occasions on a Sunday evening and they have refused to serve food due to the quiz which does not start until 8pm. My partner and I arrived at 6.45 so an hour and 15 minutes would be a sufficient for a pub meal to be served and eaten. we were very disappointed and the staff were not at all helpful. Will not be trying again.

Been here before, but this visit was awful, so we won't be returning. How can a pub not serve a glass of sauvignon blanc? Well, this pub will only serve a bottle. Not a glass. A whole bottle. How ridiculous. Decent looking menu, but the food was just basic, just bland pub grub. And the lasagne was more onion than meat, to the point that it was unedible. Like an onion pie, it was. When I complained, nothing was done and nothing was offered, it was just basically take it or leave it. Really disappointing. No wonder so many pubs are closing if they offer this sort of service. I'm guessing this one will be next to go..

I have not been to the Crown for many years but my sister and I where out shopping nearby and thought we would give it a try. Some areas look a little tattie and dusty. Having said that the staff and food were very good great choice of jacket potatoes and fillings these are all served with a side salad. I had the prawn and my sister had the tuna both were very generous portions and very tasty

Five of us had a Christmas Lunch here in the lead up to Christmas. We were impressed with the place names that reminded us of what we had pre ordered. All courses were well presented, particularly the desserts. Portions were generous and well cooked with lovely fresh vegetables and all served at the appropriate temperature. Staff were polite and friendly. Our only niggle was that we were sat by the door, that invariably stayed open on a cold winter's day!

Went for dinner with friends, service was exceptional. My starter of crayfish tails served on a wooden board was excellent, plenty of sauce, but no melon. My friends also enjoyed their various starters. Main course was also excellent and of our group we had all of the choices, extra gravy was no problem. Deserts from the menu were also very good. Here is the problem, some of us paid an extra £2.00 for the cheeseboard which came out as a slab of cheese in 5 layers, which depending on how you read the menu is what it is. When paying extra for a cheeseboard I would expect something like a cheddar, blue cheese and a soft cheese at least. Not something where it all tastes like mild cheddar. Apart from the disapointing cheeseboard everything else was lovely

A reasonable meal with a some tasty dishes, although one or two not so hot. Tasty and well presented puddings enjoyed by everyone. This pub has a good atmosphere and staff are helpful.

We went here for a birthday and I ordered chilli, when it came it looked more looked, sorry for this readers, a plate of Diarrhoea, and the taste wasn't any better. I said to the waitress about it and stated I was non too happy, I couldn't eat it, so went up to pay my bill, and all I got was, oh you're the guy who didn't like his meal, I said to him that I would pay for this, but would never eat here again. They are so unprofessional. I do a lot of cooking myself, so know when a meal is crap.

We booked a party booking for my partners 50th birthday. The service was good and the staff were well organised and friendly, the food was really good and nearly everyone really enjoyed what they had which was a whole mix of meals including vegan and vegetarian. There was 40 of us altogether and we had a great night. I will definitely be returning at some point.

The food was good and the young lady and guy running the bar and serving at table were very personable. Unfortunately, the lady who appeared to be the duty manager had a real attitude problem, both with customers and fellow staff. Arkells really to get a grip of the need to retrain her with advice on basic communication skills.

Vist just about saved by decent food and venue but seriously let down by rude bar staff!

Hi, ordered a steak & Stilton plus a Chicked Sandwich as we just wanted something quick whilst passing through. This was offered as a better deal for buying two so seemed an ideal choice. Took a little longer than expected and despite having an option of white or brown they only had Brown bread, it looked great when delivered. My wife opened hers to look inside only to discover the tiniest piece of steak ever looking rather lost in the middle of this toasted triple sandwich with one piece of rocket leaf & after a very close look something that may have been Stilton, possibly. Not to be put off as mine was ok, she proceeded to eat it but unfortunately the steak turned out to be a hard lump of fat....so after removing it & putting the slice of toast to one side, moved to the other layer....exactly the same. So luckily she did have the coleslaw which was very nice & some fries to eat. The waitress asked if everything was ok, to which we explained showed her the problem. She immediately offered to bring another but we explained we were in a rush so didn't have time to wait, so with an 'ok' off she went......the was it, nothing further was offered in the way of refund or another similar meal at another time which would have been perfectly fine, so we were left feeling rather short changed and my wife short of food.....we were aware it was only a 4 ounce steak (it did look less that that) but it would have been nice to be able to eat it or at least offer a portion of meat sufficient to fill the sandwich slightly more even if at a dearer cost as what we were served was completely inadequate, pointless & a waste of money....

Poor service and mediocre food! Myself and my wife were looking forward to a nice bit of pub grub but ended up getting board of waiting! Manager with very bad attitude also!

My husband and I visited here early Friday evening and it was great to see it was busy already. 2 great fresh pints of cider were accompanied by cajun chicken burger and sizzling chicken.

Lovely friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Several occasions we have visited for the Sunday night quiz- what a hoot! The staff are friendly and efficient- the quiz is fun and the food is very tasty- would definitely recommend.

You know what you're getting with this place, lovely local pub with good honest food! Menu selection offers options for most requirements and also offers gluten free dessert options. Staff are lovely and efficient without being intrusive. Well worth a visit, only criticism is the size of the parking spaces, some are very narrow!

Two friends and I visited at Christmas and again this week. Both meals were good, the service was friendly, and prompt. The bar service was funny. The food was delicious and prompted us to visit again.

Having stayed here on business over the past 7 years, it is disappointing to see that little has been done to keep the hotel up to date. Purely cosmetic - Its not difficult to keep the grouting in the bathrooms white and not black, to update the bed covers, purchase new towels so they are not as thin as tracing paper etc. The staff are great, the food I dont have a bad word to say (especially items on the specials board) however it needs some TLC

Having been out and about on a Sunday morning, we thought we’d go for lunch. We had been to the Crown last year and decided to go for a return visit. It wasn’t too busy, so no problem getting a table. It was a friendly welcome and we both went for the roast beef. It was a longer than expected wait, however everything was hot and tasty. The beef was nice, however the Yorkshire pudding was a bit dry. All in all, we both enjoyed it and thought it good value.

Went for lunch after seeing the menu board while there a previous evening. Went back midweek lunchtime as a couple to try something out. Went for one of the 6 different 6 nations burgers (themed round each participant) and was extremely pleased. The service was great, the food took an appropriate time to come out and food was lovely, tasty ingredients, well prepared and satisfyingly filling. Thoroughly enjoyable experience I would have no hesitation in coming back again to try something else.

It was the worst roast dinners I've ever had out. It was luke warm, mash and yorkshire pudding bulked out the meal, one roast potato was like a bullet and there was hardly any gravy or meat. Would never go again. The service was friendly, that't the only good point

Visited Sunday lunchtime with my wife and daughter, we all had the roast beef couldn't fault it very nice roast.

Visited the Crown Inn on 22-24 Jan and was giving a room with no heating, made a complaint and was offered another portable heater one was already in the room so there must have been a problem with the pubs central heating. The room temperature was the same as outside and in winter months this is unacceptable. I have stayed here many times before but will not be returning, wrote to the site and brewery but not interested aside of offering a free meal when my complaint was about the room?? Bizarre but not to worry.

Poor service. Not friendly, unhelpful staff. Food was not bad. Very disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody!

My wife and I had lunch at The Crown yesterday. My wife's Rump with Jacket Potato was superb and only £8.95. I had the mixed grill which is undoubtably excellent value the Steak Sauseage Mushrooms and Onions were excellent but the rest of the meats were a touch overcooked for my taste. It's excellent value and a very big meal but I think they should cut down the quantity and concentrate on the quality of presentation. The staff are very user friendly and the bill very reasonable. Thank you.

We went to celebrate my husbands birthday. His steak was fine but I was really disappointed with the steak and ale pie. The veg had been boiled to a pulp and the mash had clearly been sitting on the plate for quite a while. The pie was mostly puff pastry with a pretty tasteless filling. I had to ask for gravy although I wouldn’t have thought anyone could eat it without it. It was a shame because everyone else was happy with their food .

I found this little Gem by accident some weeks ago while having to work at the local Honda plant. After my first night stay I instructed the rest of my team to ensure they booked into this establishment.

I've now stayed at this establishment 4 times in the past three weeks. The young staff are all extremely helpful and pleasant and a credit to the management. The rooms are extremely clean and well furnished. The bar and food facilities make this one of my ALL TIME favorite places to stop whilst on the road with work.

Went tonight to The Crown Inn with work colleagues and whilst we had to book a table in advance nevertheless it was a great night with lots of fun and laughs. Thanks for the good memories.

Stayed on night...downstairs room...bathroom needed updating, shower poor either boiling hot... or cold. Bed creaky and had dip in middle...noise from just outside, people chatting etc.Breakfast ok. Not worth £78, sorry.

Visited on a Tuesday lunchtime - place was fairly quiet. A comfortable pub with a pleasant decor. We didn't bother with starters or dessert - just went straight for the main course. All our meals were delivered in a timely friendly fashion and tasted very good - definitely a place to revisit!

Live just down the road and the family decided to eat out instead of staying in to cook. The inside could do with a bit of renovating but the food and the staff are brilliant

We attended a lunch for 90 people on a busy Sunday. The staff coped superbly, the food was good, served nicely. The staff helped create a lovely relaxed atmosphere and really couldn't have been more helpful.

Food is always good here, portion sizes are generous and the changing specials keeps the menu interesting. Only downside to the pub is that it only sells arkells ales. But that is expected from an arkels pub.

Went here a few years ago and was OK, we decided to go here after the rat trap a minute down the road only did Sunday roasts, as we didn't really want a roast decided on popping in the crown as we were starving, the wait was quite long which was made known anyway, and my partner said her steak was nice, then there was my steak ale and mushroom pie which to say was watery was an understatement, it really did look like very watered down gravy and no sign of a mushroom, maybe they drowned in the water, the steak was there albeit very small, probably the worst pie I've had, about a dozen chips, this really is a place I wouldn't recommend had the meal taken off the bill, gave 2 stars because partner said hers was ok otherwise 1 would have been more appropriate

Popped in today for a second Sunday lunch in a month. I was tempted by the two for a tenner in March a fortnight ago, and was pleasantly surprised. All freshly cooked and piping hot !

We were 30 in number from "JANETS PUPPY SKOOL" for a meal for fund raising for Swindon guide dogs.

My husband visited on a Saturday night. The pub didn't seem to be very busy however the service was quite slow. The staff were friendly though.

My Wife and I decided to go to the Crown at Stratton last night for an evening meal. We both chose the mixed grill.

We had a steak and ale pie £7.95 with chips and veg and a piri piri chicken salad £8.95, there was a small wait but it was busy for a Wednesday evening . The pie was nice and hot with large chunks of beef , the chicken salad was ok nothing to write home about .It came with a few small tomatoes, cucumber and a few lettuce leaves,sweetcorn,onion etc .Then my wife had a cherry cheese cake with cream £3.95 , very nice.The meals were good value for the cost, will definitely be back to sample the rest of the menu.

We went as a party group and all had a variety of meals from the menu and specials board to include steaks, vegetarian options, fish and chips, pies and lamb. Everyone was happy with their food and the service was friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable for food and drinks with house wines at £9 a bottle. We will be returning.

Today myself, husband, son, daughter and her boyfriend decided to go for lunch at the crown stratton Swindon, as it is our local and we haven't been for some years. How disappointing it was, our meals took so long to come out we were about to ask where they were. Thank goodness we didn't, as the young girl who brought us our food was (not happy to be there) to say the least. Service with a smile would have been a start.! No instead she just called out what was in her hand then just put it down, thankyou! My husband ordered a mixed grill which came out on two different plates. She never explained one was to follow, the eggs on the plate were dry! My son had the burger which he said was just an ordinary burger you get from a supermarket. We were disappointed as we were looking to go to a local on a regular basis but this experience has put us off returning . shame.

An excellent meal with great, tasty food. . The anti pasta was delicious. The red snapper fish with pasta had a great flavour and to finish off lovely Christmas pudding. Well done. The ales were excellent and the soft drinks like elderflower were available. Do visit. The staff were very friendly!!

Went on the 15th Dec for our work Christmas dinner. Really enjoyed the food and the service was really good too. Would recommend and return.

Visited with a couple of friends on a Tuesday evening, I always book, then at least you know you will get a table. Bar staff were friendly, place was decorated for Xmas and was clean and presentable, can't comment on loos as didn't need to visit them.

Went with my wife for a Sunday Roast, was 2 for £10. This represented good value for money. However, you get what you pay for. Personally, I'd rather pay more and get more! Quality of beef wasn't great either. It was just cheap pub food. Nothing special, the service was not great either. More training needed. When I asked if they did cashback, the response was "if you give me a £20 note, I can give you 20 £1 coins". I did explain that that isn't cashback, just changing money. But it was lost.
