Remembering The Crown as a warm and welcoming quintessential village pub when when living in Headley some years before, we booked table for Saturday lunch at 2pm. With only another table of four, there was a bit of a wait for food. The real issue was that when we came to order dessert (2 x affrogato), we were told we needed to be quick because the pub would be closing in 5 minutes. Service was dour and unfriendly, food underwhelming and generally poor value for money. Such a shame!

Me, the wife and the dog, dropped in here as we'd been out walking locally. What a lovely pub this is! It just felt so cosy and friendly. The staff were really nice and the bar lady paid special attention to Bert, our dog, bringing him a bowl of water and a couple of dog biscuit treats. Of course that meant that he had to show off his 'roll over' trick, to get the second treat. She loved that! So we both had the roast pork dinner. This looked amazing, with a nice amount of meat, veggies, roast spuds. Just the right amount in our opinions. And it tasted superb! Spuds done perfectly, some pork crackling on the side and delicious gravy. My wife even commented to the lady that it was the best roast dinner she had eaten for many, many years, and that is a compliment. I would definitely have given 5 stars but it was quite expensive at £58 for two single course dinners and two pints, but that said, I'd pay that again for what we had. We will be back for sure

We were really looking forward to having the roast beef, something we have had before and thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately today the beef was tough, greatly inferior to the quality in the past. Also the cleanliness of the table we were offered left a lot to be desired. There were spiders on my chair, the table and the windowsill were covered in spiders webs!! Not what you expect when you go out for a meal.

Lovely pub, not a lovely experience . Sunday Lunch Before we visited we looked up the menu for Sunday lunch The "download menu" states £19.50 , I think for "Beef or lamb." But if you just check " Sunday lunch menu" at the top of pubs website, it states £21.00 " Beef or Pork" When you arrive they fancy their chances by charging £24.50 , " Beef or lamb" Also says you get cauliflower cheese, we didn't , but we did get one and a half carrots , and the beef for the price was well over cooked . Overall the meal was poor. We wanted sticky toffee pudding for dessert , they had no sticky toffee pudding. Landlord was rude too, serving staff were pleasant. Overall, not recommended , maybe an off day on the food front, but no excuse for the misleading, varied prices depending on where you happen to look. If the Crown thinks it can push its prices for close to £25 , or £21 or £19.50 for a basic roast dinner, it needs to be the best pub Sunday lunch in the area, it's nowhere near , maybe go back to £15.00 , and work up from there until the offering is representative of the price. Poor experience ....

We live close by to this lovely pub and, to our shame, had not visited before. We have tended to drive to pubs in the surrounding areas and now wonder why we bothered with this gem so close by. All the staff were so welcoming to us and our dog and the interior has been very tastefully updated. As for the food, it really was the best pub food I have had in ages. Beautifully presented and cooked with really wonderful flavours. My Sea Trout was divine and my chosen dessert of Limoncello Panetonne bread and butter puddings was gorgeous. There are several parking spaces opposite the pub adjacent to a very nice terraced outside seating area. If you're in the surrounding area of East Hampshire, you'll struggle to find a better dining experience than The Crown at Arford.

The wifi at The Crown tells us that this is the perfect country pub. And it may well be right. I could find nothing to fault with this brilliant place. The lady behind the bar was chatty and friendly, serving well-kept ale and a wide range of spirits between tending the fires. The locals brought in their dogs to add to the atmosphere and on arrival each dog got a treat from behind the bar to welcome them. And through to the cosy restaurant and another log fire. The young waitresses were engaging and funny. The menu is short but well-balanced. We had a bread board, burrata and a roasted cauliflower, then finished with a creme brulee. The food was truly excellent. The burrata was unusually served with sweet potato and tenderstem broccoli, with toasted hazelnuts. It was amazing. One of the best dishes I've eaten out since I last ate at Heston's, before the pandemic. A great idea, well executed. This is a brilliant little place, worth the drive out. I can't wait until I'm next in Surrey so that I have an excuse to return. Properly a five-star perfect country pub.

Although the Crown is our nearest pub, we'd not yet eaten here under current ownership as it always seemed quite pricey - we tend to pop down for a coupla pints (their ales are always well kept) then eat at home instead. We decided to push the boat out and give it a go - and I'm really glad we did. The menu isn't all run-of-the-mill stuff, so you have the option to try something different if you want to. It isn't cheap, but the quality was really, really good and there was plenty of it (I'd been worried portion sizes might be small, but am happy to report this wasn't the case). The bread basket with whipped butter was lovely, the venison was melt-in-your-mouth and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for! Service was good, but not pushy, so the whole experience really hit the spot - with the added bonus of being able to walk home, rather than one of us having to drive. We'll definitely be back for more...

Walked down to The Crown from Headley Down for dinner - first time in a few years. My wife and I have been Friday night dinner regulars for many, many years so keen to see how things had changed and we were not disappointed. The décor and ambience of the place has been retained and refreshed. The table service was excellent - couldn't fault it. The menu was superb (we had skate wing / burger, followed by sticky toffee / cheese), augmented by a very comprehensive wine list. Overall, good value for money - definitely returning for Friday night dinner in the not to distant future.

My wife and I went out on Saturday evening to The Crown, with our dog Zeus a 14 month old black Labrador Retriever. We had last eaten at the Crown on Christmas Eve, when we were one of only four families in the pub due to Covid restrictions.Saturday’s meal was excellent. I had a steak that was cooked to perfection and the chips were superb. My wife had the cod dish. We finished up with cherry crumble and sticky toffee pudding. The waiting staff were very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed at all times.Whilst a little on the expensive side, the service and quality of food makes it well worth the while. Zeus was treated like a lord - it is definitely a dog friendly pub, which is great for us.We are already planning our next trip for a few weeks time as my son who was away for the weekend on a CCF trip missed out. Since I wrote my last review of this pub back in 2013 much has changed and in our family's opinion, not necessarily for the better. When the new owners took over some two years ago it seemed to go from a cosy friendly village pub with good food at reasonable prices to a pretentious 'gastro style' establishment, presenting 'English style Tapas' - a weird and frankly over priced concept. It seemed no coincidence that on the few occasions we visited there appeared to be a distinct lack of custom as the locals voted with their feet and went elsewhere. Thankfully however, the management now appear to have taken on board the various adverse comments and when we recently returned we were delighted to find that the menu had reverted to a more conventional style and the price was extremely reasonable for what turned out to be an excellent meal. The starters were imaginitive and beautifully presented. My 'wild mushroom cappuccino ' turned out to be a generous portion of a delicious frothy soup whilst the rib eye steak was accompanied by delicious hot and crispy chips (now included with the steak rather than being an additional side). The creme brulee with white peaches and a raspberry coulis was a triumph worthy of any top end restaurant. Yes, none of this comes cheaply but for food of this standard in such beautiful surroundings we considered it more than reasonable and are just glad that we are in walking distance of such a great little pub that once again seems to be 'coming up with the goods'. Already looking forward to our next visit!

I’ve had some amazing meals here, I can only think the restaurant/chef had an off night. The bread basket which is usually varied and fresh was verging on stale, certainly not home made and clearly reheated. The sausage roll was awful - poorly reheated as parts were warm, parts were still cold but the whole thing was bland and tasteless. No light flaky pastry as I was expecting. It honestly tasted shop bought. Steaks were really disappointing- £24 each but honestly, I’ve had better in a Wetherspoons for a tenner. At that price, the meat needs to be aged, properly seasoned and served with a bit of panache. No flavour to the meat at all. Service was good as always but I would place bets that the usual chef was not in that night (19th August) Not the birthday meal we expected. We didn’t stay for dessert and I noted none of the other tables did either...

The Crown at Arford. Went to the crown for dinner last night and very disappointed. We were charged £24 for 8oz sirloin steak which was more like rump and half a mushroom, third of a tomatoe and no chips. They were an extra for £4.50. I can only say the meal was very average and certainly not worth the money they're asking. There was no background music. They can surely do much better when asking silly prices. Table serving was with no gloves on either so we felt exposed as well. I won't be going there again in a good while under current management.

Each of the five courses was explained by a member of their team and details of the wines given by the visiting sommelier Alan Snudden from the General Wine Company Liphook. We went for Sunday lunch, my wife had roast beef and I had roast pork, the beef was very over done and dry, the pork was ok but only two thin slices. The roast potatoes were dry, the vegtables, one carrot, one parsnip and some kale were fine. The food was over priced for a Sunday lunch considering the quality, e.g. over £18 for the beef. The menu is limited. The menu prices are very expensive! The pricing seems to be getting more and more expensive. I think this pub wants to be in the middle of a metropolitan area with their pricing. We have been using this pub for 35 years and have seen lots of changes, not always for the better. The new landlords got off to a bit of a shaky start but are getting into their stride now. The bar team are friendly and welcoming though weekday lunchtimes can be a bit quiet and lacking in atmosphere. The food on our recent lunchtime visit was very good. Prices are not cheap and portions are not huge but in our opinion they are right to focus on quality. They held a quiz evening recently which was very successful (no, we didn't win but we did enjoy it); hopefully there'll be more of this sort of thing. Went for lunch today with my wife. We had been recommended to the Crown by our friends who live local. Advertised as a country pub with open fires. We arrived, not many people in and the place was very cold, no wonder they had blankets on the backs of our seats. The wood burning stove was blocked by a table with three people eating but when they had gone the stove was barely warm, even another log did not increase the temperature. No hot water in the toilets, radiator was off, very very cold in the toilets. Food was ok with a limited menu more likened to a summer menu rather than a winter menu. My wife had the terrine which was to come with a brioche but we asked if we could change for bread, which was provided. When the bill was presented we had been charged extra for the bread which I thought was quite mean. The restaurant area remained cold and very dark, no overhead or wall lights evident and quite difficult to see what you were eating. The quality of food was ok but nothing special. Sadly we would give this a miss next time we are out for lunch.

Found this little gem on Trip Adviser, it’s a little off the beaten track in a little village but well worth a trip. The setting is comfortable and relaxing with a log burner in the dining area and pretty little jars of flowers on each table. A relatively short menu but everything is seasonal and cooked on site. The selection of breads to start was plentiful and served warm with a lovely whipped butter. We chose the fillet steak and the cod. Both were excellent, the cod was in a spicy coconut sauce, well seasoned and just on the edge of the heat I find can tolerate. The crispy potatoes in top remained crispy and added texture. The steak was amazing. Real flavour, well cooked and well rested. It was served with a creamy peppercorn sauce which was rich and delicious. Tripe cooked chips to top it off, served with a lovely bearnaise sauce.

The food here is actually very good, far better than many country pubs, and the service is great. However, the menu is weirdly eclectic and very limited - which could/would work IF there were a few familiar pub favourites (Crown at Arford Burger, Crown at Arford Fish and Chips, Crown at Arford Shepherds Pie etc etc) included on the menu. Instead there are a very limited number of dishes under the titles of 'Meat', 'No Meat' and 'Sides'. Added to this, the portions are very small... so you need to order lots of accompaniments/sides... but there aren't many to choose from, and those that are there, are... well, different.

This might seem odd, rating it 5* for food, 5* for service, 5* for location but overall a big dissappointment. This was our first visit and we had been looking forward to trying it out ever since it reopened, and had high hopes. The services was excellent, although to be fair there were only two occupied tables for all the staff to wait on. The interior has been tastfully refurbished without losing its original charm but I did think the one modern high table with stools was completely out of place. The highlight was the food which was delicious. The big problem however is the approach to the menu - "small plates and sharing". This principle works well in Indian, Chinese and Spanish restaurants so why is it such a disaster here? I think the problem is in the food pairing and how it is served. The menu is hard to understand, and if you are not familair with the plate sizes it is very difficult to know how much to order. We were advised to order two plates per person, but - which two? The choices available meant you could have fish and...lamb? Don't think that goes. And so on. On top of that, some of the "plates you can share" were unsharable - how do you share a small piece of cod? Another problem is the plates arrive when the chef is ready, not when the customer is ready so rather than sit looking at a plate while waiting for others to be served, you feel obliged to divvy out the plate and share it while you wait. After everyone has had a mouthful of cod you wonder what to do next. Overall, it feels that this pub is run for the indulgence of the chef, not the enjoyment of the customer. If he continues to insist on the small plate approach, he needs to take a leaf out of the aforementioned restaurants' book and have plates that are sharable, that go together and arrive together so we can all enjoy a proper meal. It was a relief to find that the desserts were in conventional portions and were very good. Overall, I thought it was ridiculously expensive for a pub meal even if the food was above average. If I am going to spend that kind of money I think I'll go to a restaurant that has meal-sized plates and not to a pub that doesn't quite know what it is. After the intial flurry of interest I wonder if this small plate approach is sustainable, particularly as there is strong competition from other pubs nearby who seem to have no problem filling tables.

I went as a big family group for a birthday celebration and although the food and wine tasted good, the portions of food were shockingly small and without a choice of sides. The menu was odd, Fish tempura with green Thai sauce came with nothing else and the only option on the menu that could serve as a side was chips. Cassoulet had 1 sausage placed in the middle of the plate with a few beans in the sauce, no sides. The Lamb cutlet came with a tiny portion of Dauphinoise potatoes, we were gobsmacked at the ridiculous size of the portion for the extortionate price. (See picture) We had to order two lots of bread and more chips to make up for the lack of food. We left a bit flat for what should have been a great evening.

Our first visit to The Crown so not sure what it was like before it’s recent refurb but it has been tastefully done - cosy, stylish and comfortable, and a lovely venue for Sunday lunch. Food was really excellent quality - really fresh and tasty ingredients - though unfortunately was not particularly hot. Roast beef was melt-in-the-mouth and the ham gorgeous. Homemade horseradish was particularly good! Generously portioned cheese board and all courses beautifully presented. General ambience was nice and chilled, staff chatting with locals and all friendly and welcoming - our dog was made a fuss of, which is a big win in our book! Service was also good - Tom particularly attentive and friendly - though some of the younger members of staff seemed ill at ease and there were a few awkward moments (the chap who delivered our food to us was totally silent which was a little strange). We definitely plan to return in a while, when the team have bedded in following the refurb and the pub has found its feet a little.

Just got home after dinner at this pub with my husband and daughter and I’m incandescent with rage at how badly we were treated ! I have never been spoken to by someone in the hospitality industry in this way.

I chose the flan which was the best quiche i have had in years. The texture was light and fluffy and deep. I have had too many thin and rubbery flans elsewhere that whilst i ordered it in trepidation u was so pleased i did.

First visit to The Crown and menu looked nice but prices quite expensive for a pub. Ordered the House Pate to start as I adore pate (bar staff had to go and ask what it was!) followed by Old English Sausages and Mash for main, again a bit expensive for a pub but hey, they were bound to be nice. Alas, not to be. The very small portion of house pate was plain course pork probably bought from a supermarket although just enough for the four pieces of very small, stale, ready toasted ciabatta out of a packet for £7.25. As an ex 'Pub Owner' I was somewhat mortified to pay restaurant prices for this. Get a grip guys... It should be home-made for that price with thick crusty bread, not tat from a supermarket. moving on.... My main course. Old English Sausages and Mash with Onion Jus with seasonal veg. Well, it got a bit better. The mash was lovely, the veg nicely cooked too but the sausages were just plain bland pork sausages £13.95. Again I expected nice sausages for that money. This pub is obviously trying to be a Gastro Pub without upping its game on the food quality and i'm afraid it does not work without modification to that quality of the food you buy in. Bring your prices down or change the quality of the key ingredients of some of the dishes. I'm not tight when eating out and will pay whatever for nice food, even in a pub so a disappointing visit for me i'm afraid. If you don't mind paying over the the top for okay quality pub food, then happy days.

We love this amazing pub. The location is in a beautiful little village where you can sit on the road and watch the world go by. Service is really good and the food is all home made and quality ingredients. I highly recommend the burger!

This was once a good pub, serving a limited but reasonably good menu, but it has without doubt gone downhill. There's been a half-hearted attempt at turning it into a Gastro Pub, but the ubiquitous grey paint and odd cushion coupled with the stained post-war lamp shades and curtains, make it... well, just sad and dingy. As well as this, the menu is very limited and the portions are SMALL.

Long term local drinker and ex employee of the pub, but had a meal there recently and wow, the cod and chips were incredible. Simon is a first class chef and always has produced amazing dishes. That cod was the best I've tasted for a long time and whatever Hillary says there has to be a secret to it!! :)

Took my daughter in here for lunch recently during the week. As it was early we were the only customers but it was a lovely day so we sat in the garden and had lunch. A simple but delicious menu and the old world charm of the pub will certainly see me returning with hubby!

Booked a table through email to which I got a reply back confirming the booking. Always disappointing when you arrive and the staff struggle to find your booking and when they do, state it is for a different time, even though their email confirmed the correct time. Nevertheless, everything sorted and the staff were very helpful.

A small, traditional, warm, welcoming pub with friendly staff and great food. It's in a small village called Arford near Headley. The food is great freshly cooked with some good ideas. Nice wine selection and I believe the beers good too. They have live music occasionally or quiz nights which are popular.

Trying to find a pub to enjoy lunch with my daughter proved to be a problem, with the first place visited having no chef, the 2nd place having been purchased by a chain and converted to a very good standard but not having a lunchtime menu (sea bass for lunch wasn't what we were looking for) and the third actually being owned by the same people as the first (and "not doing lunch").Our fourth choice, the Crown at Arford, proved to be perfect. A proper pub with fantastic food. We both chose a bacon and brie "stuffie", served with hand cut chips and salad.Highly recommended!

You really feel like a guest here. Inside it's small and very cozy, with a open fire to hold you there. The staff are very charming and nothing is to much trouble. The food is very good and the menu changes often. It's off the beaten track and they successfully try hard to make it a choice of destination. A place full of character where your custom is very much appreciated. Not somewhere I would take children although there is a beer garden across the road.

We had our Sunday lunch at the Crown Inn. It was our first visit and my wife was excited because she had read glowing reviews. When we walked in the pub looked very typically traditional. There was a rudimentary menu on the board, so I was less enthusiastic than my wife. The service was excellent and we were soon seated with drinks. My wife ordered the Chicken Roast and my daughter and I had the lamb. The food was fantastic. The presentation was elegant, the taste was delicious and the position size was just right. My daughter and I had the sticky toffee pudding and again it excelled. The meal was reasonably priced for the fare we recieved. We will return!

Great service in a local pub that is steeped in history, within the rural hamlet of Arford.Publican Simon is also the chef serving a comprehensive menu to the bar or restaurant areas. Also to be found are an excellent selection of wines by the glass or bottle. This is a dog friendly establishment with an open log fire to warm the bar area as well as a log burner in the restaurant.

Four of us enjoyed an outstanding dinner at this pub. Between us we had the steak, fish and Steak and kidney pie and all agreed that each dish deserved top marks.I have never had a steak and kidney pie of such intrigue (presented in a beautiful pastry parcel atop mash and red cabbage) that I had never seen before. White bait starter in bread crumbs was also very highly rated. Washed down with Greene King bitter tells me that this landlord knows what he is doing.

We arrived as a group of 10 friends and after a relaxing unhurried drink at the bar we sat down for our meal. The Crown Inn isn't the largest of pubs but they managed to accommodate our party of 10 on one table. The food was very good with full availability of all dishes listed on the menu. Everybody in our party enjoyed their choice which was delivered by friendly and efficient waiting staff. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and will definitely be returning!!
