Fabulous pub, great service and so welcoming to a large group (16 adults). We prebooked a few weeks in advance (with no deposit despite previous comments) as we knew other pubs would struggle to accommodate us. When we arrived, the staff couldn't have done any more for us; we were welcomed warmly, served promptly and had utterly delicious food. We will definitely return, and it was a truly wonderful place to idle away a Sunday afternoon in such a comfortable, beautiful venue. Thanks to all the staff, very much appreciated!

Beautiful inside and Delicious food!!! However was let down at the end with management arguing that the deposit we had paid weeks in advance was non refundable and not taken off the bill. I have never had to pay an admission fee to a pub/restaurant!! Anyway after a very long wait to get it sorted and management seemingly trying to see if we would give up they took the deposit off the bill. 2 other tables were arguing the same thing. Lovely pub but check your bill at the end to make sure you get your deposit back. A deposit is refundable / an initial first payment towards the bill

A lovely old pub and the food and serving staff were wonderful. The very big issue we found was that we had to pay £10 deposit per person (there were 6 of us so they had £60 off us), then when the bill came this hadn't been taken into account. The manageress explained that it is in fact a booking fee (even though it very clearly states online that it's a deposit), as they've had a lot of people previously who hadn't turned up after booking tables. We said fair enough to have a deposit to secure a booking, but as its a deposit it should then be removed from the bill. It took a very long time and a lot of discussion with the manageress but eventually she agreed and it was taken off. Just be very careful to make sure any deposit you pay is removed from the bill. Such a shame as the atmosphere, food and waiting staff were all wonderful.

Ok so this is not a critique on the food as that was delightful! Compliments to the chefs. And the building is beautiful. I am giving a 1 star because the management tried to claim the £60 deposit was a booking fee and wouldn’t be taken off the bill, we were not the only people for this to happen to, as it seems at the time there was another couple complaining about the same thing. If we hadn’t of questioned it, or noticed they would have succeeded in conning us out of the deposit. And as it states under booking online it’s a (DEPOSIT) not (Booking Fee). This was not easily resolved either as they kept saying it was the fee, it was a battle to say the least!!!! Never have I payed admission for a restaurant and never will.

Most importantly, the food we were served was delicious, and every member of staff was really lovely to us - except for one woman who made it perfectly clear our presence was not appreciated. The old lady who tried to take my mother's plate away while she was still eating was extremely rude; looking down her nose, sniffing and sneering at us. If your organisation is supposed to be refined, then she desperately needs to brush up on her ettiquette and manners. I made it perfectly clear on my booking that we would be bringing two dogs with us - so why did the manager not inform me that in fact 'The Crown in Chiddingfold' is actually quite hostile, and definitely not a dog friendly establishment? There are plenty of places that I can take my anxious foster dogs without any aggravation, in fact the staff as well as the customers in most pubs love to meet them and hear their sad little tale. No one even bothered to ask what the problem was in The Crown, they just complained about Bobby whimpering, which says an awful lot about the place really. I have never been made to feel so unwelcome or unwanted anywhere before in my life as I was on Sunday. The fact it was a very special occasion for us, and I was paying a small fortune to be treated so disrespectfully, is actually quite appalling. Safe to say we will not be returning, and neither will I ever recommend this pub to any of my associates. I feel extremely sorry for the lovely young ladies who still had to serve us during our meal, it was as embarrassing for them as it was for us. I actually dread to think how young children are treated here - do you move them out to the back room if they play up and 'other customers' kick up a fuss about it? (The fact I did not see any children or other dogs for the entire 3 hours we were there tells its own story.)

We had booked a table for dinner with friends we hadn’t seen for some time. Unfortunately when we arrived a jazz trio was playing right in front of our table. Now we love jazz but we were there to catch up and natter and this would have been almost impossible, Hearing our plight, the owner (I’m guessing) moved heaven and earth to find a table suitable for us. She just couldn’t have been more helpful. The service was as expected, with a smile and courtesy and the food truly delightful. Our evening was saved, we managed to chat for almost 3 hours ! This is our go to pub / restaurant to meet up with these friends, each only having to drive for an hour to get there, and it’s so worth it.

I had a colleague visiting from overseas and wanted to him to experience a traditional English pub. The Crown is a shining example of this and he was bowled over by it. The welcome, the service, the food, the wine and all the staff are all top class… We shared a few nibbles to start - the honey and mustard sausages are a must. Then we both had the Moroccan chicken main course, which was delicious. To wash it down there is a great selection of local and international ales, lagers and cider, or a diverse wine list. It was a really great experience all round and a great way to showcase the best of English villages and pub hospitality. Thanks for looking after us so well….

The Crown features in a new publication from Camra, pubs with historic interiors in the south of England and you can see why. From the lovely old beams, the panelled dining room, the sedan chair in the hallway, the large inglenook fire which was lit when we visited and the lovely old bar. These days you really need to book but they let us have a table. As we just wanted a drink and its future occupants were yet to arrive. The beer is great, the staff helpful, the ambience lively and all Covid measures in place. If you find yourself in Chiddingfold, they are somehow lucky enough to have two great pubs almost nest to each other.

For weeks, I’d been looking forward to a Christmas lunch with friends. We’d chosen each of our courses a month before the day so, at the time of booking the table, The Crown knew what would be needed.I chose a starter of Prawn Cocktail – which was delicious. My main course was Turkey with all the usual accompaniments – superb. My and my companion’s desserts were Cheese and Port – oh dear! There was no port available because The Crown had run out. I could have said something assertive at the time but didn’t want to cause a fuss. We accepted sherry as a ‘replacement’ for the port. How could The Crown have run out of something that had been ordered a month previously?Check the day before you go to see that what you want is available. In hindsight, when I think about it, I could have asked for a different dessert but the option wasn’t forthcoming from the staff. This Christmas lunch cost £27.50.

Lovely pub and location but would not recommend the restaurant at all. £7.50 for a 'prawn cocktail' that consisted of four or five prawns, a teaspoon of sauce and a bowl full of lettuce ... complete rip-off. Sent it back, telling them I was disappointed and would like more prawns and sauce, but just got another one exactly the same :( someone needs a lesson in how to make a proper prawn cocktail. Duck was as dry as a bone, beer battered cod was pretty average, and chips were cheap, frozen French fries. Very expensive for below average pub grub... And just can't get over how dire my prawn cocktail was!

This is stereotypically terrible British pub food. I cannot use the word cuisine because that would be giving it undue credit. The price of the food does not match the cooking. The food that we had was overpriced and absolutely diabolical. The beefburger was like a rubber puck. The prawn tempura must’ve been rapidly defrosted from straight from the bag by bag bought at the local wholesaler.Even cheap ingredients to make nice food if you know how to cook what is clear is that the cook the kitchen didn’t know how - I don’t want to use the word chef because that is insulting good professional chefs out there. The person who cooked the food clearly had not had proper training from the culinary industry. It’s a shame that the food was so bad because the pub itself was very cosy and quaint a proper old fashioned english pub. After you read this if you don’t believe me try it for yourself.Quick Jay Rayner some material for your next review awaits you here.

The Crown is a fine historic building in a lovely village setting. I hadn't been there for thirty years or so and we decided to give a try for Sunday lunch for seven of us. The restaurant was very busy but not uncomfortably so. The menu was adequate rarher than inspiring. However the main courses we chose of roast beef and roast lamb respectively were well prepared and enjoyable. Service was friendly and efficient albeit a little slow. That would have rather annoying on a weekday but not an issue for us at the weekend. Overall it was good value for money (the main courses were about £18) and we may well book again.

Beautiful place. Friendly, with excellent service and for my £7.50 sandwich, I salivated over two slices of sliced bread, spread unevenly with marge, A dainty bite of the curling crust, I was able to luxuriate over a generous dollop of this amber nectar substance I rarely have the privilege of eating. My tongue finally discovered the smoked salmon - served - on the rocks. The twenty bistro lettuce accompanying the dish, with an un-identified dressing, completed my gastronomic experience for the afternoon. The last time I visited this pub, several years ago, it was no different. I would live in this place if the food could just improve. Please ...

I shared a whole duck with a friend and we thoroughly enjoyed it and the rest of the party had differnt duck or chicken dishes, all very happy with their choises. The staff were attentive and friendly and the surroundings lovely. The pub is beautiful, historic and friendly. The staff were lovely, the atmosphere relaxing and the drinks very nice. After such a lovely drink in the bar we ate in the restaurant, which was disappointing. The staff were great, but the food basic and expensive for what you got. The steak was fatty and gristly with very basic accompaniments, which for over £20, wasn't worth it. The pie was lovely but again the accompaniments disappointing both a tiny potato and veg portion on the side. The cooking was skilled, but the quality of food and effort in to the presentation and dish variety/offer leaves a lot to be desired for the price. We left hungry with no desire to get puddings after such disappointing mains. I'm rarely this underwhelmed but the food needs to match the excellence running through the rest of this pub.

The building and amazing historic frontage and interiors impress but it could be exceptional with a bit of investment and flair to make the very best of such a wonderful location. I visited the Crown Inn as I had to stay overnight for a business trip, this lovely inn is so sweet and quaint, kept to such a high standard and extremely comfortable and clean. The location is fabulous as are the staff who really go the extra mile.

Another very good Sunday lunch at the Crown. It must be the best in Surrey.

Just had a great meal consisting of light and crunchy tempura vegetables which were better than Marcus Wareings at the Berkeley. Delicious pink lamb rump from Loxwood with a great crispy pomme Anna (thinly sliced cooked in butter) and finished on frozen yoghurt and berries.

We stopped for a late lunch after a long walk in Petworth Park. It was busy but the staff were so nice and helpful and found us a great table! No trouble nothing was too much effort. I had the roast beef... i was slightly concerned after i ordered it that being so late.. the best meat was probably gone. NOT AT ALL!

I love The Crown, it is our local and all the staff are really welcoming and friendly. The food is also great with good value options for the kids. Drinks are pricey but seems to be way round these parts!

Hadn't been for a while - but up to expectations. The food was good but the burger was served in a cheap soft bap!

We booked a table in the restaurant for my mums Birthday. Good Sunday menu and friendly service. Food was hot and fresh and very tasty. Good sized portions. The pub is very clean and the toilets were also very clean. We will definitely return. Thank you Crown Inn

Lovely Saturday lunch: three generations: fifteen people and two dogs. Comfortably settled in a lovely space around one huge table. The varied menu offered something for everyone: personally I would recommend the pork belly and the plate of mixed nibbles to share was great too. Fish and chips were excellent and you need to be hungry as the portions are very generous. The staff could not have been nicer or more patient with us all. It's a beautiful Inn warmly recommended.

As soon as you enter the Pub, you get a sense of how old and historical this place is. In the entrance hall, you can see a beautifully decorated 1760 sedan chair, one of only two in England.

We stayed for two nights at the hotel as part of a wedding party at nearby Ramster Hall. The room was comfortable, breakfast was excellent and service was first class.

Having had lunch here several times in this superb pub/hotel, we were determined to stay and eat dinner here despite not living that far away. We were not disappointed: the place is spacious, loads of character, food and wine were good with knowledgeable staff and although the pub is very grand the evening crowd was surprisingly very local. The dining room, which we practically had to ourselves (most diners preferring the more informal bar area) is a feast for the eyes with plastered ceiling and stained glass windows; you can admire again in the morning with a very good breakfast. My only regret was not staying in one of the Tudor rooms which although very expensive for a rural location had much more atmosphere than the rather small "superior doubles" which at £120 was a bit eye-watering-so suggest waiting for a deal on one of the hotel or other websites. Anyway great time was had and we are already saving up for a stay in more ancient rooms.

The Crown is a very old Inn so it is little surprise that it is blessed with a cosy ambience. This cosiness is enhanced by the comfortable traditional furniture, heavy drape curtains and a delicious open fire place. The Inn cleverly offers a seemless mix of a bar that sells good quality food and a restaurant; in addition there is another bar at the far end of the building which is largely populated by 'locals' and is a fun place to be when there is an International sports event on TV. Since the menu is not a mile long, as is the case in far too many venues, it seems likely that the food is fresh rather than deep frozen. In fine weather it is possible to sit on the verandah that overlooks the beautiful village church and green. Dog owners will be pleased to know that their animals are welcomed except in the main restaurant. In all the Inn offers a warming experience.

What better place to enjoy a light snack lunch with open fire, friendly attentive staff and good lager. A real 'pub' atmosphere too. An historic building, oak-beamed and full of detail. Gorgeous.

It had been 34 years since I last visited here. As I was unexpectedly in Sussex, I decided to make a detour en route back to the Cotswolds. It was worth the detour and worth getting back home late for.

Very pleasant, comfortable restaurant with stained glass windows, panelled walls and comfortable chairs. A reasonably diverse menu, but most importantly well cooked , well presented tasty food. Very friendly knowledgeable staff. It's not a complaint, maybe it's an accolade, but during the meal the staff didn't pay us much attention and didn't seem to notice when we were finished. Maybe they were busy in another room. i repeat - not complaining we were left to our own devices with uninterrupted conversation.

Lovely setting. But...... Overpriced, poor service, awful food and didn’t want to know when I complained about my bottle of white wine being warm! Chefs trousers were SO filthy I wanted to be sick. Never again!!

This was my first time at the Crown, and you can't beat the beautiful location. The food is very straightforward pub grub, slightly expensive for this but generous portions. I had a delicious burger, and my companion was very pleased with her scampi. We shared the honey and mustard glazed sausages to start, which were also yummy! Waitresses very sweet and cheerful, if somewhat vague.

Bellissimo pub che ti porta in un'altra epoca. Interni raffinati, cibo e bevande di alta qualità e servizio impeccabile. Se mai dovessi ripassare dalle parti di Chiddingford ci tornerò certamente. Consigliatissimo.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch sitting outside this wonderful old inn. A historic building set on a pretty village green opposite the church. The only downside was looking out on quite a few cars. Lunch was very good; I thought the hot smoked salmon salad was tasty and nicely presented.

5 out of 5! First visit, lively and friendly. Fantastic, tasty, hot fresh food. Starters, calamari, and chicken wings were delicious. Mains, kofte kebab, and pork kebab are also excellent. Buffalo fries were stunning. The two veggies with us had superfood salad and a sweet potato dish, which I was assured were really good!!! Good choice of beer and wine and delightful staff!! Cost us about £72 per couple, including drinks and gratuity, which I considered very acceptable for the evening we had! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We will definitely be going back! 👍🏽

Lovely woodland setting with very pleasant outside seating. But the cafe facilities were rather poor. Two "hot" sausage rolls were taken from a cold display case and were barely warm. a "cream tea" came in an assortment of pre-packaged plastic containers. This plus a couple of coffees came to over £20. Along with a disappointment with the arboretum itself, this did not make for a good day. We are not quite sure why the NT is even managing Winkworth, let alone currently expensively now expanding its facilities.

Disappointed, chicken burger was 70% lettuce, hardly any Asian slaw :( typical takeaway restaurant being tight and overloading on the cheapest ingredients :(

Lovely pub, a little gem. Located in the middle of a busy roundabout. All staff very friendly and welcoming, great food and choices. Prices are excellent, very reasonable. Here to celebrate mum’s 70th Birthday and the team were very helpful and welcoming and great communication via email. I would highly recommend this pub to everyone as it certainly met all expectations and more.
