We went as a group of 14 for lunch, having pre-booked and chosen from the menu in advance. Everything arrived promptly and exactly as ordered and was delicious. Thankyou for looking after us all so well, including the 2 coeliac gluten-frees. Good choice on the menu, I had a cider with my meal, others had beers, wines, soft drinks etc. Everyone was happy, parking was easy and plentious.

A fabulous, rustic country pub with open fires and quarry tiled floors. Lovely high backed wooden settles and horse brasses complete the look. Dogs and wellies welcome. We came here for Sunday lunch and were very happy. Mum and I had the venison ragout (felt a little bit guilty after seeing a huge herd of beautiful deer at Stonor Park) with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and roast vegetables. My husband and daughter had the roast beef with all the trimmings. Generous portions prevented us from attempting the puddings but we had a very decent coffee instead. Service was relaxed and friendly and we felt we could happily have sat by the fire all afternoon and been very welcome. It’s a lovely drive out and we were glad to find the pub as good as ever.

Married here end of November and it was amazing. Such a gorgeous, cosy barn/ pub perfect for a woodland/ rustic themed wedding. Adjoining pub was handy for guests to get drinks and relax, whilst the barn was perfect for the ceremony, dinner and evening disco. Lucas was very handy and informative, and was helpful in ensuring everything was ok before the wedding day. He and the team worked non stop to have everything run smoothly on the day itself and ensure me and my partner enjoyed ourselves without worry. Would highly recommend for a rustic wedding for around 60-80 guests! As for the food, it was delicious. The 3-course wedding breakfast was superb and everyone commented on how tasty the food was (a starter corn beef hash, brisket of beef for mains and a brownie chocolate pudding). There were also bacon baps and chips in the evening which went down well. Me and my wife got a fry up the next morning which was very hearty and plentiful, and tasted perfect. Just to add also, me, my wife and my family visited here a few months before the wedding just for dinner one night. Again, the food, personnel and service was sublime and the pub was quaint and cosy, so it’s not just wedding goggles for my review.

We've been visiting The Crown with family for a walk and lunch for years. It's an idyllic spot, with a lovely sunny terrace in the summer and roaring fires in the winter. But sadly we won't be going back for Sunday lunch. Food was just deeply average school dinner level roast. Chewy crackling, a pile of smashed up veg, undercooked roast potatoes, packet style thin gravy over everything - no sense of home cooking or care. Service waa impeccable and very friendly, but sadly couldn't make up for the low grade lunch.

My wife and I stopped off at the George Inn on Saturday 6 July 2019 for lunch. From the outside the place looked fabulous but what a disappoinment when we went in and looked at the menu - only options available were sandwiches and ploughmans. We opted for the cheese ploughmans. What we got was a plate of soggy salad leaves, two bits of stale bread, two very thin slices of cheese and a bit of pickle all for the princely sum of £9.00. Definately not value for money or the quality expected. The salad was replaced but smelt a bit off - needless to say we will not be back or recommending this establishment.

My partner and I decided to go here last minute and what a beautiful spot. We were immediately impressed with the staff who were smart, helpful, friendly and very welcoming. We ordered our food and a little while after ordering were told it would be 5 minutes longer than it should be due to a problem in the kitchen. We didn’t mind a short wait but the food took nearly an hour to arrive?? When it arrived my partners was wrong but quickly replaced. Unfortunately the roast pork was disappointing and badly presented and the burger was very uninspiring. We would likely give it another try but this, our first visit, was a let down.

I can't wait to go back and eat brunch outside later in the summer as well as try the evening food - this is such a great place to cycle or walk to for a bite to eat!

We just attended a wedding reception here. The couple had exclusive use of the pub for the day (and they got to stay overnight in the attached honeymoon cottage). There were 70 guests in total, which worked well with the space. The food (both the wedding breakfast and evening buffet) was excellent, served hot and in good time. Staff were friendly; facilities clean; plenty of parking. My only 2 grouses would be (1) it’s a cash only bar, presumably because it’s an internet dead zone...but we used to be able to use credit cards before WiFi came along and (2) if you want a cab in the evening you have to get a local taxi firm to come out from Henley-on-Thames. They charged £25 to take us less than 5 miles down the road.

Out for a walk and fancied a drink and a snack, so ordered a steak sandwich and fries to share with my wife. Expected it to be as described "4oz Rump Steak, Toasted Bread, Red Onion Marmalade, Whole Grain Mustard ". When it came it was an open sandwich with what appeared to be a pepper based salsa and a fried egg on top. I suggested to the server (the man who took my order who appeared to be in charge) that it was not what we'd ordered, but he confidently told me it was, so I initially assumed I'd misread the menu. The steak was quite tough and gristly anyway and we had to wait well over half an hour to get it . But having rechecked the menu, what is worst of all is that they thought it was OK to treat customers like that. Pretty insulting really.

We recently had lunch at the Crown, it was reasonably busy, as you would expect on a lovely sunny day. We could not sit out side due to a wasps nest, which had been treated - so hopefully that is not an issue now. We ordered the 3 cheese ploughmans and asked for more bread, which took approx. 20 mins to arrive, by which time we had finished - I know it was busy, but it does not take long to slice bread. The servers were nice but had no knowledge of the menu and when asked a simple question had to keep going back to get answers. The staff need training and briefing on the menus. We had a pleasant lunch, but the service let this place down.

Cannot tell you about the food but we were told the kitchen was closed, even though their said food served until 2:30pm. Admittedly it was 2:27 but I would have thought that they could have at least offered to serve us up a Ploughmans, after all how long does it take to put together a Ploughmans?? Somewhat disgruntled with our pleas falling on deaf ears, we went outside with our drinks only to be passed by a waitress taking out a ploughmans to another table! So again we asked and again we were flatly refused. At about 2:45 a chap who I assume to be the landlord (who refused us food) placed himself on the door presumably to deter anyone else from entering the pub as they close the bar at 3pm. Two minutes later the waitress approached our table asking if we would like anymore drinks!! Needless to say we won't be going back.

Firstly before I dive into a negative complaint I must say how good the young lad who served us was, extremely polite and professional. However I have been visiting this pub on and off for a number of years and have never been disappointed before today. Not really sure what's happened, maybe under new ownership, but the lunch menu choice for vegetarians is pretty limited so ordered a ploughmans. The description on the menu promises House Chutney, Warm Bread & Butter, Mixed Salad, Pickles, Apple, Soft Boiled Egg & a Mini Soup Cup. Firstly the ploughmans I received had NO chutney at all and I have only realised it was missing after revisiting the website menu this evening. The bread appeared to be lightly toasted packet white bread, the mixed salad was a few leaves in dressing, the apple was wafer thin slices maybe adding up to approximately 1/4 of a small apple (if that!), the boiled egg was good and the soup cup ok, although there is no description at all of what the soup actually is... oh and a tiny sliced gherkin. The brie was good but far too much (two big slices) compared to the rest of the ingredients on the plate. No further salad vegetables, tomatoes, pepper, onion, etc included. It seems like a modern take on a ploughmans however if that is the case then it really needs to be done with a little more thought out ingredients and finesse... oh and include everything mentioned on the plate (no chutney). Perhaps offer some artisan or homebaked bread, maybe a mixed salad, get rid of the soup cup, it really has no place on a ploughmans plate! After years of visiting here I would be inclined to only visit for a drink in future whilst out walking, I certainly wouldn't entertain having lunch. The sandwich selection is also very disappointing only offering a choice of 3 different ones. All in all a very disappointing visit to one of my previously favourite venues when walking in The Chilterns.

Sadly, our original destination The 5 Horsehoes at Maidensgrove was closed for a private function. So onwards to The Crown. We were a bit disappointed that there were only sandwiches and fries or a ploughman's on offer, ESPECIALLY as other diners seemed to be having fish and chips delivered to their tables. The sandwiches were nice enough and the pavlova dessert made up for the lack of hearty pub food... but only just. The staff were a little disorganised we do tend to get a bit annoyed when the third member of staff comes over to ask if everything is ok with the meal...Not bad but it's not at the top of our "Saturday Cycle For a Pub Lunch" league table.

The Crown is a beautiful pub. The menu is more that of a gastro than regular pub but, having said that, it looks superb and would be ideal for diners who want to have a leisurely lunch or, better, upmarket dinner. Our group of 20 walkers pre-ordered lunch but on arrival the server was most disgruntled that there were more than ten of us (although all 20 of us had pre-ordered). Despite pre-ordering it took just under one hour from our arrival for our meals to be served and, quite frankly, most were very disappointing. The sandwhich menu is very limited. I ordered a smoked salmon sandwich which had lots of bread, a scraping of cream cheese and slivers of cucumber and smoked salmon. Very poor value. The burger ordered by another in our party was overlooked and dry. The ploughman's ordered by several had plenty of cheese but toasted bread and, again, was not well rated. I am sure this pub is delightful for dinner and celebratory meals but it is not at all geared up for walking groups.

After a few years away, as we were 'passing the door', my wife and I thought we'd pop in for lunch. It was a Friday and preparations were under way for yet another wedding celebration in the pub's barn, and unique cottage accommodation.Alas, we hadn't noticed the snacks on the back of the 'proper' menu, from which we both opted for the 'Fish of The Day' (Haddock) with Tartare sauce, mushy peas and chips, which turned out to be large and 'chip size'. Delicious. Together with two glasses of rose at only £3.30, a couple of puds and a cafetiere for two, our bill came to a very reasonable £47.50.We shall definitely be returning soon - even if it's just to re-inspect the picture of old motorbikes, some of which I actually owned, which still hangs on the wall!Just what an English pub should be.

We have always loved this place but we were extremely disappointed with our recent lunch. It was a couple of weeks ago now and it's taken me this long to write the review simply because I didn't want to write the truth about how disappointed we were. The pub was relatively empty and we only had a main course each. Burger plus fish and chips. No effort had gone into the presentation. The burger was very dry and fries luke warm. The burger had some gherkins in that were just horrible and ruined the flavour, should have been rinsed off before putting in the burger. My husband had more impressive looking fat chips but they were dry as well with no crisp to them. The fish was apparently OK. The food felt somewhere between pre-prepared and freshly prepared food....leaning more on pre-prepared. Service was just OK, nobody asked if our food was OK. Really am hoping that it was just an off day. Maybe the chef wasn't there?! And really hoping it's not a permanent way of improving profits by sacrificing quality of food. Seen this done many times and it never works. Looking forward to returning and hopefully things will be back to normal.

Four of us tried The Crown on the recommendation of a friend. The food was very good and overcame the other shortfalls. With more management this place could be exceptional. To start with our waiter told us there were only 2 starter choices left. And then told us quite a few mains were also unavailable. While this did prevent us from selecting and then being disappointed, it hardly demonstrated good management. We chose a guest draught beer (out of the choice of two beers) only to be advised shortly afterwards that the guest beer had run out! Had we had more time, we might well have left at this point.Generally, the ambience was poor. A little bit of attention to the décor and dining tables and chairs would go a long way to improve the experience. The waitresses were pleasant enough but did not look as though they enjoyed their work. Having said that, the food was very good and we left reasonably happy with our first visit.

It must be getting on for 10 years since we last ate at The Crown, though I've stopped for a beer on bike rides through Stonor valley. We used to go a fair amount and I can't really remember why we stopped. But after a lovely meal on Saturday night I'm regretting that we've not been back before. We had the mushrooms and the chicken liver pate for starters, both very good. Mains were rump of lamb, hake and fish (pollock) and chips. Well prepared, tasty and generous portions - with no room for puds! Will certainly be back. One regret was that some of the original local photos that used to be on the wall in the bar have been replaced by generic pub decor. It would be nice to see some local flavour back on the walls. And possibly a wider choice of local beers.

We dropped by for lunch a couple of weekends ago and although busy found the staff helpful and polite, we were told there was a small wait for the food which was to be expected but it in fact came out quicker than expected and was excellent. Would recommend for anyone wanting a great meal in a traditional English pub. Also note beers are very well kept. Good find!

We were travelling in the area for 2 days and came across this pub for lunch - to be told (not politely informed) there would be a lengthy delay before there was an opportunity to even place a lunch order. In other words - we don't want your custom!.

Arrived with 13 friends on a bike tour to be greeted with a rather hostile 'it'll be 30 minutes until you can have a menu". Even if there were mitigating circumstances a more friendly welcome would've prevented us deciding to cycle on to the next village. I'm amazed that this pub is so successful it can turn down £200+ worth of business!

Or so it seemed. Had taken a wrong turn at the top of the hill and was looking for somewhere to turn around on a long windy down hill road and found this great pub/restaurant. Very friendly staff and had a wonderful lunch of the salmon and cod fishcakes (starter) but served as a main. Really delicious. Staff very friendly and for what seemed an out of the way place was obviously well known and busy for a Saturday lunchtime. Dogs are allowed in parts of the pub.

Revisited recently after a long cycle up the hill from Turville and had a very nice Sunday lunch and local ale. Nice, laid back staff doing their jobs properly.More of a dining terrace than a beer garden - the pub is in the middle of nowhere with a simple (but odd) view of field and woods. It's a little pricey compared to other pubs doing the same quality.

On our way to Stonor Park and saw this splendid building, went inside for Sunday Lunch and the food and service were equally splendid. Opted for main courses and desserts and, speaking for myself, the roast beef and the sticky toffee pudding were excellent. The service is slick and pleasant and we will make an effort to visit shortly.

Nice location we visited for Sunday lunch - the place was moderately busy but we were told to take a seat and there would be a delay until they would take an order (!!) presumably to level out service as the kitchen was temporarily closed. We were clearly incovenient !!tWe stuck with it and the food was good, well cooked and nice portions - not exceptional though. Worth visiting during the week or Saturdays as I dont; think Sunday lunch is a good judge of many pubs,.

I was bridesmaid for a wedding held at The Crown and stayed in their self-catering cottage. The wedding was a success- the barn was beautiful (though a little stuffy in the heat) and the staff were friendly and helpful. The garden areas (front and back) are both lovely and great for photos. I'd definitely recommend it for a wedding venue. The cottage was also very sweet, quaint and cosy, however a bit dated with some questionable décor- we felt it could be done a lot better. This is also supposed to be the wedding night accommodation (the bride&groom were staying elsewhere and offered the cottage to us) but it's not very romantic- the bedding felt a bit like your Grandma's! Lovely four-poster though. The facilities in the cottage are very good- lots of fresh towels and bed linen, TV&DVD player (no DVDs), toiletries, iron and board, plenty of hangers etc. They also left us some food to get us started, which was nice- bread, butter, milk, cereal, juice, tea and coffee. The fridge is a quite small if you're staying for more than a couple of days. The location is also good. A very easy 15 minutes from Henley, around 20-30 minutes from Oxford. Absolutely no mobile phone signal but free wi-fi is accessible in the pub, garden and from some parts of the cottage.

The crown has been a favourite of mine for many years. We went for Saturday lunch, my starter consisted of 4 prawns that were over cooked and rubbery, it equated to over £1.50 each prawn! My main was a salad, again the portion was small, the chargrilled chicken could easily have come straight out of a supermarket packet. My partner ordered the burger, it was supposed to come with alioli, but no apology come with its absence. Finally the cheese was very ordinary. My favourite place to eat has gone downhill. Such a shame.

We arrived at 2:45pm and they stop service at 3pm. No food other than sandwiches as they had started clearing up. Ok, fair enough. So we went for the roast beef, tomato and horseradish, what we got was fat, gristle and no tomato. The bread was lovely. I had to return mine. No apology, offer of alternative just nothing. Waitress came out twice and looked the other way. Really very disappointed:(

We saw The Crown on our way to Stonor and decided to have lunch on our way home. The Crown is a very interesting building and the interior is lovely and cosy, i imagine on a cold winters day it would be very snug with the fires lit. As it was today was a warm day and we opted to sit outside. The menu was a great selection but we already had our mind on Roast Beef. Service was swift and with a smile and we both enjoyed the beef and accompaniments. The celeriac puree was a nice touch and the gravy delicious. Sadly we had no room for desert, however what i had seen on our neighbouring table they looked very good indeed.

My husband and I visited The Crown Inn on Wednesday evening. This pub is in such a gorgeous old building, in a fabulous setting! Plenty parking. Friendly attentive service, beautiful home cooked food, my husband thought his Leek & Potato soup was one of the best he had ever tasted! My starter of Scotch Egg was divine! Cooked to perfection, that is exactly how Scotch Egg Sausagemeat should look and taste around the egg in this dish. Our mains of Burger and Asparagus, Leek & Broad Bean Risotto were delicious! We shared a Steamed Chocolate Pudding with Chantilly Cream and Gin Soaked Cherries...perfect end to a perfect meal, which was washed down with a Sauvignon Blanc for me and Prosecco for my husband. Highly recommend, plan to visit on a "Fish Market Friday" some time in the near future

Best meal yet. Tried the Fishmarket Friday menu, and it was exceptional. The sea bass melted in your mouth, and my husband said his mackerel starter was to die for! The desserts were absolutely delicious too - a far cry from many pub desserts which can be stodgy, these were interesting, tasty and not at all heavy. Some interesting new wines on the wine list too! We recently called into The Crown in Pishill on a Sunday afternoon after visiting Grey’s Court. Arriving just before 3pm we learnt that the pub closes at 3.30 pm on Sundays, but that still allowed us time to have two rounds of drinks. There were a number of tables taken with diners for Sunday lunch so we sat in the small, but comfortable bar area. The barman was very friendly and as they had an Oxfordshire Beer I had never previously heard of before ( Loddon ) so I tried that. It was OK, but nothing special. Mrs FB2000’s Pinot Grigio was fine.Outside there is quite a large patio with a number of tables, and there is plenty of parking space. We look forward to returning again and maybe trying the food.

I reviewed The Crown Inn last November and gave it a glowing review. Well I went there last night with a friend - we were doing a long cycle ride. The food was absolutely brilliant and, as usual, the ambience was great. Just low level music, warm and pleasantly lit. - so relaxing, specially after a long bike ride! The service was as ever very good. I had roasted partridge and parsnip tart and other veg. It was superb and great value - only about £16.00 I think. This place is still an absolute gem and I cannot understand why it's not more busy. Perhaps it was that for a while they had a rather poor chef and manager, who thankfully are no longer there and the existing chef is wonderful.

The Crown Inn has been a huge favourite of mine for about 12 years. Then, a while back the standard of the food dropped radically, with them serving up what can only be described as lack-lustre pub grub. However, last Saturday we stayed at their delightful cottage right next to the Inn, which I would really recommend to anyone and it's very good value at only £80.00 midweek. We decided to have dinner there because the owner assured me that he has a new manager and more importantly, a new chef. Both our meals were great - wonderfully tasty and beautifully presented and the service was, as ever, very good. This was not 'pub grub', it was full-on stylish fine dining but with good portions. The Crown Inn is wonderfully isolated in an absolutely beautiful part of The Chilterns and it remains to me one of the most charming and great places to dine, whether it's lunch or dinner. And I think that for the quality of the food now it is great value.

Had a fantastic meal with the family. The pub is great with open fires and a superb timber panel bar. Staff are fantastic, attentive, polite and always smiling. The food was gorgeous, from the soup, to the rabbit, duck and steak, perfectly cooked, especially the steak which I can be known to be fussy about. The head chef even made some chicken dippers for one of the kids even though not on menu. Would recommend, not only if your just passing but as somewhere to go for a great meal anytime. Prices were reasonable too for drinks and the food.

Such a treat to eat in a beautiful pub that hasn't been "updated" to within an inch of its life like so many others that have had their soul removed in the process of "re-decorating"! The pub has a fantastic atmosphere and is cosy and comfortable with lovely fires. There were 4 of us eating including a vegetarian and we all had something different and all thought our food excellent. I especially liked the fact that a jug of iced water with lemon slices was put on our table without us having to ask for it. Nice touch. The service was friendly and very efficient.

After a terrible experience at another local restaurant (we walked out) it was nice to find a welcoming & friendly establishment. We asked if they were serving food as there was a large wedding in progress and we were told so nicely that they were. We chose our own table a pleasant young lady took our drinks order and we were given menu's lots of choice. We did have to remind the waitress about our drinks but a group from the wedding walked just after us. The food was excellent and presented nicely and tasted good (portions were large be warned if you have a small appetite) We had coffee after our meal served in a cafetiere with complimentary fudge.... Nestled in a valley in the Chilterns, the Crown has been dispensing beer and hospitality for hundreds of years. Lucas, the owner, makes the place hum and tick. Service is charming (a lovely Estonian girl, and a beautiful girl who lives in the village and is a student at nearby Shiplake College), food is excellent and generous. This is a gastro pub without the pretentiousness and expense. There is a large patio / terrace and ample parking. Wedding parties are a feature of summer Saturdays (they have a large converted barn) but somehow this doesn't affect the service at the bar or in the restaurant. In the cosy dining room there is a fire in winter. My cricket team come here after playing at adjacent Stonor, and are never disappointed by the beer or the speed with which it is delivered to hand. Unlike more snooty pubs nearby Lucas is happy to provide hungry cricketers with plates of crispy chips. My American cousins visited and thought it straight out of Downton, exactly what an English country pub should be, low beams, welcoming hearth, a smile behind the bar and excellent food unsullied by modish fads like drizzle and froth.
