We were actually here for a Wake. I have been here several times and found it to be a very friendly little pub. The staff had put together a reasonably versatile buffet for the Wake, too much white bread, but that's personal choice. The lemon drizzle cake was outstanding. I was pleased that the barmaid suggested that the surplus food should be taken to the bar to be shared rather than wasted.

We called into this pub my husband and son and his girlfriend and I for a drink on the way back to our hotel after a very nice meal. The barmaid asked for I.D when my son tried to order drinks not from him but his girlfriend? My son is 25 and his girlfriend is 24 in January but because she didn’t have I.D she refused to serve him. I stepped in and suggested I buy the round of drinks? But she refused and we had to leave! There were 2 people in drinking at the time… I’m sure the manager or owner isn’t aware what is going on? We went to the Half Moon and was very welcomed there!

We popped in here whilst visiting Melton Mowbray for what was going to be a quick pint. We left 5 hours later having had a warm welcome from the bar staff and locals along with some great beer. Highly recommended if you in the area.

Even though we live in Melton, me and my partner have only just started coming here regularly for food and it’s always been spot on! Sometimes they don’t have what we want but we’re never disappointed with our second choice from the menu! The staff are also very friendly and polite!.

Enjoyed a day in Melton Mowbray and discovered The Crown as we headed back to the Railway Station. We visited on a Tuesday which is market day in Melton so everywhere was quite busy. I enjoyed a pint of Everard's, my partner a glass of Chardonnay while we studied the menu. Unfortunately, a few dishes were off, no doubt reflecting their popularity. I chose the Ploughman's lunch, much to the envy of the guy on the next table. My partner chose the sausage and mash, commenting that they were "proper" sausages! Excellent food, drink and atmosphere. No music, no television - bliss! We will return without a doubt. Might be an idea to check which days they do food, the menu suggested it was just Tuesdays and weekends.

This friendly pub offers a Sunday roast for £8.95. There were three choices of meat, and I chose the chicken. I was surprised to see that it came with all the following: Yorkshire pudding, sage and onion stuffing, lovely gooey roast potatoes, one large crisp roast potato, brussels sprouts, shredded cooked red cabbage, carrots, peas AND broccoli in sauce. Amazing abundance, and all cooked as if home-made. The roast potatoes were the best. Staff and customers were all charming and the log fire was blazing away. What a fantastic place.

Good service, good beer, good food. Friendly atmosphere. We recently changed local pubs from a badly run one to the crown & the landlord & staff have been very welcoming. I also go with my friends when not playing darts

Lovely selection of beers and good menu. With notice they will cater for vegans and those who want gluten free options. It was a boiling hot Wednesday and I had a Melton chicken baguette. It was lovely! Chicken in a warm baguetted with a warm Stilton sauce. Friendly lady serving. Enjoyed my visit and would return. Beer garden looked a real sun trap and relaxing.

Took my mum here to celebrate her birthday. I had the small English breakfast, she had the pie of the day which was chicken, and my dad had a ploughman's lunch. We were all really pleased with our meals and it only came to £22 for 3 meals plus drinks! The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Overall very pleased with the visit and would recommend to anybody!

A great place to eat when visiting the Melton Mowbray market on a Tuesday. With local bus stops right outside the door it makes it easy to have a drink and not drive.Typical pub food, but of good quality and served quickly. Pleasant staff.

went for sunday lunch to give it a try. ordered garlic mushrooms as a starter and only 4 mushrooms were on the plate. I then had beef for main course which was acceptable but with only 2 roast potatoes and no other potatoes came with it, also the carrots were hard and the red cabbage was smothered in vinegar.it was hot but overly priced for what you got.

We met up for a family meal at the Crown. It was not our first visit so we were looking forward to good food at a reasonable price. The table was reserved in the main bar and we were the only arty in there, so it was pleasant and cosy.We had to wait a long time for the meal, which was OK but nothing special. My Hunters chicken was not as expected as I always make it with melted cheese, this just had a pile of grated cheese stuck on top of some overdone chicken. However, the price was very reasonable so we should not have expected too much. The big let down was the bar staff. A pleasant enough young woman who absolutely reeked of stale cigarette smoke - very off putting when she leans by the place your meal in front of you.

Called in with a friend for a bite to eat after visiting Melton Cattle Market. Ordered 2 roast dinners and 45 minutes later we asked if our food would be much longer arriving. When it finally arrived we were rather confused as to what the large black objects were on our plates so we asked the waitress to which she replied with a smile I don't know I think its your roast potato. To say these were black is an understatement this must have been visible to the cook so quite why you would send them out is mind boggling. I know it was only £5.50 but come on you should not be sending out such obviously badly burnt items as this. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Nice enough place but we ordered two Ploughmans Lunches at £6.95 each. The menu stated pork pie, ham and cheddar or Stilton. Well, the plastic was a thin slice of preformed plastic ham and I dont know why they bothered putting it on the plate. The pie, and remember we are in the home of Melton Mowbray pork pies, was a quarter, yes, a quarter of a small pork pie. I have to say the Stilton was delicious though. Why dont they offer a Pork Pie Ploughmans and give you a proper portion or a Stilton Ploughmans, it would be much much better. So, as in the title, dont rush there unless they alter the menu!

Looking for an inexpensive pub lunch and found it at The Crown. We chose 2 for £9.00, unfortunately they didn't have our first choice ofmpie of the day as sold out. Hubby went for sausage egg chips and peas and I opted for cottage pie. Unlucky (again) in my choice as that had sold out too! Was offered steak pie at no extra cost. The guy behind the bar was very pleasant and food arrived piping hot and well presented. Good honest cooking with good portion size. Jug of gravy (more than enough) . We enjoyed our meals and would certainly return there again next time we are in Melton. Cannot comment on deserts as too full from main meal but a group of women (about12) were also dining and they chose deserts which looked delicious. If u don't want to break the bank but want some good grub try The Crown.

Popped in today, after looking for a different pub and giving up, so glad that we did go in, got a friendly welcome by two men working there, ordered food and a couple of pints of the real ale. After being asked about sauce sat and waited about 15 mins for our meals, they came out and we were very impressed, excellently cooked and really tasty ingredients, and roast potatoes like we've never had before. Yes it isn't as cheap as some other pubs but I would gladly chose this little gem and gladly pay that little bit more again. Looking forward to our next visit.

I have been using the Crown for some years and have occasionally eaten here in the past. I have to admit standards have been variable so an "average" verdict would have seemed fair. I do know that earlier this year the Crown suffered a traumatic and sudden change of licensee, immediately following which was a period of uncertainty and instability and I think likely your previous reviewer was unfortunate to hit this period. However, a permanent manager and team have now been established and things are picking up again. I write specifically because, for the first time ever, my wife and I stopped in for Sunday Lunch last week. We expected fair to good and would have been happy with that for convenience sake but we were both amazed. Standard fare yes, pork, beef, gammon or chicken and a selection of veg but that's where "standard" finished. The quality of veg and the standard of cooking was 5 star, no doubt! Gravy to die for, clearly fresh carrots, cooked to a perfection of tender but slightly al dente, peas which surely can't be fresh (can they? where would you get them these days?) but tasted like straight from the pod, perfect steamed red cabbage and topped off with cheese and leeks, which I don't like but wifey said were fantastic. Super meal, best pub Sunday lunch I have had in years. If all the food is going this way, the future looks good

My first review on Tripadviser and i'm sorry to say that it is a bad one! We called in for something to eat while shopping in Melton Mowbray to The Crown Pub on Burton street next to the church. We both decided to go for the Ploughman's lunch at just under seven pounds each rather than the meal on the two for a tenner offer as The Ploughman's Lunch sounded so good. I should have sent it back as soon as it came out The Stilton was brown around the edges and the bread was dry I have put better in the bin at home!. The "Hand Carved Ham" portion was so small it should have been put on one plate not both, and as Melton Mowbray is the "Rural Capital" of food and home to the best Pork Pies around the Chef must have searched far and wide in the local cash and carry outlets to find such a poor example for this Ploughman's Lunch. The barmaid was very apologetic when I told her my thoughts on our meal but there was no offer of a refund! My advise would be eat somewhere else.

The place looks good and it nice inside with entertainment but the food is not good at all we had two chicken wraps and baguette melts that were not melted or warm they were cold and also we had a even bigger breakfast with hashbrowns, sausage and bacon is cooked enough and my personal self had a mixed gril the gammon was bland with no taste and the chicken was stone cold and steak wasn't too bad but disappointed is a understatement and the service was poor we tried to get servers attention twice and was blanked and it just felt depressing it wasn't nice so this why I give this a 2 star this is a genuine review it isn't good for food.

I’ve visited The Royal Oak quite a few times, and it never fails to impress. The food, service, and atmosphere are consistently fabulous. Every visit is brilliant. I brought my family for Sunday lunch today, and we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Pat and Bini, the owners, are incredibly welcoming, which makes the experience even more special. I absolutely love this pub and can’t recommend it highly enough. A huge thank you to the entire team at the Royal Oak!

Rustic historic pub in the centre of Melton Mowbray, drinks priced reasonably and a lovely beer garden for when the weather is nice. Staff are friendly too, great atmosphere in the winter (very cosy and homely). Highly recommend if you're visiting Melton Mowbray and want to enjoy a nice drink in a traditional pub

We popped in for a drink on our wedding day between the ceremony and reception and it was one of our favourite parts of the day. They accommodated a large booking at short notice for our family to have Sunday lunch the following day and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was great and the staff and owners just lovely. We’ll certainly be back!
