Visited from out of area based on local recommendations on a Friday night. Staff were all very good/welcoming and the food itself was excellent. The large chicken parmo is massive!!…tender, juicy and crispy chicken with great sauce/cheese.

Great service from friendly and helpful staff, delicious food freshly cooked at decent prices. The chicken Parmo was awesome. I'd advise booking as it was really busy on a Thursday lunch time, probably due to the excellent food & service.

Staying in a cottage nearby we found this pub on Trip advisor and called for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. We didn’t book but was greeted by a lovely waitress who showed us straight to a table. Though they were busy they were quick to take our drink order and then our food order, explaining the menu and the specials. My partner had the mince pie and I had quiche. Both homemade, great portions and delicious, lovely friendly pub with welcoming staff. Wish we had found it earlier.

Called in for dinner whilst in the area. Staying at Judges Hotel nearby and had a walk. This pub is very nice, staff extremely friendly and welcoming. They were obviously very busy with all tables having a ‘reserved’ sign. They managed to squeeze me in. Can’t fault it. Food was excellent. Had the fillet beef stroganoff which was outstanding. Best meal I’ve had on holiday....YES Best meal I’ve had since lockdown ... yes Best meal I’ve had in 2020... possibly Best meal I’ve ever had .... would make shortlist From the minute I made booking earlier in day I could tell I’d made right decision - even on the end of the phone you can tell. On arrival they had my favourite beer on draught and this was just the start of everything good. Staff were fantastic, fillet steak was among the best I’ve ever had and I can be picky - dessert lovely too and sensibly priced (which isn’t always the case) Loved the little touches like the teddy bears protecting the seats that can’t be used due to Covid. I used to live nearby but now am over 200 miles away - if I was still local I’d be a weekly visitor at least. Incredibly good - thank you for rounding off my little holiday in the best possible way. This pub deserves success. OUTSTANDING

In my opinion, cookery of a higher standard than is usual in a gastropub. We dined there three nights ago and I was amazed at the quality of food provided. I had a Thai green salmon and shrimp curry, which came with rice and skinny chips. The curry was top notch, the rice beautifully done and the chips were the best I have had for years. Quantities were large and I was glad not to have had a starter course. The other three of us had other main dishes, and they all looked as if they really enjoyed them. They were Cajun Chicken, Baked Cod and Xmas Parmosian. The two ladies had desserts, my wife having a steamed strawberry jam sponge in a lake of vanilla custard - I would have loved to have helped her out with it but the custard was a shade too vanilla flavoured for my liking. They do not boast a wine list being an old fashioned pub but their wines (all 8 - 10 of them) are chalked up over the bar and sold by the glass. A bottle of the Pinot Grigio was provided and inexpensive as it was, proved to be a good standard, as well as a pint of John Smith's Magnet ale.

We definitely enjoyed our mains, no doubt there. Big generous portions, all home cooked. A gorgeous beef stroganoff and a chicken dish. I do think it's slightly overpriced comparing it to similar style pub menus in the area, particularly given the dining experience was pretty basic, which is where I think there is room for a little makeover. I love the open fire, but the pub could do with a touch up - decor is very old, however, I appreciate that could be it's charm for some. We thought the service was mediocre - we had to ask for plates to be taken, for the dessert menu, more drinks and asked twice for the bill, so eventually went up to the bar to pay. The baileys cheesecake was a bit tasteless, as was the chocolate brownie my friend had - ok but not 'wow' like the mains.Overall, worth a trip for the food, if your after a very casual pub dining experience, and you're not too bothered about the old style aesthetics and atmosphere.

This was a birthday meal and as a family we have eaten there several times. I ordered the chicken parmesan and left feeling ill. The chicken was thin, not sure where the Bechamel sauce was, and it was burnt. The staff are nice enough, but at the end of the meal if we enjoyed it, we gave our feedback. We asked if they had changed their supplier or Chef, to which they said no. We told them why we were disappointed and absolutely nothing was done. I've even rang as it was a birthday meal after all and again... Nothing. Massive mistake made on their part because a lot of my family are there and would have continued to, but never again. It wasn't even a one off, I was warned that 'something' wasn't right with the parmo, but thought everyone has an off night right? The chips that arrived were raw in the middle. None of us will go back now, especially after telling them at the time and once again on the phone. They were not interested. Birthday night ruined.

This was our second visit within twelve months and we were not disappointed. We opted for the Sunday Lunch with each of the party opting for a different meat with our 'yorkshires'. The general feeling around the table was the pork with cracking was the best on offer that specific afternoon (lamb, chicken and beef were the alternatives). The roast potatoes were crispy and made the ideal accompaniment alongside the broccoli and carrot veg. The portion sizes were generous, particularly the steak and ale pie, so there was no space for dessert on this visit.

They say that returning somewhere can often be disappointing and sometimes it is true. We last visited here for an evening meal back in February and I was pleased to write a good review. That was for a hearty warming evening meal in winter. Unfortunately this restaurant seems stuck in one mode. This was a summer lunchtime visit and was disappointing. Firstly, I really wish that the interior was more welcoming. Everything is dark and heavy and puts one in mind of a dour victorian parlour. And the food seems to follow suit. I know that it was Sunday lunch, but, if you were not in the mood for roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding or pastry then there were no choices except go hungry.I had the roast pork, which was actually very nice with crispy crackling and the carrots and broccoli were excellent, but the heaps and heaps of yorkshire puds and variois potatos were not only completely overwhelming but were also very disappointing. I cannot help but feel that the focus was on stuffing diners full of cheap carbs rather than investing in one additional slice of very good meat and that was an unfortunate error of judgement. Family at the table also had steak and ale pie which although stuffed with a good amount of filling also seemed to suffer from an excess of pastry. We were so bloated by the excess of starches that we declined pudding.

The Crown looks warm, cozy and welcoming from the outside, especially after dark.Another family favorite. We visited on the 13th July with a pre booked party of six people to celebrate the father in law's 85th birthday. Although we pre booked; walkins are welcome too. Also we arrived with an extra body, making seven people in all and this was handled in a professional manner; especially when one considers how popular and busy The Crown is.Once inside the Crown it is as warm, cozy and welcoming as it looks from the outside. The bar is patronised by many people from the village and one is greeted warmly by staff and locals alike. We ordered drinks at the bar and we were escorted to our table. There is a good choice of food from the menu with a specials board too. The Crown has a lovely atmosphere, it is warm, full of laughter and banter. The staff are great, being discreetly attentive, cheerful and helpful. We had a short wait for our food to be delivered. As usual it was fully up to expectations; being beautifully cooked and presented and of decent size too. The same goes for the puddings as well and to top it all off the price is very reasonable to boot.We have visited The Crown many times and I cannot recall one visit that can be described as disappointing. Therefore I haven't the slightest hesitation in recommending The Crown to anyone. Enjoy

Despite the fact that I have reviewed this establishment once before, I feel compelled to do so again. On Saturday I enjoyed the best steak fajitas that I have ever tasted in my entire life! The steak, was incredibly tender and succulent. I was provided with just the right amount of tortillas, along with wonderfully fresh bowls of guacamole, cheese, sour cream and salsa. The dish also came with a generous side order of skinny fries. As someone with a rather large appetite, I can report that I was more than satisfied with the portion sizes. Overall, the taste was wonderful, if not bordering on perfection. Despite it being a busy evening I did not have long to wait for my meal. The staff were friendly, efficient and courteous at all times. I was even provided with an extra large plate, to ensure I had a sufficient working area to construct the fajitas with ease. The meal was enjoyed in the company of good friends, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. In my experience, the staff at The Crown cannot do enough for their customers and always go the extra mile. I will return, very soon!

Had not visited for a time and returned with expectations. Ms declared that the fish was not as good as usual. But hey ho it has been fantastic in the past. Best lasagne I have had in a long time. Had to listen to a female in a party of 4 saying that they had to wait too long for their food and that they should have been told that the main chef was not on duty! Maybe they should have ordered earlier. and waited to try the food!! Staff handled this load of garbage superbly with a high level of professionalism. Worth a visit to test out my recommendation.

Food was ok, just basic pub grub really. Portions enormous, again typical of pub grub. Pub itself is dark and dingy, wouldn't rush back.

We are locals to the Crown and we have a friend who always demands to be taken here for a meal when he is visiting from The Cotswolds! I don't blame him because the food is delicious, plentiful and excellent quality! All staff are always welcoming even when the place is at its busiest and Chris always ensures the real ale is tip top (my husband likes a real ale!) which is a necessity for any good pub.We visit often and always recommend to our friends and family!

Wanted to go somewhere different for a change and decided on The Crown, one of the girls is a regular and I'd been before but not for a while, there were 7 of us. We were able to to straight to our table, good choice of menu, I had pork fillet with pancetta in a Marsala sauce, really nice, the pancetta made it quite salty so I just drank a "bit" more wine to compensate! We all really enjoyed our meals, two of us had the pork, one fish and chips (enormous fish!), one sea bass with fish cake, one beef stroganoff and two vegetarian stroganoff. Good food and good service, we weren't rushed out, even when we discovered we were the only ones left in the pub! Would recommend and will return.

I like to mix it up when it comes to food so a good solid pub supper is a joy every so often. And looking at the portions that arrived on our plates the 'every so often' is a necessity if you don't want instant obesity. Do not come here if you have eaten well earlier in the day, also, there is no way we could have eaten a starter and a main, the starters are a meal in themselves.Service was excellent and no gripes from staff that we had arrived very early for our reservation. My mother in law did not know which wine to have so our waiter very kindly bought her samples of the sauvignon and the chardonnay to choose from. This kind of brilliant service is not often seen in pubs and created a great impression on this first visit. The food as already mentioned is substantial, but it is also very well cooked and presented. I chose the trio of sausages on mash with onion gravy and a delicious 'slab' of black pudding. Very satisfying. Each of our party of five had different dishes and each and every one was polished off with relish. Unusually for our family, who are none of us every shy to try a pudding, none of us had room for an after. Which I am sure was a shame, as it would not be a great leap of faith to assume that they are as good as the mains. My husband is originally local and it seems as if the Crown used to be a bit of a dive, thankfully things move on and the Crown is now a great mixture of substantial foodie haven whilst it seems still retaining it's position as a social meeting place for locals. What a good mixture.

The Kirk, as I remember was a nightclub alongside The Crown, the ‘disco’ is now long-gone and The Crown remains as a testament to its longevity. This was the first visit to The Crown that included a meal in the restaurant. Parking is no issue, there’s plenty of space adjacent to the pub.It was a very noisy Friday night’s visit with the locals watching the rugby (6 Nations) on the TV. The wait staff were very attentive and the orders taken very quickly. We’d booked a table for 7:45 and arrived 15 mins early and were seated immediately. Orders were taken promptly but the food took an age to arrive. The food was typical British pub fayre, a very hearty meal and the most generous of portions. I would not recommend a starter before a main course unless you’ve not eaten for a week beforehand. I had the sea bass which was cooked to my liking The chips were delicious and there was no hint of the taste of fish on the chips due to a carry over residual taste in the frying oil that had previously been reported on TA. Not gourmet food, but an excellently executed pub meal of the tasty/hearty variety. Surprised though to see dogs in the restaurant!

Please don't use Open Table app at the top of this page to book. Call The Crown direct on 01642 780044.Despite contacting Trip Advisor and Open Table to ask them to remove the Open Table Booking system over 12 days ago they still haven't been able to do it! If you place booking using Open Table you will be making a booking for a different Restaurant 'Judges Hotel'. The confirmation you will see on screen will be from 'The Crown', however if you check your emails you will receive an email confirming your booking from 'Judges Hotel'. Don't ask me how this happened, I've been contacting Open Table and Trip Advisor almost every day for 2 weeks now and despite getting responses, they still haven't fixed the bug.

I have been coming here for years and have indeed written previous positive published reviews here on TA praising the food and staff at this restaurant. Today however I was really upset at the way myself and my young family were spoken to. We ordered our food from a very pleasant waitress who could not have done enough for us. The only problem I had was that my skinny fries tasted of fish. I made a simple statement attesting to this to a different server - a big blonde woman who's name I did not find out - and this is where it went down hill. Clearly this place does not get complaints because the way it was handled was insulting to say the least. Her response was " everything is cooked in the same oil". Err, ok. And? They still taste like fish...... she offered to replace them. All well and good. If she had left it there I would not be writing this review. On bringing the new batch her comment was " I tasted the chips myself and they did not taste of fish". Hello? What the **** has that got to do with it? Me and my hubbie both thought the fries were rank and simply wanted a new batch. We did not mention that my parmo also tasted of fish. I then pointed out that I felt that her attitude towards her paying customer was not helpful and was she implying that I was lying about the chips? Perhaps she thought I like to complain for the sake of it? Perhaps she thought I liked to eat my main and side dishes separate just for the hell of it? She then told me she has been managing restaurants for "years and did not need telling what to do". Well I BEG TO DIFFER. In all the years I have dined out I have never come across someone clearly so ready to have a go at a customer. Maybe she was having a bad day, I don't know. But it left us all feeling we wished we had gone somewhere else where we did not feel bullied unnecessarily for making a simple complaint that could have been rectified with a smile and an apology. I have recommended the Crown both through my previous reviews on TA and through my family and friends. Interestingly the experts say that a dissatisfied customer will tell 10 people about their bad experience versus 1 who will tell people about a good experience. This is something that this staff member should consider next time before they have an unjustified pop at someone who was a once loyal and very regular customer.

The Crown pretty much sets the standard for "country pub" food. Really good value for money, service can be a little slow at peak times but that's due to so many people wanting to eat/drink there. Overall I'd say it's brilliant.
