Stayed there for three nights with our cat. The rustic twin room, with its disused fireplace—like the whole establishment—was lovely and cosy. The staff, mostly ladies, simply could not have been more friendly, helpful, and accommodating! Breakfast was also great. I love these old English houses—so much character.

Absolutely terrible. Service non-existent. Nobody there to check us in at 5pm and when they finally arrived, no apologies, no interest in helping or making us feel welcomed. Overall, everything in a total state of disrepair. Far too expensive at £130 for the truly poor experience. It spoiled our stay at beautiful Wells. Do visit the town but don’t stay at The Crown

Only stopped in for a pint. Friendly staff. Sausage roll on the bar was delicious. The chef obviously knows his stuff. Good beer. Happy place and dog friendly. I'm sure if we had booked food it would have been 5 star.

I have been to Wells before, but, never had the chance to go into The Crown at Wells. Traditional wooden interior pub, which has a nice relaxing atmosphere. Staff are welcoming and friendly. The Somerset Rarebit was enough for a light bite and the Skin on Fries were nice and crispy.

Arrived for our Sunday lunch after booking online. Staff looked bemused as to our arrival, saying we couldn’t sit down yet as they were cleaning the floor, we offered if we should come back later and they said no we should wait. Ordered food and it came promptly. Roasts appeared large, however ended up being largely inedible. Potatoes looked and tasted like they were a couple of days old, meat was thick and fatty, and we were clearly served the Christmas leftover brussel sprouts. Some dishes were too hot to touch, and others were tepid at best. If it was a little cheaper you wouldn’t mind, but at nearly TWENTY FIVE pounds per roast it should be better than this. Have been for food before and it has been fine, but today was not a great experience.

We visited here with family. A very cozy and dog-friendly place. The selection of food and drinks is perfect for those who want to taste authentic English food. We were greeted by friendly staff, but taking orders seemed quite slow, but this may have been due to the heavy traffic. They offer a generous amount in each portion and you don't have to worry about salting or over-seasoning the otherwise tasty food. (Although - according to reports - this is typical here) The dessert selection is also typically English, but the cookies here are too sweet for my taste. With all this, we had a great time. I recommend everyone to visit the place even for a good "Sunday roast".

A 3-course dinner in the Restaurant at the Crown at Wells was excellent, with superb dishes overall but especially of note was the brilliant Game Terrine starter, and a lovely steak of Venison, and a yummy Lemon and Orange Posset with shortbread.

We were in Wells for a morning and looking for somewhere to have a coffee and thought we'd try this place as they had a board outside saying they were open for breakfasts, coffee and cake. Once inside the place appeared to be deserted so I rang the bell at reception. Someone shouted hello but didn't trouble to walk to us so we walked to them! Spoke to two different staff members who both seemed rather confused and put out to have customers and were debating where we could sit (the place was empty!). When I said "we're only after coffee and cake" the response was "oh we don't do cake". So much for the sign outside! At that point we decided to go elsewhere as it seemed more trouble than it was worth. Really felt we'd inconvenienced them by going in but we won't bother again. Not recommended.

We popped in during a short visit to Wells. We then popped in again the following day. It's a cosy place with great staff, serving various hot and cold drinks. Food is also served. We didn't sample that so can't comment. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Accessibility is very poor. It is an old building with low ceilings and narrow doorways. There is a small ramp to the door but it was a very tight squeeze for wheelchairs. Large chairs would not fit.

Lovely old pub/hotel with plenty of character right in the market square. Stunning views of the Cathedral. Parking available but awkward. Efficient welcome and friendly bar service. However, the room was a slight disappointment. Booked a double, ended up with a large room on the 2nd floor (14) overlooking the square but kingsize bedding over 2 singles pushed together, leaving a hard lump right down the middle of the join. This resulted in lacklustre sleep on both our parts and aches and pains the next day. The bed didn't have a headboard (see photo) just placed up against the wal. The matress of the single was infact comfortable (if we'd have slept alone), which goes against all reasons for requiring a double! Reception staff (late afternoon) couldn't do anything about it as 'fully booked' - not even offered an apology or any recompense and appeared quite non fussed. Perhaps a description should state the possibility of twin beds converted or even having a double mattress available when required. On checkout the next morning, the staff were a lot more apologetic. As for the parking, the spaces are narrow or at awkward angles. We ended up against a wall and had to carry out a 20 point manoeuvre to enter it and even worse to leave. May have been better if earlier guests had parked sensibly. Not the hotels fault however maybe better for the future to reduce the number of marked parking bays available.

I've given The Crown a low rating because of the bed and how it ruined our stay last night, the staff were good and the hotel is in a great setting. When we booked some weeks ago we booked a double room but when we got to The Crown yesterday we found that it was a twin room and The Crown had pushed the two single beds together and thrown a sheet over the two matresses so that it looked like a double bed. Upon discovering this we spoke to the manager but there were no free rooms so we had could not be moved. In the middle of the bed where the edges of the two single mattresses met was ridiculously hard and uncomfortable and we both had a terrible sleep. It really spoiled the experience and impacted the rest of our mini break because this morning we were so tired we decided just to go home instead of following through with our original plans. I would suggest to The Crown that they keep a spare double mattress in storage and when they need to push the single beds together they swap the two single matresses for a double allowing their guests to experience a comfortable bed and a good nights sleep

Disappointing, but friendly and welcoming staff. Great location but our room was very small and hot with no way of adjusting the temp. We did not have a wardrobe and hot-water supply temperamental. Evening meal was poor with the fish from the fish and chips clearly having been fried many times over. At breakfast, there were the same chips on the floor from two nights previously. We cleared them up ourselves in the end. We would have pointed these issues out if we had been asked how our stay was when we checked out.

The Crown has accommodation as well as a bar and restaurant, we stayed for one night and also had an evening meal there. We were warned that the car park was small and narrow by The Crown and this we found out to be true, probably the worst pub car park we have ever encountered, managed to park without losing any paint on our car. Check in was straight forward and easy, staff were blunt, not that friendly but efficient. The evening meal turned out to be the highlight, the waitress was very friendly & helpful. Food was good I had a lamb chops which were perfectly cooked. Upstairs where the rooms are is a bit like a rabbit warren. Our room was old and dated and needed a refurb. Summary, we recommend you come here for dinner, park in a municipal car park and don't stay over. oh, in terms of location it receives 5 stars as its only a few minutes walk from the Bishops palace and the cathedral.

We were disappointed at 1st when we tried to book a table for dinner and were told the restaurant was full so we would be eating in the bar but when we were shown to our table it was in a lovely intimate little area through a gate and up a few steps. It had a fire and was candlelit and was really cosy. Our food was served quickly and was really tasty. We came on for a drink at lunch time and were served by a really lovely man behind the bar. Went for lunch on a busy Saturday market day. The pub was busy. Getting service was difficult—even standing in front of the counter you would be ignored. Young waitresses extremely unfriendly. Once ordered, the food came fairly quickly and it was good. The mushroom soup was especially good. It’s a shame that a pub so decorative on the outside and sporting a plaque stating that William Penn (founder of Pennsylvania State) gave a speech from the pub and was promptly arrested, should have so little atmosphere inside. General messiness (unclean tables; napkins on floor) didn’t help. Wouldn’t come here again.

Had lunch on Saturday Market Day. The Market was very busy, as was the Crown Bar/Restaurant. Pretty dismal surroundings with plenty of dogs around. Ordered a Sharing meal, Roasted Camembert, focaccia and pickles/chutneys. Very disappointing…Camembert had little taste, the focaccia ,not warmed but cold and was rock hard with three small dishes of pickles and definitely not worth the £15.00 plus. I remember the Crown from many years ago but it has gone downhill fast …we won’t be visiting again.

We visited Clark’s Shopping Village today and went into Frankie & Benny’s for lunch. We had 5 adults and a 1yr old. We ordered 4 main courses and three starters to have as a main course. We were asked if we would like the starters as a main and we said yes. The starters arrived but none of the other food did. We were told they were just waiting for the chicken and the other meals would be out. We looked at the pass and could see a main meal there that was the same as one of the ones we had ordered, but we assumed that was for another table. 15mins or so passed and the main meal was still there. They then put the rest of our meals up and bought all of the meals to the table. We queried the meal that had been sat on the pass for ages. They apologised and said they would take it back. Under 2mins later they arrived with what they told us was a new meal. We queried it again and we’re assured they had done us a fresh one. The meal was for my 74 year old mum, she assured us the meal was fine, but she does not like to make a fuss so we were not sure. Mum only ate half the meal, as she was worried it was still the same meal and we have a 2 hour drive home. My hubby tried her meal and he is convinced they just gave her back the same meal, as it came out far too quickly. They reduced our bill but the looks we were getting from the staff were not good. Why did they not just bring us the meal when it was ready as we already had one meal
