Lovely traditional pub in a lovely setting with large car park to the rear. We went for a family getogether & meal. The food is lovely with a good choice & ability to adapt the choices as it is all home made & fresh. The portions are massive. Everyone is friendly & hospitable the price is excellent less than £80 for 5 mains & 3 puddings. An old style traditional pub not trying to pretend it is anything else. We don't live locally but if we did we would definetely be locals, what an asset to the area.

Just wanted to say booked this venue for a Wake with a buffet lunch. From the very first phone call to June I knew we had picked the right place. So helpful, and only a short distance from the Crematorium. Food was lovely and just kept coming - every time a tray appeared to be emptying, it was filled up again - with simple foods that everyone loved - excellent value for money. Tea and coffee in plentiful supply with a bar for anything stronger. Surrounded in a lovely old traditional pub, with a log burner, cosy and lovely hosts. Well done June and your team.

We booked a table here with friends for a Saturday evening meal. First time here. It is a typical village pub looking slightly dated but has a nice feel about it. There is a was a warm welcome from us the staff. There was a good selection of drinks too choose from. The food that we ordered was very tasty. All freshly cooked hot and nicely presented. Due to Covid the menu was slightly restricted but something for all of us. Good prices for the quality of food.

On behalf of my parents mostly, they visit weekly and June in particular is very caring over welcoming them and attending to them and they always have time to pass with them which is really important. The food is excellent home prepared and always plenty of it. This is a traditional English pub and everything about it is perfectly fitting to welcome anyone who wishes to be there rather than a gastro pub or chained pub eatery. the atmosphere is lovely, families and friends chatting to each other in the lounge and folk enjoying a pint in the bar.

Malcolm and June kindly organised a buffet for our family wake following the passing of a close family member (examples of a the buffet can be seen on their own website) this was served with tea and freshly brewed coffee, which were topped up without us asking, our service was at the West Suffolk Crem, The Crown and Castle's location is only 5 mins or less from the Crem in Risby a lovely rural village just outside Bury St Edmunds. This was held in the one of the bar areas and the room was nice and warm as they'd put on the wood burner being a slightly chilly day. Their pub has loads of parking for anyone wishing to hold an event there and it well worth calling by for a drink or meal if passing and I shall be calling by for a meal sometime. This is a treasure of a pub and has a lovely feel to the place. Malcolm and June are so welcoming especially on an occasion like this and beforehand they were a pleasure to speak to on the phone & so understanding on an occasion like this and made my day a lot easier knowing I had the wake organised so easily with them. They have been here for many years and I believe their son helps them run this venue - I would love to have this pub as my local and its nice to see there are still some local pubs around. An elderly aunt was able to get her walker into the pub very easily and another guest in a wheelchair found access very easy.

Went for a family sunday lunch today including 2 children a vegetarian in our party. All were catered for very well, with plenty of choices. I had the roast beef and it was really good. Crunchy Yorkshire was yummy and gravy was perfect. You get a good portion of meat and generous vegetables. Lady who served us was very good, she was friendly and couldn't do enough to help. Desserts were ok, custard was the best bit for me.

I had chicken with a cheese and leek sauce with mashed potatoes and vegetables. VERY tasty. The mash was so smooth and creamy and made with "proper" potatoes and not the packet stuff! Then I had the cheesecake for dessert. That was also really lovely too. I highly recommend coming here for a meal. The staff are really nice and friendly also.

The Crown and Castle is very close to Bury St Edmunds Crematorium. We held a private wake today to say goodbye to a beloved Dad and Grandad. Firstly the staff couldn't be more helpful. We hired the function room, which was the perfect size for our party. The room was heated by a lovely log fire. The food, buffet style, was tasty and well presented. There was plenty to eat and the quiche and sandwiches were re-filled. It's a lovely old-fashioned homely style pub. Perfect for us to reminisce. Thank you for helping us make this day special.

Stopped at the Crown and Castle on a day trip to Suffolk. Perhaps because there is no other pub in Risby, this venue felt more like we were in the "real" England. My dining partner and I each had the Sunday roast (beef), and Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert. We didn't leave hungry! The roast was good, and a large, family-style dish of veggies (string beans, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots) was served separately. On each dinner plate was the beef, two types of potatoes (boiled and whole fried), Yorkshire pudding, and a small meatball. It all was delicious. Not sure how we managed to squeeze in dessert, but we were glad we did. We each had a choice of ice cream, cream, or custard as an accompaniment; I chose the cream and my dining partner chose the custard. Both were great choices, and prices were very reasonable. For a small pub in a small village, the Crown and Castle fit the bill for us -- good food and a place to have a drink and rest a while before heading onward.

I stopped off here with my young daughter and my dad and step-mum, late Sunday lunchtime, before the latter pair headed off home after a weekend staying with us. I have to say, I won't darken the pub's doorstep again! The lady behind the bar barely acknowledged us, not even raising a smile when we ordered our drinks. All the tables in the lounge bar were set for lunch however only one table was reserved and a few other people were eating in a side room. We had no choice but to sit at a table set for lunch even though we weren't eating. After about 20 minutes, another lady, equally frosty, asked if we were eating. When we said 'no', she grumbled that the tables were for diners (even though the pub was less than a quarter full). When we pointed out that there was no-where else for those who just wanted a drink to sit, she cleared our table of place mats and cutlery, clearly in irritation. I wouldn't have minded if the pub had been heaving with diners, however there was hardly anyone there! The decor is tired and shabby, both externally and internally and although we didn't eat, both the menu and the food that we did see being served looked less than appetising. I can cope with mediocre surroundings and food but the reception from the staff was entirely unwelcoming - we won't be going back.

And the Rudgate Mild (guest beer) was stunning! It's not a restaurant, it's a pub that serves food, and it's not cordon bleu. If you want that try elsewhere and pay twice as much for half the amount.
