The outdoor ashtray at this pub is on the wall right next to the front door. So smokers (and their smoke) congregate not just by the door but actually in the doorway, blocking it. Quite incredible but also really off-putting.

Sign outside and on web page said food until 3. I asked for food at 2.30.was told "Kitchen is closed". I questioned this and was bluntly told again. "Kitchen is closed". We had a drink and left.

What a fab "local" with a great atmosphere. Friendly staff, beer garden and lots of nooks and crannies. Ideal for a quick solo pint, watching the match with the mates or a full evening session. There is a focus on horse racing, a pool table and best of all the prices are very reasonable. Can't comment on the food as I haven't dined there. Well worth a visit

Totally disappointed today , we chose the crown and anchor as its been the village pub all our lives and the heart of the village. Our family ordered a buffet for a wake paid over £300 for a few sandwiches , pork pies and sausage rolls, a bowl of crisps , salad and coleslaw . Nothing was presented at all, sandwiches just cut in half and plonked on plates , pork pies just in half again piled on a plate ...just a disgrace to be fair , and an embarrassment. No sweet offering nothing. The staff didnt once ask if everything was ok. Total rip off to be fair, no where near what should of been presented . will not be back.

Stopped for a quick 'light lunch' 😉 today. Lovely, tidy beer garden (dog friendly) and welcoming atmosphere. We ordered from the lunchtime menu - one cheese and chutney sandwich and one roast of the day sandwich (beef and horseradish) 😋. Also ordered some hand cut chips (as you do!). Both sandwiches were absolutely delicious, served with a lovely side salad, crisps and coleslaw. This was when we realised the hand cut chips were possibly not needed, but as they were so tasty we had to eat them anyway! Would certainly recommend - we'll be back some time soon to try out the rest of the menu!

Stopped here for dinner before a local race. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and decent food (though a bit pricey in my view). The disappointment was their use of the accessible bathroom as a store cupboard, with a variety of cardboard boxes and designer perfumes laying about, making use of said bathroom very challenging as a wheelchair user. Perhaps they don’t get wheelchair users very often, but making the accessible bathroom inaccessible by filling it with boxes doesn’t tempt me to come back.

This pub has gone downhill in regard to Sunday dinners. We used to go regular as the Sunday lunch used to be the best in the area but I was really disappointed by our recent experience. We went in the new year. Portion sizes have previously been good but there was barely anything to share out! When we asked for more we were told there was no more as they had ran out! The cauliflower cheese used to be top notch there but there was none of that either. When I asked the waitress said they don’t do that anymore. Very frustrating! They should not take bookings if there is not enough food to feed people! The quality of the food was not good either. The carrots were barely cooked, could not cut them with cutlery! Roasties were soggy and flavourless. Expensive for what we actually got. It’s a shame.

As it was the last night of our holiday my daughter and I decided to have a meal out. The Crown and Anchor is a lovely cozy country pub. The staff were friendly and the service was great. The steak and ale pie was the best I've had, my daughter had chicken kebab with rice and salad which she said was delicious. We couldn't say no to desert, I had tirimasu my daughter had lemon possett and they were also delicious. I will definitely recommend the Crown and Anchor to anyone visiting the area.

Whenever we stay in Thirsk we always stroll up to Sowerby to have our first beers in the Crown and Anchor. Although very smart, the pub retains a real “local” and understated feel and is always a pleasure to visit. As ever, the service was good, our beers were splendid and the atmosphere nicely relaxed and friendly.

The Crown and Anchor is situated on the beautiful old Front Street in Sowerby and is a fabulous example of a traditional British pub. This is a true local pub and excels in various areas. First and foremost it has a great bar serving top quality beers. It also has a popular restaurant and as part of the bar they cater for pool, darts and, via the televisions, horse racing. It’s a pub that seems to cater for everyone and on both times we’ve been here the atmosphere has been vibrant and friendly and we have been made most welcome. Probably the best pub in the area.

found this country pub on trip advisor and after reading some great reviews decided to give it a try, we were on a weeks holiday in north yorkshire and really fancied a good steak, from the moment we entered this busy country pub, we were made to feel very welcome, even though it was full to bursting with locals, the resturant was empty when we were seated, but soon filled up and the lovely waitress was warm and friendly, we both ordered the steak, one medium and one medium well, the chief sure knew how to cook steak it was amazing, the onion rings were the best we have ever had and the blue cheese sauce was amazing, we dont usually have dessert but the husband couldnt help himself so opted for the sticky toffee pudding with custard, we got two spoons just incase i wanted to have a little taste, it was delicious!!!!! what a little gem of a place, wish it was a bit nearer so we could go back again, highly reccommend you pop in if your in the area. 5*****

Just visited what is arguably our local pub to try the highly rated food. We had our dog so didn't expect to eat in the restaurant but were unceremoniously told they were fully booked. How do you book a table in any bar? No reserved signs etc. There were maybe 25 people in the whole pub (that I saw) and most were out front. This review is about disappointment rather than experience but I've never booked a table for a bar meal in my life - that includes pubs in places like Leicester Square!
