Best fish & chips in the area by miles friendly staff, very helpful and very clean definitely value for money, been coming here for years and never had any complaints, wouldn’t go anywhere else!

We have been going to this fish shop for years , every week either on Friday or Saturday night. Most of the time the fish and chips were very tasty. White chip cooked to perfection and thick pieces of white cod. Sometimes slightly overcooked but overall it was good enough to make us keep coming back . Tbh we would recommend them to other people. For the last 3 weeks in a row the fish and chips have been terrible . We gave them 3 chances but unfortunately that’s it . The chip were brown soggy and tasted awful . The chips seemed to have cooked and warmed up ? Not sure if this is the case but that’s how they seemed. Where there was fish. One portion small and overcooked, the other non existent, plate of batter and limp greasy brown revolting tasting chips. The fish over cooked with a Yellow tint to it and hard around the edges I knew they were going to terrible again when I smelt them in the car. The servers have always been not friendly but I can put up with that but I am not giving them any more chances with the food. For the third week running , I am sat here feeling sick with a horrible after taste .£20 out of pocket . It makes me wonder what’s gone so wrong with Great Aytons Tradition fish and chip shop?

Fish and chips were excellent. Visited once last month and got served by a very miserable had mannered member of staff with orange spiky hair. She served me again this month when I visited and unfortunately spoilt the whole experience.

It's not very often that I write a review. Credit has to go to where it’s due. This chippy really does take some beating. In my experience you have never met a more down to earth lot. The fish that is served reminds me of the fish and chips from my youth. I highly recommend trying the curry sauce. I appreciate this place and the efforts of the people within it. Long may they and it continue to be a part of Ayton’s landscape.

On holiday in this area and sampled Great Ayton's traditional Yorkshire fish and chips. They are based in the High Street. Its been years since we had any as good as this. They fry to order so there may be wait but its so worthwhile as the fish is nice and fresh and chips cooked well. We enjoyed them so much that at the end of our holiday we went back for more! Would certainly recommend if in the area.

Large portion of chips is not as big as I would expect but quality of chips and large battered sausage was average standard and I would return.

Called in today for a very quick lunch between meetings. No one else in and they didn’t have a minimum spend for my card, so was served and out in a minute. Sat in the car eating superb chips on a rainy day watching the world go by. Nice people and the chips were spot on, in fact the best I’ve had in some time.

I’ve lived in Lancashire, West Yorkshire and West Midlands and now settled on the coast in Redcar. Tried lots of fish & chips from around these places and favourite place used to be in Whitby, that was until I found AYTONS, just went for a ride out today and stopped here for Cod & chips, ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Taste just like they used to when I was a kid, when they used dripping for frying, not only that but is was a lovely thick fillet of (skin off) cod and lovely tasting, freshly fried chips . Well worth the 12 mile drive. Sorry Redcar and Whitby, but it’s Great Ayton every time from now on. BRILLIANT. Was so impressed had to pop my head back in to tell them, a job well done deserves praise.

We regularly go to Aytons Fisheries and the two gentlemen who usually cook are lovely and friendly and always very kind. Each time however one particular lady serving at the front is miserable. I’ve noticed it a few times but on a recent visit with a family member they commented on how rude and ignorant she is too. The food is second to non however the lady serving ruins the charm of the business in my personal opinion. Im a very outgoing bubbly person however, it’s not difficult to be polite and thank a customer after you’ve served them. Other than that the food is lovely. I would of gave five stars without hesitation had the one member of staff didn’t persistently make us feel unwelcome. Maybe some extra training in customer service wouldn’t go a miss.

Being fairly close to Whitby, I expected this fish to be really fresh. It tasted like it had been in the freezer for months and the batter was a weird dark brown colour. Chips were soggy too! I wonder if the fat was off? Not impressed! We will not be returning!

We had a Friday evening meal and enjoyed it. It was busy (lockdown queuing) and it was working hard- that might explain the sense of competence rather than excitement? It’s a decent stop, no problems, but based on this visit, not quite of the top drawer.

Top quality fish and chips, big portions, the guy cooking the fish is very friendly, clean , lovely fish and chips easily the best in the teesside area and I d go as far as saying better than anything Whitby offers ( have noticed the quality in whitby going down pre lockdown) . Fish cooked to order. Very popular. Sometimes Q s outside, but always dealt with quickly and well worth the wait.

Had fish & Chips and sausage and chips from this shop, it's the first time we have used the Shop as we are only just moving into the area. Everything was delicious, the staff were very friendly, we are looking forward to using this fish shop on a regular basis.

The first time we tried this Fish and Chip shop was years ago - not very good then but decided to give it another chance today. Such a mistake! Good quality fish completely ruined. Based on this visit the owner has absolutely no idea how to cook fish properly. The fish was literally swimming in fat. Disgusting and will not be back. Two strikes and out.

The delicious fish and chips were the perfect antidote to a wet Friday. It’s very popular, not surprisingly, so we had a short wait - our order was taken while we were waiting in line and the fish was perfectly cooked to order. We had cod and chips and it was possibly the best I’ve ever had. The fish was so fresh, sweet and succulent and the batter was very crispy, not at all greasy. The same can be said for the chips - crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The regular portion was very generous and great value. I wish this was our local fish and chip shop.

Called Wednesday lunchtime 17/6/20 desided to try fish and chips witch were absolutely lovely the chap doing the cooking seems very nice but the lady serving is misrable & very rude it's as if she doesn't want to be there this was our third visit but she will not put us of not going lovely fish & chips.

£2 for a tiny portion of chips and mark up on pies is a joke. Fish and chips taste alright but not worth the cost.

Fish and chips was the request from my partner. We had been told about this place by some friends living in Great Broughton, what a great recommendation. Freshly cooked and scummy, definitely will visit again.

This is our go to chip shop. Visit regularly and highly recommend the place. Fish is always cooked fresh to order and is easily comparable to those expensive restaurants in near by Whitby (if not better)

This is a popular chippy and the quality is always consistently good. All fish is cooked to order to ensure it is fresh and hot. Cant go wrong.

We visited on a recommendation and whilst it was good, it wasn't that great that we would go out of our way again.Whilst you can't really go wrong with chips, however I found the sausage to be a little soggy. The fish was a great size though and my husband enjoyed it. We paid just over £10 for both.We visited on a friday just before 12pm and Great Ayton was absolutely packed! I'd thought it only busy on a weekend with tourists, but the roads driving there were a nightmare with double parked cars and once we got to the high street we couldn't park anywhere near the shop. We ended up parking the other side of town, past Suggitt's, and walking 5 minutes to the fish & chip shop, so not very convenient. Because of this we will not be returning, we live in Nunthorpe so will try Stokesley next time.Staff very friendly. About a 10 minute wait but was peak time just after 12pm when we visited and fish is cooked to order.

Never visited this fish &chip shop before as not local to area but we were sight seeing and came across this fish shop in the high street.Ordered only a portion of chips and I must say they were lovely, very tasty so can only imagine that the fish would be great also.Facilities immaculately clean and I was served with a smile, which is rare these days.If we are in area again I will certainly be coming here.GREAT

I do a 12 mile round trip for their Fish & Chips which tels you something when I could go to nearby Stokesley where there are two fish shops.

Until recently, we were very happy with the fish and chips we bought there. On the last visit the price had increased by about 20% and the fish was dry and leathery.

Superb fish and chips - best we've had for a very, very long time - well presented and served by very friendly and efficient staff, in very clean and bright surroundings. Absolute quality food and service and really great value for money.

Would have given a 70/100 Fish itself was nice however the batter was overdone. Chips were nice. Shop was clean. Had nicer fish and chips elsewhere.

Great freshly cooked to order fish and hot chips - crispy and delicious. Service is pretty speedy despite them cooking to order. Not the cheapest but definitely the best. Just wish they had a cafe.

Our local Fish and Chip Shop. Just half a mile from home and the quality is excellent. There are 3 portion sizes of fish to choose from as well as a variety of other typical f and c shop items. The portions are GENEROUS!! Enjoy!

Family run friendly village F & C

This was truly an excellent experience. I explained that I am allergic to gluten and dairy and I was reassured that my meal would be safe for me to eat. Battered cod, mushy peas and chips which were just the best.

We usually go to Saltburn for our fish and chips but this one is definitely up there, if not better.

These Fish and Chips are excellent. A wide variety to suit your choice. 3 sizes of cod - small, medium and large - the small equates to normal elsewhere! The 'regular' is quite plentiful and the large is, well, large. Fish is cooked fresh on request after you arrive. The chips are a generous portion too - small or regular. Other fish varieties and other items available to order.

This is not a restaurant but a fish and chip shop. Fish cooked to order and very fresh its very popular especially with the locals but have to say its the best fish and chips I've tasted from a fish shop,if youre in the area walking or climbing Roseberry topping this is a great place to go for great fish and chips

Having reviewed other fish n chip shops in the area, my top three are this one, one in Dormanstown, and the one near the pier in Saltburn. But this one clinches it. A bit pricy, but worth it.

Well worth a try, I love the fish cakes but usually get fish n chips and mushy peas, always freshly cooked so could be a little wait but when you walk in they always ask if you want fish so it ready when you get to serving area, you can even get Petch pies from here, polite friendly staff and clean shop......and not a sign of kebabs spit roasting in the background, a proper English chippy.

Visited here a few times and would visit again, Food is cooked to order so may have to wait but its worth the wait - I had fish pattie and chips and my boyfriend had large sausage and chips, Had to wait so went for a little walk whilst cooking and came back, They batter is the best we have tasted. We also got a curry which was nice and mild, We will defo be visiting again when in the area.

Pescado y patatas fritas, mejor encantador de la zona. Es precioso, el personal era servicial y siempre alegre. Con mucho gusto recomendaría a cualquiera a probar esta tienda. Tienen un menú bastante, contarles lo que desea al entrar en la tienda. A veces usted puede esperar un poco, pero es sin duda vale la pena.

No me puedo quejar de este lugar, nunca tuvimos una mala comida o saber cualquiera que tiene! El personal siempre es amable, lo único negativo es que es tan buena la cola siempre es la salida de la puerta!

Estos sitios no tiene el mejor pescado y patatas fritas alrededor. Personal encantador, amable que están dispuestos a ofrecer cosas que no necesariamente están en el menú. Altamente recomendado!

I've never been before until recently but it was the best fish and chips me and my partner have ever had! Wouldn't go anywhere else now!

Called in for fish & chips as a treat to ourselves after climbing Roseberry Topping. Cooked to order they were well worth waiting for, yummy chips, chunky fish and the batter was to die for. Will definitely return when we are on our travels. I wish I had took a photo of them but we had to eat them straight away :)

You order your fish when you go in and the short wait is well worth it! Beautiful crunchy batter and fresh, boneless and skinless cod inside. The best for miles around.

This is the Best fish and chip shop I've been to and I've tried many all over the place. I go here every time I get myself to Great Ayton. Really tasty fish. I always ask for lightly battered and this way the fish seems to melt in my mouth. Love it!

Simply excellent.I'd say that Ayton's is currently the best fish and chip shop in Yorkshire (and therefore, the world). I'd happily stand on the counter of the Magpie in Whitby and make this announcement.

This is our local Fish and Chip Shop which, since it opened a few years ago, has always served food of a high quality. Your order for fish is taken when you enter the shop and even if there is a queue, by the time it is cooked it is about your turn. Large, medium and small cod portions are served and fish such as haddock and skate as availoable. There is also a choice of other foods, e.g. pies and chicken.

Nice clean shop with good service, fish n chips cooked to perfection! I've been here a few times, Generous portions worth going out of your way for. Will def be back!

We use Ayton's Fish and Chips regularly (as do many others) and the queue in the shop (and often outdoors) is testament to the quality of the food. The fish and chips are always tasty and we prefer to travel to Great Ayton rather than use our more local fish and chip shops which aren't of the same quality. A 'small' portion is offered as an alternative to a full size portion, which suits us. The shop is clean and efficient and comes highly recommended.

You have got to give this a try especially if you like proper fish n chips, it's best to order when you in the queue as they will do you fish how you like it, they do petches pies as well, very clean place and friendly staff.

Fish was fresh, batter lovely and light and the chips freshly cooked...beautiful! Cannot wait until my next visit

Always cooked fresh as you order your food as you go in. Not just regulars, but everyone coming in the place knows they are in for a short wait and it encourages a bit of banter. Not the cheapest fish N chips around, but good portions, fresh, tasty & hot. It's our first choice in the area. Best chips ever last week.

My wife and I are 'fish and chip experts' and have eaten them all over the UK. These were excellent - gorgeous haddock with thin, crispy batter. Chips could have been a bit more cooked for my personal taste but were very good nonetheless. The owner is a very friendly chap and we had a good natter. We were on holiday but the locals were queuing up to get in...says it all

Well worth the drive out to So tasty and perfectly cooked - quality food and staff and great selection Freshly cooked to order - we went close to closing tonight and observed a young man ordering a pie- there was one in the hot window yet the owner cooked a fresh one as he felt the other would be too dry - it's that attention to detail no matter the time, product or customer that sets this place apart from the rest

Popped in sat evening and ordered fish and chips x3. Place was busy. All orders cooked to order...despite that we waited less than 10 minutes. Food was excellent.

We had an excellent spring evening with a walk up to nearby Captain Cooks Monument, then into Great Ayton for fish and chips sat on the green. Delicious food, well cooked and ample portions.

These are without doubt the best fish and chips in a 30 mile radius. The fish are cooked to order, tasty and with lovely crispy batter too. The chips are great too. We do the 10 mile round journey even though we have much closer fish & chip shops as Mark's are easily the best anywhere in this area.

If you want high colesterol this is a great way to get it. We were very hungry and bought a portion of chips to settle this. If we hadn't been hungry I think I would have wanted a complete refund. Probably the fat-richest sludge I've ever had. See the photo. Perhaps it's a Northern thing to have barely cooked potatoes but I like my chips crispy on the outside and cooked on the inside. As a fish and chips lover I did try many fish and chip shop. But this one is something special, they cook fish very carefully and the size is very reasonable. Price is fantastic for the quality you get. I recommend to anybody around here.

Best fish and chips about and it's worth the drive up from Middlesbrough as there isn't any decent fish and chips shops around here. Customer service is great - all welcoming and friendly staff. I've heard them ask the older people and kids if they are sharing and they'll split them into two for them :-)Highly recommended

I'm not a big fish lover but the fish and chips here are defiantly an exception for me fish is always beautiful and white and a great texture don't know how they always manage to impress me a must if your passing.

Made to visited to this fish and chip shop during my stay in Great Ayton. The fish is fresh (not frozen) and is cooked to order. The service was friendly and the portions are generous. Unfortunately the fish fryer is over doing it and on both occasions the cod I had was rubbery and over cooked. A minute or so less in the fryer and a golden brown batter rather than the dark brown battered cod they serve would make all the difference.

Stopped here for a quick lunch and would gave to say they were the best fish and chips I have had for a very long time.The man serving was very polite and cooked our fish fresh when we went in.The batter was very light and perfectly cooked and the chips were also superb.The other ladies serving were also very good and asked if we would like our one portion splitting into 2 trays as my wife and I were sharing.All in all an extremely good experience and we will be returning!

We live locally and use this at least once every two weeks. It is very clean, the staff are quick and friendly and your order is cooked as you enter. Fish is always good and portions are big, we usually get 1 chips between two.

I called today early dinner around 5 friendly welcome asked if I would like a fish, typical I thought how long is this going to take. The gent frying said it will be four minutes, and it was worth the wait absolutely beautiful recommend this fish and chip shop excellent clean inviting and taste was to die for.
