Had a lovely lunch here, sitting outside in the sunshine. Food was delicious and good value too - we went on a Friday so we're able to take advantage of the pie day offer, and we just about had room for a cake (which there was a good selection of). Staff were very friendly and the setting is lovely- we especially enjoyed watching the birds and other wildlife.

Not the warmest of welcomes as we arrived with two Labradors. We were seated in the parlour but were told if we wanted to eat we’d have to eat there and not at a table. Therefore only had a snack as didn’t fancy eating off our laps. Lovely pub but clearly not very dog friendly - which may be a plus for some. Dogs are not warmly welcomed and indeed advised “leave them in the car” if you want to eat in the restaurant! Shame really as we’d travelled a fair distance. Maybe they were just having an “off” day!

So disappointed that, after driving 60 miles to visit this inn and the nearby waterfall, there was just a notice on the door saying CLOSED! This in spite of their website stating that their Monday opening hours are 10.30 till 2.30. Make sure to ring and check they are actually open before you go. We had been looking forward very much to visiting so were very disappointed. Other people also arriving and expecting to be able to have lunch there.

We like most people called in here after a walk to Cautley Spout. The open fire in the small parlour was very welcoming on a cold day. We both ordered soup which was a tad over salty but we don't use salt usually so that may have been why. Husband really enjoyed his black pudding combo starter & I had an egg mayo sandwich which was so generous it did for my tea as well, Lovely friendly staff. Well worth a visit. It is a dry establishment but you can bring your own.

Visited on Saturday 04th June 2022. We made the short journey from our accommodation to Cross Keys Temperance Inn for a late lunch before we walk to Cautley Spout which is the highest non-free falling waterfall in England. Limited parking on-site and shared with the adjacent farm but some parked on the opposite side of the road. The main building is a B&B and though there appeared to be an interior eating area we found a seat outside as the weather was lush and though this seating was a little ad hoc given the shape and size of the patio area, it served us fine. The menu had snacks, drinks and limited full meals but the service was fine as was the food when delivered. The payment was made back in the tiny service area and was straightforward enough. There were toilets on site and overall these all complimented what is the best part, namely the view up the valley leading to the waterfall in the distance. We will be back, as a view like this enriches the soul.

We had an excellent lunch of tuna and egg mayonnaise bagettes, sitting outside in glorious sunshine under a parasol in the rear garden overlooking Cautley Spout and the Howgill Fells. A corner of Historic Yorkshire (West Riding) close to the Westmorland border, on the Sedbergh to Kirkby Stephen road. Paradise on a hot lunch time! Highly recommended.

After a very cold, wet and windy climb this was a lovely warm location to warm the toes. With a fire lit snug it seemed perfect and had seen good reviews. The decor is not everyone's taste with nick nacks covering every possible surface. The menu was reasonable with plenty of choice. We chose the pies which I think are home made but unsure after hearing the majority of the deserts were not home made. Basic food but reasonably priced. My main criticism was the CAT walking around the dining areas..... If your a cat person fair does but a feline friend wrapping around my legs whilst I try and eat was not the experience I expected.

Remember, this is a temperance inn - no alcohol is served. If you're dining, they are happy for you to take your own.The next thing to mention right at the start is the Covid precautions. Staff are scrupulous and well ahead of many other places. Be prepared to have your temperature taken.Whoever built the inn in the 1500s knew what they were doing. The view up into the hills and looking at Cautley Spout waterfall (apparently the highest in England) is a real treat and it's a popular walk up to it. We called at lunchtime to book for an evening meal and dallied in the sunshine, having a chat with the friendly landlord. Our evening meal was really good. A black pudding starter and anybody is well on the way to a 5 star review. This was followed by a large portion of really tasty rabbit pie with an interesting broccoli/cauliflower cheese side and chips, and then a delicious Dulverton Tart. This is very interesting because the only mention of Dulverton Tart on the whole internet is in reviews of this inn! It's a delicious fruity tart with a sponge topping. I took a bottle of "Last Wolf" brewed not too far away in Cartmel which went down very well with the rabbit. The inn is homely with an open fire and appointed with quaint furnishings.I enjoyed the whole experience very much and would return any time. Some things are still right in this world.

If I could give a rating of 6 out of 5 for this authentic little pub and what it provides, I would. We booked for Sunday lunch before heading off for a Dales walk, and arrived back 2 hours late for lunch! No problem - our delicious, fresh local food, hot lunch was ready in no time... and then there was dessert... all a bit different from the standard pub fare. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The fire was going and the charming atmosphere was like stepping back a couple of centuries. It's an alcohol-free pub with a great alternative drinks menu - but if you can't do without the stuff that makes you loud and gregarious, then you're welcome to BYO.

Prijs kwaliteit dik in orde. Parkeren langs de weg.

Firstly, you take your own drinks - whether that be G&Ts;, wine, digestifs or beer - so if you're a wine lover this is a guarantee of drinking good wine and not paying anything for it! There is a lovely reception room and then a simple but welcoming dining area - or the option to sit in a small conservatory with spectacular views of Cautley Spout and a couple of lambs wandering up to be fed from a bottle! The food was tasty and the portions very generous - especially the starters and desserts. Ive eaten here several items and, in the past, its been a bit hit or miss but this time it was a definite bullseye and, from what I hear, that seems to be pretty constant.

We enjoyed our dinner here very much. The food was honest and unspoilt by superfluous cheffy touches. The standard of cooking was high with each course being delicious. Standout dish for us was the crundle pudding. The inn has a Lovely ambiance and is in a great setting. As this is a temperance pub they have a long list of unusual soft drinks, but you can take your own bottle. Lastly service was very good. We liked this inn so much we returned next day for lunch.

I was looking forward to my visit, and as i walked inside to order a soft drink found the initial room quaint. However,i feel the National trust are missing a trick rooms look basic on the bed and breakfast leaflet, and would not encourage me to book in.Love the views out of the back door and a nice walk .

We knew this place was fairly small so booked a table for Sunday lunch by phone. Pleased we did as they were busy. The car park is small but you can usually park on the roadside. You are welcomed and shown into the parlour decorated in Victorian style. It was like visiting your granny's in the early 1900s! Lots of things to look at and you can play the piano if you have the talent! The menu is small but that's a fair indication that nothing will have come out of the freezer or microwave. It all looked homemade. My husband had the huge gammon, two eggs and chips with salad garnish and finished it but I don't know how he did it! I had the lovely rabbit pie with veg. As others have said you can take your own wine but they do a nice menu of soft drinks including a few which are more unusual. We had no room for desserts but they all sounded good. We had to do the waterfall walk to help get rid of some of the calories but went back afterwards for tea and coffee. This time afternoon tea was being served in the fire lit parlour and that looked good too. Would have no hesitation in going again when next in this wonderful area.

Lovely spot, nestled on the road out of Sedbergh under Cautley Spout. Traditional inn - low beams, lots of interesting trinkets (e.g. photos of Victorian rugby teams, old police uniform, antique muskets etc). Sat in the parlour in front of the fire before dinner, bit odd, but very nice. Food excellent, and lots of it. Great local pudding selection, make sure you ask for a description of all the puds on offer! And it's a temperance inn, so make sure you BYOB! Definitely the best chow in and around Sedders.

Whilst driving past, this lovely old Temperance Inn beckoned - it was time for a break and we were so glad to stop here. The old Inn was magnificent with its open fireplace and low beams and ceilings. We were entertained by the man of the house and were told the history of this beautiful old building. Morning tea was delicious with another serve of scones, jam and cream (plentiful helping of all), and later, pleasantly full, we walked around the garden and marvelled at the beautiful scenery of the Fells behind the Inn. It certainly was a pleasant place to visit and anyone travelling near Sedbergh should take the opportunity and visit and maybe if lucky enough, hear the story about the old Temperance Inn.Thumbs up for this lovely, historic place.

The Cross Keys is a very old pub dating back at least 200 years. A dreadful accident when a well refreshed farmer walking home slipped into the ditch on a freezing night and died, made the then landlady vow not to serve alcohol any longer. Diners can however, bring their own wine and beer to bring a little more good cheer to the home cooking. We always enjoy the open fire in winter and the glorious view of Cautley Spout waterfall in summer. The Cross Keys are a favourite place for our family celebrations, its just a very special place!

We ate here last night, a party of six with four adults and two teens. What a wonderful place. Great atmosphere, very welcoming and friendly in a stunning location. The food is amazing. Top quality ingredients beautifully cooked without the pretentiousness you find in some restaurants. They kindly doubled a starter for my daughter to turn it into a main course. Highlights were the potted shrimps, rabbit pie, crundle dessert and dulverton tart. Rarely do you eat somewhere where all three courses are superb. Lots of empty plates and happy people when we left. We will come back :) Thank you

We noticed the Cross Keys marked on our roadmap and stopped for lunch & a quick stroll up to Cautley Spout. Blazing fire in the parlour was very welcome on a wintry day, colder by comparison in the conservatory where we were shown to a table. Exceptional homemade bread with the soup - would have been good to have the same with the delicious homemade pate too. We tried the crundle for pudding: unusual but tasty. Friendly staff & homely environment, we hope to call again. No dogs inside though as National Trust property.

Noticed that the Temperance Inn was marked on our road map and decided to see what it was like. Very glad we did! Dropped in for afternoon tea and were delighted with the place. Friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, good range of home produced goodies and interior decoration that seems to have just accumulated since around 1750. Not on the beaten track, but worth looking for. Hill walkers and cyclists welcome.

just completed a walk in the Howgills and Cautley Spout so returned to the hotel for food. The lovely staff made us welcome, brought us coffee in the lounge before serving food in the dining room. Thursday is pie day so you get a choice of about 8 different pies plus chips or mash plus veg and coffee or tea for £7.50. Pies are home made and excellent. Great choice of other food on the menu plus lots of desserts to choose from. Sadly we were too full but will return. You feel like you have stepped right back into the 40's. The dining room has a view right up to the waterfalls and the garden is full of colourful wild birds on the feeders. Do go there. You will not be disappointed. Contact me about the walk though.

The food is excellent and the proprietor and staff are so friendly and helpful. It may be temperance but you are able to take your own wine etc. The surroundings and views are some of the best in this old section of the West Yorkshire dales. (Now of course Cumbria). Ring up to prebook if you are a larger party.

This is a unique pub, although not attractive to anyone wanting an alcoholic drink! The pub is preserved in a style you might have expected in the early 1900s. The "Keys" special salads are worth trying, with chicken cheeses and fruit included in the dish. There are also some wonderful views from the conservatory at the back if you can get a seat there.

Our first visit, having taken a link of places to stay from the National Trust section for Sizergh Castle. In the middle of nowhere (well, between Sedbergh and Ravenstonedale), This Inn is surrounded by high hills and the Cautley Spout (cascading waterfalls to the uninitiated). A 'temperance' Inn (no alcohol)...but who cares? The scenery, the comfortable inn, smashing hosts and good food is a more intoxicating experience. Stayed for two days in the double room - very nice. Enjoyed one evening meal (the rabbit pie was gorgeous, as was the steak and ale pie - both tender and rich). Quaint sitting area, library for visitors' use, small but lovely conservatory to dine in - overlooking fields, grazing sheep and magnificent hills (and Spout). Twas a trifle expensive for us but, in all honesty, we would love to visit again

We booked a table at this interesting looking pub, at the end of a lovely walk up to Cautly Spout waterfall. It was a wonderful welcome by all the staff, and attentive service throughout, making us feel very welcome. The atmosphere of this old inn is truly unique, and the hosts have made it the most incredible experience. We were shown to a table in a conservatory overlooking the beautiful hills, and presented with delicious food. We had a wonderful waitress who I believe was from Equador....We cannot recommend this place highly enough....and we hope to return next year, and enjoy a weekend here.

Our walking group of 10 people liked this restaurant which attracted the following scores: 8, 7, 9, 9, 8, 8, 7, 7, 8, and 7. Our host gave us a very interesting talk about the Quakers, the long history of the Inn and how it become a temperance inn. The staff were young, polite, professional and very accommodating and helpful. The atmosphere was cosy and the food was very good / excellent. As this is a temperance Inn you will need to take your own alcohol which obviously saves you a significant amount of money for the drinks and makes this outstanding good value for money.

Had a wonderful group dinner there in June, The food was great, especially the Rabbit Pie made with local Rabbits. The Cross Keys is a little of the beaten path, so you probably need to drive there. Perhaps the best part of the meal was listening to Alan explain the history of the location and area. It is definitely a family affair, with several members of the family helping to cook and serve. As a temperance inn, they cannot serve any alcohol, but you can bring some with you if you wish. This Inn has been around for hundreds of years, hopefully it can continue in the future.

Walked up to near the waterfall and needed some lunch. Fortunately the Cross Keys is at the start/end of the walk. The service is quick and friendly and if it's sunny there is a really nice garden with a superb view over the Dales towards the cautley spout waterfall. There is a great selection of 'no alcohol' drinks - the nettle cordial is especially good. I had the club sandwich. The food is very tasty and well cooked. Highly recommended

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.
