My partner and I had eaten here on previous occasions and enjoyed the food and quiet ambience of the place .Our dinner last night was ,however , very ordinary .The portions of all courses were skimpy with the mains in particular requiring far more vegetables to accompany them .The breads accompanying the amuse bouches were dull and the butter with them too soft and tasteless . A disappointing experience .

We love Clare House and each time we visit it seems to get better and better if that is possible! We had dinner there again the other evening and as it was a beautiful evening had our pre dinner drinks in the sitting room whilst making our menu choices. Once again there was a great variety on the menu and something for everyone. The service was excellent, the food exceptional and the prices very reasonable. It's our go to place for lunch or dinner when we are in the area. A must visit!

We were looking for a nice place for lunch and found Clare House Hotel. We were not residents but, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we were made to feel very welcome. We had tea and sandwiches in the lounge with an amazing view. The sandwiches were superb. Substantial portions and made with fresh ingredients. The service was excellent. Subtle but very attentive. Professional yet very friendly. It certainly is a hidden oasis and we will be back again as soon as the opportunity arises.

We have been promising ourselves to return to Clare House for dinner since we had afternoon tea there earlier in the year. We enjoyed the restaurant when we had lunch there last year and couldn't wait to try their dinner service. We were certainly not disappointed! Before we talk about the excellent food and service It should be noted that they are incredibly fastidious with Covid safety. There are hand sanitisers both outside the main door and at the entrance to each room. The staff all wear masks and the tables have been carefully placed to meet the social distancing rules. We were served drinks and nibbles in the lounge whilst we choose from the menus. In the end, although it was a difficult choice, the starters we chose were the parsnip soup and the mackerel. For our main courses two of us went for the beef whilst the other went for the hake. For pudding it was Crumble and Ice-cream for two and Dark Chocolate Tart for the other. All wonderfully presented and flavoursome. With coffees served in another lounge in front of a roaring fire it really couldn't not have been improved upon. Always a delight to visit Clare House whether it be lunch, afternoon tea or dinner you can't fail but to be impressed by their excellent food and first class service!

Booked a table for Sunday Lunch after reading the highly commendable comments on this website, regrettably we were a little disappointed with the offering. Whilst my wife and I don’t these days have a big appetite we left feeling that despite three courses we left still feeling hungry. The starter was very nice of fresh figs and Parma ham which was tastefully plated, but my main courses of ribeye beef was very skimpy and minimalist which only offered three small medallions of beef. My wife had the turkey which she said was tasty and sufficient for her appetite. The other thing we didn’t much care for was that the meal came plated with no serving vegetables. We had the Eton mess and the berry crumble for dessert which was nicely presented and tasty. A pleasant place to visit but regrettably we won’t be making a hurried return.

Have been promising ourselves to go to Clare House for lunch for absolutely ages and today we finally got round to doing it. We were not disappointed! From the moment we walked in we felt very welcome and the lady Maitre'd was very pleasant and helpful. She showed us to a table and brought the menus and made sure we were happy before she went to bring us water for the table. The menu was a good selection and had everything from light bites to a substantial lunch. We opted for the haddock risotto and a New Yorker, which was a Sourdough Pastrami sandwich with salad and vegetable crisps. Both were beautifully presented, hot and tasty and, although we really didn't think we could manage a pudding she brought us a complimentary assiette of desserts which included Christmas Pudding Ice Cream, Ginger Parkin and Chocolate Brownie. A really super lunch in a beautiful location. We will be back soon!

Visiting Grange -over-sands for the day and walking up from the promenade found this hotel which was advertising the resturant menu open to the public. After doing some shopping we came back to the hotel for lunch and we're so pleased that we did. The dining room is lovely and were seated at a table with a view of the bay between some trees. A great lunchtime menu available. We both had the smoked haddock and spring onion risotto. It was absolutely delicious! I really couldn't fault it. Good selection of wines available (by bottle or glass). Managed to squeeze in a pudding and both chose homemade sticky toffee pudding with homemade butterscotch ice cream - again, ten out of ten. Had coffee and tea served in one of the lounges, with a really good view of the bay. Will definitely go back when in the area.

My wife and I are staying in Grange-Over Sands for a week and wanted to find somewhere for nice for lunch, ideally with a view of the estuary with a nice restaurant. I had looked at the various options in Grange via Trip but most venues appeared to be either pubs or cafe's with fairly standard offerings. However, I also read about the Clare House Hotel and we decided to give it a try. The hotel is situated virtually at the end of the promenade, just over the railway footbridge and does indeed have a superb view of the estuary from the garden terrace. We were welcomed and chose to sit out as it was a hot day. There were a few other diners and the atmosphere was generally tranquil, which again was what we enjoy. The menu was ideal for what we wanted which was a fairly light lunch - 2 course. We were very impressed with the standard of food for the price and would say it was definitely high end - leaning towards fine dining in its quality and presentation and both dishes we had were delicious. We opted for a desert and again were not disappointed - the total cost for 2 courses and a glass of white wine each - just over £40 which we felt was excellent value. The service was also appropriately attentive and we were served by a lovely young waitress (Jemma I think) who was very pleasant, helpful and friendly and helped make the whole experience more enjoyable. After paying the bill, we walked back into grange to find a few of the other eating establishments uncomfortably busy and we couldn't help but think that we had found a hidden gem in the Clare House Hotel - for no more cost than perhaps an average pub style meal either. If you like quality high end food, at a reasonable cost , with a stunning view and you just happen to be in Grange Over Sands - we would highly recommend this restaurant.

Possibly the only "high-end" eatery in Grange (as opposed to Cartmel just up the road) and fortunately only a few minutes' walk from where we were staying. Good job we booked in advance for Sunday (18:30) when they finish dinner service early. Most of the diners were residents of the hotel and quite a bit younger than us, possibly having smaller appetites. Lovely building with views of the bay (not from the dining room). Friendly young staff. Two delightful breads served slightly warm and whipped butter. Lovely crockery and cutlery also. Nicely decorated airy dining room. Very nice wines by the glass - I was delighted to have English white wine (not often encountered) to go with my 2 fish courses. My starter of local fish risotto was lovely; a deliciously rich sensibly sized portion for a starter. My fish main was a bit small and under-seasoned IMHO, so I had to add salt. It was not exactly generous of quantity and was quickly eaten. Cranachan desert was a spread out "deconstructed" version rather than being all in a glass and it was only just possible to taste any whisky. My wife enjoyed her vegetarian souffle (which is a rare and bold choice for a vegetarian starter). Her main was a bit carb-heavy with beans and potatoes, but good flavour and again unusual. She loved her 3 ice creams, which were all very flavoursome and creamy.Overall the quality was good to very good even if two of my portion sizes were a little bit too small.

We ate here for lunch and enjoyed two lovely courses. The portions weren’t huge but they were described as light bites and they were very tasty, we all had something different. The staff were really friendly and checked on us regularly but the room we ate in was extremely quiet which meant others who were eating there were inadvertently listening in to each other, it could have done with a bit of background music just to soak up a bit of the silence! Overall very good food and service though

My friend and I called at Clare House for lunch without a reservation. We were welcomed in a friendly manner, and seated in a quaint lounge (with an outstanding view of the sea and bay) while we studied the menu. We were dealt with in a friendly and efficient manner, and did order a glass of wine while we waited to be seated in the dining room. We were the only two people in there, although a small party of what we took to be residents (or regulars) were later seated in an adjacent dining area. I had the Bangers and Mash, and my friend had the Smoked Haddock Risotto followed by a dessert, and we both agreed the meals were very good. The only downside was that the dining room was quite chilly - we had to close a window - and there was a bulldozer working outside, which was noisy. We accept this was beyond the control of Clare House, and we probably noticed it more because we were the only two people in there. All in all, I would recommend this charming restaurant as a pleasant way to spend a few hours, eating lovely food, with superb views.

The menu for the 6 course dinner changes nightly and features local produce (fillet of beef with no surcharge!) beautifully presented. The wine list represents excellent value for money. Breakfasts were excellent, served to our table by the cheerful and efficient young staff, with lots of choice, hot or cold, home-made preserves etc.It was noteworthy that many of the other guests had stayed several times before, and we will certainly return to Clare House Hotel in the future.

Stopped here for lunch and I had the hunters chicken ciabatta with sweet potato fries. It was very nice indeed. My only complaint was that I got a bone in the chicken which I was going to point out but no-one came to us to ask how our meal was or to take our dishes away, the staff were upstairs as it was closing time and they were clearing up (I assume). When we went to pay for it the girl didn't ask if everthing was ok or how our meal was so I didn't bother saying anything. It didn't stop me from enjoying my meal or my time spent here.

A restaurant filled with bizarre rules and an extremely terrible experience. I found this restaurant online hoping to try some local Lake District lamb. When we walked in at 5:30 PM, we were told there would be no available seats until after 8 PM. We understood, as we hadn’t made a reservation. During the two and a half hour wait, we went to another restaurant for a light meal. Finally, at 8 PM, we were seated and ready to order, only to be told that all three of us had to order a main course. We kindly explained that we had already eaten something during the wait and just wanted to sample the Lake District lamb. However, the waitress informed us (and mentioned it was her first time hearing about this rule) that the kitchen had insisted three people must order three main courses since this is a family restaurant and a difficult place to book, and every customer comes here wanting to try their food. I understand the waitress’s position, but I strongly condemn the kitchen for their arrogant and ugly attitude. If you have such a rule, please clearly display it in the restaurant instead of springing unreasonable demands on customers after they’ve waited so long. This kind of behavior, treating customers as if they should feel honored just to eat here, is truly nauseating. Don’t act as if your food is some gift you’re graciously bestowing upon us; it’s just a meal – don’t take yourselves so seriously. No one else does.
