The Crooked Billet in Selby

We went for a meal here whilst visiting friends in the area on Sat 19th Oct. First impressions was the bar /restaurant area was very scruffy & not clean. We were seated in the conservatory part of the pub & were given menus by a pleasant waitress. She looked after us through out the evening very well. Also, the manager treated us well so no concerns with the staff. The concern came when my wife's meal arrived. She had ordered minted lamb pie with saute potatoes. What came resembled a desperate Dan pie filled with large pieces of new potatoes & 1 small piece of fatty lamb. Also, she had wedges instead of saute potato. We were all concerned over her meal so called the waitress over to explain that this was not what we ordered. In fairness the food was replaced with an alternative dish & she was semi happy but didn't like the potatoes. There were apologies but there was no hint of a courtesy drink for her & no thought of a reduction in her bill for this inconvenience. Also, when we paid we didn't leave a tip, just paid the bill & we got a snooty look from the lady taking payments. So, to recap I felt the pub was grubby, the waitresses were very good, the food served to my wife was totally unacceptable & the response from the lady taking payment was unfriendly. The other 3 meals were a 5 out of 10 so not a place I would rush back to if I lived in the area.

What a find! Had a trip from York to Sheffield and wanted a stop off for lunch only to find this beaut! Super friendly staff who could not have been more welcoming, delicious food, hearty portions, great value and wonderful atmosphere - just fantastic! Shame we don't live closer as we'd be frequent visitors that's for sure!

We come here once every two or three months and it never fails to impress. Midweek lunchtime, like today, and it’s always full. Speaks volumes. Been here with large family groups, with daughter & granddaughter, or just as a couple. Dog friendly too. Steak and ale pie is my go to dish, but today I went for the lamb shank with leaky mash, veg and minted gravy. Asked for extra gravy and a pot of mint sauce. No problem. My wife had the salmon fillet (small portion) which was delicious. Finished off with apple & cinnamon crumble with custard, and coffee & cake. Couple of pints of Shipyard pale ale was spot on. This is a local gem, but don’t tell anyone else as we need to make sure there’s always room for us.

What a lovely meal we had last night (Monday) I rang up to see if we needed to book and was told to we didn’t need to, we arrived at roughly 7pm. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and advised to choose a table and then we would be looked after at the table which was nice. It was nice we could choose where we wanted to sit and we chose a table near the window. The menu was lovely and I chose a filled Yorkshire pudding and my hubby had the steak. When our order was taken I had a few questions and she was lovely at explaining about the different meats. Well when our meals came wow they looked amazing and so so tasty the meat was so tender I really really enjoyed it. We did order an extra which was a bowl of pigs in blankets these were the best we have ever tasted! My meal came with an extra gravy boat which was nice as the gravy was delicious. Thank you so much for looking after us and we will see you again soon ☺️

Welcoming place for a lovely lunch with extremely helpful staff, delicious food and fantastic value for money It made such a difference that we were told to take a seat as soon as we arrived and not ignored as sometimes happens in the 'chain' pubs The lovely waitress said she would "look after us" when we'd had chance to look at the menu That was defo the right description because nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff My o/h ordered the salmon and I ordered the turkey roast dinner He was a little disappointed he didn't get a portion of seasonal vegetables like I did(even though the menu stated that his choice came with mash and green beans- what is it with men and reading menus properly?) but the waitress immediately brought out another just for him There is a really good choice of small plates and for me this was just perfect- I didn't have to feel embarrassed by asking for a child's portion Overall a very pleasant experience from beginning to end Well done The Crooked Billet you must be proud of your lovely staff We'll defo be back

What a gem of a find.! An impromptu stayover with BritStop in our motorhome. Had the 3-course meal option for £19.95. Good choice of starter, main, and dessert in this option. We had the soup. roast dinner, cheesecake and a crumble. We assumed would be small portions, but no, a feast for a king. Great quality food, plus they offer a doggy meal also for £4 The staff were so welcoming to both ourselves and our dog. Very professional, organized and helpful, nothing seemed too much trouble. Very busy so would recommend booking a table. We were so impressed we went in for a breakfast roll the next morning. Would highly recommend it , thankyou Laura, Andy, and the team. We will be back!

Treated my mum for Mother’s Day and although I’ve been many times it was first time for mum. Needless to say … she loved it. I had salmon and mum had roast beef with the famous Yorkshire pudding. Delightful

Late family Sunday lunch at this lovely pub, it was busy but we were seated and served by the very efficient staff. The food was hot and tasty and definitely hit the spot. The experience was ruined by the bad language from the kitchen, my sister went to the toilet and as the kitchen door opened a loud male voice was using sexually explicit language to another member of staff. My sister returned to the table and asked if we could leave, we were ready anyway. On our way out we walked around the corner to the carpark where we heard an extremely loud sceaming male voice verbally sexually abusing 2 walkers who were passing the window. The language we heard is unrepeatable, the walkers seamed embarrassed and even apologised as they passed us. I love this pub and will most certainly will return, I just hope this message hits home and no one else has to hear what we heard.

Meal good staff lovely just a pity dogs where allowed in where food was been severed could smell dogs not nice when your eating plus a family member has allergy to dog hair would not have them in where food is

Easter Sunday, very busy not great service ' drinks wrong, veg and gravy served in bits'. Personal opinion, poor food, won't rush back, used to be really good

Visited as a party of 6. We have eaten here for over 20 years and the food is always amazing. This did not differ this time. However the service was not the same. The mains were served but the vegetables and additional gravy took 7 minutes to arrive and 2 reminders. This meant that it was eat what we had without the sides or wait and eat cold food. Not sure if it was new staff but I am not the first person I know to have experienced this issue. We will return but will have to avoid dishes that mean we have to wait for sides. A shame.

Could not fault the food it was cooked to high standard and was throughly enjoyed ! There is a very overpowering smell in the bar area which is off putting when you first walk in but it was fish day Friday so may just be the smell of the seafood also the building could do with a re vamp very tatty in places and we was sat next to the windowsill which unfortunately was covered in dust mucky marks and a few dead insects off putting when your eating a meal! I think with a deep clean and a little re vamp the place would be a gem because the food was fantastic huge compliments to the chef !

My daughter booked a table for 1pm, an early Mothers day present. We were shown to a small table to wait until our table was ready. Our food order was taken at 1.20 and we moved to our table at 1.45. I had to ask where our food order was and it eventually turned up at 2pm. Only 5 minutes later the table at the side of us got their food and they had only been seated around 20 minures. My husband ordered the pie which was inedible, I wish I had taken a photo, the meat was shrivelled, dry and burnt. We had a dog with us and I would not have fed the meat to the dog. Three out of four had chips that were overcooked and burnt. On a positive note all the staff were pleasant and helpful and did apologise for our poor experience. This did not make up for my daughters spoilt early Mothers Day surprise

We popped in for a late lunch/ early dinner date mid week. I ordered the garlic mushrooms to start, unreal, so hot and flavoursome, the Mrs had halloumi and Brie bites, again so beautiful and well cooked! And for mains we had fish pie, with fresh beautiful vegetables. And she had the pie! It was again all cooked beautiful, no faults could be made with service or anything!

Had a lot of meals at this pub with friends & always very good, so had my daughters 30th birthday here, which was 15 people, unfortunately meals not up to scratch, a lot of main courses luke warm, belly pork chewy and mash lumpy & cold, chicken too tough to eat. Really disappointed 😢

Ignore the negative reviews! Proper pub grub and the staff were very attentive especially with the dogs. Also great value for money,

Ok… could be better. We entered the Crooked Billet to a a smell of vegetable oil - it was fish friday. The bar area was over powered by the smell. We sat in the restaurant area - it needs updating and it was cold the radiator next to us not working. The calamari was ok but needed mayo not sweet chilli sauce. The main course again was ok, but the chips tasted of the vegetable oil we could smell. It was a family birthday meal and we were left thinking it was ok. Staff were lovely and nonissues at all, but the food let them down.

We’ve just got back home from eating dinner about 3pm onwards today and to be honest with you the only good thing was the staff and the soda water with lime cordial. The food wasn’t good at all. My main course was the pie and the filling was almost bone dry’ it’s as if it’s been sat under an heated lam. My wife ordered the lamb but when it came out it was a lamb shank and very fatty and her vegetables was rubbish. My son ate his meal simply because he will just about eat anything. I had a starter of calamari but this wasn’t that good either. We only came today because it was my wife’s birthday and a lot of years ago this place was brilliant and was always busy + you couldn’t fault anything. I won’t ever return to this place again.

I don’t often leave a review but we called in for a late lunch for my birthday and was very disappointed with the whole meal. The starters were poor with soggy batter on the prawns. The pie my husband had was dry and burnt inside. The vegetables were very overcooked and inedible. unfortunately we won’t be back again, not the place I remember. It’s in need of a clean and update, and the cooking needs improvement.

Was looking for somewhere inside I could meet up with a friend & take my puppy. Dogs are allowed in the bar & snug areas at Crooked Billet which is great. Interior is lovely & the staff were pleasant & efficient. My friend ordered a sausage sarnie from breakfast menu. It arrived really quickly & was jam packed with sausages & very reasonably priced. It was my puppy's first time inside & he was a bit yappy, all the other dogs there were very well behaved. Think we need more practice so will definitely be back. Highly recommend them. It was getting pretty busy as it approached lunchtime & phone was ringing with lots of love bookings so probably need to book if you not going for breakfast time.

The food was ok but it took 90mins from ordering to receiving it and that was only after I asked them when we could expect to get served.

Dog friendly, human friendly, fantastic team of people, great customer service and great food cannot fault it! York Pudds awesome!!

Walked in for a drink and stayed for Sunday roast without needing to book though i would recommend you do as it was very busy. Food was tasty with generous portions. It beat us. We never managed a pudding so will be going back to try again. Staff were very helpful welcoming and professional.

We have visited Crooked Billet a few times and never had a bad meal, unfortunately that wasn’t the case on this occasion. Ordered the giant Yorkshire pudding with meat and veg with a side of cauliflower cheese. The Yorkshire pudding was undercooked and really doughy in the middle. When I told the waitress she apologised and said she would pass my feedback on to the chefs. The cauliflower cheese was also undercooked and meal could have been hotter. Really disappointed and begrudge paying full price for a meal that isn’t up to standard.

Absolutely fab. It’s been 31 years since we visited this place. Amazing. Known fir its giant yorkshire puddings. Had the pie and it was a proper pie and stuffed full of meat. Great.

We found the pub researching a visit to Towton Battlefield and saw they did breakfast, including dog options! We were first in at 9am Saturday morning. It was warm and welcoming with friendly staff and the coffee delicious. Breakfast was unbelievable. Breakfast in a Yorkshire pudding wrap and then breakfasts in an actual YP! Huge portions and everything good quality and well cooked. And for the Labrador, a bowl of turkey and beef. Very waggy tail!

Birthday celebration. Dog friendly. Food fantastic. Busy Sat Lunch. Excellent service great team, patient with elderly parents for whom small portion option was very welcome. Note to self book early next time to avoid disappointment.👏👏

I have to say that I love the Crooked Billet and have never had a bad evening meal there, quite the contrary. This is why we decided to go there for my birthday breakfast treat. Unfortunately it was a massive disappointment. The one sausage I received was pink in the middle so we told the waitress and the lovely girl said she could see our Sausages were pink and brought us some more. Apparently the chef had said that the original Sausages were cooked and tested with a thermometer...really???? Well the second sausage was just as pink and foul tasting as the first. I love mushrooms, can even scoff them raw but I have no idea what the chef did to those mushrooms, they were just awful. The toast was so thin and was already buttered...well covered in cheap margarine not butter. I didn't think you could get bread sliced so thin. I don't eat much on breakfasts, I give the hash browns and beans to others so I hope to enjoy whats left but sadly no. For a pub so obviously popular for lunch and evening meals, I doubt my review will cause any lost sleep but when your food is so wonderful surely you can do a decent breakfast and if not, just don't bother with the breakfast. You ruined my birthday treat so you ruined my birthday but I still love you regardless

This was our first visit but it certainly won’t be our last. The service was excellent with the food served quickly which for a large party like ours is a big plus! The food was great with something for everyone but the filled Yorkshire puddings were on another level and great value for money

Don’t eat for a week, I had roast dinner, Topside Beef, Loin of Pork and Turkey breast in a 10 Yorkshire Pudding with Creamed potatoes, mashed carrots and swede plus side vegetables and fantastic meat gravy. I’m a trained chef, this is as good as it gets. Highly recommended

First and last visit We had reserved a table on the phone. We were sat in the conservatoty . After ordering a pre meal drink we decided we had to move location as couldn't eat a meal in such dirty surrounds. Sticky filthy carpet, sticky table, red cabbage and peas on the floor . I asked to be moved and we were to a nicer location in the restaurant. Next issue our meals arrived covered in gravy when wed asked for it seperate. My partner sent his vegan roast back as doesnt enjoy much gravy. His meal returned with a moutdt not roadyed vegetable patte. So different than his first meal. 2 under cooked pale, hardly roast potatoes. I could say more cant be bothered. We were charged wrong but persisted to get the £1.50 off to make it correct. Over priced, poor food, dirty environment to start, tired out and in much need of a full refurbishment. Wont be revisiting.

Stopped with a work colleague today for tea. Excellent service where the staff walk around and check everything is ok. The waiter kept walking back into the conservatory to make sure the different tables were ok and if they needed anything. This is just excellent service. I had the meat if the day filled yorkshire. Wow. Great size portion, and really tasty my friend had the yorkshire wrap and took half of it home as it was huge. Again, excellent food. We will definitely return here. This is a great example of how to run a country pub with not over pricing food. The food was excellent. Thank you. Nice visit

We’ve been coming to The Crooked Billet for the past 6 years and loved the cosey pub lunch vibe. It has great sized portions for the price you pay. When I told a couple of local friends that we were coming today, they explained that they’ve had a couple of ‘average’ meals there now. But regardless, we went to see if this was a one off or not. Unfortunately this isn’t. The portions were not as good and our food was again just average and the mash potato was uncooked in parts (hard potato). I didn’t see one fan either in the pub after a long week of a heatwave, the pub was unbareable to sit and enjoy. Surely a few fans won’t break the bank? Disappointed as I’ve previously rated this a 5 star pub. When I looked in the kitchen, the chefs looked no older than 18.. maybe they’ve lost the staff, who knows. The staff didn’t ask how our food was to give them this feedback in person.

Called in for a lunchtime meal with friends. As it was a hot day, we sat out in the bear garden. Place is dog friendly. The drinks and food were all waited service at the table. Good choice of food on the menu at reasonable prices. I went for the giant Yorkshire pudding with potatoes veg and steak and kidney. Others had meat and potato pie, salmon and Yorkshire pudding with sliced beef. All arrived in a reasonable time and the portion size is large to say the least. Quality is excellent, no leftovers from our table. Choice of pudding also good. My wife said that the cheesecake was the best she'd tasted. Well worth a visit.

Went there today with friends and what a great experience.the staff were very friendly and helpful.had the home meat pie it was the most delicious pie I have ever had my wife had the salmon and again delicious.the prices were very good and the lay out of the pub was great.Would recommend a visit to this pub you will not be disappointed.Well done to all the staff

Great giant Yorkshire pudding and fantastic gluten free / vegetarian option. Also very knowledgeable about food allergies and options. The dogs also enjoyed the experience and now not allowed on the furniture as requested in previous reviews. Highly recommended and we'll be back.

Delicious lunch from the steak pie, filled yorkshire pudding to the burger! All fantastic, tasty and filling. Great service even though very busy. Not the cheapest but definitely worth it.
