Our first visit today and definitely won't be the last... A real gem of a pub. The roast dinners were beautiful - tasty, veg cooked perfectly, huge crispy Yorkshire puds and lots of meat. The service was great - polite, friendly and professional. Bathrooms were clean. Easy to park. Thank you, will definitely be back again!

Wow, what a gem of a restaurant! We were staying just south of York for a mini break and we found this awesome country pub after a quick search on Google Maps. We inadvertently stumbled across one of the best restaurants we'd ever been to. The food was absolutely to die for. I'm just back at my hotel and I'm still day dreaming over the gravy served with the ballotine of rabbit. And the cottage pie that came with it....oh my god...it was heaven. I would've licked the plate clean if I could. The chef is a genius. The staff told us he trained in a Michelin starred restaurant and I can well believe it. And the best bit...the value. Two courses and and soft drink came to £30 each....for a fine dining experience!!! If this restaurant was near where I lived I'd be there for every special occasion going. Our waitress was so friendly and cheerful and the chef even popped over to say hi, and happily gave me some gravy secrets. Please support this amazing new chef and team. They deserve to do well. A cosy, friendly pub with fine dining flavour sensation food at down to earth prices.

This is a fabulous country pub and if I was able to give it more stars, I would. If this was closer to home, we would be here all of the time and we would probably be the size of a house. We stumbled upon the pub through a quick search for nearby food places to the Premier Inn nearby and it was such a wonderful, flavourful meal with lovely friendly staff. I opted for the burger which was really tasty, especially the beef with cheese combination and the triple cooked chips are probably worth coming in for on their own. Beautifully crispy and piping hot when they arrived. My fella opted for the rabbit ballotine as he hadn't tried rabbit before and although it looks small, it came with a cottage pie side. The gravy was especially delicious (homemade stock with port and wine from the secrets we managed to find out from the chef) and the potato topping on the pie was creamy with a glorious cheesy flavour. We opted for puddings too (apple Tarte tatin and lemon meringue pie) and we ate them before we could take a picture 😂 The pub itself is a good size with free parking at the back and an accessible entrance. We did phone ahead to book but as it's midweek it wasn't necessary. I honestly don't know why it wasn't absolutely packed, because it was stunning and I can't recommend this place enough!

Oh what a night, as the Four Seasons once sang! We've enjoyed the Yorkshire Tapas at The Castle Inn Country Pub in Cawood a few times, so were very much looking forward to a return to sample the new Spring menu, and what a delight it was! A wonderful experience from the moment we walked in the door. We had a lovely circular table (so much easier to talk to everyone than when you're just side by side) in the charming conservatory and the evening started beautifully when we were presented with an almost 'amuse bouche' of a most delicious, soft bread with an amazing dip (which I've already forgotten the description of, but who cares? The memory of the taste will linger on)! For starters, we had a gorgeous Cured Mackerel Fillet with a pickle yoghurt & dill dressing - pitch perfect, and so light (there's nothing worse than huge or filling starters that spoil your enjoyment of a main course). Then, we each had something different: The Castle Burger - (or rather, two burgers) - wow, it was impressive and the person who had it said it was exactly as a burger should be. The Beer Battered Haddock was proclaimed another triumph - a solid, beautifully cooked piece of fish in the lightest of batters, which melted in the mouth, plus the usual accompaniments - this dish was for someone who usually runs a mile from a mushy pea, but these weren't your average Joes. They were, apparently, a taste sensation! The Rump of Lamb with pea purée, wild garlic, smoked potato & port jus was so pretty, we all just stared at it in a reverential silence for a moment. It was also declared absolutely delicious! I chose the Confit Salmon sitting on a wild grain risotto and buttered samphire with a zingy lemon balm. I struggle to eat large plates of food, but I could seriously have eaten it all over again when I'd finished because it was so delightful! Despite all being full, we were tempted by the dessert menu to try the Apple Tart Tatin with clotted cream and the Chocolate Mousse with stem ginger. We gobbled them up so quickly, we forgot to take photos! We took our daughter and her partner along, who are massive foodies and eat out all the time, mostly in their home town of Harrogate. They were blown away with how good the food was, the prices, the pub decor and the warm and friendly staff and can't wait to come and stay with us again so we can have a re-visit! A huge thank you to all the team at the Castle Inn for helping us have the perfect family night out! Note to add: tried several times to upload photos (making sure they fitted the TripAdvisor guidelines) but the review wouldn't submit with them attached, so sadly had to remove. Shame, as the dishes looked as beautiful as they tasted.

I've been to this pub in the past and have generally had pleasant experiences, particularly with their food offerings. However, my recent visit left much to be desired. Upon entering the pub on a recent weekend, my partner and I requested a table for two with the intention of enjoying some food. We were promptly seated but then endured a lengthy wait to be served. It wasn't until another group inquired about a table that we were informed there was no availability for food as the pub was fully booked. This revelation came as a disappointment, especially considering the lack of proactive communication from the staff regarding the situation. It would have been greatly appreciated if the staff had been more attentive and informed us of the food availability status upon seating us. This would have allowed us to make alternative dining arrangements earlier, preventing unnecessary delays and frustration. While I've had positive experiences at this pub in the past, this recent incident highlights the need for improved communication and customer service to ensure a more satisfactory dining experience for patrons.

Clean campsite with spacious pitches, quiet at night, the toilet block was clean and warm with a heater, rare in alot of campsite toilet blocks in winter. Great value for money with the electric hookup, would we stay here again....most definitely so if you're staying up this way visiting Selby and looking for a campsite with a great pub, this is the place.

We ordered wine and food , each dish was amazing we had Garlic mushrooms , Prawns , Halloumi , and venison scotch eggs , stew and dumplings. Pork Belly. Cheese and biscuits 😋 and the special dessert rhubarb in Yorkshire pudding . We were all impressed with every dish . Along with the decor , nice lighting with candles and been warm next to a lovely fire we had a lovely evening. I can't not mention the 2 young waitresses who were so attentive and had a laugh with us , and of course the chef Ash and Liam who came to check if everything was ok thank you we can't wait to return . From the outset, a very warm welcome from Liam as we entered the pub who presented me with the best choice of non- alcoholic beers I’ve seen in any pub/restaurant. A warm and vibrant, cosy atmosphere. The warm welcome continued as we were shown to our table. Both of the young waitresses were lovely - efficient, super friendly and up for a laugh and who would have guessed that for one of them, it was there first job as a waitress? We didn’t know quite what to expect from a ‘Yorkshire Tapas’, but we were all bowled over by every dish. Delicious flavours from pub classics to some bold combinations. We chose: Crispy potato layered cake, Flank steak, Pork belly, chicken and leek pie, venison scotch egg, fish and chips, prawns, Hake loin, scallops and everyone delivered a wow! We will definitely return when we visit my brother and sister in law. Wishing you every success, you deserve it!

Lovely, recently refurbished pub. Tried the new tapas menu. Enjoyed by all the party. My only feedback was, as a vegetarian I didn't feel like the veggie tapas options made up a full meal. They felt more like sides (especially the broccoli). A veggie stew, ratatouille, veggie pie or something more substantial would have been a nice option

A recently taken over, beautifully refurbed country pub and restaurant in Cawood, south of York, the Castle Inn is an absolute pleasure to visit. The new owner has a fabulous eye for style and detail, even down to the table numbers and table 'reserved' signs! The restaurant exudes a welcoming, warm country-pub vibe, with subtle fabrics and furnishings and the all-important low-lighting to create the perfect dining ambience. Spoilt for choice by the new Yorkshire tapas menu, we opted on our first visit for the Beef & Onion Stew with Dumplings, the Venison Scotch Egg with wholegrain mustard dip (this is surely going to be one of THE best-sellers?!), Half Pint Prawns in a Brandy Yoghurt Marie Rose Sauce with Anchovy Toast and the Fish, Chips & Mushy Peas. Completely stuffed by the end, having shared and eaten every morsel—and not by nature dessert people—we were tempted to try a Seasonal Crumble (on this occasion, winter berries) and Custard and the Yorkshire Pudding with Stewed Rhubarb and Clotted Cream. WOW! The puds almost out-shone the mains! Delicious flavours, beautifully cooked and presented, with the dishes coming as and when ready, meant we could dine in leisurely fashion, enjoy our drinks and each dish as it came, without feeling remotely rushed as you so often do in restaurants where they can't seem to wait to get your table back. This is definitely tapas with a Yorkshire topping! Highly recommended, and so much so, we're booked to return next week and are already arguing over which dishes to choose next! (Photos don't do justice to how gorgeous everything was - and the fish and chips was attacked so quickly, some of it had gone before I got a photo. The mushy peas were on another level, by the way - delicious flavour and for those who are mushy pea averse, give them a go. You won't regret it!)

Meal out for a birthday today, lovely setting and food but largely let down by front of house service which will benefit from some training. Too long from sitting to ordering drinks and latterly food, no courtesy checks, empty glasses left at the end of the table to the point that we moved them to a vacant table just to have some space (even after asking the front of house staff to clear them away). Drinks order arrived wrong, food items were missing from our order, as was clean cutlery (and no steak knives) between courses. Waiter stopped clearing our table to clear another one which had no one sat at it, despite other tables being available for new customers. The food was delicious and hot on arrival, the drinks themselves were fine and the room is done out nicely. Service noticeably improved when a 3rd member of the front of house team came on duty, with none of the above listed issues when service was handed over. Dog friendly is nice bonus.

Food was good. Sadly, organisation is letting customer experience down. Took 20 min to get our drinks (7 people) ordered, another 10 to get them delivered (there was 4 tables), then 15 minutes to be allowed to place our food order. Then another 25 minutes to get starters, and it's not complicated fresh homemade stuff, more like your standard cheese sticks, bread etc. All in all, first 2 courses took 3 hours from our arrival to be finished (and we're not that slow to eat...). Food was very good though. Just everything took ages, and no one from service said a word about it, not a sorry, not an explanation, not checking if we're happy... I wouldn't go back or recommend it. Even on a day where I have plenty of time, it would still be sluggishly slow.

Located in a quaint little village, the restaurant pub is a traditional pub, Old fashioned, but filled with charm. I used to be a regular at this pub 15 years ago when I lived on the lordship, it has changed very little since then. Outside the seating area is all wooden benches where you have to swing your legs over to seat yourself, not ideal for those with mobility issues. These benches are also very uncomfortable owing to the seating part being very narrow. This area is used by dog owners, so be prepared to be seated near many dogs. If you want to pop out with your dog, this is certainly the place for you. We initially picked outside, but due to the uncomfortable seats we was relocated inside without any fuss. The servers were lovely, very attentative and they certainly deserve a 5* rating. Inside has a lovely feel. We visited whilst it was quiet and were the only ones seated in the restaurant. For 3 adult sized main meals and 1 tap water drink, plus 2 half pint lemonaide and lime drinks, the cost was £60. Regrettably the 2 8oz rump steaks were filled with lots of gristle. This spoilt it. It was hard to chew and plenty of bits had to be spat out and left on the plate. At nearly £20 per steak, this is really poor. Since we were there for food only, this really dragged the star rating down. The third dish was a cauliflower steak. This is a slice of small cauliflower which is cut in a circle and is approximately 1.5cm thick. For £13.99, this is a poor sized portion. All of us had to fill up on the chips. The salad is a garnish and not really a salad. The steak dish was accompanied by 3 small cherry tomatoes, 1 small beefsteak mushroom, and a cress garnish. The cauliflower steak was the same. The mushroom tasted beautiful as did the cauliflower steak. The steak taste was nice when there wasn't gristle. When asked if everything was OK, we did say yes as none of us could be bothered with the uncomfortable discussion of sharing our disappointment. But we wouldn't get desert based upon the main dish and the lovely pub setting won't be enough to draw us back. If they had better quality steak, they'd have served it, so I assume this is their standard. We tipped the server a £5. She deserved every penny.

Average at best. Meal for 8 for Mother's Day. Prawn Cocktail starters was average. Nothing fancy about it. Just plain prawn, seafood sauce and lettuce. No seasoning or any attention to detail. Portions of prawns weren't evenly dished out. I personally got probably a large spoonful of prawns while my 10 year olds portion was plentiful. I'm not sure who was dishing out the portions, but it was very inconsistent. I went for the lamb dish and the lamb was cold, slightly less done than what I would expect for lamb. Tons of fat on the cut. Served with veg, we got a poor choice of 3. Rock hard broccoli and certainly under cooked. Gravy was watered down. My dish was served with a Yorkshire pudding and 1 whole roast potato..... Why just 1? It's a bit of a strange portion for a main meal. The service was fast, and the staff were friendly. Great location and decor is well done. However at £25-30 for a 2-3 course meal and then drinks..... Certainly not value for money. The food was simply not that good for what you pay. I struggled to even leave a 3 star review to be honest.

This review covers both the camp site and the restaurant. Camping at the Castle was a pleasurable and relaxing experience. The site is quiet, clean, tidy and friendly. More geared up to camper vans and caravans, but great for tents too. Electric hookup was a bonus. Only one male and one female shower, but no long waits (guess the caravaners use their own facilities). All nice and clean. The pub's restaurant is very good. We were there for four nights and ate there three times, including an excellent Sunday lunch. The restaurant is very popular and gets very busy. I'd really recommend pre-booking. Some people turned up Sunday and weren't able to eat as they were booked up. The Castle is one of three pubs in the village, but the only one that serves food. There's also a lovely cafe/post office/deli/general store/off licence a five minute walk from the site. The pub staff are all lovely, very friendly and welcoming. New electrics on all pitches (which you now have to buy a £5 card,we used £1,70 during our stay) it's advertised as spacious pitches but only big enough for caravan and car or caravan and awning leaving your car in the car park. We had a large family camping next to us in 3 tents with in 4ft of us. Quaint pub friendly staff food was tasty and well prepared. Location, it is set in a quiet place in the country. The perfect get away for an escape from the hurly burly of every day life. Would visit again

We have stayed here in our campervan twice as the little village is lovely. The food at the pub is excellent and everyone is very friendly. Good facilities and electric hook up is available. We will be returning soon.

We spent a quiet night at the campground behind the pub. The price was reasonable. The facilities were simple but clean. We also had a tasty dinner at the pub. We will come back.

Meal was OK but overpriced. Service from the food was shocking. It was not busy and waiting staff were stood around talking. Main meal arrived in good time. Waited 20 minutes for plates to be cleared. Asked if we would like deserts which we did. After waiting for over 15 minutes we paid the bill without having desert.

Calling the erection of decking and picnic benches in the car park, clearly set up for social distancing, a "beer garden" would be overly generous. Inside doesn't fair much better. The tables, and oddly the window sills, were sticky. Both beer and wine selections were limited, though a good alcohol free beer was provided in bottles. I had the fried fish which was okay but 95% of the menu was fried food and burgers. Would have loved a salad but I suspect they'd have fried that too. Only the staff saved this. They were all lovely and attentive. On leaving I felt more sorry for them than I did the patrons who only had to visit once.

It has the potential to be an excellent gastro pub but never gets it right, warm beer and very average food. It hasn't any local competition which is unfortunate ☹️

A regular stop off whenever we’re in Selby. The food is fantastic whether it’s a quick snack, full on Sunday lunch or special occasion. Mat, Gemma, Di, Chaba & all the staff are polite, respectful and… efficient. An enjoyable experience. Can’t recommend highly enough.

We took a bit of a detour from our journey South to visit The Hidden Tearoom, and what a great choice it was! So many delicious homemade goodies and a very warm welcome from Edi. The Scone-wiches (cheese scone with bacon, onion marmalade, cream cheese and salad) were fabulous and there were too many lovely cakes and puddings to choose from. Highly recommended.

We have eaten here with friends 4 times over the last 2 years, but it has never really impressed us. The food is OK, but not really worth the cost. The chips were hard and dry, which I don't understand as they are supposed to be home made! Also, the drinks have always been expensive, but £4.55 for 1 pint and one half pint of lime and soda is ridiculous. The most we have ever paid in the past is £3, but often less than that!!
