We popped in for Sunday lunch with a couple of friends, and we were extremely well looked after by Callum, Harry Jack and Esther The staff are very friendly, and the portions are enormous Indeed, there are probably too many vegetables served with the food we had several different types ! The belly pork was really good, and so was the roast beef, and there are also a number of vegetarian options The atmosphere is more like a refectory rather than a restaurant I see the staff were extremely good The chicken and mushroom pâté was very nice, and there was a selection of eight different puddings If I had known how big the main courses were that I would probably got I’ve had a starter The wind is limited. The toilets are very clean and the bill was very reasonable. I shall look forward to our next visit

The food was very good, which surprised me after Reading the comments left by previous guests. We found that the menu was limited but that maybe is because of the current circumstances we find ourselves in. We were staying in the hotel and had breakfast and evening dinner there. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, you could not fault them. I would certainly recommend the croft to anyone who wants a decent meal in a friendly atmosphere. We would come back.

Just left Croft spa, had a shocking Sunday lunch, first thing was the cigarette butts outside & several empty packets discarded, as for the food!!!yorkshire pudding flat & raw inside, meat had no flavour, gravy was like water, we did complain & the barman said we were the only ones complaining, well maybe our standards are higher, but that had to be the worse Sunday lunch we've had.. will never return & will tell people.

We attended the croft hotel for Christmas day lunch that we had been looking forward to it was the worst Christmas lunch my family and myself have ever had the starter was inedible it was some kind of warm prawn cocktail which was disgusting it. The prawns were of very poor quality and over cooked. The sorbet which tasted like a frozen fresh orange was not like any sorbet we have ever had. No one could eat it . The main meal was cold and again very poor quality. In in whole the meal was terrible. Although we did complain it fell on deaf ears and were told to contact Best western ourselves. Which we will be doing . We have visited many restaurants in the past and some have been owned by Best western which were really good. We feel our family Christmas day lunch was spoilt. We will not be returning to the Croft and would definitely not be recommending to anyone.

I dined here for lunch with an old friend on the 8th October & discovered it had been pleasantly redecorated since our previous visit two years ago. I ordered steak & chips but had to change my order to gammon & chips when I discovered the surcharge overpriced the steak at £23 which I consider too high just for steak & chips. So I ordered gammon, salad & chips instead, which was adequate for £9 but could have frankly included more than 6 measly 'posh' chips for the price...But on reflection my dessert was very good & reasonably priced.

We commented on the speed of that part of service. This venue has changed hands so many times over the years that the new owners should give up now as success at this rate is impossible.

Horrible, simply Horrible! I visited The Croft Gastropub just to see what it was like and what the prices were like etc and took my beautiful Girlfriend, her Mam and Step Dad for a Sunday Lunch this past Sunday (05/07/2015). When I visited I was told it was a lovely Sunday Carvery with the full works by a member of staff, the reality was so much different. To start off with the meat was like very thin sliced microwave meat with the mashed potato even worse than a microwave meal! we got 3, yes 3!, roast potatoes on the plate and the gravy was none existant. Well there was a bit but I mean a bit, such a small amount they may as well have not bothered with it. They brought the carrots, broccoli and cauliflower and I had none but my girlfriend said that they were freezing cold too! The whole thing smacked of microwave rubbish and at £45 for 4 meals and drinks was it worth it? I say NO! Oh and I had a hair, a human hair in my meal and did we get money knocked off my meal? No BUT we did get 2 drinks knocked off the bill so I cannot really complain much but I did have to take a dead greenfly off the table before the meals came out and I saw an Ant climbing the wall, a bloody Ant! Fair to say I won't be going back again and if I could give it a zero, I would but TripAdvisor says I have to give it a 1, a 1! it wasn't worth 1! Never ever!!! The staff members were friendly but at the bar they weren't that fast a service as you would expect and there was greasy oily thingy-ma-bob floating on the top of Pepsi, even though I asked for Diet Pepsi, a Diet!!

We booked at the Croft as a change from places closer to home, as we had enjoyed eating there two or three times over the past couple of years. What a mistake! We waited two hours to be served, which meant we didn't eat until about 10.15 pm. This was ridiculously late for all of us, but way past my youngest child's bed time. If we had been dining as a couple we would have simply left, but as this was a special occasion for our family of five, we decided to stay. The meals, when they came were reasonably tasty and well presented. Unfortunately we were too tired and hungry to appreciate them. The waiting staff were pleasant and apologetic in what felt like a personal capacity. There didn't seem to be anyone taking an overview of the situation, and one waiter kept coming over to check we were Ok, and reacting with surprise when we said we hadn't been served yet. No one resembling a manager gave any explanation or apology.A reduction was made to our bill.We eat out a lot. Unfortunately we can't add The Croft to our list of regular places to go.

The tempting offer of Pie Night from this smart gastro pub couldn't go unnoticed! As pie connoisseurs we had to see how The Croft measured up and we were not disappointed.Rich soft steak and ale filling topped with a buttery flaky lid served with baby carrots and peas, our choice of fries (we could have chosen chunky chips) and and a little jug of extra gravy. We didn't order a starter so the little home made fruity bread roll and butter kept us going until the main event arrived and we couldn't fit in one of the delicious sounding puddings unfortunately so our review is based on one course. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the dining room was tastefully decorated with smart crockery and tableware. This was our first visit to the Croft and we were very impressed, a definite place to bring family on their next visit

Booked a table. Got left at the end of the bar waiting to be seated. after 10 mins we reminded them and got Sat down. To be told there was no brie souffle or sirloin steak left. at 8 o clock. Not a good start. So we asked for glarlic mushrooms and got them instead. Got our starter after about 15 mins then was Sat till 9 o clock still with our starter plates. So about 40 minutes we were ignored for. And 8 times some one walked past us to seat and serve people on the 3 tables either side of us . Baring in mind it was a 4 course meal aswell. So we decided to leave without paying . Furious because no where else had tables left at that time of the night. And we had drove 30 minutes to get there. Fair to say we are not happy. Never ever wrote a bad review but I think this is deserved. The staff were useless. It's just basic waiting. You come out of the kitchen with something you return to it with something else.

Following a disaster of a family meal (reviewed in the Croft Hotel section) we were offered a complimentary meal in the private dining room, which we chose to have on our granddaughter's birthday. It all started so well - newly decorated room, beautifully set table, very attentive staff. Unfortunately, it soon started going downhill. The promised bottles of wine were not actually offered, but as 3 of us were driving, the others were happy to settle for ordering drinks by the glass. The starters were promising, the prawn cocktail was not the same self-assembly affair as previously, the black pudding salad was said to be excellent. The soup, leek and potato (again) would have been excellent, but again it was not nearly hot enough. At least it had not grown a skin this time. The soup eaters had to ask for soup spoons, and to be fair the waitress apologised and admitted it was her oversight. She seemed genuinely anxious to make sure everything went smoothly.Main courses - scampi and chips is usually a safe bet for diner and kitchen. The deep frozen scampi was as good as you would expect, piping hot, but the frites were lukewarm and the peas were cold. The other main courses (a high dependency on pork throughout the menu) received mixed receptions. Then service seemed to disappear. Orders for puddings were taken, along with orders for coffees and teas. The coffees and teas arrived and were consumed long before the puddings eventually arrived. My pudding - allegedly sticky toffee pudding - was simply a square of dark sponge traybake with a caramelised liquid and a ball of ice cream. One of the industrial microwaved puddings would have been preferable. The sponge itself was cold and the sauce was lukewarm.Coffee would have been excellent had it been hot. There is a theme here - cold food. Whether it is because the kitchen is at the opposite end of the building to the diners, or the waiting staff are too slow in delivering it - certainly at one stage one sole waiter was back and forward delivering two dishes at a time while the rest of us waited politely until everyone was served - needs to be addressed. To top it all, having been promised that bottles of wine were included in the deal, a substantial bill for the drinks (much less was consumed than if the bottles had been provided) was presented, followed by the inevitable embarrassing discussion of how much was due.Sadly, what was supposed to be an attempt to recover their reputation was not a success. If this had been our first visit to the Croft, there was nothing that would have made us want to come back. For a showpiece meal, it was bordering on disaster.

Following our last experience & formal complaint, we (9 of us) received a generous offer to restore our faith in this gastropub. We ate in the private dining room, the service was attentive on arrival, the ham hock terrine with pickle was lovely & the prawn cocktail was a vast improvement and there were positive comments on the soup.We had a variety of mains - scampi, Thai curry, black pudding & bacon salad. All received very positive comments and a huge improvement on our previous experience & the portions were generous.Sadly we had to ask for our drinks order to be taken during the meal, the complimentary wine did not materialise. There was a delay before the Puds arrived & as with last time apologies (busy again!). Coffee arrived before puds.Again there was confusion over the 'bill' which took time to resolve and required me reminding them of their offer made, that was embarrassing, leaving me feeling I misunderstood what was so generously offered to restore our faith.I have struggled with the service score as quite obviously several servers were trying hard but there do seem to be flaws in this area. So I have marked higher in recognition of the attempt made to redress.

I have not felt the desire to write on trip adviser for a while but was left extremely disappointed by our visit to this 'gastropub' today. We were a family party of 7 adults, 2 kids & a baby, we booked our table on the Friday before our visit (sunday 2nd Nov), we arrived promptly for our booking at 12.30, drinks were slow to be served but we were all catching up so not a problem at this point. We went through to the gastropub for our Sunday dinner, as we sat down we were warned there was another large table & there will be a short delay.... we laughed it off and suggested they keep the bread buns coming! The Sunday lunch menu is fairly simple, set menu offering 3 courses. Our order was taken within about 10 - 15 mins, the starters arrived at about 1.20pm, 50 minutes after we arrived. The prawn cocktail were served in a DIY manner i.e.. sauce salad & prawns all separate on the plate - most odd, the goats cheese (we had 4) were all different sized portions and really too big for the sauce with it, the soup had quite obviously been sitting under the hot lamp - skin to balance a spoon on! Our table was cleared in dribs and drabs with plates being taken over the baby's head! We had to order our own drinks at the bar as there was no interest in our table from the serving staff. At about 2pm we were told our main courses were being plated up, when we suggested this was really not an acceptable delay, we were told they were very busy and what else could they do but apologise!..... The main courses arrived at 2.15pm, nearly 2 hours after we arrived in the gastro pub! By this time we were not impressed - this was not a 'small delay'! The meals look nicely presented, the beef portions varied in sizes on each plate with one plate receiving half a cow! Veg were cooked al dente and were very tasty but each adult had a different selection, and whilst the roast potatoes were tasty they were tiny!! No wonder service takes so long! The pork was nice and the kids goujons were generous. We had ordered an extra portion of veg for the baby, we asked where this was when table checked half way through the meal... this came when we were ending our main courses beautifully blended (nice surprise but not requested) but frankly too late.We were all now truly fed up and aware that around us the same issues were being raised on other tables including the large party who having arrived before us were still waiting to order dessert! We thought the best thing would be to leave..... but guess what there was no-one available to give us a bill, this was the icing on the cake!It was amazing that despite so many staff around no-one wanted to give any service, the bar maid was falling apart dealing with the complaints and it was becoming a farce! We made our thoughts very clearly known, and were offered a reduction in our bill.... it was reduced from 12 covers to 10.... we were a party of 9.5! The manager type person again apologised that they were so busy, we pointed out that there were only the two tables in the area we were in and a handful of others, apparently there was a large party elsewhere (doesn't look good for function nights!).... so surely if they are that busy, they should not have taken our booking! Hugely frustrating meal, we have all left our local hotel/bar frustrated, disappointed, ripped off and queuing to get on to the computer to write on Tripadvisor! And finally possibly the most annoying part of it is... we had used this as a taster for booking our family Christmas Lunch, not a chance now, although I suppose if we order now there is a chance of having it by the end of Christmas day!!

Popped along there tonight with my dad who lives locally, very quiet, but fair enough for a Tuesday night mid October. There was no background music so you could hear a mouse fart or, in our case you could hear the conversation at a table the other side of the 'gastro pub'. The music was turned on later however, which did improve the ambiance slightly. I ordered the homemade burger with tomato relish and chips, dad ordered the bacon chop with chips. Dad's meal was ok, bit disappointed with his chips which were skinny fries, very dry and coated with salt. My burger however was appalling there was more bulking agent (bread / seasoning mix?) than meat in the burger itself, the texture was awful and it tasted like 1980's vegemix burger YUCK. I couldn't eat the burger and the fries were like cardboard, very dry and again coated with salt. When the waiter took away the plates he asked if everything was ok, I told him it was the worst burger I have ever been given, so he asked if I would like another one? NO ! Upon leaving I asked a lady behind the bar if she was the landlady, she told me she was not & the owner didn't come into the place, he was just a director. I was presented with a bill for TWO burgers and a bacon chop! However when I explained the problem she did remove both burgers from the bill. Even though dad lives locally we will not be going back.

This isn't the first time that we have visited The Croft Hotel, meals there in the past have been very good so we thought that we go on a week night. We have booked in advance for 6pm, when we arrived the place was empty. The place was like a morgue devoid of atmosphere, not even any muzak. Our order was taken and 30 minutes later our starters arrived. Even then one of the starters was wrong, so my wife asked again what she had originally ordered, this arrived 10 minutes later. Around 7pm the main course arrived, we both order the homemade burger, for £11.50 each I expected better. The bun was untoasted and dry, a miserable few leaves constituted as salad and “Mc Donald’s” style French fries. Very disappointing. We have eaten this meal before here in the past and the quality and standard was much better. The bill mentions a discretionary 10% service charge would be included. To whoever owns this hotel: you quite obviously need reminding that you are in competition with, The Otter & Fish, The Bay Horse, The Rockcliffe Hotel, and The Comet. All of which serve provide a much better dining experience than you, in fact we only came here because The Otter & Fish was closed on this particular evening. However because of the excellent food that we have had in the past we decide to visit you on this evening, well never again. Our experience confirms the rumour which I heard, that this hotel was /is in financial trouble. It doesn’t surprise me.

Just to let you know that in March my daughter who actually lives in Croft village, informed me that after my husband and myself returned from a special holiday to celebrate my 60th birthday she had arranged for an evening meal at her local, with a few friends and close family to celebrate my birthday.I was informed on the morning that i should pack a few clothes as my husband and myself were staying over at the Croft. When arriving at the Croft some family and friends were already enjoying a drink. I had imagined we were eating in the dining room as we had done on a number of occasions. You can imagine my surprise when i was led into a private dining room with a beautifully laid large table for myself and guests. My daughter who is a textile designer, so very 'arty and crafty' had approached the Croft management about the possibility of using this room she had spotted on a previous visit. The room had been beautifully decorated especially for the occasion by my daughter's, who had been allowed to go along earlier in the day and decorate until her heart's content. The management had even provided a separate table to display a beautiful birthday cake.We had a fantastic three course meal with wine and champagne and the quality of the food was exceptional. All my family and friends commented on the food quality the presentation and the excellent service we received. Nothing seemed too much trouble, we were allowed to play our own music via an iPhone using the hotels equipment. The ambiance of the whole room was wonderful. My husband and myself stayed over in a wonderful super king sized bed in a room with all the facilities of a 4 star hotel.I would personally like to thank the Croft management team for allowing my daughter to take charge in decorating the room and thank all staff for their wonderful service.I will not hesitate in recommending this hotel which I know also offer wonderful wedding packages - I could not think of anything nicer than getting married in the traditional old village church then popping across the road to such an accommodating hotel for the wedding celebrations. Thank you once again for making my 60th Birthday special. xx

(thumbs up).My husband ordered the tortellini with squash & was very happy, down side, not many on his plate, bearing in mind it was a main course. My daughter & I ordered the beef dinner, very nice, the vegetables came in separate bowls, very well presented, thick quality paper napkins, instead of flimsy ones, fresh flowers & very clean tables .We all had pudding & again very happy, decided we had found a little gem of a place & would make it our weekly, Sunday treat. The staff were very young & friendly, without being full on. Everything went so smooth.(NOW IT STARTS TO SLOWLY SLIDE)!!!!Our next visit was Jan 26, 2014. No one to welcome us, no staff at the bar, fed up of waiting,we wandered in & found a table. Still no staff. Eventually someone spotted us, we ordered drinks, waited & waited, we reminded the staff, eventually they came. We ordered our food, waited & waited. Bearing in mind the room was practically empty of patrons. We both ordered the beef dinner, the food eventually arrived, instead of the vegetables being well presented in separate little bowls, the cheese cauliflower, mashed carrot & swede & the other veg, were all squashed inside 1 slightly larger bowl, than the 3 smaller ones we were offered the previous Sunday. The tiny salad potatoes had been cooked to an inch of their lives, like chewing rubber. The carrot & swede mash was so dry & tasteless, not creamy & fresh like the first time.We ordered more drinks, again waited an age, the place was empty, why on earth did it take so long? We both couldn't believe in one week how it had ground to a snails pace. The place needed a good dusting. We both agreed to try it the next week, just in case it was a one off.(GOING, GOING, GONE)!!!!!We arrived Sunday 1 Feb 2014, again no staff in sight, no one manning the bar, the place had very few patrons, we waited an age & decided just to find a table again.Waited & waited, just as we decided to go, a young lad with dark hair & glasses came to take our orders, we explained we had waited & he did apologise, we told him we would be dining for lunch & later a couple would be joining us & we would have drinks & deserts together. We ordered 1 x large dry wine & 1 x cappuccino, he delivered 1 x small white wine & said the latte' would arrive soon!!!! we explained it was a cappuccino!!When it arrived I mentioned my drink should have been large, he said the bar staff must of decided to change it to a small!!! (no offer of any more). My husband ordered, steak with chunky chips & I ordered the pork with apple compote. Yes! you have guessed!! my husband received a beef dinner!! I received the pork, no compote. The plates were swimming in gravy & guess what!!! the veg again was squashed to death in 1 bowl, the potatoes again were ridiculous. I mentioned there was no apple compote, he said he would get me some if I really wanted it!!!!We explained he got the order wrong again & may be a note pad, would come in handy for him.He later returned & said my husbands meal would be free of charge, but we are not that kind, it was a mistake, we had eaten most of it, just not to cause a fuss & would pay for the meals. While waiting for our friends, we were relaxing & couldn't help seeing the change in the place, the blinds were askew, some looked broken, dust all over them, flowers dying in vases on the tables, floors needed a clean, what a shame to spend all that money on the place & let it slide. Our friends arrived ordered drinks & deserts, one friend asked what cheeses were on the menu, the waiter said he didn't know, but if he didn't want a certain cheese he would give him a choice of another, we explained we needed to know what cheeses he had, so we could decide what not to have! so the waiter said Tell him what he didn't like!! it was like a comedy sketch, worn out we all decided to just have puddings. Then the sorting of the bill, he didn't have a clue how to sort the till, thank the lord the lovely girl behind the bar came to our aid & the lovely young guy with the blond funky hair.No wonder there was a 10% service charge on the bill, as no one would get a tip at this rate!!!The place needs someone with experience running the ship, not letting kids play restaurant dress up, serving the public. It needs to be constant every time, no excuses. A tip or two!! don't dine at the rear of the room, dine at the front, I think its too far for the staff to walk & give good customer care.Make sure your meal/drink choice, is written down.If bar staff do appear at your arrival, order drinks & beverages before you are seated.Ask for gravy in a jug.

I have been here 3-4 times for business networking meetings I last few months. Whilst we have not eaten from the regular menu I can confirm the quality of the food and particularly the presentation. If this is the standard of food when the profit margin must be minimal it says a lot for the restaurant and the management. Steaks, fish dishes and beef stroganoff I can confirm are excellent.

This isn't the first time we have visited The Croft, meals there in the past have been very good so we thought we would try the tea room.Terrible mistake. Our order was taken and the tepid teas and coffees arrived fifteen minutes later. Forty minutes after that the food arrived. After we asked the member of staff if we could have some plates to eat the food from we discovered stale scones, dry sandwiches and tasteless cakes. The food was awful but the service eclipsed this to quite an astonishing degree. From arrival to leaving the staff were miserable, unhelpful and anything was too much trouble. Taking our order the waitress was rude initially telling us we couldn't have a vegetarian afternoon tea unless we ordered in advance. Then, without apology, told us we could have a vegetarian option but couldn't have gluten free (which nobody had asked for). The bill mentions a discretionary 10% service charge would be included. I can only imagine this is because it would never be offered voluntarily. There are many better options locally so we won't be making a return visit.

I was a guest today at a Christmas Luncheon attended by 50+ people. All the food had been pre-ordered. The starter (seafood cocktail) was ok. The main course was most disappointing: 2 small slices of turkey, 1 chipolata, small round of stuffing, 3 tiny "bits" of potato & gravy. The vegetables for our table of 8 was sprouts, brocoli ( so hard it could not be cut) & mangetout - all together in 1 bowl. The cheese & biscuits were fine but a few people had ordered Christmas pudding, that too was a tiny portion. One cup of coffee & that was it......no mints or mince pies....nothing. The service I can only describe as amateur & at no time did any member of staff ask us if everything was ok. Altogether most disappointing. As I was a guest, I could not mention anything at the time. The other people on my table of 8 all felt the same. If I am invited here again, I would not attend!.

I now understand that the hotel has recently changed hands and they have certainly done a good job with the overall look of the place. But the food. . . was sensational! I only had lunch today, which was superb, but having looked at their evening menu and some of the upcoming specials, it will not be so long until my next visit. I spoke to somebody in charge (Ray) and he explained that they are trying to spread the word that it is now a great place to visit or to book a function. would agree and can recommend checking it out.I always thought this was a great location too (right next to the river in Croft).

The gastro pub area is beautifully decorated and feels spacious whilst welcoming. 3 soups and a prawn dish made up the starters which were all excellent and accompanied by fresh bread. 3 steaks plus a Thai chicken dish for mains were all very tasty and cooked perfectly as ordered. 2 brownies and 2 creme brûlée for dessert were also lovely and all beautifully presented. With drinks and coffees the bill came to £90 which we thought was excellent value. The service was very good, staff friendly and suitably attentive. I had the pleasure of attending a small function this weekend past at the Croft Hotel where I once used as my local bar and eatery. I stopped using it a few years ago due to bad experience with food standards and bad staff. I was reluctant about what I was going to find, but, to my pleasure I found the food to be excellently prepared and presented, tasteful and fulfilling. The costs of drinks also were reasonably priced. The staff were very polite, attentive and very helpful. However if I had one criticism it would be the bar is very small, shortage of appropriate glasses for relevant drinks, and shortage of staff serving with waiting time not acceptable. Overall a great night with that one only observation.

The Croft Hotel has undergone a transformation in the past year or so, from a rather sad and tatty place, to a more modern and vibrant hotel, tea room and themed evenings. I chose to go on their Thursday Steak Night and it was very busy, lively atmosphere, friendly bar staff and waiters. The local brew was good too - Flower Power from Aldburgh St John - just up the road and appropriate I thought as my business is also called Flower Power.I ordered a Rump steak, with watercress salad, pepper sauce (£1.50 extra) and chips. It arrived on a wooden chopping board, 8 chips artistically arranged, about 3 sprigs of watercress and a very nice, perfectly cooked steak. Delicious. The peppercorn sauce was also delicious. At first I thought 8 chips was a bit on the stingy side (we are in Yorkshire here and usually get decent portions) but actually, having eaten all my steak, it was sufficient. That could not be said for the watercress salad! What does salad say to you? Did it say watercress dressing? No. It said salad! So I was VERY disappointed with that ..... did comment to waiter but a polite smile and he was off!The only major downside was how DARK IT WAS. The whole area needs some professional lighting put in .... subtle, intimate and welcoming. It really was very murky and dismal, such a shame on a lovely sunny evening.Would I go again? Yes, I would. Would I ask for more salad - oh yes, definitely!

We had booked lunch as an impromptu 'wedding breakfast' and the food did not disappoint. We were a party of seven and half of us had the set menu of two courses for £12 - normally the set menu meals are slightly smaller than full price, but not in this case and were delicious (although we were surprised, as it was a Monday, that they didn't have enough of each choice - maybe delivery was due Tuesday!). There is lots of room for the children to play around and plenty of places from which to chose where you will sit. Alastair Matthieson is no stranger to the hospitality business and it shows. The only thing our grandchildren left was a bit of a mess but nobody seemed to mind. The tearoom hopefully should do well but it is possibly slightly pricey for Mum's popping in whilst waiting for their children from school etc but then you get what you pay for and here quality is the key. Trying hard to support local business! When there is a five star property in the village the new Croft needs to be proud of what it is and should be a good three star country inn. We dont need a Gastro experience that appears to cost more than that of Rockliffe, and the tea room was I am afraid to say a huge let down. Vert costly average fare with pretentious service and presentation.I noted we were not invited to fill out your comment card and to your credit we were not levied a service charge. However having noted my/our discomfort no effort was made to explore or correct this either! The straw that broke my camels back was actually getting the order wrong and not serving an included element which yes I could have pointed out but was too horiffied by how much the waitress seemed to assume I must like a wait for a fresh home made bakery item which was far from it!In a word though I try to remain constructive and positive I was left feeling very disappointed and having reflected on previous incarnations of this hotel I recall it warmer friendlier and plainly simple yet wonderful.

I have a couple of clients in Darlington, so I spend a few days/nights a month here. You will see that I have written a few reviews on some of the establishments around.A contact suggested I take a taxi out to The Croft (very cheap taxis in Darlington!). This was an old hotel that had become run down but someone had bought and chucked a pretty serious amount of money at he said. Brave person in 2013. I was intrigued as so many of these projects get it so horribly wrong. No - it was not wrong, not perfect, but what I saw was a good 4 star hotel basis in terms of presentation and basis. Professional staff who obviously came from high level hotel backgrounds, but not snooty. The aim is good gastro pub and certainly that was on the mark. I had two starters only as I am trying to keep my figure...(?). No query on this and both were substantial so I was glad I did. Good Pate with freshly toasted bread and then a Seafood Cocktail (can you beat the 70's Prawn Cocktail concept if well executed?). All fresh, tasty, quality ingredients. Well prepared and presented - and I am seriously picky! The wine list is good, but possibly a cheaper "house" wine would be a good move. My bottle of red was on the cold side, but was swiftly and courteously replaced with one from the bar shelf that was at a decent temperature. New place - these are tweaks they will learn.Atmosphere - a bit lacking. This is chicken and egg. It simply needs more people. A few more people will produce a buzz. A buzz will produce even more people...and so on. The Barman told me that the traditional tea shop (a la Bettys of Harrogate) is stuffed to the gills most days - perhaps the restaurant is next. A few on line offers on the restaurant? They are paying for the premises and staff anyway so some reasonable food deals would not cost much to do, early birds seem to work as it gives momentum. (I am a late bird though). So - really good place and I hope it succeeds. Had trouble finding it on Tripadvisor as it is under Croft on Tees, but I see it as Darlington. They need to change their TripA location as they are streets ahead of many Darlington offerings. Thanks for reading. If you found this review of any use to you, please click on the "helpful" button.

We live locally and have been meaning to try the restaurant/gastro pub for a while so we called in today as we are always keen to support local businesses. At 2pm on a Saturday afternoon the 'gastro pub' was completely empty which is not surprising as the menu is really catering for an evening crowd. We wanted a lighter lunch so were directed to the 'tea rooms' where they serve sandwiches etc. With only one table occupied it was very quiet. The decoration of the whole place is lovely with muted tones, a gorgeous pink spotty and floral tea room and the feel of the place is modern and very contemporary. We ordered a club sandwich, cheese savoury sandwich and a croque monsieur along with a glass of wine, latte and glass of tap water. We had to go for tap water as they only offered water in very large bottles which was too much for my 3 year old daughter. The food was just OK but for the price (£5.75 for a croque monsieur and £6.95 for a club sandwich) I had expected more. Don't get me wrong, these prices are fine if you are getting something adequate but these sandwiches were like opening a supermarket packet sandwich and putting it on a plate with a few crisps! My daughter is only 3 and she polished off the croque monsieur. It wasn't a childs portion or a childs price and she is not a big eater - adults beware!! The side order we placed never arrived but did make it onto the bill alongside a standard 10% service charge. The waitress cleared my husbands and my plate away before my daughter had finished which is something I really hate - its simply manners to wait until the table has finished eating. We won't be back - our bill was close to £27 which did not match the value or quality of food I expected and in only a 20 minute visit. I am more than happy to pay for good food and service but we left feeling thoroughly disappointed. There is a huge amount of local competition in Darlington and Northallerton so the Croft Spa needs to sort things out quickly. As an alternative try the Clubhouse at Rockliffe Hall, Bettys in Northallerton, The Imperial Express in Darlington or even M&S at Scotch Corner (!!) for much better food at very similar prices.

A side of chunky chips for £2.50 seemed reasonable until it arrived, a total of 8 chips! The prices were restaurant, not pub, prices, plus 10% service charge, simply over priced for what was on offer. It's sad as the place has been very well and sympathetically refurbished. 5 out of ten from us.Something will have to change before we return.

Just had lunch at the Croft hotel and I couldn't believe the difference since I was last there. Excellent atmosphere in the Gastro Pub, matched with excellent food. Recommend that you try the scotch egg starter.

Last night a group of 7 couples visited the newly refurbished Croft Hotel. What a great night, the food was very good the service excellent with the staff looking after us extremely efficiently for such a large party. I would highly recommended that you should give the new hotel a try again.

Went just to see what the new offer was like and how many people were there. Quite busy so decided to stay for a meal. We both ordered starter and main courses and were served with well presented well cooked food. Huge improvement on previous offer with former owner. Wine quite pricey but good selection available. The staff were really helpful and knowledgable about the menu. Thoroughly good evening and we'll be going again. I really hope they do well as it's a long time since its glory days. P.S. they also have a tearoom which is a welcome addition for the village as thee is nowhere of anyone to get refreshments when they visit to spend time at the river on a sunny day. Good luck to you all - don't let standards drop.

The Croft Hotel has a rather imposing and slightly eerie presence, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and found it to be a charming hotel. First and foremost, the food here is excellent! I admit my expectations of the bar meals were pretty low, but I was so impressed by the quality of my cottage pie and my husband's curry. One of the best meals of our trip. Breakfast was included, which is always a bonus, but even more so when 'breakfast' is such a comprehensive spread with options including more than just your average bacon and eggs (my husband had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs). Staff were friendly, the room was clean and had everything we needed, and best of all there was decent pressure in the shower. They are currently undergoing renovations, and it will be a fabulous venue when they are finished. Definitely worth staying here, highly recommended and fantastic value for money.

*This is a review solely for The Croft restaurant* I did not stay in the hotel but ate at The Croft restaurant for two successive nights (17/8/12 & 18/8/12). My boyfriend and I were visiting the nearby Croft racing circuit and wanted a nearby place to eat which served good quality food at good prices. We definitely found this at The Croft! Located only a few miles from the race circuit, it was a perfect location for an evening meal. We were served by enthusiastic, friendly and polite staff at the bar and whilst seated, great start. Each were informative and accommodating in our requests. The meals arrived and my boyfriend and I were definitely more than satisfied with the food. We both had chicken liver pate to start then Croft burger for me and lasagna for him. We enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service so much that we returned the following night to eat (same meals but in reverse!). Would definitely recommend a visit to this restaurant and on this basis, if the opportunity came up, I would gladly stay in the hotel.

My wife and I chose to eat here after a recommendation but never again. Firstly staff were rude and obstructive, young and not properly trained in customer service. We noticed how dirtly everything seemed to be from the bar to the table we were eventually seated at. Our drinks arrived in dirtly glasses and I noticed how dirty and stained the carpets were. I went to Reception which was unmanned and equally as grubby, dusty with stains on wooden floor. When our food arrived it was luke warm, tasteless and dried out! The owner seemed more interested in flirting with his young waitresses than making sure his customers were happy which we found embarrassing and awkward!Bad service, bad food, extremely dirty and no professional customer service, we would never recommend this place!

i was a guest at the bar/restuarant on a friday evening with my fiancee and family, having eaten here on other occasions and found the food good quality with ok service nothing exceptional.upon arriving on friday evening, it was very quiet, we ordered our meal off the set menu firstly the waiters/ess all seemed to be teenagers who had very little training in customer service all stood gossiping and not paying attention to the customerthey brought out the main courses and firstly the waiteress told us the plate was to hot to hand over and preceeded to plonk it on the nearest person.we ordered two steaks one cooked medium/well and one medium rare, the medium well steak came out shrunk within an inch of its life with a burnt outside, the medium rare was medium to well. I ordered the thai chicken curry which when came out wasnt even a whole chicken breast just a few chunks which were rubbery and very dried out ( almost like frozen chicken chunks)My partner and i sent our meals back ( my father didnt want to complain about his burnt steak), at this the restuarant manager or owner came over and said what did we want to do after spending over 15 minutes justifying his food, i explained it was up for justifying it but he should understand personal taste and in our opininion as customers we werent happy and would just like the two mains taken off our billAt this i can only say his attitude was appalling he villified my younger sister, saying her feedback wasnt important as she was younger than him ( hello she is a thirty something ) how rude,he said we had to pay otherwise he would call the police he admitted his attitude was wrong but continued to insult and threaten us!I always thought the customer was always right, never in 20 years of my senior retail managment career have i experienced such shocking customer service and i have travelled extensivelyI would urge anyone never eat here the food quality has seriously degenerated, and driven by a man who delivers the worst customer experience i have ever seen with a bunch of waiters who are clearly ill trained for their rolesBest Western how can you put your name to such poor service
