Overall disappointing. The prawn cocktail was gorgeous at £17 for a starter as we're the starter portion of scallops however at £17 for Famous fish and chips it was very poor. Not a large piece of fish and plate was filled with frozen French fries. Not appealing at all. It is not cheap to eat here and the seafood was lovely but overpriced.

A lovely spot, very welcoming staff and clearly popular. The old fashioned decor is actually very quirky and we liked it a lot, but I agree with other reviews that suggest the toilets need a really good clean! Food was delicious - local and organic prioritised which is great to see, and really high quality. Excellent wine list with a few real gems on it. Recommend and will definitely visit next time we are in the area.

After a day’s sailing we popped in for a drink and the off chance of getting a meal. All went perfectly with local hand drawn ale, better service than I’ve had in a long while and excellent food. All that and the bonus of a stunning location overlooking Loch Crinan.

Popped in for dinner in the bar. Very small & quirky. Staff good & attentive. Feels like the hotel hasn't changed in years but adds to the quirkiness. Seafood linguine nice but lacked the flavour of garlic & chilli. Toilet in bar could do with a good clean. Flies on painting frames & smell of urine. Location gorgeous as always.

Just had an amazing lunch/dinner here. Plump oysters followed by Bouillabaisse for me and a salmon for hubby. The bouillabaisse was stunning and the rissotto also very good just not a patch on the fresh seafood and fish in my boullabaisse. Desserts of apple crumble and tiramisu finished off with excellent coffee. We could not fault the food or the service and the lovely little bar we ate in was cosy and had a special atmosphere. Shame this is our last day on holiday but what a way to end a holiday.

I recently visited the Crinan Seafood bar with my family and had some of the most delicious fish and chips I've had anywhere but the best thing of all was the service, it was second to none. Particularly by waiter Jaime, he went above and beyond for us to enjoy our visit. We just loved him, he was professional but warm and welcoming. Everyone was lovely but Jaime was someone we will always remember.

Was visiting the canal with family from overseas and just walked in for lunch. Had the Cullen skink for lunch and it was perfect ( it’s a family favourite. and yours is the best one I have ever had) and accompanying sourdough bread was delicious. Loved the setting. We preffer this to the hotel main restaurant, and it opens an hour earlier. Plenty excellent sea food truley just off the boat. The Langustine/prawn are huge but sharp and tricky to shell. A few good affordable wines but some are rather expensive. Remember to book it is not a big room.

Arrived at 7pm for a booked table to be told that they didn’t have a table for us. Would we like to have a drink while we were waiting. There were tables empty but we were told these were for “other” people. The wait would be about 15 minutes. So got a drink and sat and waited half an hour. Eventually we were shown to one of the tables that was empty when we had arrived. The food when it came was very nice. However when the bill arrived there was no compensation for having to sit and wait for half an hour. When it was suggested we “had a drink while we waited” I had thought this was a drink on the house. I asked the waitress if this was not a free drink and she said no it was not. There was no apology. This was the second time we had eaten here this week. The staff look fed up and you do not get a warm welcome. If you ask for something your told to wait! It just isn’t good service.

After a long walk up the canal ; well worth the effort, I was persuaded by Mrs G to partake of luncheon, which wasn't on our schedule and consequently had not been scrutinised beforehand on Triadviser nor recommended by friends. Consequently it was pot-luck but oh how the dice tumbled in our favour! The inside was slightly dated and tired but that had a certain charm and reassurance that can't be designed nor duplicated by some trendy corporate interior designer. Initially we shared the small dining room with a French couple;cyclists, who had bagged the best table overlooking the canal basin,Loch Crinan and Duntrune Castle across the bay. However the room soon filled with other diners,a mixture of hotel residents, transient cyclists and canal walkers like ourselves.Dogs were in abundance, well behaved and unobtrusive. I find it a quintessential British trait that we are inclined to faint at the mere sight of a singular pubic hair in our hotel bathroom, but happy to dine with slavering hounds, drool, fleas and shedding hair..but I digress. The Food was exceptional and I can only imagine the Chef had to be from the European continent as British chefs on the whole do not treat seafood with the delicate touch and timing that is required. If I'm mistaken I take my hat off to Chef. Miss G had a plate of magnificent langoustine accompanied by a smooth and delicious aioli and side salad. I chose the whole Sea Bass that was both beautifully presented and cooked. The service was friendly but not overbearing provide by seasoned mature professionals who appreciate that sometimes less is better than more...letting the food take the glory it so well deserved! We will undoubtedly return.

In the grand tradition of Crinan Hotel, most of the prices are outrageous. We had the best Cullen Skink I have ever tasted and then the cheapest thing on the menu, fish and chips, which were OK but no better than you'd expect from any chippie for half the price. Very friendly and helpful service, but would it kill the owners to buy nicer fish? It was OK, just nowhere near as good as it should be for the place and the price.

I have been visiting the Crinan hotel for almost 60 years on an annual or Bi-annual pilgrimage to Scotland, originally to see elderly relatives, but in the last 30 years to take my own family and show them the highlands and Islands. One of the best parts is the early evening dinner at Crinan. Over the years I have eaten in all the rooms and restaurants. From the window walled view at the top, the main dining room looking out across the lock and the bar area. There were three things I came for. The views. which are wonderful whatever the weather, constantly changing light. tide in, tide out. various fishing vessels and yachts meandering around . Secondly was the food. To wait by the Crinan lock for the fishing boat to arrive and watch as giant prawns are carried across the road to the restaurant has been part of the experience since I was in short trousers. I have had the finest Crab risotto here in the past and I, my father, mother and wife, and my son and daughters have enjoyed muscles, giant prawn and the like, fresh from the sea and always to a reliable standard. Finally the care and attention of the staff who have always greeted us with warmth and care... fussing to a good level that we were happy and content and that the overall experience of service matched the view and the food. So much of a fine meal is the company its eaten with and the overall ambiance of the location and experience, sadly on this occasion the entire experience was diminished through the frosty and abrupt service of our waitress. I wanted to go to Crinan, partly to keep up the tradition, but also to support them during this time of covid and diminished business. On booking the table, the reservation person was welcoming, advised what they could do with regards to limited space and the Covid precautions they would have in place, all done with great panache. On arrival the following day, the maitre'd took names, temperatures and showed us to the table in the seafood bar. the location was great. All good so far. but then the waitress who was to take our orders came along. It seemed to me (and on asking, to my other 5 guests) that she did't want to be doing this job! While remaining polite, we felt she was officious and abrupt. Plates were 'plonked' on the table. Questions about the food were curtly answered. Now! we were about to spend in excess of £ 400 for dinner and drinks and it was clear the place needed the business, so I did expect at the least a pleasant and welcoming hostess/waitress. One guest advised they had a slight shell fish allergy, "well why have you come here then" was the answer, rather than "I'll let the chef know"! In the main, the food was good and we enjoyed our own company, but for the first time ever I elected to leave no service tip! as we'd just not received the kind of support and service expected. We also cut short on sweets, coffees and after dinner drinks. I will go to Crinan again and I hope this was just a single incident of a staff member being out of salts or similar.

Birthday treat for hubby while staying in the area.Very novel introduction getting your details taken and temperature checked in the outside seating area and not being allowed in until your designated time spot, then to be given your housekeeping rules - but these are strange times we are living in. Just such a shame that there were so few people in the restaurant and as no music allowed it did make it feel quite echoey. However we got the best seat in the window with magnificent views. The staff were friendly and helpful and so to the food.Cullen skink was delicious and scallops just ever so slightly overcooked. Steak and lamb dishes cooked to perfection and very tasty.Even managed puddings. Reasonably priced. Heres just hoping things can get back to normality soon.

Came across the Crinan Seafood Bar by chance when visiting the village and was not disappointed by their service or more importantly their incredible seafood stew. Filled with a plethora of scallops, mussels, prawns & salmon, it was an absolute treat. The service was fantastic and I must applaud the staff on their COVID procedures - taking your temperature outside the front of the restaurant, making note of track & trace as well as explaining the use of face masks in the venue. It shows they care about the safety of their customers & staff. Only one tiny thing I would suggest is to have a little background music going in the restaurant to help with the atmosphere - otherwise a great lunch.

Walked Away I called the Crinan Hotel early during the day to book a table for two and was told that they only had a table available at 5:30. At 5:28 I approached the door only to find it locked. I could see the staff inside who initially ignored me so I called their number to enquire how I got into the place. I was told that they didn’t open till 5:30 so we would have to wait outside. A few minutes later a waitress appeared and told us that before we could go in she would have to take our temperatures (hopefully not rectally) and take our contact details. This was to be done outside in a biting northerly wind. We were then told that we would have to wear masks inside the building any time we were not sat at our table. At this point we decided that the view really wasn’t worth the climb so returned to our boat for some very tasty home cooking.

We booked this restaurant for a pre-Christmas dinner, some time in advance. On booking we were also emailed the menus and again confirmed our attendance. One week prior to arriving, we were called again to make sure we were coming, by Chris. So, it was rather surprising when we arrived and said we had a reservation to be told 'no you don't'!! By Chris himself! and to be taken out of the main restaurant and into the cold, dark and cigarette smelly entrance to sit. Not the jolly Christmas celebration we were anticipating! When I went back into the bar to show Chris our emails, he just said don't worry. I then requested that we could perhaps be moved, into the slightly more comfortable public bar area. There we ordered our food, only to be told the prawns which I had especially looked forward to had all gone! We had sea bass and scallops in the end. The seafood itself was excellent. But the kindest thing I can say about our reception and the service we received is that it was 'quirky'!..... I'd give it a chance again for a drop in lunch or something, but if you are looking to reserve a table for a special occasion then I would forget it.

As vegans we were delighted when we were offered a seperate vegetarian/vegan menu and we could not fault the friendly and helpful staff. There was one vegan option and the staff also offered to adapt vegetarian options to make them vegan. We chose the couscous with asparagus which was delicious. However, we were half way through a 15mile walk and had worked up an appetite and this did not really fill us up, despite costing a similar amount to other, much more substantial, dishes that we saw being served to others. We would have filled up with a pudding had a vegan option been available. We would also have liked to have seen some vegan seafood options on our menu inculding ingredients such as samphire and seaweed! However, the chef clearly knows their stuff and I am sure in the fullness of time we shall see a greater range of vegan fare. Thank you for a pleasant and tasty meal; we may well be back in the future to see what you have to offer.

This was a pleasant Seafood Bar with good atmosphere and excellent food which was served and presented well. My wife and I had Haddock for lunch and it was beautifully cooked with light batter, fries and a salad which had a light dressing and accompanied by tartar sauce. "Still" water was ordered and presented in a glass - it may have been better done so in the bottle with the glass empty. Within the bar there were three dogs (non assistant) present accompanying their owners who were dining - one of the dogs repeatedly drooled on the floor. My wife is not comfortable with dogs and the tendency for one, although on a lengthy leash, to repeatedly mingle about her feet while eating served to unnerve her during her meal and compromise the occassion. Finally, the owner did reign-in the dog which lessened the tension. Unless the dog present is an "assistance dog" it may be worthwhile the proprietors declining their presence.

The seafood bar has an aspect over the harbour and like the hotel itself holds an old world charm. The food is magnificent - fresh seafood cooked and served with a distinction rarely found today. Prices are remarkably reasonable given the quality of the fare. If in London, prices would be x4!. When you depart this place you are left with the burning hope that this place must sustain, and by some magic resist the realities and economic pressures of the world outside its boundaries.

We stayed for two days in the hotel so had the opportunity to sample the restaurant on a couple of occasions,we found the food satisfactory although certain parts of the menu to be quite repetitive, a wider range f soups would be a good place to start, although what was on offer was quite nice , every extensive wine list , the haddock and chips are really popular, although there were loads of people enjoying steaks and very delicious seafood dishes that were very fresh ,the atmosphere was very nice ,but the tables at the windows and door to the outside were uncomfortabley cold even with the small heater on .All in all it is an enjoyable pleasant relaxed place for a meal if you are in the area although I would have to think twice about travelling any distance to get there ,btw the service was 1st class .

We ate here recently. Service was friendly if somewhat dis-jointed at times. Having looked forward to the meal experience at the hotel, we were disappointed with the quality of cuisine. Whilst it was clear that very good quality ingredients were sourced for dishes we ordered, skills execution was of average standard. It appeared that the kitchen was struggling to cope with the volume of trade being processed in the hotel's food outlets.

Staying close to Crinan we had several meals at the "Seafood bar". They had an excellent variety of sea foods and meat and each and every meal was superb. If you eat in the area overlooking the Crinan sea locks it is a wonderful view with scenery stretching across the horizon. It's location at the sea lock area is wonderful for local walks along the Crinan canal.

We had fish & chips for lunch at the Seafood bar, and it was so wonderful we went back for the exact same order a few days later. Should say it all.

We ate here last week as a family including a toddler. We booked for 6pm and sat at the large table next to the window with fabulous views over the lighthouse and canal entrance. Even though it was raining, the view was fabulous. We were made to feel very welcome and the service was spot on... attentive but not intrusive. The starters were delicious- the scallops and bacon were super and the soup was delicious. For mains, my son and I shared the seafood platter and it was wonderful value for money, with lobster and oysters included. We loved it! The steak eaten by a member of the family was good value for money. My daughter in law had the crab risotto and loved that. The drinks were good value for money, especially for a hotel that is off the beaten track, and my glasses of merlot were very pleasant. The hotel interior is a throwback to the 70s, but is clean and cosy and very atmospheric with the lovely panelling and original features. The design of the exterior is special and it has windows that all have amazing views. We had a special family night. Thank you. Wish I was there again tonight. I would recommend you in a heart beat.

This small restaurant attached to Crinan Hotel offers very good seafood served in cosy surroundings next the sea lock of the Crinan Canal. Well worth the journey; it doesn’t take bookings and dinner service ends at 8.30pm.

This is quite a small bar within the Crinan Hotel. It looks a little dated but the location is great (you can watch the seafood being landed!) - it overlooks the western entrance to the Crinan Canal - and the food is of the same extremely high quality as the rest of the Hotel. We had the juiciest mussels, served with chips and a pint of a locally brewed beer: it doesn't get any better!

The restaurant and hotel make for a wonderful experience in this out of the way, gem of a place. The seafood was as fresh a# could be and the seafood stew was sublime. Could happily stay and eat there for a long visit.

Having sailed through the Crinan Canal we ate her. Very fresh sea food and beautifully cooked. So many choices so we had a collection of starters with chips. Don’t take bookings und 8 people so suggest you rock up early, got busy the night we were in.

Not much else in the area, didn’t need to reserve on a Sunday night but it can get busy. Speciality is sea food, and that seems fresh and well cooked. Bream was good. Service was civil enough for me to leave a tip though whether it reached the staff box is another matter.

Stopped overnight at the end of Crinan canal on a roundabout route to Islay. The setting for the Seafood Bar is idyllic - beautiful views across Crinan Loch with the gentle clank clink of sailboats moored for the evening.

We had a lovely visit here during the June heatwave. We could have been in the Caribbean. When the weathers this good Crinan seriously stands out with its pristine beauty and gorgeous sea views. A cheeky lunch delivered the whole lobster with new potatoes and salad with was fantastic. My partner had the scallops with pancetta - equally good. We’ve fined on over 20 restaurants up the west coast that this simple but high quality bar gets into our top 3 without doubt. We’ll definitely be back - in fact we’re thinking at least once a month!

We only half expected the restaurant to still be open when we showed up, hungry and unannounced, at 2pm mid-week. It was ... and a very good meal was swiftly served with great panache. Why then, not a score of 5? The eating irons laid out before the arrival of the seafood stew included crab crackers so there were high expectations of one or 2 chunky crab pieces to get stuck into. Alas, not a one. Lots of nice fishy bits kinda made up for it but I felt that crab tool really needed exercising!

This place definitely has the feel of a quiet, local lunch spot. Unimposing, not particularly fancy, but comfortable and with a neat old-world look to it. The host the day we went was Pedro. Honestly can't say enough about this fellow. Funny, inviting, HELPFUL, friendly and as chatty as we indicated we wanted to be. He and his friend the cappuccino machine make maybe the best cappuccino I've ever had. He gave us directions, tips, and lots of warm welcome. Whomever cooked the fresh fish of the day and the local prawns from the Crinan waters you can see from your seat, did an excellent job. Cooked to perfect doneness and not over complicated, just the natural, sweet delicacy of seafood. My family has a long history in the seafood business and I'm a hard customer in this department, but this was fantastic. The prawns were so sweet and succulent it was almost like a dessert. If you're in the area, go here. Hopefully you're lucky enough to get Pedro as a host, and have some of the freshest seafood possible. The sides were eh. Salad seems to be predominantly an American thing, but the greens they used were fresh and the dressing light and delicious. The green beans were maybe a tad overcooked. But, with pounds of perfect seafood, a truly exceptional cappuccino, and a great server, it's hard to even remember.

Lovely place, lovely people, lovely food. But the standout for me was the simple attentiveness to customers and a natural humour and interest. Nothing showy or pretentious- and was a pleasure to dine there.

We came across the seafood bar at the end of a lovely 3 hour walk from Ardrishaig. The food was first class and the service faultless. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay for dessert- we did not want to make out way back along the canal in darkness. All in all a perfect Sunday, will be back for sure

We visited this restaurant for my wife's birthday lunch. We both chose the locally caught langoustines which were cooked to perfection. Service was attentive without being obtrusive. A word of caution though, January and February has a limited menu so check it out before you go.

I have already included further details about the general uncleanliness and junkyard appearance of this hotel. The location is superb which makes our experience an even greater disappointment as we had such expectations based on the website. The stench of dirty fried cooking oil was not the aroma we were hoping for when we entered the restaurant. The soup-lentil and lemon was more heavily oregano seasoned pieces of tinned tomatoes floating around with some undercooked lentils. Accompanied by a tiny breadroll,of the type you buy partbaked from the supermarket. After taking in the lack of cleanliness, stained carpets and junky appearance of the furniture in the public areas during a trip to the bathroom and the awful soup-we decided against ordering any more food. I have attached some photos to illustrate my opinion.

Was expecting great quality fresh food . But very disappointed . Looking forward to local mussels but off the menu . Scallops were fresh but the sauce let it down and the bread was stale and expensive . Both in the end had fish and chips , that was two very small pieces of fish each , couldn't hardly see any fish , most likely frozen due to the texture and appearance . Staff were excellent and beer was good

I am giving you an excellent review based on previous visits but arrived Thursday 14th November at 11:15 and it was closed. Website says open at 10:00 and opening time on door says 10:30. Several people left disappointed during my 20min seat on bench. Off to Port Bannatyne for my brunch. Can you update your opening hours on door and social media platforms.

What an absolute find. This place was amazing in every way. The staff are welcoming, friendly and so attentive. The food was out of this world. Would definitely recommend 100% and will be back. Just wish we had found it at the start of our holiday and not at the end

Met up with a friend for lunch today. ALWAYS reliably happy with our meals at The Esplanade over the many years.... But today's young chef was very astute with his skills. We had *Cullen skink, the baguette was fresh and warmed....so often it is not; (it's the little things like this that make you come back,), *fish n chips, and *incredibly chunky steak pie, with a lid rising up to the ceiling I'm my opinion all 3 meals really were the best examples on the island. Well done to: *The Esplanade for keeping up the standards of quality which bring people back * The Chef * The always friendly and helpful waitress 😁 (Love the new curtains and furnishings 😁)
