The Cricketers in Brighton and Hove

We booked a table for Sunday lunch here at 3-30 after having a booking at another pub cancelled due to no chef, we were so glad we chose The Cricketers, we arrived a little early but thought we would have a drink before eating, we were served at the bar by a very pleasant young lady ( sorry we didn’t get your name) who we informed that we had a reservation, which was no problem, we were shown to our table straight away and there was no rush to order any food so we were able to enjoy a drink before ordering, we then both chose the lunch of roast lamb with roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables with the accompaniment of cauliflower cheese it was fabulous, and the gravy was just as we liked it, it was so good we highly recommend it to anyone, a while after we had eaten the main course we ordered the cheese plate, that consisted of four different slices of cheese, grapes, bread and biscuits and also various pickles, it was lovely and and great accompaniment to finish our meal, the total cost of the meal with drinks we considered very reasonable, so just to say thank you all for excellent service and an excellent meal, The Cricketer’s comes highly recommended and when back in Brighton we will definitely visit again.

No hay café o lima cordial disponible y 5 de nosotros estábamos aplastados en una mesa muy pequeña, a pesar de reservar con mucha antelación. El personal era amable, pero tuvimos que pedir menús y cubiertos. Hemos estado muchas veces antes para el almuerzo del domingo y cada vez tenía un servicio maravilloso y comida. Por lo tanto, nos quedamos un poco decepcionados esta vez.

Classic pub in a classic town with classic pints and food. Great for a visitor and reccomended by many locals. Bonus points: it's the oldest pub in Brighton.

Quirky and friendly pub! Great outdoor place to sit and watch the world go by but when it got chilly we sat indoors which is really cozy! Warm and welcoming the staff were chatty and friendly and the food (although we didn’t eat there) looked and smelt amazing as it went past. Second time we’ve been here when visiting Brighton and we will go again. Really like it here x

Was totally ignored by the young barman behind the bar (I was the only person waiting to be served) When a gentleman on his own walked in the barman immediately turned to serve him. I politely pointed out I was next, rather than serving me he then appeared torn as to who to serve. I asked if I had not been served as I was a woman the barman said “no, it’s just he’s a regular” Clearly visitors are treated as second class. I left and obviously will not returning.

We went on an impromptu drive to Brighton and found ourselves seeking shelter from the cold, dreary rain on a dark evening. With no shortage of pubs in the area, something about this one stood out and drew us in—and I’m so glad it did. The moment I stepped inside, I couldn’t help but smile. The interiors are tastefully done—stylish yet unpretentious—and the space is surprisingly generous, with well-spaced tables creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. The décor strikes the right balance: subtle, with just the right amount of flair—classy without tipping into kitsch. Their drinks menu includes both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, though they don’t offer mocktails. I went for a 0% Heineken, which was actually quite decent. We ordered the cheesy loaded fries, apricot and pork-stuffed balls, and the Sunday roast potatoes with gravy. The roast potatoes were the star for me—perfectly crispy on the outside and light and fluffy within. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were roasted in duck fat—the flavour was rich and indulgent. Service was exceptional. The young lady behind the bar was warm, attentive, and really helpful, offering suggestions based on our preferences and appetite. All in all, it was a lovely surprise. I’d absolutely return if I’m in the area again.

Excellent little pub. Stopped here for lunch with some friends. Great service, lovely staff, good food and reasonable prices. Highly recommend.

Real quirky pub inside lovely outside when suns out and people watch

This place has always looked busy so we only visited recently on a quieter mid week evening. They don't have as many ales as we like, but the atmosphere was pretty good. Very friendly and attentive staff, too.

We held our area meeting in the room above the pub. On arrival the room was all laid out ready with water and glasses. Excellent venue to hold a meeting. Big screen to hook your laptop up to. We also had lunch there and the food was fantastic. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful from start to finish. We will definitely be returning again. Great venue. Thank you

My go to pub when I'm in Brighton, excellent beer selection, nice fire place and always a good vibe.

Lovely staff, lovely vibe. It was a little cold in the bar so perhaps turn the fire up in winter. Guinness could be better. Live band was about to start as we were leaving so I’m sure that would’ve been a real nice treat had we not had dinner plans.

Lovely and very attentive staff. We sat by the bar and enjoyed a couple of NYE drinks. Staff ensured the atmosphere was good and traditionally chatted nicely with all punters with smiles both ways. Well done all!

My friend fell over in the street ripping her knee open and we got refused medical aid in the resturaunt opposite so came here, and a nice lady at the bar helped us out with the first aid kit! Thanks so much!

Un encantador pub histórico ideal para una bebida como ha estado aquí antes para ese propósito Sin embargo fue hoy por comida. Después de esperar más de una hora para la comida y preguntar qué estaba pasando nos dijeron que las cajas estaban abajo y que necesitaban comprobar nuestro pedido. El personal era muy agradable y disculparse, pero si no hubiéramos preguntado me pregunto si todavía estaríamos esperando allí. 15 minutos más tarde comprobamos otros 10 minutos más tarde llegó. Si nos hubieran dicho antes que había un problema, habrían sido más estrellas, pero simplemente quedarse esperando es pobre. Era obvio que era una situación difícil para el equipo, pero no parecía estar siendo administrado por nadie y era caótico. Si se hubiera comunicado antes, habría sido mucho mejor.

Antiguo pub con un montón de habituales peculiares (la mayoría de los cuales parecen ser amantes del bulldog inglés también) , un poco elegante y conservador, pero vale la pena una pinta. O dos. O tres. No probé la comida

Encontramos este pub en viaje asesor y pensamos que “el pub más antiguo de Brighton” sería un gran lugar para una cena temprana. Aunque el pub en sí es agradable, probablemente cometimos un error con la reserva aquí. Esto se debió al hecho de que estábamos apretujados en una diminuta mesa uno al lado del otro, mirando hacia el pub. Eso estaría bien para una bebida, pero para la comida - no tan bueno! Pedimos que nos movieran dos veces y nos dijeron que no podíamos movernos a ninguna de las mesas vacías. Eventualmente cuando llegó nuestra comida decidimos pasar a una mesa de esquina que era un poco mejor. La comida estaba bien, comida típica del pub. Recomendaría aquí para las bebidas, pero en nuestra experiencia de asientos / mesa que tristemente diría que no a comer allí.

We love Sunday Lunch at the Cricketers and prefer a table in the courtyard side area. We last went Sunday 8th December. I particularly like the Roast Pork while my other half goes for Ckicken or Turkey. The vegetables are excellent and we usually have a side order of cauliflower cheese. Yummy. (Never have room for desert.)

An excellent Christmas dinner. Good portion sizes, especially the smoked salmon and prawn salad. We were really looked after and had a fabulous evening. Thank you. Harry was brilliant and even popped off to ask the chef a few questions for us.

I booked the Greene Room above the pub for my husband's 70th birthday party. The planning was excellent; both managers had meetings with me and showed me around in advance of the event, and were most helpful, which put my mind at rest. They had a very positive 'can do' attitude. The venue itself is cheerful and cosy, with plenty of space, a well-stocked bar, and beautifully decorated for Christmas. They also allow your own decorations to be put in place, if you wish. I ordered a buffet of mainly vegetarian dishes, which was of very good quality. I had also ordered champagne, and this was an outstanding Laurent Perrier - most appreciated by all! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Cricketers for a private function for anything between about 20-60 people (there is an extra adjoining room if it is required for a larger number of guests). A great pub - downstairs, the main bar has bags of character!

Best Pub Ever! If you are considering to have a party do not look further, The Cricketers is the right place to go! Brilliant venue,Great Atmosphere and everything you might need for a great time full of great memories is at the Cricketers in the very center of Brighton in Black Lion street! I Had today a Birthday Party for my God Daughter and the really High professional level and the utmost care putted during the service by the manager Ian and the other member of his amazing staff was just incredibile! Every single kid and their parents had an spectacular time and really enjoyed their time pleased to see the kids happy! I am over to moon!! Thank you very much Ian and thank you to every single member of the staff for their contribute to make my God Doughter so Happy!

Went to The Crickers tonight and had an amazing time . The pub was very clean with tasteful decor, the staff and manager were lovely and welcoming. We had booked our daughter/grandaughter's birthday party there and they all had a really fun evening.

A fabulous public house in the heart of trendy Brighton, you won't be disappointed, a great selection of drinks and good food served by very helpful and friendly staff. Lots of outdoor seating as well. The lanes are moments away, so in terms of location, it's absolutely perfect!! Try it, you'll be so glad you did 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Great cosy, friendly pub with excellent bar snacks. Sausage roll and cheesy chips, absolutely the ones to go for. Outdoor seating for when it's warm enough.

We only had a couple pints here. It’s supposed to be the oldest pub in Brighton or one of the oldest so maybe it attracts a lot of non Brighton residents on that alone. We were attacked by 3 construction workers who were drinking heavily and never shut off by the staff so “over serving” drunk people must be a thing here. If you don’t want to be “hate crimed” in Brighton then go to one of the other pubs because the lowest denominator of British society goes here.

Staff made us more than welcome. The food, very nice, chips were done to perfection & the burger; best I've tasted. Will definitely call again Thank you.

I live in Brighton and there are plenty of places to get a Sunday roast but went here today and it was the best I've had in a while. Very good, would recommend.

Pleasant British pub in central Brighton.

The young woman putting my drink under the tap, realized it can't be lifted herself but when I asked her could you please get it out of that spot and hand it to me as I don't want to come into their space, she said to me get it yourself and left. Get a new job! To the young guy that acknowledged the unprofessional behaviour behind the bar by his colleague. Rock on. To the Bulgarian doorman. Rock on! Kalo bradi!

Attended function in private suite. Service was excellent and buffet style food laid on was very good, could have done with more vegetarian and vegan options. A great evening

Booked for a birthday, 6 of us. Able to take a cake which they stored for us. One of the most helpful and polite managers I have ever met, nothing was too much trouble. Staff were amazing. We all had food which was of a very good quality and it was hot. Service was quick and efficient. When it was time for the cake they provided plates, serviettes and a knife without hesitation. Definitely go again. Thank you for the experience.

Two pints of IPA £15 was a bit steep in price I thought. We ate here on a Sunday, the roast dinners looked amazing and the pub was packed out. I had fish and chips, the peas were cold, my husband had a chicken burger and that was fine. We called back for drinks on the Monday and sat in the sun trap outside.

500 yr old pub; A dear friend who lives in Brighton took us... the marble drink tables attached to the benches were the same from when they were put in over half a century ago

What a cool place! We walked around the Lanes for about an hour and was just looking for a traditional pub to sit down, relax, and have a beer. She ordered a Fullers and I had a Strongbow on their daytime special for about £6. They played some great 80s tunes also. Overall, a really cool place with a ton of history.

Sadly our experience was a tad poor, really wanted to love it, beautiful traditional pub, definitely vibing busy but the Lager was a let down and we waited 45mins for Tatter Tots, Scampi and a Salad which unfortunately were not worth the wait, I understand it's high season but standards should remain the same all the time. Sorry for the negative review

Everything I enjoy in a proper pub! Good service, great ambience, diverse clientèle of all ages, comfortable, choice of beers, gins, etc, smooth background music, seating outdoors, and an appealing menu.

Went yesterday with our little dog.It was too hot outside as the tables with brollies were taken, so we moved into the court yard, which was perfect as the doors were open, and it was cool and airy . I had a cheese burger with fries, and my partner had pork skewer starter with teriyaki sauce and mini hash browns a lager and a couple of glasess of wine .It was all delicious and will definitely go back . One small point is that they're a bit frugal with their mayonnaise and tomato sauces that come in tiny pots . But we still had really lovely lunch, and it's such a pretty pub .

We waited a considerable time to be served by the one bar person available. Quite possibly the worst two pints (Neck Oil & Moretti), both flat and acidic in taste, that have ever encountered. Many other customers seemed to have similar complaints. A place to avoid.

This beautiful oldest pub in Brighton is a cosy, charming home to have a drink or meal. The staff always happy and smiling to serve you. The decor is classic old time and the chair comfy to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. The Landlord Ian, is considerate to every customers needs. I always feel at home here and leave with a huge smile on my face. Best Pub in Brighton

Didn't have food so can't judge. Lovely bar and atmosphere. Drinks a little pricey however, a good glass of vino I'd always going to cost more! The reason for my lower score was based on the ladies toilets. There was no toilet roll in either and I had to get the dregs out of the bottle of soap to wash my hands. Yes, I know it was almost closing time but I was still a paying customer so require the basic whe going to the toilet.

Popular small city boozer, as featured in many a CAMRA book, hence my visit today. Lots of original features and 2 ales on offer of London Pride being one, and not bad too.

We had the loveliest Sunday Roast. Plenty of it and very tasty. Only 1 disappointment from 1 diner and that was different food piled on top of different food. But so much variety of ingredients meant it had to be piled high. Great service, very friendly staff, good value for money for what you get. Would definitely go back for more. Yummy!

01/07/2024 table 34 Ordered 2 ciabattas- a fish finger one and a pastrami one, with tater tots and a beer each. The pastrami ciabatta had no dressing- should have had Russian dressing, but worst of all the fishmonger ciabatta was mouldy! The tater tots were nice but mouldy bread certainly puts a dampner on lunch. An apology was offered and a replacement made although the Russian dressing never appeared Would not come again so many wonderful places instead

good food- bar snacks and all! had chips and coke, some drinks as well. chips were crispy and big, portions were huge!! have mayo as well rlly nice. flowers at the entrance, looks really beautiful and classy! there were a few drunkards around but hey it’s a pub right? not rlly lively but recommend!!

Had a great night here on a Friday night with the live band. Though a small space, it was a great atmosphere and the band were great, featuring a lot of oldies and newer songs.

We choose the 2 belly pork options on the menu and WOW! We were totally amazed by the quality, it was absolutely delicious 😋, we'd like to say 'Thankyou' to the chef, he obviously cares about the quality of his food, we were a party of six and every meal that was delivered was 10/10 so thankyou we will definitely be recommending this place and returning ourselves 👌
