An absolute gem at Somerset House, highly recommended with a remarkable collection of works, we saw the current and permanent exhibitions + do try the WatchHouse cafe in the main area adjacent to the gallery + of course Somerset House itself, currently showing SOIL.

The Courtauld Gallery's permanent collection is an incredible selection of some of the masterpieces of impressionism. They also had a fantastic exhibition of the Oskar Reinhart Collection, which was a completely collection of equally magnificent impressionist masterpieces. There were a few other exhibits as well, but the relatively small yet focused collection was unlike anything I've ever seen.

Having visited the Gallery in the past, l was keen to see it post revamp. But l was disappointed. It's an interesting building with many corners, staircases and doors - there must be more, l thought. But, no, three simple galleries and a beautiful shop. An excellent lift, and the occasional glimpse of the great outside through a window. My main interest is the Impressionists and l am pleased to know this is the largest collection of Cezannes. But, somehow, that room seemed dull, flat. Perhaps because of the colour of the walls - white. It was good to see a favourite Van Gogh, and a Cezanne l wasn't familiar with, but otherwise l was not excited. The Van Gogh is one l first saw in the Courtauld about 60 years ago, when the gallery was in its previous location.

This is a 5 star plus exhibition and to have some of my very favourite paintings in one exhibit was just amazing yet I had a terrible experience because there was far far too many people allowed to enter/tickets sold. It was packed with people all jostling to see these amazing works when what was really required was time and space to enjoy each one.

The impressionist gallery was definitely the highlight with lots of famous works and a lovely airy space to enjoy them in. The other floors with medieval and Pre-Raphaelite stuff were pretty dull to be honest - have seen better collections in less illustrious places. The only thing that deducted a star was that they have closed the entrance to the gift shop on the -1 floor so you have to go across the way and down the stairs making it awkward to get there and inaccessible if you can't do stairs.

An absolute hidden gem close to the galleries at Trafalgar Square. The entrance is small but don't be put off, you can start your journey on the 1st floor and work your way up or go to the top and work your way down. There are an array of past masters such as Van Gogh, Rubens and Lautrec as well as more modern pieces, we were lucky enough to overhear an education talk on Impressionism but there are other free talks. The gift shop in the basement was a bit of a walk due to renovation and holds your typical gallery items, we didn't use the cafe as it seemed a bit overpriced, but there are plenty of places near.

Located in Somerset House, the Courtland Gallery is another less known London gems. The museum is partitioned on three floors, with Medieval artists exhibited on the first, Renaissance on the second and Impressionists and modern artists, on the third. The gallery exhibits works from a plethora of world-renowned artists - Gaugain, Renoir, Monet, Cezanne, Manet, Rubens, Botticelli and many, many others. The paintings are presented in a modern, neat way, a characteristic of many London museums that places them in the world museology lead. Even the gift shop is excellently organised and stocked, while the building's architecture is a sight to admire on its own. You'll need around 1.5 hours to visit the museum - it is spanning on three floors but the overall size is quite compact. The adult price of admission in £12 and the online booking slot takes just a few minutes to secure. Tickets can also be purchased on site.
