The Counting House in Doncaster

Super place for food or a casual drink. Food is cooked to order so is fresh and hot. Great service from well trained, pleasant and attentive staff in a relaxed atmosphere.

We were wanting somewhere local to go once or twice a month, unfortunately despite having new owners and being quite nicely done out, this isn’t the place. A 55 minute wait for a pizza and some tapas wasn’t a good start. The food arrived together, which meant much of the tapas was lukewarm, nobody came to check if was okay. Fairly poor quality food - 1 pitta bread and what appeared to be shop bought houmous for £5.75? Meatballs were just meatballs, no herbs, spice and little flavour. Garlic mushrooms - maybe 4/5 mushrooms cut small with no garlic, I could go on. So glad we got a pizza for my daughter, otherwise a trip to the chip shop on the way home would’ve been needed. No offer of dessert - don’t even know if they do any. Lastly, I ordered a beer with my food, this didn’t arrive until 25 minutes later when I chased it, fairly curt response that it was ‘in the queue’ didn’t give me any reason to feel valued as a customer. All fairly poor value at £71.50 (the menu on the FB page being misleading and apparently at least 5 years out of date!). Shame, really wanted to like it but won’t be back for food at least.

We visited the Counting House at lunchtime on Saturday 24 June 2023, our first visit since the recent change of ownership. Our usual fare (BBQ chicken pizza with a side order of garlic bread) was noticeably tastier than previously and we noted that the menu itself had undergone a carefully considered update. We both agreed that our food was very good value for money. The owner and chef were very attentive and we both look forward to meeting them on future visits.

Excellent visit, warm, friendly staff, great service with good quality food and wine. Will definitely re visit and recommend to friends and family.

A super little place, very cosy. Well priced great quality food. We had a lovely full English cooked by Dan, who we were told is the new member of staff. A positive start to the day.

What a great place! I suppose you'd class it as a restaurant but that makes is sound pretentious and it's not. It's relaxed like a bistro but more chic. Whatever it's handle, it's a fab place to eat. Food is first-rate and I guess you've got to be local to know about it and I suppose the locals want to keep it to themselves! Come and try it. It's off the beaten track in Bessecar but worth the journey. I see someone's already given it a glowing accolade "Best Fish Finger Sandwich" and he's not wrong there. I've tried a few in my time - Hilton in Newcastle, Mercure in Sheffield, et al but nothing compares. Wonderfully tasty and squishy in thick white bread (other dough-based options are available!) served with sweet potato fries. Washed down with a pot of tea. Nothing more British! My Vegan family member was well catered for and the chicken wrap Sam had was oozing fresh char-grilled peppers. Yummy, I think there will be a return visit very shortly!

Stumbled across this place for a quick lunch and so glad we did. Nice place, modern and relaxed. Friendly staff and amazing fish finger sandwiches with home cooked chips. Amazing value for money too. Can't waiting to go back.

Visited Saturday night. Very nice place out of the way. Small and intimate. Staff are great and choice of gins is huge. Would recommend to anyone wanting a nice relaxing night with friends

We went out for Sunday lunch on 15.12.19. The christmas menu was the only option and when it came it wasn't up to standard, meat was dry and the yorkshire puds were small and tasted of flour, only thing that was good were the pigs in blankets but it's hard to ruin them! After our mains came we had to get cutlery off other tables as we didnt get any extra brought to us after our starter. Services was slow in general and there were hardly any staff around. Nice look to the place but its not worth it, cook a sunday dinner at home!

We have been here a number of times and never had a bad meal, service is great and the choice of drinks is really diverse. It may be small but it has a welcoming atmosphere and nothing is too much trouble, allergies are catered for, you only have to ask. We will be BACK!

I am annoyed with The Counting House as the concept of a classy wine bar as my local is attractive. It could be an amazing place for locals and visitors to the area if they could get the service and the Menu right. Food is nice, reasonably priced but the service is shocking. Two recent visits items were missing from the meal with an explanation of " Sorry we have ran out". Not acceptable when 1 of the visits we had to advise of our meals prior the booking due to the numbers being 9 people. 2nd visit because of the experience of missing items the first time we called to make sure the meals we wanted were going to be available with the response of "We will ensure it is". The meals arrived with the pork pie substituted with quiche, scotch egg substituted with a boiled egg and no cheese with a blase explanation that the menu has changed online. When asking to see the current in house menu there the items missing were in black and white, same as the online menu. Explanation not accepted!! 3rd experience the Menu for Tapas for 2 people was not clear as to whether it was 5 tapas per couple or 5 Tapas each. We asked the question being advised by the waitress it was each and she also advised we received 2 bottles of wine. We questioned this as this seemed like a too good to be true offer, especially the wine as it stated "A" bottle of wine on the menu. We was assured that this was correct. When the bill came we questioned the waitress about the twice charged tapas for two to be told by a higher member of staff we had ordered a deal each. When we advised of the information we was given as we did question it no interest from the higher member of staff was given. So what was supposed to be an easy and reasonably priced midweek tea turned out to be expensive. Its such a shame as the food and the ambience of the place is really nice. I know we are not the first to experience this service. One offs are acceptable but when this is happening regular The Counting House management should look to improve this. I really want to say I will return as this is my local but unless I hear of improvements unfortunately I will not.

This is the second time my friends and I have been here, the first time I had their counting house board But half of the food was missing! With no explanation So this time my friend emailed them to book the table and mentioned that one of us would be wanting the counting house board again and explained what happened last time and could they make sure they had everything this time, as they had plenty of notice Well when it came the pork pie was missing! And no cheese It’s a joke really as they are the main parts of the ploughman style dish When we questioned it they went away and came back a while late to tell us the menu had now changed Here’s a tip for the counting house If your menu says pork pie/cheese Have it in If you change your menu Give the customer the correct one and change the website!!!!! It’s a real shame as it’s a nice place But we were the only ones in there all night.......... I can now see why Will not be returning

Only visited for breakfast so far, but we love this place. The decor is lovely, staff very friendly & the food is top class. We plan to visit in the evening!

We live nearby and decided to try the tapas on a Friday night. The staff were attentive and friendly and our drinks and food were brought promptly. Most of our food was tasty and appeared freshly prepared. The only dish we had an issue with were the chicken skewers which were very dry and hard and some of the pieces could not be removed from the stick. Apart from this we had a lovely evening.

Had the worst Sunday lunch ever, after waiting over an hour to be served. The Meal was very disappointing to say the leastWe were all still hungry when we left as so little was edible. Such a shame as it has the potential to be a nice place to visit. We certainly won’t be having food there again.

Came for an impromptu get together with friends we all ate and drank wine. Staff are so welcoming and on the ball, service was efficient. The food was absolutely beautiful, prices are reasonable for food, the wine typical for what you pay in a wine bar. Would highly recommend

This is undoubtedly a great place for those living in the area proving a great selection of food and offering additional attractions, Tapas some nights and live music. It is also licensed for those that enjoy a drink. The staff were great but the place was not busy. I had the soup and sandwich for just£5 which I thought would be good value. I am not sure whether the soup was homemade but it did not taste like it. The ham sandwich contained thinly sliced ham and I was looking forward to a nice slice filling the sandwich.

We went to the Counting House last night for drinks, tapas and pizza. We had a great evening, the service was very good and all of the staff were very helpful. The food was excellent, we were all very impressed. They have a singer on the last Saturday of the month, what a talent. Will definitely be returning very soon and maybe try their sunday lunch menu.

A nice place to eat the food was excellent and the wine was also great, good seating and plenty of room , however it was spoilt by very slow service, about 40 minutes to receive three basic sandwich’s with chips, my sandwich turned up and I’d just about finished my sandwich when my chips turned up after asking a few times, the staff never came to ask if all was ok.

Met here for a few drinks with friends. Trendy place with decir that aligned with it's banking past. A pink gin and fever tree tonic and a coke totalled around £7 which wasn't too bad. Didn't try the food but it looked good. The only issue is thst goohle maps took us to the back of a different pub. Nice spot for a few afternoon drinks. Friendly staff and comfy seats inside.

Over the last few years we have been here many times and had some great meals, decent price and good service, the last three times we have been they have just become slow and poor service, forgotten our order, what we have had served up was below average quality and full up prices not forgetting always out of stock of some bit of the sharing platters! It's such a shame they are dog friendly and all really nice staff but we expect better - we will not be going here again

I visited with a group of friends for a baby shower last weekend. It’s a lovey little place, decorated nicely and it was a good atmosphere. Although I didn’t eat, other people in our party did and they really enjoyed their food, especially the pizzas. It worked well for the baby shower but would be equally good for couples or friends. I will definitely return and would recommend it.

Just had a lovely tapas meal here for our wedding anniversary with my hubby and two son's... The food was delicious, tasty, flavoursome... Great value for money, staff very attractive, would highly recommend this place ... that we stumbled across looking for a coffee the week before, we'll be sampling breakfast on Sunday too, thanks for a lovely evening, well done counting house team, Karen and party

Excellent evening. Simple menu. Great service. Lovely atmosphere. Felt special due to rose petals and hearts scattered on tables, red roses , candles and heart shaped chocolates!

I took my parents, sister and my young children for breakfast this morning. We all had a full or small English and it was delicious. The service was great. I don’t live in Doncaster but my parents live nearby and they’ll definitely be back, as will I when I visit. Such a good find. And good value!

Called in on Saturday afternoon when it was quiet. Three other tables occupied with two to three people each who had already been served. Ordered two sandwiches and drinks.

The Counting House is hidden away in Bessacar Doncaster but is a lovely eatery. I’ve recently been for breakfast and met a friend for coffee and on both occasions the service has been great and the food is lovely. No high prices and the cakes and cupcakes are beautiful. With breakfast you get unlimited toast which my husband loved.

Visited on 26/11/18 for afternoon tea with my mum. We had a purple voucher which made it even more reasonably priced. Lots of food and lots of choice. Very fresh and tasty. Friendly staff and a lovely little spot for a catch up with friends or family.

The venue may seem daunting to find but google earth helps greatly. This is a lovely venue for a great meal which no one knows about! The food was excellent and certainly far better than expected [although that was based on stereotypical ideas]. Definatly somewhere to come back to. Loved it!

Have been seen here several times for breakfast, lunch and evening tapas and have always enjoyed the food. There is also a great choice of drinks and the atmosphere is brill. Just what Bessacarr shops needed!

Just had a lunch. The restaurant has a modern vibe with plenty of choices on the menu.

Nice place, nice staff and plenty of very good food and wine on offer.

Been popping here for coffee whenever I have time and eventually made it here for evening drinkies and tapas with mummy friends. Lovely night, great service and conversation with Simon who updated us with his plans....definitely recommend for day or night, great atmosphere and even better it's on our doorstep so we will continue to visit!
