We had a 3 night short break at this hotel. It was a wonderful experience. Staff were first class, being attentive, caring and nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing, with multiple choice every day. The room was fantastic and had a balcony, so one could look out over the beach and out too sea. As it was a wonderful experience we booked another break before we left for home.

We booked for the New Years Eve gala dinner as we were staying nearby (although not in the hotel). The service was perfect - the manager Neil was charming and all his team did an amazing job on the night. We couldn't fault a single thing. The food - and food choices - were very good, well presented and many items were local. The DJ was good - I love a good dance - and the whole atmosphere was festive. I don't often write reviews but we had such a great time and were so impressed by the evening, I wanted to let people know. The hotel is well places, great views and a great atmosphere. We look forward to visiting on a sunny day in future!

A lovely genteel hotel with outstanding views over Hope Cove both indoor & outdoor seating. Family run lovely staff & a fabulous cream tea. If you want the full afternoon tea( sandwiches, cakes, scones etc) you’ll need to book at least 24hours in advance. The Devon cream tea was unbearably good - 2 big scones each with lashings of clotted cream & jam with tea or coffee was very generous and worth the £8.50. What a perfect afternoon it was

I absolutely loved this place. It's a traditional seaside hotel. With some of the best views you could ask for. The service was exceptional, well more than that, it was the best service I've had in a long long time!! like how hotels used to be. The food was amazing the breakfast had everything you needed, It has an old fashioned style with an older clientele, but don't judge a book by its cover and try it. You will have a peaceful romantic or just a fun-filled trip. I've travelled a lot and stayed in many hotels. Never have I had quality service and such friendly staff who were there for the guest as much as this team.

An absolute hidden gem at Hope Cove. Has a nostalgic feeling of a seaside hotel from childhood but do not be put off from the dated decor. The service was above and beyond. We were celebrating a wedding anniversary and my husband's birthday and they even typed a special menu and decorated our dining table. The attention of service in the restaurant was impeccable. There are not many places today where you are made to feel appreciated as a guest and nothing is too much to ask. Fabulous views of the beach. Room wasn't anything special but service, location and calm atmosphere left is wanting to return.

Booked lunch ahead finding many others fully booked. What a result that they were...the sunday lunch was terrific, a proper lunch! The Cottage is a little traditional for our usual choice but this was far outweighed by the service and quality of food. Weve seen elsewhere comments on Covid measures but we found them not at all unreasonable...wear a mask for a bit whilst in circulation spaces and stay spaced out on checking in...nothing challenging here. The Cottage is known for it's amazing views and we enjoyed them whilst dining on properly cooked fare with great service. Will return

It looks as though dogs are allowed in the sitting room area near the entrance but not in the bar. This is a traditional hotel with an interesting history, and the bar area has a great view. Obviously loved by older people. We chose the two course meal for £15, and enjoyed both starters and mains. Service fine, staff pleasant, a proper dinner, not a pomegranate seed in sight. We were invited here for Sunday lunch by a relative and it was a very pleasant surprise. I had the seafood platter for starters (it was delicious) and asked for gluten free bread for the toast. No quibble at all, just a question asking if I wanted my bread roll replacing with a gluten free one. My main course was lemon sole and when it arrived the waiter asked who the gluten free one was for. I was really impressed - I didn't know there was a gluten free option to go for and thought this was excellent. The sweet trolley looked great - I assumed the fruit pavlova was gluten free but would expect they would have the details of all the desserts to let me know. Decaff coffee provided without a question. We stayed chatting for ages with no hassle from the staff and then spent more time on the terrace - the one with the fabulous view over Hope Cove, the beach and the sea.

A week at Hope Cove with my wife wouldn't be complete with Sunday lunch at the Cottage Hotel. This is probably the tenth time we've eaten here on a Sunday and it won't be the last. We had a pre lunch drink in the lounge, which is a nice start to an enjoyable occasion. Three courses for £19, including after dinner tea/coffee. My wife chose the mushroom risotto with mozzarella parcels for starter, which she said was delicious. I plumbed for the lamb kebab, nan bread, raita potatoes and salad. Very nice. We both chose the roast beef for the main, with Yorkshire pudding, roast and boiled potatoes and mixed veg. The beef was beautifully cooked and melted in the mouth. Great Yorkshire puds and roasters. For desert my wife chose the Bakewell tart with a small dish of trifle, whereas I went for the apple crumble and cream. Both proved to be an ideal pudding and were greatly enjoyed. A bottle of Rye Mill Chardonnay proved to be a suitably light accompaniment. All in all a very satisfying meal and highly recommended.

We have ate several times but took friends for an 80th birthday for Sunday lunch.William and his team made it special, 80's on the table and a specially printed menu for 80 celebrations were small extras but made it special for our guest.Excellent food and service and a sweet trolley that may be a reminder of another age but a stunning selection.Overall a great lunch and enjoyed by all of us.

I'll start by saying that we opted for the midweek, reduced price set menu. If we were to have paid full price, I would have been more disappointed and scored lower. The food overall was mixed, but overall of fairly good quality. Only 2 courses did I actively enjoy (hake and venison). The risotto was over cooked, to me. The others had some good elements but didn't really work (salted caramel butter was delicious, but was quite strange with the soup. Basil was very distracting to the lemon dish in my opinion). Again, perhaps due to the "using up ingredients" idea of the menu, 2 citrus desserts seemed too much. It was also frustrating not to know what the courses were, even after we'd arrived. If we'd seen the menu beforehand, maybe we would have reconsidered - but maybe this is the idea? Captive audience? It is also impossible to pick a wine because you don't know what you are getting. Effort had gone into the food though, it just felt like some of the ingredients were quite bluntly put together. The majority of the reduced score was because of service, though. We tried to book via phone over the course of 2 days, and had no answer. We then booked online. When calling to confirm our booking on the night, the lady who answered was a touch rude. When arriving, the same lady didn't make any effort to welcome us at all, and said she'd get someone (front of house manager). I'd also advise you make the front door/entrance clearer and more inviting. We were seated, drinks order taken, and then didn't have our existence acknowledged for 30 minutes. No bread etc. The first course was very small (no problem with that) but it was then a further 35 minutes until the next course. At an hour and 5 minutes in, we'd had just an amuse-bouche. At this point we were getting very hungry, and there was no apology or recognition of the delay. Is this the norm? The whole thing took 3.5 hours with about 30 minutes between each course. Courses would quite often come with almost no word said by the waiting staff - the youngest waitress was most friendly. The food was quite good though, and perhaps if we'd have seen the menu beforehand or decided to go for a la carte, we'd have been happier with it. Then again, we would have been expected to pay double - at which point, I think the quality falls well short of the Elephant Restaurant in Torquay for example, which would be the same price. I left feeling quite annoyed, which is unfortunate, given it was meant to be a midweek treat. Would we return? Maybe for a reduced price midweek a la carte. March 2023

Had a couple of super curries, one chicken and one veggie, on the Monday night special. Good value and the pub has a lovely friendly atmosphere. Would recommend!

Be aware: We were staying in a accommodation that had overbooked, which meant that we had to leave one day earlier than expected. We had no alternative but to drive home - we couldn't just hang around Dartmouth with nowhere to stay. We gave Taylors as much notice of cancellation as we got of having to leave, but Taylors charged us £40 for the cancellation. It was half-term week and every other restaurant we had been to prior to this had been fully booked - signage outside - so I would imagine that our table for 2 would have been filled. It just sticks in the craw getting punished for something completely beyond your control. In answer to your response: There is no point discussing it because there hasn't been a misunderstanding. Its not like we didn't show up. We gave you as much written notice as we had, when we were suddenly told to vacate our double-booked accommodation. I just wanted to bring to potential customers attention that if: They might be involved in a car accident OR One of their group might fall ill OR Weather issues might cause transport issues OR like us, we had to depart our accommodation unexpectedly because it had been double booked, THEN, they will forfeit a minimum of £40 - for 2 persons (more for a bigger party). This is just a warning that if a life event happens, and don't they just happen at the most inopportune times, then they are going to be gifting you £40 minimum to keep the Range Rovers purring over. This really spoilt a lovely break to say 'goodbye' to Dartmouth as a result of stage 4 metastatic bowel to lung cancer. Rockfish was great. Bayards Cove Inn was great. The highlight restaurant fined and punished us. I wish you all the success you deserve.
