Popped in for a light bite. The staff were warm and welcoming. The vegetable soup was thick and comforting with the most delicious croutons. The bacon, brie & cranberry sandwich went down a treat.

I expected 50 guests returning after the cremation service but almost 3 times as many turned up. The staff were delightful and so helpful, as more and more of us poured into the pub. The food was excellent and and the ambiance relaxed and happy. Thank you, Cormorant!

This was our first visit to The Cormorant. We highly recommend it for great food, great service and excellent atmosphere. For once there is somewhere that provides a good choice for proper vegetarians and also there are several gluten free options. Pricing is also realistic. Beats everything else in the area hands down!

Typical pub food really. Pie of the day was OK. Pork Belly was presented well although crackling was soft. Good selection of vegetables. The service and staff were excellent and friendly. Not cheap, however , that is based on location rather than quality. Had much better. Had worse.

We have eaten here twice recently, on both occasions the service was friendly and efficient. The food was very good, especially the Sunday roast. The ales were kept well and the wines were fine too. It was clean with a good atmosphere. If you enjoy eating out in pubs, it doesn’t come much better than this.

I cannot speak too highly of my recent experience at this lovely pub. I’d set the staff a tricky task of a sit-down lunch for 28 people with an age range from 4 to 80. The day could not have gone better, Manager Bailey and his staff were extremely helpful all afternoon, from rearranging tables and setting up, through to making sure that we had glasses for a toast and plates for our cake. All the pre ordered food arrived piping hot in the right place at the right time, it was all beautifully cooked and well presented. My experience here is of a lovely pub doing everything it can for its customer.

In need of a local lunch venue on our way back from Portsmouth, we stopped here a bit reluctantly as our last visit a few years back was not great but we needed to eat. We were blown away. Staff gave a very warm welcome - lots of them on duty and they couldn’t have been more polite or helpful. There was a funeral party there too but it was not intrusive ( either way) and the rest of the pub was quite full with other customers which was a good sign. ( It was empty last time we went!) The real highlight though was the food. Served promptly, it was delicious. We both ate a bacon, brie and cranberry sauce sandwich - something we often order on pub trips and it was one of the best we have ever had. Along with a soft drink it was under a tenner each! We will be back! (Toilets were clean and tidy too)

Sunday lunch - two course deal. Choice of meats/chicken/fruit & nut roast. We asked for gravy on the side which came in individual boats, vegetarian gravy for nut roasts. Nicely presented on the plates, each had stuffing/roast potatoes/roasted carrots/cabbage/cauliflower cheese/mashed carrot&swede/gigantic yorkshire pudding - obviously homemade! Many of our party had not been before and commented on how good it was. Our table had a 3 hour time limit which we were fast approaching but the waitress moved the restaurant table plan around to allow us to stay to enjoy our coffee and mints.

Went with friends to celebrate a birthday. From the moment we got there to when we left the experience was great. A large dining area with plenty of space between the tables. A lot of dog walkers with their 4 legged friends, & as we are dog lovers, it gave a nice friendly vibe to the place. I chose the roast beef. Only had to wait about 15 minutes for the food. A huge plateful. Piping hot. Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, Roast potatoes, Cauliflower cheese, cabbage, carrots. Plenty of gravy (Homemade & not the instant stuff). For desert I had the Raspberry & white chocolate bread & butter pudding. Heaven on a plate. Nice friendly staff on hand. Altogether a great way to spend a Sunday lunchtime. Definatly will be going back again.

We had a table booked for 7 people at midday. I had the pie on a previous visit and saw 1 portion of steak and kidney pie on the specials board so I pre booked that before another guest got there first! We were shown to our table and drinks ordered followed by the meal order. All meals arrived at the same time. All plates emptied. No complaints. The pie was, yet again, a delight. Excellent polite and helpful service from the lady front of house and from the young male server. Thoroughly recommended.

We visited here on a Thursday lunchtime, luckily we had booked otherwise would have been turned away. The front of house ladies are very friendly and efficient. The food, although may be classed as slow by some, came well presented and plentiful, we were in no hurry. the menu had full and half portion prices. Specials board was varied, in addition there were 3 "of the day boards" Pie / Quiche / hot pudding. The Cheese and Ham quiche came with a salad, maybe a little dressing could have been applied, but again some like, some don't. The hot pudding - a very delicious Lemon and Orange sponge with custard! Lots of sauce and lashings of custard.

I did ask to change potato’s (which they did) for deep fried ones that were not much better (I couldn’t be bothered to maiden again! Yorkshires weren’t that nice. But the meat and veg was nice. Would not do roast agin but been told pies are good in the week so willing to try…. Mainly as staff were so friendly:)

The area we were given was ideal, even for less mobile guests (only a couple of steps), plenty of parking too. My wife and I visit quite regularly for dinner but not for a couple of months and when we returned it was very disappointing. My wife had the pork belly, one of her favourites but the meat portion was very small even for her and was overcooked such that the bottom of the meat was hard and inedible. The vegetables were OK, the beer was good, and despite my fish being a little overcooked it was quite nice enough. We will probably go back to see if this was a one off or the new norm given the good meals we have had in the past.

Visited for a Sunday dinner in the new year with family. Had a table booked, we were welcomed quickly and shown to our table and was told someone will come over to the table shortly. We waited almost 15 minutes, and had to ask them to come over, for them to eventually come over 'sorry didnt realise you were here already', and order our drinks. Waited another 10 minutes for the drinks (party of 4, one beer and 3 cokes) Food arrived fairly quickly, vegetarian option was a standard nut roast which was basically just stuffing. the gravy was almost water like which made it almost uneatable, I ended up getting it wrapped up to take home, but even then it wasn't great once I heated it back up with proper gravy. The meat eaters said their food was okay. Not once did anyone come to the table to ask if everything was okay, so we didn't end up complaining until they took the plates away a while later, even then they were unbothered. Absolutely would not visit again, poor service and poor food

Visited for lunch with my wife. The usual stresses & strains of everyday life generally mean we get little time for anything, so we try & get out on a Friday lunchtime, at least once per month, just to switch off for an hour or so. We visited The Cormorant as a spur of the moment decision. Both of us hadn’t been in there for several years, the last time was a family friend’s wake. I have to say, very pleasantly surprised. Great services, food genuinely looked like it was prepared & cooked on the premises (the menu illustrates their local suppliers). A great plate of pub food, & better than some restaurants we have eaten in. I know it is difficult for pubs to turn a decent profit these days, without a reliance on food, but my only criticism would be, there didn’t seem a lot of space if you just wanted a drink at the bar. We will return. Highly recommend.

Good planning allowed the general public to have access to indoor and outdoor tables. We were impressed with the way staff dealt with the COVID 19 precautions plus seating allowed good spacing between tables. Toilets were very clean. Our main course was ‘slow cooked pork belly’ and ‘pie of the day’ which was turkey and ham. Both were well cooked including the vegetables. Both main courses were of good portion size. The dessert menu included ‘Éton Mess’ which was presented in a rather eye catching way and was delicious. We have been here many times. The food has, over a period of time, gone down hill. We came here tonight as it is close to my dads house, and he invited us. I ordered the pork belly, as nothing else appealed. It arrived burnt and dried up. I told the staff, who said they would get another, but if there wasn’t one, what would I like in stead? I offered the rib eye steak as an alternative. A bit later a peppered steak arrived, not a rib eye, and It was heavily peppered. I ate the steak, but was amazed to find that we had been charged foe a rib eye on the bill. Sadly my dad had already paid, and I didn’t want to cause a scene in front of him, but I personally would of questioned it, as he had been charged for something he hadn’t had! I will call them tomorrow and have it out with them.

Went for a meal last week with a friend, first time venturing out. The pub looks lovely, very organised and clear signage. Food excellent. The only reason not 5 stars is we had to wait half an hour before someone asked if we'd been served, once we had a drink had to wait an hour for our food. Only 1 person serving tables and they were busy. Poor girl looked terrified when she served us. I think they could do with a more experienced server. In the end the barman was waiting on tables. Had a lovely evening and would go again though. The lady at the door was very efficient.

Our first visit since before lockdown was very disappointing. We had to wait over an hour for our meals but no-one bothered to tell us of the prolonged wait when we arrived even though we had pre-booked. When the food eventually arrived both meals were overcooked and dry, cremated sausages with mash and lasagne with a burnt topping so not very good value for money. We didn't complain at the time because we just wanted to finish and leave! We fully understand that pubs are working under difficulties but we have been to several other pubs since the re-opening with far better service and food. This was not the usual high standard of service or food that we used to receive before lockdown and it will be a long time before we return.

The bread on my overpriced ploughman's was like a rock. the staff were cheerful and attentive and apologetic - but the piece they replaced it with was at least yesterdays! Surely your chef knows if you sprinkle a hunk of bread with water and pop it in the oven it comes out warm and 'fresh'? Had I realised the price of the ploughman's I would have had something else - as this was a Chef Special we weren't aware of the cost.

We passed by the pub recently and noted that the tables were well spaced out, so decided to venture out this Saturday for a meal. We felt very comfortable regarding the social distancing, despite being 'of a certain age'. Everything was scrupulously clean. The food was excellent and the staff was attentive and friendly. We have booked to go again next month with family.

We went for a family birthday celebration meal and we weren't disappointed. We were greeted at the door and taken to our table. We were given our menus and ordered our drinks. The service was really good, didn't have to wait even though it was busy. We had starters, most had deep fried brie with cranberry jam which was great. For main courses we had, fish pie, steak and mushroom pie. Burgers, steak and chicken stacker. Everyone enjoyed their meal, couldn't fault it. Some had desserts which they all loved. We will definitely be back and very soon. Thank you all for a great night

Booked a table at 1830 on a Thursday. Shown to our table by a pleasant waiter. Menu was good. The service was swift and the meals very good. The choice of beers was limited to the new trend for hoppy brews with the exception of Seafarers, this was in perfect condition. I would go back again

Wrote a review a about this venue about two months ago not the best review for good reasons but a friend said he quite liked it so the six of us booked a table when we got there they had wi group of a out 15 women and a table in the pub part service was good waitress although young was polite and friendly took our drinks order drinks arrived and the proceeded to take our our orders I ordered the cheesy garlic bread last time was four very large slices of bloomer a bit to much this time four slices of bloomer cut just right not to much not to little main course I went for the Gammon steak with honey and cheese chips and salad. tasted very good chips were just right not to soft on the inside slightly crispy on the outside finished off with a Eton mess overall all the meals we had were first class service was great a d price was reasonable this place is well worth another visit just one small thing which apply to many places where are the carrots and peas and cauliflower not every one likes courgette and the like but overall well, worth the 13 mile trip

Does perfection depend on one or all of the following, location, service, food, beer, decor, other customers, pricing? If all of those are above average and present together is that rare and worthy of note? In my view it does and therefore on the occasion of my visit yesterday this pub gets 5 Stars.Portchester is a magical place set at the head of Portsmouth Harbour, a precious jewel set in base metal. Both the village and castle are a delight for the eye. The Cormorant sits well in these surroundings and internally is unfussy, pub/restaurant like and comfortable. All staff seen were friendly and attentive, and sufficient in numbers to ensure swift attention to customer requests. There is a wide range of good pub grub to choose from at competative prices. No fewer than four real ales were on offer during my visit.I enjoyed a full flavoured plate of ham, egg and chips, accompanied by a pint of Seafarers and another of Timothy Taylor Landlord, all for less than £19.The Cormorant has never disappointed me but I do think yesterday it was as good as it gets and may it long continue.

Excellent food. I had the roast turkey and all the trimmings, husband had the roast beef. Top marks to the chef as both meals were spot on. Service was good especially as we were a large party.

Expensive for what is clearly budget supplied food for a standard breakfast. For £1.50 more you could have their top meal treble most items but too much to eat. I had finished my breakfast and went to the toilet leaving my cup of tea to be finished on my return and my coat still on the chair. On my return the table had been cleared by a rude waitress. To be fair, the proprietor did offer me a replacement tea but it shouldn't have happened in the first place being so eager to clear an obviously occupied table. It is a typical roadside caff but expensive and rude service.

Have driven past many times and decided that we must give this place a go. Wish we hadn't bothered! The menu is quite limited and what makes it even worse is that both of us have issues with peppers - capsicum and chilli . Only one thing on the menu that I liked and didn't have some form of pepper in it. On the upside hubby had a burger that he really enjoyed but apart from that, considering that the venue is overlooking the creek with an abundance of swans, the food is a complete let-down. Won't bother going back as there are plenty of other venues in the area with more extensive menu's that don't seem to be dependent on peppers!!

Please get the basics right and let the Guinness settle properly. Lad had no reason to rush it mid afternoon.

Food is fine, service is very slow but friendly (the staff always comment they are under staffed but this is strangely always when I go). The owners state that they they do not accept cash (how can this still be allowed post Covid?) but if you try add to add a tip to your bill, the waiter/waitress tells a story that it needs to be cash or otherwise they have to share it with the kitchen staff etc. Incredible it may seem but this has happened three times to me. I only go there as my wife’s aunt likes the view.
