On looking at my previous reviews I see it is a decade since my last visit and obviously it has changed hands since then. The place is still shabby and lacking in atmosphere and there is a damp smell lingering throughout the building. Somehow the building seems wrong but I can't really explain that one away and it is not the fault of the management. Whichever way you look at it the place seems unfriendly and not helped by the various people I spoke to either. Not rude exactly but dismissive and disinterested. We had the carvery but I have to say it didn't look much like the photos on their social media page. The cauliflower cheese was nice but everything else seemed a bit tasteless. The meat was edible but I can't say that about the roast potatoes which didn't taste of anything and the bigger ones were hard in the middle so I left them. My husband also left half of his cider as he said it tasted 'off'. Interestingly my review of their carvery all those years ago also criticised the roast potatoes which were not even brown then, surely it is not that hard to roast potatoes? I appreciate different chefs were involved so maybe it is the oven. The place was not very busy which says a lot considering all the local carveries are often fully booked but maybe it was because we went quite late. There are cheaper and better carveries nearby so would I go back, possibly in another ten years time but not any time soon.

What a amazing place with amazing staff regardless of any negative reviews. Shame they keep the negative reviews and don't post the good ones that I know have been wrote tonight. Went here for my daughters 18th tonight. 20 of us. All food was amazing all at the same time and all with smiles on there faces. Nothing was too much trouble and I love coming to this place every time everything is how it is stated. Always hot always fresh and always enjoyable and affordable. Thank u so much

Firstly, I am local….. Secondly, I speak the truth… Thirdly, I am glad that the prices remain reasonable to the working class family man…… Although the decor might be a little bit tiring, the hospitality compensates…… On the last at least…. This place does amazing food…. Fantastic variety and the special board fluctuates…. I just don’t think that anybody that is down earth Can fully understand what it must be like to run a business. It’s like the same goes spread all your cards out and choose wisely. I have eaten all over the world up and down throughout the UK…. And I don’t remotely care what negativity comments I read on here about the coppice…. I salute every individual under the Employment of the establishment. Therefore, I totally recommend anyone to try this place. If you are too posh to wash and this place is not for you.. And if you do not suffer by piles Then clearly, you are the perfect backside …. And as Dell boy once said…. Bonjour …..

Prior to visiting this pub I read the reviews but felt I would go with a open mind. Well what can I say but the management have obviously taken on board any previous comments. The staff were friendly, well presented and attentive. The pub does look tired but clean . Food was good value for money, home cooked and well presented. A traditional family pub which was busy with lots of children in the play area . I'm sure this pubs like many are struggling to make the books balanced and can't afford expensive soft furnishings and decor . All I can say is give this traditional family pub a try . Good value ,good food and if you want more unfortunately you have to pay more . So long as they serve good food ,are friendly and are clean I will keep going !

Went here for a carvery was bitterly disappointed from start to finish we got seated by a very young waitress right next to a saucepan on the floor because a leak had just appeared even though the weather has been glorious for 2 days. Then we waited for our order to be taken which was fine then when the kids drinks arrived they was served in 1/2 pint glasses with beer logos on them which is a big no no as it’s false advertising and kids should have drinks in beer glasses, Then we was just about to go up for the carvery when I looked into the kitchen and saw the chef cough into her hands then continued to cook without any washing of hands The carvery was ok ish but when we saw one of the waitresses stick her hands into the roast potatoes and start eating it that was too much so we spoke to the owner who agreed it wasn’t on what we had seen however he should be on the floor overseeing the staff sorry but we won’t return it need a serious overhaul decor wise and some serious staff training to come even close to what it should be

Avoid at all costs. The pub is rundown on the inside and looks more like a bingo hall. It’s very dirty. The staff behind the bar don’t seem to care, quite rude and not very welcoming. The cider I ordered tasted like the pipes had not been cleaned, it was very musty. The food was barely edible. The burger was dry and the chips still tastes frozen. The onion rings tasted like they had been drowned in oil. Not what we had expected. Definitely not one to return to.

We wanted to try the carvery here so booked a table. Restaurant is very odd when you walk into the bar area as you can’t see where the restaurant part is. There was also a stale smell. When we found the restaurant we were seated by a very young waitress. We sat and waited for someone to come and take our drinks order but it didn’t happen even though they looked at us several times just sat at our table. Another couple came in and were seated and immediately had their drinks and food order taken and then told to go up to the carvery when they were ready. We still hadn’t even been asked about a drink yet! We had waited 20 minutes at our table from being seated with absolutely no acknowledgement from any staff so we got up and walked back to our car. I feel sure they probably didn’t even realise we had gone seeing as they paid no attention to the fact we were waiting for so long. Terrible lack of service and no care for its patrons. Absolutely won’t go back and definately do not recommend.

Really good carvery at reasonable prices. The 'standard' size carvery was more than enough, so goodness knows why anyone would want to tackle the 'extra large' plate version! Apple crumble portions were massive as well. Service was a little slow at times but very friendly and polite. I think they just need a couple more staff. Excellent meal though.

Booked Sunday carvery for four adults in this dog friendly pub. Made very welcome and given menu on arrival. We all opted for the carvery with a choice of three meats. All meats were cooked to perfection, and a good portion served. The vegetable selection were excellent and cooked yo perfection. All the food was piping hot and we were all satisfied. Great choice of desserts, presented by pleasant and efficient staff. A lovely treat on our doorstep and really appreciated.

We used to come here regularly 30 years ago, in fact we would bring holidaymakers here it was that good. Having been away from the area for years, we were interested to see how the place had fared. When we entered, there were kids running around the entrance, and we noted a disco being set up in the main bar by a man of around 80, and a young bloke engrossed on his phone. The lady behind the bar, who made it clear she didn't work there, assured us it was nice and quiet in the lounge. We were asked if we would be eating, but the menu looked uninspiring, and the whole place didn't look that clean, so we declined, ordering drinks only. My ale had a slight vinegary taste, indicating the pipes hadn't been cleaned, but my wife's peach cider was excellent. Then the disco started up, at blistering volume, music from the 1980's which was not to our taste, but it was bearable, although when I ordered my next beer I had to do so by sign language, as speaking was out of the question. Another couple came into the lounge and ordered a bowl of chips, otherwise the kids were still running around, a few people in the pool room, with a boy rolling on the floor, but nobody in the bar as it was too painful. Then the music changed to electronic techno for some inexplicable reason, the secret of a disco is to read the room and play to the tastes of the audience, which admittedly was difficult as there wasn't one. I would have mentioned this to the bar person and elderly 'DJ' but conversation was impossible, so we left.

Three of us and our dog visited The Coppice today for the Sunday Carvery. They were so busy it was a lovely atmosphere. Everyone was enjoying the carvery, filling their plates and it looked so good. When it was our turn to go up we had a generous amount of meat and a lovely yorkshire pud and stuffing then helped ourselves to veg. It was SUPERB. So well cooked, the meat was first class. Hot plates, hot food. Music at the right volume so we weren't shouting over each other. Really good. The staff were great. Can't wait to go back. They EVEN gave us some meat for our dog on a little plate. We've never been offered that before at a pub roast and we've had a lot over the years so thank you Coppice, we will be back :)

This is a nice pub/restaurant with good parking facilities and is easy to find. The menu was not extensive but there is enough choice. We were in early and were invited to order drinks right away which we did. The menu book was on the table so we were able to choose at our leisure. Our order was taken but in face we had to wait quite a while for our first course. The meals were very good and hot. The staff were friendly and helpful. We asked for the dessert menu which was not forthcoming. We had to go to the bar to ask again. We ordered our desserts and again they were a long time coming. In the midst of this a band was setting up - it being Friday night - which meant the outside door was open for a long time and it was cold. This room we were in was not huge and the band's equipment was vast meaning it would be noisy. We did feel that we were being waited on to finish as when we got up from the table the staff moved the chairs and the table so that people could sit and listen to the band. However it was an enjoyable evening with friends.

Eventually got our order.. the kids sausages were the cheapest things ever.. nasty looking and greasy.. the lasagne was plain.. not homemade as advertised and tasteless.. when confronted barman/chef about this matter he was extremely rude and very reluctant to give a refund as meals were unsatisfactory! This place could do with ALL staff learning about customer service and if they can't supply food worthy of eating.. just stick to providing alcohol!

The ale was excellent. We fully intended to go there for dinner on the following evening but the weather was awful, very wet, most of our gear was back in the motorhome in the repair shop and we did not have the luxury of being able to change into dry clothes if we got soaked! Being fairly local, but never having visited the Coppice before, we thought we would try it because of the lovely large, safe & well equipped play area. The gardens are absolutely beautiful & very well maintained. On arrival, we were very pleasantly surprised to discover it is run by Derek and jo. (Landlord and landlady of our previous local years ago pre children). We decided to return with children the following weekend for my husbands birthday. The food was absolutely amazing (as we knew it would be). Massive portions, well presented, extensive menu choices and much to hubby's delight a wide selection of real ales. My 7 year old said it was the best ham egg and chips he had ever tasted! Derek and jo's food has always been way above the standard of any other pub we have visited, and we have visited a few!The ingredients vere high quality, it was all freshly prepared and piping hot. Absolutely delicious. We were all so full we couldnt manage an evening meal!Cannot reccomend it highly enough. Lovely surroundings, fantastic hosts, food delicious. Cant wait to return for carvery.

Staying in nearby St Day, we came here for dinner on the first night of the holiday. The inside of the pub is a bit dingy and tired and we both said that, if the weather was poor and we needed to sit inside, we may have gone somewhere else. Whilst we don't expect someone to welcome us with open arms, it was still a bit difficult to raise a smile out of the person serving us. The atmosphere from the locals there made us feel like we were the outsiders too. That said, it was very pleasant sat outside the front of the pub and the food itself was nice, though the pesto on my wife's pizza was a bit overpowering and so she couldn't finish it.Perhaps we came here on an off day, but the place could be fantastic with a few changes.

The sign outside offers 'a warm welcome' er OK! On entering met the landlady behind the bar who barely spoke, ordered drinks and food. The place was very quiet and we were the first to order food, basic pub lunch fayre, after 35 minutes wait the food finally arrives without a word from the landlady. I mentioned that they don't exactly rush themselves in the kitchen, to which the reply was " well it's only me and 'im here" as she stomped off!!To be fair my ham egg and chips was perfectly OK, my partners sausage, mash and gravy had dry mash and undissolved gravy granules in it.You know that feeling when you meet someone who just shouldn't be in the hospitality industry. . . . . . . .

Wanted to have a nice pub lunch with my parents before leaving tomorrow and some friends of theirs had recommended here. It was flat for my Mum as she had broken her leg recently and couldn't get around well yet.We had been warned there was a wait as they had some walkers in for lunch, but we were relaxed and not in a hurry.Didn't think much of the lack of attention and struggle to get attention for a menu as friendly customers at the bar offered theirs.Waited well over an hour for the food even though the group had eaten and left a long time before and the place was pretty empty. Initially it looked okay, but the three battered fish were awful. Either they had been pre cooked a long time ago and kept in oven,or was very freezer burnt as they were very dry and chewy all the way through. The friendly landlady from reviews had a face like thunder and looked very put out stomping around clearing tables, so we decided not to complain. When I went to the bar to get some more drinks the landlord looked at me briefly and turned away and disappeared. Waited about ten minutes then decided to call it a day.The customers at the bar are the only positive there as they were open and friendly.

A group of 15 of us went for lunch following a walk in the area. We pre-ordered a variety of meals - fish and chips, jacket potatoes etc. All the meals were cheap as were the drinks. The service was friendly and they did manage to bring an extra meal to the group for a late eater. The meals did take a while to come and the meals reflected the price.

Like other reviews this venue is unwelcoming.. And the man behind the is usless! Couldn't handle the till, underpoured our drink no please or thank you let alone a hi or goodbye. Kept ignoring us & was giving away free doubles ( customers paying then asking if he could give a cheeky top up... free pouring spirits! Obviously not the first time ) Young lady pleasent and friendly (when spoken too) very clicky one group of local clientele were rude to us personally. Didn't eat but the food did look good. More of a social club than a pub.

Went here tonight for an evening meal with family down from Devon. The pub was very empty when we arrived (on another couple in there). There were two staff stood by the bar, free, when we walked in and neither said anything to us or offered us a menu. So it wasn't a very warm welcome. Then when we asked for a menu they just handed it over, again without saying much. We then sat down, decided what to eat and ordered. One member of staff couldn't even use the system to take our order so had to wait then for the older of the two to come and help. Again, she wasn't overly friendly. It wasn't looking promising, however my opinion changed when the food came out! The portion sizes were massive, good quality for money. We also didn't have to wait too long for food. We all left afterwards very full. I would go again but not in a massive hurry. For a small village it is a good place for pub grub.

My wife, myself and 4 kids arrived at 8:30pm after a day in Falmouth and we got a table along with 3 more family of ours. The menu was quite varied and the food very good, as was the service and to top it off we won a large whole chicken in a meat raffle being drawn that night as each pound you spend on drink or food gets you a raffle ticket. This was a great idea as we were excited about winning a prize whilst having our meal. The desserts were great too and all very reasonably priced. Will be going again next year,Wednesday if we can for meat raffle.

Went for a family meal.Extremely strange layout for a pub, but clean and comfortable. We ordered food and drinks and then more drinks and more as the starters took 45mins to come out, however a table of 8 had just ordered before us but we were the only two tables eating at the time. After 1 1/2hrs the mains came out. Food was nice, good sized portions. However don't think it was worth the was wait. I went up to the bar to order more drinks and the lady behind the bar was obviously not impressed that I disturbed her conversation and she didn't even engage with me to busy talking to the locals at the bar, my change was dumped on the bar, very rude. Reasonable prices good food but not really an inviting family pub more of a local pub for local drinkers.

We've been visiting this place for many years and have seen quite a few managers come and go. However, the new incumbents have changed the place quite dramatically. Notably there is so much furniture, in the nature of small tables and little stools that I can hardly imagine there is much room for many customers anymore. This pub serves a local brew of beer which may be an acquired taste, my husband doesn't like the stuff. I drink only coffee when out: at The Coppice now this consists of an expression in a larger cup with hot water to top up with. Very strange. I have never been served coffee like this anywhere else before. We haven't eaten here with this management team in place but I was talking with someone I know on our last visit who told me that he and his family eat there at least once every week so that must mean that it is reasonably good for them to return that often.Parking is pretty good and Disabled access is reasonable, there is a Wheelchair Accessible Toilet, but as before stated the main bar is so crammed full of stuff that access is virtually denied everyone. There is a pleasant garden and a terrace to spend time in, but, another but, it is always very windy there so I'd recommend taking something to keep the chill at bay, even on a sunny day.

I had to remind the lady 3 times. She seemed panicked and frustrated. Carvery was served 12:30pm. A lovely Carvery good choice of vegetables with choice of 3 meats. All very well cooked. ( I received my coffee money back. And had a coffee on the house at 12:45pm). Maybe it was a one off day but. May I suggest that The Coppice switch on the coffee machine at the start of the shift to avoid customers having to wait 45 minutes.

Having only recently moved to this area we decided to try out this pub/restaurant as we want to take our friends somewhere when they come down later this month. It was nice and quiet, the landlord and landlady were pleasant and chatty. There was a nice choice of meals and we opted for the lighter bite menu. We ordered gammon ham, egg, chips and peas. There were two pieces of ham and it was really lovely. The chips were just right and the egg too. One of us had a dessert which was a blackberry and apple crumble with ice cream with was delicious. The prices were good and we had a thoroughly good meal. We will be taking our friends here. The seating was comfortable and there was a wood burner in the corner - very welcoming.

The lovely gent who served us got his wife Zara to help us with locating the keys which luckily where found and left at the RLNI across but was closed, she managed to find someone who got the keys So thank you so much for your help lovely people and for the ice creams! 🥰 wishing you all the best x

I will start by saying the restaurant did reduce our bill and throw in a few free extras but we were very surprised by the quality and portioning of the food. At the time the cafe was very quiet but the staff seemed a little bit chaotic. Orders not being put through properly, items missed off and not knowing what beer they had available. A couple of us ordered the chicken burger (£13) and my son had the kids version (£8.50) but his came with chips. I was pretty shocked when we both received exactly the same sized portion. A small bun, 1/2 a small chicken fillet and one piece of lettuce, not exactly worth £13. The staff did even comment that they there was an issue but still felt it was fine to serve and just expect people to pay. The pizzas were but ok but again surprised when we we charged £3 for 2-3 sliced olives as an extra. We've eaten at many other places up and down the coast and based on our experience we would not return.
