Been going here for probably nigh on 20 years. As far as I can tell it has been run by the same family all that time. The son took over from his father a few years back and the quality has never faltered. The only issue I have is that it is only open three days a week, and at that not even all day. I can understand why, but obviously it would be awesome if us locals had access to fish and chips all day every day.

Amazing staff very friendly make you feel at home. Food is incredible not had a better chippy in my life. Fast and delicious food. More people should get this food.

Real potatos make the best Real chips, perfect fresh battered fish and cheesy chips well pure yummm.

Reliable chippy - excellent prices and decent food.

By far and away the best chippy I know of anywhere in the region. The food is faultless, fresh, delicious well presented. You can tell the owners take pride in sourcing quality ingredients. Just some of the reasons it deserves your visit: * a great range of options, lunchtime boxes, half portions of chips etc * smaller portion options to satisfy all appetites and budgets * unexpected delights, such as halloumi fries, ‘spicy’ curry sauce * the proprietor is a lovely chap. Working hard to deliver a great product to customers. Always friendly and helpful, along with all the staff I encounter there * clean, bright premises with great signage * despite a broad menu offering all sorts of options, they do the staples brilliantly. Fish and chips is sourced, cooked and served as good as it gets. * tartare sauce is served in a little pot, you don’t just get a measly sachet I really would describe it as a ‘hidden gem’. Its head and shoulders above all its local competitors.

Popped in whilst working in the area, ordered the Lite Bite fish, chips and curry sauce, £4.50, great value and the food was delicious, chips are some of the nicest I've had in a long while, the fish was a good size and spicy curry sauce complimented it well. Only had to wait a short while for the fish, gentleman who served was pleasant so all in all a good experience fora first visit, local residents are very lucky to have a great, traditional chippy in the area, I'll definitely be back.

Been going for a few years and never been disappointed. Won't go anywhere else now. Every meal we have had has been top quality from pies and puddings to fish peas and scampi.

The food was overall okay, the bitesize pieces of meat tasted much better than the full-size fish. Chips burnt and tasteless.

Fish and chip shop's are a UK tradition and this place really holds true to those traditional values associated with a well run shop. It's a staple, the best fish and chip's around and a Walton le-dale icon in our view. We see the interaction they have on Facebook with their customers with a view to always improve and applaud them in every aspect. Check the opening times and make sure you order in advance if you are busy because there's a reason this place often has queues running out the door.

This is our go to chippy, the fish is huge its like free willy on your plate and cheaper than most places. All portion sizes are fab. Great food great prices great staff ill never go anywhere else.

Been happily using this chippy for years, but covid and/or the war seem to have crushed it... Prices have rocketed (more than others) and the food quality has sadly gone the other way... The final straw for me was starting to charge 25p (!!) for a small paper bag. A real shame.

Great food, friendly staff, not overpriced and plenty to choose from on the menu.

This is one place that has maintained food quality and portion size over the years. They've not cheaped out by reducing the food quality or reducing the portions to keep up with the inflation and as expected, increased prices fairly. I must say this took me back a few years to the great food that you could get anywhere, but it's quite rare these days. Highly recommend this place and don't get put off by the prices as it's well worth it. Chips were fluffy and delicious and so is the fish, absolutely brilliant

By far the best Chippy not just in terms of food but also for the passion they put into sourcing the best ingredients and keeping customers up to date on new items and new offers using social media. Ordering is a breeze via Facebook and even when I order for 15+ people on a Friday Lunchtime they somehow manage to get it done and hot on time! Chip Shops are having a hard time of it lately with the cost of produce increasing and the limited availability of frying oil not to mention the cost of those fryers 🙀 Support your local chippy or try a new one if your in another area…you won’t be disappointed 👍

Lovely food. Had the pollock which was delish. Chips were very nice and fluffy and soft which I love. Only criticism is the mushy peas aren't mushy peas they are processed peas which don't really work

Been getting my chippy teas here for the last two years. The plaice is my favourite followed by steak pudding & the two types of curry sauce. You won’t be disappointed give it a try there is a reason it’s often queued out of the door. Old saying service & civility (Code for) the staff are all pleasant & competent & the main thing the food is always good that what keeps us all going back.

Lovely fish and chips - lots of options

Visited tonight. I am very satisfied. Although I must mention, I walked in, granted the shop was full at the time, but 3 to 4 minutes later another gent walked in and was served before me. Not a massive issue as I don't mind but having an allergy to cod this could have left me without a fish had the shop been low an the other man ordered haddock. But by the by, I asked the gentleman who I assume is the owner /manager, to mark my order as I have allergies. Straight away instructed his staff to make sure this was done. This guy knows his stuff an how to run his business. I was engaged in conversation, I ordered scampi he offered a complimenting condiment which didn't even cross my mind, but thoroughly enjoyed. Just before receiving my order he leaned over to his staff an asked if everything for my order was accounted for, his staff confirmed, he then pointed out my haddock was still not wrapped up. This guy is on the ball. I think his staff should put a little bit more effort into the business as he pays their wages. One customer next to me asked if they had a busy night, the girls are obviously shy, the lady then asked "do you talk? Have you had a busy night?" "yes" then giggled amongst themselves. I'm not complaining about this. Just more constructive feedback. All in all a very good Chippy. The backbone of the nation. I 100 percent recommend this Chippy. The fish are huge. The chip portions are good. I got a regular and couldn't finish it. I saw a review saying the large chips wasn't big enough..... I think someone is just greedy and wants to stuff their face beyond recognition. My local chippy is same price for fish. The fish from the contented sole are like 2 fillets from my local. I'm actually ready for a nap after that feed. See you next Friday.

Excellent fish chips peas and curry, and £3 cheaper than John dory, The owner/ operator is passionate about his fish.

I have just started using this chippy and can hand on heart say they are the best chips I have ever had from a chippy. Double cooked chips!!! I love a chippy so I know what I am talking about. I wont be going anywhere else from now on.

Really enjoyed tea from the contented sole tonight. Our local chippy had a dip, so drive a bit further and always wanted to try here - wasn't disappointed. Nice fish, plenty of chips - had 3 large chips for a family of 4 but ended up not using 1.

Absolutely loved tea tonight!! It was so fresh and tasty! We had the mushy pea fritters, hash browns, onion rings, chips and the curry sauces. It all went down a treat! My recommendation is mushy pea fritters with curry sauce on top... Amazing! Great, friendly service too!

Don't live far from here and just been told that you have reopened just as this terrible virus is about to reach its peak. We are all being uged to stay inside to protect lives and you are encouraging locals to come out and get a bag of chips - hardly worth risking lives over. Some of us are taking this seriously and will remember those businesses that put money first when this is all over.

I've been going to the Contented Sole for the last few months on a weekly basis and am very impressed. Nice crispy batter on the fish and the chips are without a doubt the best around. Staff always pleasant and chatty. Try it!

Mediocre. Steak pudding wasn't too nice, large chips too small, gravy to runny. Price was a little too high
