The Codfather in St Edmundsbury

Horrible chips. Cold, chewy and scabby. They had obviously been around for several hours and reheated at least once. The service was poor, to compliment the food.

Always used to use this place and it was good but had a break for a few months and just had a terrible delivery, tasting charred

Nice fresh food cooked to order and good service. Even have a little table inside to eat at. Chips were cooked to perfection and the sausage in batter was tasty with just the right amount of batter.

Order food from just eat never turned up and lost £24 Be very careful Just eat absolutely useless Really disappointed Great food normally however will not use again after this experience Sorry

This used to be the best fish & chips I have ever tasted but they now have a change of staff and what they now serve is so oily and the taste is disgusting, it seems they are cooking in old oil. Bring back the staff who were there before as they were friendly and the fish and chips were fantastic.

This chippy has gone down hill must be new management. Asked for Haddock and chips what I got was batter and chips! The place is so filthy needs a good clean and someone who can cook a Fish.

A Lunchtime Session on Market Day and he has two Battered Sausages and a Fishcake ready! I asked for Sausage and Chips wrapped up and I would like to put Salt and Vinegar on myself. As I am getting the money ready, he puts it on himself! I am rather OCD about my salt and Vinegar and he did it wrong! He then decides he wants another 80p because he chose to give me Large Chips, I suggested he can keep them so he backed down. They were horrible! I put them in the bin!

Poor quality fish and chips. The food was cold and not fresh. The fish had a chewy texture. Not what I expected for the money.

Im not normally the sort of person who would leave a review but after the way i was rudely spoken to and the terrible fish & chips i received,i strongly feel the need to let people know my experience. Firstly, i cant believe (with this covid 19) that The Codfather will only accept cash, that is appalling. When placing my order of fish and chips twice, this guy, short in height with short dark hair and a beard told me in a raised voice to get outside and wait for my food, he wasnt even the one serving me, there was no need to speak in such a rude manner and i know if my Boyfriend was with me, he would have told them to stick their food where the Sun dont shine for being so rude but i am a very laid back girl and dont like any confrontation of any sort so i waited patiently outside for my food, there was 8 people outside and i was 4th in the queue but i was not called for my food until about 40mins later,yes they had orders being made up for deliveroo but thats a ridculous time to wait when i was 4th in queue, i only live 5 mins drive from this Codfather but my Boyfriend and i found all the food to be lukewarm, we thought the chips tasted yukky, like they had been cooked in old oil and the little batter on the fish had such a horrible flavour,we threw away 80% of the food, lived in Bury St Edmunds all my life and eaten at many fish and chip shops in Bury and their service and food was by far the most horrible experience ive evet had. My Boyfriend wanted to take the food back and have words but i persuaded him to leave it but this review had to be done.

We have ordered home delivery throughout lockdown. They arrive really quickly. Piping hot and taste great.

My girlfriend and I fancied fish and chips on the evening of Monday 25th May 2020 and we were pleased to find THE CODFATHER in Andrew Street (Bury St Edmunds) open so we decided to try their food for the first tine,what a BIG mistake,please read on.There were 4 people waiting outside for their orders and I went inside,I ordered 2 sausages&chips twice and I was just about to pay and the Manager (not serving us)standing nearby started waving his arms and in a rude manner/voice beckoned me outside and told me to pay when my order was ready.To be honest,I nearly walked away but i was hungry and decided to wait,wish I hadn't bothered.Admittedly they were sorting out orders for deliveroo but I could see a large pile of sausages ready and it was 30 mins before they called me in for my order.It was wrapped up and told me my order was £11.20 which was wrong,I pointed at their food price board and said in a calm voice that my order should be £8.40,although the Manager was not serving me ,he started to have a go at me ,waving his arms again,saying I had not asked for small sausages,I replied saying that I had not asked for jumbo sausages and pointed at the board where the standard sausages were listed which did not say small,this Manager was very aggressive and rude to me,saying I was wrong even though i 100% wasn't.After the member of staff begrudgingly open the order and changed the sausages to what I had ordered,I pointed at they guy serving me and said in a calm voice,good service and then I looked and pointed at the Manager and said bad service,he said something in a raised voice but didn't hear what he said as his English was poorly spoken.My girlfriend and I then took a 3 min journey to the Abbey Gardens to eat our meal.The food was only warm and the sausages tasted horrible and looked like they had been cooked for hours(if they were open lunchtime,they must have reheated the sausages and used them for the evening) and the chips had a very unpleasant taste so we both covered them in tomato sauce to take away the bad taste,we both only ate less than half our meals and it left a bad aftertaste in our mouths.I treat staff with respect who are working at eateries/takeaways but it should work both ways and this Manager treated me with total disrespect,was very rude and aggressive towards me and clearly doesn't have any people skills.You will by my previous reviews that I have often given high praise to eating places but if I get poor food with rude service,I will leave a deserved bad review and on this occasion,THE CODFATHER deserved this review,we both said they were the worst fish and chips we had ever eaten.

We tried several but always return here for freshly cooked fish and delicious chips. Not greasy, cooked in clean oil and never soggy!! Good generous portions and reasonably priced. I Love my Fridays!!

Value for money,big portions,friendly staff,had takeaway but you can also eat in at this venue,very close to bury st Edmunds town centre & bus station,nice place to go if you're in a hurry,quick service

The establishment has served excellent fish 'n' chips for many years, and has never disappointed me. Except the time when I didn't realise it had shut for the evening, but my fault I think. All food served is delicious, and I always have trouble making a choice what to eat when I get in there. Then I change my mind, as everything always looks so tempting. But the taste is as good as the looks. The staff are knowledgeable, polite, and friendly, and fairly quick, considering most orders have to be cooked to order.

we were shopping in Bury St Edmunds and decided to have lunch...and we wanted fish and chips... wow this little place is a gem they cook your fish and chips fresh I had a medium rock hubby had cod and we shared chips between us... absolutely great tasting fish nice and hot crispy batter and no grease... plenty of chips.. you can also get a cup of tea for £1.. they have one table inside and a couple of benches outside.. place looked clean.. staff were good.
