Very nice lovely bar serving up authentic Sri Lankan food. Some beers where not available when we visited which was a shame as I would've liked a Sri Lankan beer. Food is good and has plenty of flavours, portion sizes are good, we were advised to order 3 dishes each bit that was too much food for me. Staff are friendly and polite

First, but not last, visit to the coconut tree. Absolutely DELICIOUS food. So much gluten free gorgeousness. Try the cashew nut curry, it's sublime. Thank you to Waylon for running across the road with my coat 😍 will definitely be back, thank you. The musician was brilliant too!

A welcoming and spacious Sri Lankan themed restaurant which is good value and caters for gluten free and vegan diets. The staff were welcoming and my friend enjoyed his peppered pork coconut curry while I enjoyed a mix of vegan fried rice with veggies and chilli, juicy beetroot baduma and succulent coconut sambol (since I didn’t feel like a rich, creamy meal which you could also have, maybe next time) all washed down with Tiger Beer (Red Stripe also available). I would definitely return here.

Fantastic food and amazing atmosphere. We hadn’t reserved a table and despite being busy they went out of their way to get us a table. Great vibe and music. Good options for the food, everything we had tasted great.

Foot excellent derive excellent but you shouldn’t operate without a separate male female toilet . I used a shared toiled and I was honestly uncomfortable

Some of the best food and certainly by far the best value of any restaurant I visited, there is a great variety of interesting food and drink in a charming atmosphere with excellent service. Definitely start with a coconut crêpe "hopper" for yourself, with the egg and condiments on top you will not want to share. Be open to adventure, most of the dishes I had not heard of, and there are quirks like the sticky rice being served ground in a cube, rather than as individual grains. But you'll be richly rewarded, the kottu in particular has a swirl of textures, flavors, and spice. The fried chili paste is spectacular, if you can handle some additional heat above the already decently chili-laden food. And the cocktails put most "craft" cocktails to shame. Showing off the best of tropical fruit and interesting contrasts of tart and sweet, they're also very reasonably priced, especially if you get a pair. Wow!

Loved the food had been longing for hoppers for long now. Everyrhing we ordered was just delicious and the staff were really sweet and helpful. Good cocktails as well. Portions are small but not going to complain since we were stuffed ! Music selection too was nice while we were there. Its expensive we paid quite a lot for 2 people.

Having been to Sri Lanka I would say that the food we had was pretty much spot on for the real thing. It scratched that itch we had for Sri Lankan food. Whilst it's not cheap, not like Sri Lanka itself, it's not overly expensive either. If you get between 3 - 4 dishes each, you will have more than enough food and, with a drink or two, you're looking at spending around £35 - £40 each. The staff were friendly & helpful without being too in your face. The music was at the right level. We went really early in the evening, 17:30, so it was quiet but it will starting to fill up by the time we left (and that was a Tuesday evening). We liked the enjoy the food, and the ambience so we'll definitely come back.

Amazing atmosphere and service. Was let down a bit with the cocktails as there wasn't enuf liquor in them and was too sweet. Food was good but there definitely can be some more improvement. Since we are veg and we had only starters we felt there could be some more spice added(or could be asked to the customers if needed) also the spices felt a bit burnt while preparing the potatoes. It was good but not great. Just had another meal today and this is my feedback. The service was as average today. Got plates that had their skin peeled off and wasn't keen on eating on them but continued to do so. Would suggest that the staff look into them. Food wise the pumpkin dish(fat sister) had the skin on and that made it a bit unappetizing and some people can't digest the skin so would suggest to look into it. The other items like the 5c, chickpeas were wonderful as usual. The basmati rice was ok. The raspberry mojito(virgin) was ok too.

A Sri Lankan restaurant in Reading town centre, most of the dishes were delicious especially the prawn fried rice, prawn gravy, chicken wings and the chilli chutney they gave on the house. The hoppers were not that great, it was a bit of disappointment. The jackfruit kothu only had lots of vegetables, and I wasn't able to enjoy it much. The prices were expensive for the portion they served. The portions were a small amount and was not enough to share between two people. The tables were available when we went but it's better to check before you arrive.

The service wasn’t very good barring one member of staff (With nose ring). Our food order was Delayed, I’m sure it was forgotten as they had to ask us again what we had ordered. Once arrived the chicken curry was very watery and the paratha was cold. Would not recommend.

A Sri Lankan cuisine restaurant. Good place if you wish to try out South Asian dishes and something different from usual. Ambience is good. Food and cocktails are average. Only concern I would have is with the portion sizes.

Went here with some friends and the food was so good. I had the vegan kotthu. We also ordered the Dahl chickpeas and kale and radish sambol. It was absolutely delicious and all of these dishes were vegan as well. I also had the flaming cinnamon and citrus drink. Which they literally set on fire! The staff were so lovely and did a great job

Today was our first visit to The Coconut Tree, wow! The food was delicious and cooked freshly in the open style kitchen just feet away from us. We chose the "I can't decide" menu option as we couldn't decide...it all looked fantastic. We were not disappointed, our server asked us for some picks and she chose the rest for us. Every single dish hit the spot. Goat curry, blackened pork, calamari. It was all amazing. The whole vibe of the restaurant was great, would highly recommend anyone who likes or would like to try Sri Lankan food to go here. We will be returning once my food coma ends!

This is my 3rd time here, and I can’t be more happy to have this lovely and delicious restaurant in Reading , a friend recommended it to me and now is my favourite Sri Lankan restaurant. This restaurant is like a Spanish tapas bar , so you chose your favourite dishes and have little bits of everything, I have so far tasted all dishes and I can’t get over it! Cocktails feels like they are soft and fresh but after few minutes they kick your a$$ 🤣 They are absolutely delicious too! Plus music is just so cool!! 100%

Excellent food. We ordered 3-4 dishes each, all of which were very flavoursome (be careful how spicy you ask it to be). Very reasonably priced too. Highly recommend, will definitely be going back.

Great authentic Sri Lankan restaurant.

I rarely give negative reviews, but this restaurant left me with no choice. The portions were disappointingly small, especially considering the £10 price for kothu porottas. Taste-wise, it didn't live up to expectations. The seating was equally subpar – uncomfortable benches with no back support and cushions that constantly slipped. Despite booking in advance, our sunny window seat turned into a headache due to the lack of blinds. Either the food, service, or seating should excel, but unfortunately, none did. On a positive note, our waiter provided good service amidst the overall letdown.

Maybe just… don’t go on a Monday! This came recommended. And as I was in Reading and needed a spot for lunch, I gave it a try. The staff were friendly and welcoming. They were also wearing coats - the place was freezing. We were one of only two tables (someone else came in, but left when finding it was card payments only) - and were sat on adjacent tables. We tried the lunch menu, to sample a range of options. The hoppers were tasty but fridge cold (although could have just been the room temperature!). The Pandan rice had no flavour, and was hard and clumped - not the fragrant fluffy side expected. The pumpkin in the curry (or perhaps butternut squash?) was cooked in large chunks with the hard rind left on, making it hard to cut / manoeuvre in the little dishes. Some things were delicious - including the sambals and iced teas. But if you fail on rice - it’s a no from me.

Great bar with with fantastic food, brilliant staff that are extremely friendly and make you feel welcome. Highly recommended Find Dinesh is king of this place.

Disappointing food. Ordered 4-5 veg dishes, didn't like any. Food was not seasoned well and wasn't at all packed with flavours. If you are a vegetarian, you could easily skip this one. I can't say about the non veg food though

This bustling restaurant may require reservations. The standout Sriki Tiki drink features a flaming sugar cube with cinnamon. The lamb cutlet is crispy and spicy, with an unusual but tasty sauce. Avoid the salty, paste-like 'stinky rice'. The chicken curry is very spicy and different from Indian curry, while the shrimp curry is excellent. Friendly service, although they forgot one dish.

Really Great ...!!! Delicious food. And friendly staff. If you go in 2nd time, you can get some discount. Price also reasonable. You can ask for extreme spicy if you really like to taste it. I am recommend to have chicken gravy with Koththu for best taste.. 👍👍👍

Never fails to disappoint. A good selection of tasty well-cooked food (goat curry is superb, and off the bone) and drinks including draught beer. Friendly and patient waiting staff. Toilets also in good clean order (which is a good marker for the general hygiene of a place). Music not too intrusive either. A great place for mates, dates or work meets

It was my first time eating Sri Lankan and it was completely different to what I’ve eaten before. Great costumer service, we were specifically served by Chetan. Definitely worth it to try!

The food was a lot spicier than the menu suggested. Lightly spiced Sri-tatoes were like fireballs. And the bone on chicken was literally one drumstick in a hot curry sauce for £7 so a bit of a rip off and quite insulting to serve. For £59 for two people, your better off ordering a good Chinese or Indian for half that and it will taste better!

Great food and especially good service. Our waiter, Chethan, explained how the menu worked and recommended cocktails and checked that we were happy with things as we went through the courses.

This place is a gem of a restaurant in Reading. I really loved the variety of dishes on offer and everything I ate here was super tasty. The cashew curry and Sri Lankan cake dessert were highlights for me. I hadn’t tried Sri Lankan food before coming here but I am definitely going to visit this place again in the future!

The atmosphere, ambience, and service were decent, but not extraordinary. However, the food was a complete disappointment. We had a variety of dishes, including Beef Kothu Roti, Prawns Fried Rice, Fried Calamari, and Chicken Curry with paratha. I must say that the portion sizes for the Kothu and fried rice were inadequate considering the price. Moreover, they lacked flavor. The chicken curry turned out to be excessively spicy, oily, and devoid of any distinct taste. It felt as if I was dipping my dry paratha into a pool of chili-infused oil with some chicken in it. This restaurant really needs to make significant improvements in the quality of their food.

Went in with friends. Service was great. We ordered a large variety of dishes. Cocktails were superb. Food was good only dishes that wasn’t great is the kuthu roti. Sorry we didn’t enjoy that. Also the chicken wings was a bit tough. Needed more cooking time. Other than that the whole experience was great.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER AT A RESTAURANT! UPDATE - 4 Days have passed, sent 2 emails to the response they put and still nothing back. If you are going to ask for contact atleast have the common decency to acknowledge it! REVIEW: I would caution anyone to think twice before paying patronage to this establishment. We arrived at 7 and were seated in a space that was reserved for 8pm and made aware of this, we were happy to have a drink, eat and move on, after having an amazing experience at the Oxford branch a while back. It all got off to a flying start, cocktails arrived, not quite to the same level as before but we let it go. We were then ignored until 7:30, until we hailed a server over to take our order knowing we were pressed for time. Our food finally arrived at 19:50. We had barely started to eat when the large table started to arrive and the manager who seated us, who had all but disappeared until now, came over and told us we needed be done in 5 mins. We objected and told him the food had just arrived, at the fault of them not taking our order on time, and we all agreed we would be 15 mins - nothing like a rushed meal. We tucked back in but felt the pressure. 2 mins later the same manager returned and wanted us to move tables mid meal, we objected as we had agreed to 15 mins. It was now just before 8pm. Not even 2 mins later we overheard the ‘larger table’ complaining about not having the table and heard the server say, rather snidely, we had been told that we needed to finish and vacate. I approached the manager and told him we were leaving as we had been interrupted now 3 times and felt very uncomfortable. We left our food and drinks and started to walk to the door and were threatened that the police would be called if we didn’t pay the bill for the half eaten meal, as they started moving our plates to another table, which we had not agreed to. Our friend forgot his phone on the table due to the stress, which a member of the public very kindly handed back. The manager then proceeded to gaslight us telling us that it was our fault for not ordering on time. It was all our fault ‘you did this, you did that.’ Then, in whatever attempt to turn things around, they offered to put us in the corner, bring us shots to try make up for this heinous experience. We felt so sick and harassed by the manager and his colleague that we had to leave. We paid the bill for the half consumed drinks and left. Not a single apology from the manager for his mistake, no ounce of remorse for the horrible dealing of the situation. Since when did we become a culture in hospitality where the customer is ALWAYS WRONG! If this is the type of toxic behaviour displayed to paying patrons, one can only imagine the level of toxicity to staff.

Popped in for a light bite for lunch and cannot explain how good the food is went with house recommendations of the hoppers and Jaffna curry was amazing cannot explain how good the food is need to try to know how good it is, amazing service from the team thank you for the great food and service. One of my favourite restaurants in Reading

Lovely experience dining at The Coconut Tree in Reading. Everything from the food, the drinks and the staff was fantastic. Our servers Csenge and Samitha especially went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. They patiently explained the menu to us and suggested dishes to try. The food was warming and delicious especially the prawns and mushrooms which were the highlight for me. We enjoyed our meal and will definitely be returning again.

Really good food, although a bit spicy for me. First time I went service was not great, but the second time it was excellent.

I ordered Uber, “simple Sri Lankan” and salad. Soup was nice, salad as well and most of all, I really enjoyed the main dish. Thank you.

This is not authentic Sri Lankan food, and the way they advertise it as such feels dishonest and misinformmative. The food lacks flavour, the portions are tiny and overpriced, and the ingredients are wrong. Where in Colombo would you ever find sweet chilli cheese cubes? And yet it’s advertised as a Colombo staple, which seems disingenuous. Stir fried chickpeas, polenta battered mushrooms, beef brisket fried rice, calling this Sri Lankan or even Sri Lankan inspired is just bizarre.

Was really surprised by how good the food was! I'm snobbish about chains, but the kitchen in Reading was staffed by Sri Lankans, and as soon as you walk in you can smell it's going to be delicious. We loved everything we ordered, especially the calamari and the beef brisket kottu, and I'd happily go back to try the rest of the menu. Service was excellent, warm and friendly. Good value, and they have an express lunch menu and a thali-type "tell me what to order" option at £25 (20 for veg/vegan).

Food could have been spicier and black pork was a bit tough. Nice flavours but a bit pricey!

Great food that's incredibly well priced. We got a bunch of the tapas style dishes, two mains and some cocktails and only spent £50. First time visit but will definitely be a regular from now on!

Great place for cocktails and meal. The menu is quite different and interesting. The portions appear small but they are really filling and great for sharing too.

I like spicy food and it was delicious. I especially liked the roti. One of my party asked for their food to be reheated as it was not hot enough and the manager was very apologetic and attentive, so we were very happy with the service. It would have been nice if all the food had arrived at the same time but it was more "street food" style. Also the music was a bit loud for me. I would definitely eat there again as the food was so tasty.

I went to Coconut Tree for the second time last month and was not disappointed! The food was super tasty and the martinis were so good. We even got to make out our hopper- show to us by one of the servers. Great customer service and music! I will defo be coming again!!

What a beautiful surprise in Reading! We ordered a set menu for 2 and it was delicious. We would definitely order again and again from this place.

This place should be absolutely heaving! If you like Asian food, Indian food, African food, this is the place. Its sort of like a tapas sharing kinda thing, with something for all tastes (vegans too). Tasty, fresh and prompt. Took my adult son there on a Sunday afternoon and we both thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Check out the menu as I don't want to miss anything by only telling you what we had. Service was attentive, friendly and spot on too.

Not had Sri Lankan food before. The general experience was great. Food was lovely but probably not my sort of thing. However that was more my personal preference to other styles of food such as Thai. Loved the eat all you want for £25 and our son ate for £12.50, whilst our daughter was free. For a family of 4 it was £62.50. We had ordered food and drink at more than double our bill so was a bargain! Spice up your life and give it a go.

First visit was interesting ! food was not what I expected but in a good way, although freshly cooked was luke warm but maybe that's how it should be as not experienced Sri Lankan food before. Service was good, everything explained but it wasn't very busy albeit a bank holiday. Music was good but lack of atmosphere because only 4 groups of customers .
