Went for Sunday roast. Asked for turkey but it wasn’t carved off the bone like all the places we have been too. Instead it looked like processed meat on a roll. I was cut 2 very thin slices but that was ok as it was so bland and tasteless that I left it. The rest of dinner was ok except for rubbery parsnips, they were not crisp or roasted at all/ much. The desert was very nice. It’s a lovely pub in a pretty town ( thought it was a village but it seems Clare is a small town) We would go back for drinks in the garden as that was pleasant but not for Sunday dinner.

We enjoyed a delicious Sunday Roast. The beef & turkey were beautifully cooked & the range of vegetables was wonderful. My husband is a coeliac & the offer of gluten free cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings & gravy were made especially for him. This was such a treat for him & thank you so much for providing him with these gluten free items. It made such a difference to us as he doesn’t usually receive such care & attention. Thank you so much.

We booked a table at this pub for 4 people for 12.30 on Valentine’s Day. When we arrived the pub was in darkness with the doors locked. 2 hours later it was still in darkness. They would have expected us to inform them if we needed to cancel our booking and in the same way I would have expected them to inform me that they could not honour our booking. Won’t be going there again

We turned up very hungry and tired after getting lost on a walk. It was late for lunch on a Saturday, but the bar man couldn’t have been more helpful. He turned a blind eye to our muddy boots and took the trouble to put a group of tables together for us. He took a drinks order at the table, and brought them over to us to save our tired feet. Our food order was rather slow to arrive, but given the time and the number of us, hardly surprising. Not everyone in the party was as happy as I was with the quality of their food but my gammon, egg and chips really hit the spot after our long walk.

Unfortunately our Christmas dinner was a sad timeit was very late ,one and a half hours and disappointing. We’ve previously had some really good meals here and enjoy the pub. This was average, served chilly on cold plates. This is a special time with family all home, I work in emergency theatre and was so looking forward to a lovely family meal.We felt in the way waiting for absolutely ages, our table was also ‘in the way’ the waitress was sweet, had to climb over a balustrade to get round?! We made the best of it, but I feel so sorry and felt very sad and disappointed for my family. Olivia is pregnant and sent her rare steak back three times, it feels horrible to ask as I can imagine how stressful catering for a large amount of people is.The Buck’s Fizz was nice and the warm sausage rolls. The wait was crazy long, felt uncomfortable, waiting in the pool room with other people also waiting.I cannot honestly recommend such an incredibly important meal here. I’m very disappointed ☹️

We took advantage of the Thursday special with the Steak menu and were delighted! A very friendly meet and greet from Karen and led to a table for two by the roaring log burner in a nicely themed environment featuring original artworks and murals on the walls. We ordered the thursday special, steak and wine. Excellent in all respects. Two perfectly cooked steaks to order, fries, coleslaw and red wine. Two excelllent desserts followed with a personal greeting from the owner Nicole. We could not have been welcomed more! Our new regular venue from now on. Well done everyone at the Cock Inn bringing style and value into Clare.

A group of nine of us had lunch after a pleasant but muddy walk around Clare and Cavendish. Naturally we took our boots off before we went in. We were greeted by a very cheerful young lady who was very attentive throughout the meal making sure all was ok and the drinks kept flowing. It was pie day and 8 of us opted for the pies. She was not phased at all by group members changing their minds or by requested variations to the vegetable requirements. The food was good honest pub grub. No pretensions just delicious. I for one will certainly be going back.

We went to the Cock (pre-booked) for Sunday lunch. The welcome was warm and attentive and the service kept up this good standard throughout. The menu choice was a little limited - 4 out of the 5 of us had Sunday roasts and 1 had fish. The portions for the roasts were barely adequate - the bowl of vegetables for 5 of us was very small and the fish portion was bordering on minute. But the main issue for two of us was that the food was not served hot enough. Mind you, the cheesecake dessert was delicious.

Nice pub atmosphere and reasonable food prices. However, being vegetarian there was only one option available on the whole menu, even with the Sunday roast options. Would have ordered a roast as they looked delicious but no veggie option available. Unfortunately service was slow and my mushroom pasta was boring and heavy. Would come back but there being no other vegetarian option unlikely. Is a shame as a veggie roast would have been amazing or another option.

I was shown a suitable menu and booked a table for five on Wednesday, we arrived and asked for the menu. They took our orders for drinks first, but I said I would like to see the menu. They then gave us a SUNDAY menu which was mostly roasts and after Christmas everyone had enough of roast dinners. This was my second visit to the pub with friends; we had enjoyed the first visit. The pub is a nice place with a bright interior and a pleasant garden. We were a group of six and were accommodated immediately within the bar area and our drinks order was taken straight away. Once our meals had been ordered they were served without undue delay. My meal was stuffed chicken breast with stilton. This was quite a small portion in my opinion and there was little stilton taste. A sauce served with in was quite thin and also with little taste. Overall I fell that the price of the dish was a little bit high. Three others in our party had the 'pie of the day' which was steak and ale pie. They commented that this was more like a vol au vent with some additional meat rather than a pie. The desserts available did not tempt us so I cannot comment on those.

Clare is a picture postcard village where parking is difficult and which attracts many "crockles".It is a pleasant drive in the Suffolk Countryside and traditionally I have merely stopped off and then gone on to other places. On this sunny day I decided to grab a quick lunch and was very pleasantly surprised by the Cock Inn.It has a large garden to the rear with lots of seating and to amuse the children there are chickens at the back of the garden including, one must assume, A Cock?I chose the Chef's Fishcakes which I must say were exceptional washed down with a beer from what was a decent choice of ales.Service was very good although there were a small number of customers as it was comparatively late on a midweek lunchtime.Based upon this evidence I will certainly "stop off" at the cock more frequently and would encourage others to do so.

We were meeting some friends for lunch so decided to try the Cock as our friends had not been there before. The menu was not vast but there was something to suit us all. My friend and I had sausage and mash with onion gravy and root vegetables. The sausages I am guessing were local and were very tasty. Looked beautiful on the plate. My husband opted for a rack of ribs and he said they were the best he had tasted in a long time. Served with chips and loads of onion rings he said it was delicious. Our friend chose steak and onion pie and this was obviously home made with great chunks of meat and a puff pastry case. I couldn't manage dessert but the others had syrup sponge pudding with custard and one had a hot chocolate fondant with ice cream. I must say the presentation of the food was superb. There was only one waitress on duty but as there was only one other table in at the time she managed to serve our food without any unnecessary waiting. The chef has to be commended on the food and will definitely go there again.

I visited the Cock Inn with my wife and two friends two years ago and looked forward to visiting it again. All four of us went again with another couple but found that in the meantime however the pub has changed hands. It's wrong to say that we were disappointed; just that it was good but not quite as good. Everything about the place is nice, e.g. decor, service etc., but I (and the others) found the choices on the menu less tempting. The food we chose was good, hot and served promptly but I struggled to find anything I really wanted. In the end I had the prawn and crayfish salad (ok) followed by beef and blue cheese lasagne which was nice but I couldn't detect the blue cheese. My wife had a cheese and onion tart (ok) then rump steak which was very nice.None if us were tempted by the desserts (which is my favourite course) so we paid and left. The price of about £33 without drinks for the two of us was acceptable but perhaps the expectation meant that a good meal was enjoyed less that it might have been.

After reading some of the reviews I can not understand their problem!! Some people expect such a lot, the refurbishment is lovely, everywhere clean & I've never had a problem with the food, excellent, well worth a visit

After a long day out with friends it was decided we should all to go for a meal at The Cock as a finale to the day. After drinks in the garden we sat down and after a short wait our orders were taken. There was 11 of us in total and the order was something like: 2 chicken breasts, 2 burgers (1 with cheese) 2 steak, 1 pie, 1 lamb chops, 1 fish-cakes, 1 gammon steak, 1 fish of the day. All the food arrived in good time and everyone appeared to enjoy it, however I have to say that that the only bad comments were, 'could've more more cheese on the burger. Obviously a connoisseur of burgers there. I have to say theta while all plates were more or less emptied had it just been my wife and I our food would have gone straight back to the kitchen. I had the gammon. Where to start- the peas were cold only being heat up by the proximity to the chips which while exceedingly hot were also exceedingly oily, no make that saturated beyond belief with cooking oil. The fried eggs were over done and rubbery and the gammon overcooked to the point of being tough and chewy. My wife's burger was acceptable being plain but the chips were like mine swimming in oil. As I say had we not been in company and the English dislike for making a fuss in such circumstances that food would have been condemned to the bin. Unlucky?, I guess so, the chicken breasts you could cut through with just a fork and the steak am I told exceptionally good. So is it just me being picky, I don't think so. You tend to remember poor food like that and it will be a long time before I venture into the Cock for a meal. Improvement is definitely needed.

Perhaps not the best pub food I've ever had and a menu with no surprises but a warm welcome in this extensively refurbished pub made for a real axing and thoroughly enjoyable lunch. I was impressed by the covered garden area which created a pleasant outdoor place to enjoy a summers day particularly for those who enjoy a smoke! The unusual fruit ciders were excellent. The barbecue serving burgers and sausages in a bun was an interesting facility for those wanting a light snack and a pint! Can't wait to go back!!

Once again another lovely meal. Roast chicken with lots of flavour, cooked well and lots of it. Crispy roast potatoes. Great having such a good local with a variety of real ales, which change regularly, friendly staff. Large garden with plenty of seating. Beer festival from Thursday 11 -14 August with live music on Saturday 13th. Well worth a visit.

On the way north to Bury St Edmund stopped off in Clare at the Cock Inn for lunch and pleased that we did. It is a 15th century country inn serving good food and real ales in very pleasant surroundings and we were made to feel most welcome. Parking is easy in the square at the front. An enjoyable experience.

Dealing with the food first - it was ok, nothing to get too excited about nothing wrong with it either. But the service was amazingly rude - the one waiter had no idea about what was on the menu, shrugged as he failed to remember so we found out ourselves, he kept stretching across our table of 4, knocking the table and pushing it across the room, didn't want to come round and collect plates/clear he expected us to pick up them ourselves and pass them to him whilst he stood at one end - access wasn't actually a problem around the table so we concluded he just couldn't be bothered to walk the extra 3 feet. His whole attitude and service was straight out of the Basil Fawlty school of catering. Worth going back just to see if he can get any worse which may be a challenge as he has set the bar so high already!!

Buzzy friendly atmosphere with good attentive staff but the real surprise was the standard of its cuisine compared with previous visit. My sirloin was cooked to perfection and tasted good as were the other dishes chosen. Will be my local choice for food in future.

We dined here on Sunday as we dropped in whilst passing. Beautiful sunny day, sat in the garden and enjoyed lovely roast dinners with cold cider. Really delicious food. Only would suggest that during or after our meals we were not offered any more drinks or food as I think we would have all jumped at it but we were outside so this may be why. Either way would definitely return :)

My family and I returned to the cock for a second visit and once again weren't dissapointed. Great food, friendly welcome and atmosphere and clean. The children's meals were lovely and good portions and the lemon sole my father had looked, and he said was delicious as was our fish and chips.Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.Well done to Ben and his team. The pub was busy and looking at other people's meals' as they were handed out looked equally yummy.

I visited Clare at the weekend in order to attend a piano recital in Clare Church. The Cock is immaculate, with an easily accessible bar and welcoming staff. Being a vegetarian, I was delighted to find the delicious Mushroom Strogonoff. I would definitely visit again, when next I go to Clare.

Having eaten at the refurbished Cock for the second time yesterday, I have to say that on neither occasion was I impressed with the vegetarian option. Quite apart from the very limited choice (one main) they seem to think that because you don't eat meat you are also on a diet. Whereas on both occasions my companions' meals looked fine, filling and were reportedly quite tasty, mine was bland, uninspired and not substantial enough, the plate being filled with a bit of greenery to make it appear bigger than it was. Very disappointing, especially as more and more people wish to make meat and fish-free choices.

Having driven past this pub a few times and liked what we saw and being keen to try Nethergate Ales we popped in one Sunday for a late lunch. Was disappointed to not see any nice sandwiches on the menu, as that's what I really fancied, but that's OK I thought I would have scampi and chips - good old pub classic, as having just returned to the UK after 5 years in Singapore its what UK pub's do best - right? Wrong! My food was dreadful. I got the impression that the kitchen had started closing down for the day (it was around 14:30-15:00) and on receiving my order they flipped the switch back on the fryer, but didn't wait for the oil to heat up and just dropped the chips and scampi into the luke warm oil. When brought to the table they were so mushy and oily it was terrible and so disappointing as the pub looks great, the staff were efficient and the beer really good, plus teh price was towards the high end so i expected better. I am sure that the owner would be disappointed with what came out, as I hope would the chef. I rather foolishly ate everything and didn't complain (I am just too British) and felt ill all afternoon and was so disappointed that pub food in the UK could still be so bad, their was no love or care put into my meal at all. I had spent the last 5 years signing the virtues of pub food, cheap and generally good (not like Singapore where is super expensive and mediocre). So, having said all that, would I go again? - yes probably as I cant believe all the food at the Cock Inn is that bad (my wife's cold chicken pate was great) and it must have been an off day or just a time when the chef wanted to be at home. I'll give them another chance - but next time if the food is as bad I'll complain and I suggest you do also if it happens to you.

The usual "spoons" standard Food and drinks were all good value Service was great the bar are serving staff were happy to help Sadly there was some form of issue that there was an excessive amount of little black fly's. We relocated to another part of the bar, the following evening the fly infested area was closed off.
