Great pub. Friendly staff and good music.

This is my favourite pub in Hackney Central. A great beer selection, sensible prices and a friendly welcome.

They need to go to Argos to invest in a 72in tv to fit snuggly above the door in replace of the tiny tv they have atm. Watching the football was not the best experience on such a small screen 😂

Has to be one of my Top 5 boozers in London! Little or no food, a huge selection of real ales and ciders, and great service. A calm oasis on the crazy noisy mayhem of Mare Street. Great prices, too - less than a fiver for a great local ale. You'll never have a bad pint in here! 👍

Literally the worst pub I've ever been in. Shabby yes chic definitely no. Awful dark gloomy bloke pub with pointless music, poor selection of drinks & only one tiny grubby toilet for women.

Have not visited this pub. However, would like to express my gratitude towards staff who kindly left some drinks and snacks on the front of the ambulance today 🙏 thank you they went down a treat :)

Fantastic pub, no kitchen but the eggs slap!

Good range of cask and craft beers and lively chat from locals in there but did feel scruffier than usual and probably needed a good airing to set the bodily odours free onto the streets of Hackney. Would still return for the beer pre gig in the area to check out the offerings though.

Decent pub and very good range of beers. However the young women who works there spends too much time on her social life rather than working.

Nice pub but keep your bag close because the pub has frequent visitors who arrive looking for bags to steal…

Great local pub with a large bar. It has a bunch of beers and ales on tap + loads of ciders. Good place to meet people, definitely recommend stopping by for a pint

This is a real gem for those who like an authentic pub. It is cosy and the stools along the bar which have disappeared in most places give this an old-school feel. The staff were friendly and helpful and the pub had a nice bustling feel. It serves a good selection of ales and IPA on handpumps, with a good selection of canned beers & wines. Some nice touches are Bovril for £2 and an assortment pickled eggs, I'd recommend the marmite & balsamic flavours (see photo). All in all, this is the antithesis of the industrial gastropub and feels a little like stepping back in time 😊

I can't believe I've never reviewed this pub. I love it. Amazing, rotating selection of beers and ciders. Great bar staff. A cosy, well used, not pretensious in any way, community pub, without the cheap Carling or annoying TV sports. You know it's a good pub when the owner of one of the other great local pubs is often in there. Food choices are pickled eggs, peanuts and a large selection of crisps. Or Yard Sale pizza delivered to the door. Or the chippy round the corner. Gluten free beers, sometimes on tap, always in cans. Plus more cask ciders than you can shake a stick at.

Potentially great place, big, empty at 12, loads a good beers ...BUT doesn't brew it's own any more. Tragedy! No food at lunch but allows you to bring in some Banh Mi baps from round the corner....which was nice!

A Hackney institution with a great selection of beers. Saw on an old map that there has been a tavern on this site for over a hundred years which is cool 🐓

An excellent pub. I like the nod to what is probably the smallest beer 'garden' in East London.

Sister pub to the very good Southampton Arms. On this visit the pub was fairly quiet with most of the punters hogging the bar. The condition of the beers was good.

Excellent cask and keg options, along with 6 ciders on handpull. Craft offerings but in a proper pub, just like we need. Always nice to find a place where the staff seem to be as happy as the customers to be there.

Awful place it felt dirty and unkept. More people coming in to use the toilet than drinking. The toilets were interesting. Only takes card payments which is not really acceptable. Not a place I would recommand or revisit.

Fantastic beer and cider selection, could have stayed in here all day drinking my way through everything! Service was really friendly and other patrons were nice too. An absolute gem of a pub.

After ordering 4 drinks, we were just finishing our tap waters when we were asked to leave as ‘it was a Saturday night and he couldn’t have us just drinking water’. We were just having a break from buying drinks, but after this rudeness, we of course left. Not a great way to treat customers and a shame as the pub has an unusually good selection of real ciders.

Brilliant city pub for beer. Great cask range in perfect condition. Best place to drink Howling Hops. Cracking keg stuff too. Visit was first time back since pre pandemic and glad to see it hasn't changed at all!

When it comes to independent pubs proudly serving independent brews the relationship between the customer and the landlord/bar staff I expect is pretty much the same of the trust bond I'd expect between the customer and the independent record shop owner. If I walk in and ask for a recommendation, I'm not expecting reverence but at least respect. After asking for a stout and being told they had many, I kindly asked what the staff would recommend and went for it. The bill was over £12 for a pint. When, left perplexed by the bill, I double checked the correctness of the price with another member of the staff I was welcomed by perplexity. That was a 13% beer, that's like ordering a pint of wine, so of course it was pricey. That was his nonchalant explanation. Fair play. As long as you inform your *new* customers on the slightly off the average price rate of your brews, it's all legitimate. However, when asked for a recommendation by a new client, transparency should be up front. Inform them of the above-average price of the pint so that they'll be able to consider whether to buy it or choose a cheaper option, especially if they are students. Otherwise, it's not surprising if the whole population turns to Spoons.

Cosy little pub on Mare Street with one of the best beer and cider selections in the area. Had forgotten all about it until recently. Cask ale is reasonably priced. Pickled egg challenge for the brave. I failed miserably on a previous visit. Hats off to those on the leaderboard. Good tunes on not too loud. Great stuff.

Nice boozer with good selection of beers but limited selection of two gins. Staff lovely and good music! One star taken off as no cash accepted. London seems further down the slippery slope of digital currency than the rest of the country...

Decent Tavern with plenty of choice for beers and a vanilla stout which is super delicious! If you are looking for a decent pint and proper pub vibe then here is your place, plus it has a fun name and its always a giggle saying you have been there! :)

Excellent Victorian Pub in the Heart of Hackney. A Real Ale and Real Cider drinker's paradise. Has Eight Real Ales. Eight Real Ciders and Eight Craft Beers on Tap. The Staff are very helpful when are was asking questions about the Ales. Well worth a visit on a Hackney pub crawl.

Proper boozer with great cask and keg beer (some but not all from affiliated Howling Hops), pickled eggs, and "interesting" toilets. Update Dec 2021: previous manager did a good job of ventilating the place, new manager has a sign up saying "It's cold outside, keep door closed". Decide for yourself if this is pro or con.

Very good Hackney pub at the top of Mare Street. 6 cask beers - and 7 ciders - on tap when I visited. Unusually, the beers included two dark beers - a stout and a mild. The pub only offers bar snacks but outside food is welcome.

A nice bar with a good selection of beers on the taps. Great place to stop by after a show at the theatre next door. I was surprised we get to take our pint glasses and sit outside, on the pavement. But hey, I’m not complaining!

Solid no nonsense pub, always has an excellent selection of beers. Even better now they have ditched their cash only policy and accept card payments.

Just had the one half each in here and were charged for pints, so £11:00 for our 2 halves of cider!! The lady that served us was pleasant enough. One part of the wooden floor was wearing away and the ladies' toilet was disgusting. We finished our drinks, left and will not be returning. Not recommended.

A dark old boozer with a dozen or so handpumps (beware loads of them have cider). Dark wood panelling, wooden floor and a black/maroon ceiling should make it popular with a goth crowd! I had a Chorlton Pale(?) not in the best nick tbh, a few days past its best.

Really good, reasonably priced and genuinely beautiful inside. It cost us 10 quid for a double maker's mark and a good pint. Not bad for London

In a stripped back place like this a feel of decay & closure takes some effort to effect. Aroma of toilet freshener pervaded the bar, the usual perfunctory service more insouciant than usual. Languid country rock. Much theatrical clattering of furniture, cling film round beer taps & ringing of bells. This is super happening Hackney - 10pm is bedy byes.
