The Cock Inn in South Norfolk

Great pub with excellent staff friendly locals and in a great location with a large green opposite, Welcomed our Husky after his walk on the green , had a live band in the evening unfortunately a little to late for our visit . Will definitely return when visiting Diss again in the future.

Really nice pub, lovely staff and a great garden with an interesting statue 🤣 we only had drinks but it was lovely to be there on a beautiful sunny day.

Beautiful building and a vibrant atmosphere. Sadly not the choice of real ale that I would like but a wide selection of other drinks.

I have been drinking here for years on and off I have never eaten here but it's a nice place to sit for a drink. It has outside tables front of the house and the back and across the road is a children's park and also has benches it's a really nice pub staff are friendly

Having visited Diss on many occasions and never going down the road this pub is situated on, I was completely shocked! Situated on a lovely large green, complete with a park for the children whilst you relax with a drink (plenty of picnic tables) The pub inside is welcoming, as are the staff, we shall certainly be returning in future.

Website looks fantastic…. Walked in on Sunday lunchtime. Two men at bar, at 1pm pub empty. No food being served at all, or even a suggestion of where we might walk to. So so disappointing as the pub website exudes promises and mouth watering dishes….

First time visitor and lone female drinker. I found this to be a lovely pub with a great selection of draught lager, ale and cider. Good variety of bottled goods and top shelf. Fabulously attentive staff who were polite, friendly and quick! Welcoming and safe environment with friendly, chatty locals. Large bar with generous indoor seating accompanied by good outside area. Would definitely visit again. Thanks for a top evening!

Fantastic local pub, real ales, Sunday roast,(book advisable), outside seating, live bands, lunch tues-fri, friendly staff, well behaved dogs allowed, kids play area over the road.

HUGE shame the kitchen is currently closed. Big fan from Norwich, can't wait to revisit. Your food is amazing!!!

Excellent venue for lunch in an old inn overlooking Fair Green. Good food served Tuesday to Friday, lunchtimes only, and a traditional roast on Sunday. Definitely worth a visit

A relatively limited menu and they only serve food lunchtimes Tuesday to Friday and a Sunday roast. But, the food, the service and the pub itself are all first rate. An imaginative menu and you'd have to be a very fussy eater not to find something to your taste. Also a good selection of beers and ciders, one of the best pints of Timothy Taylor's Landlord that I've ever tasted - perfectly kept! Menu changes from week to week with new dishes appearing regularly.

We were staying with friends in Diss and wanted some lunch. I've not thought much about places to eat in Diss as they are generally disappointing. Not so the Cock Inn. We ate in the large garden and we were so impressed by both the quality and the quantity of the food. The Cock only does lunchtimes and the menu is not vast but what they do they do so well. We ranged across the menu from gnocchi to fish to BBQ ribs and it was all great. It was a lovely lunchtime experience.

Call for an impromptu lunch and because of the hot weather they were only doing poles platters of cheese , meet and fish. We ordered and meat and fish platter and share them and they were absolutely first class. Lots of fresh salad lovely bread excellent ale one of the best hostelries in Diss.

The dish is always so much more than the menu suggests. Chris is so creative and expert at delivering super tasty dishes. We had an amazing lunch of seafood platter and fishfinger sandwich. Wow! Absolutely delicious. Also sneaked a cheeky caramel and peacan pie which was to die for. Been a long time since we’ve been, but can’t wait to return.

Lovely pub serving excellent lunches. Chef is great and Menu offers unusual lunch choices which are delicious. Sadly it's not open every day of the week for lunches, as it would be great to go there every time we shop in Diss. Highly recommended.

Really great place. Lovely food and very pleasant staff.

We popped in for lunch with friends. We had a friendly welcome and were told as we hadn't booked it would be an hours wait which was fine with us. The menu was small but varied and we all thoroughly enjoyed our top quality meals. There was good beer selection and the whole meal with drinks, coffee and desert came to less than £100 for the four of us. We will definitely visit again.

How this pub doesn’t sit higher up the rankings for Diss and the surrounding areas is beyond me. Of all the places to eat in Diss, this is the leading light.

Two excellent lunches this week. So good we had to return the following day. It is a long time since we have such perfect meals. Delicious food, expertly cooked and presented. Lovely friendly staff and exceptional value. Highly recommended.

Traditional Pub, Friendly and welcoming. Good selection of drinks. Beer Garden with crazy golf and flower borders.

Ate here for the first time last week. The food was gorgeous and so fresh. The menu changes regularly. This is not the usual pub food, but something on a different level. Will return soon.

I was here on Thursday 24 September at about 5 p.m. There were lots of friendly regulars in who were chatty and nice to spend time with. They loved meeting Jack Russell, Millie! Sarah on the bar was very welcoming and nice to chat to.

Very rewarding lunchtime visit to this great little pub , tucked away in the quiet corner of Diss. Location is great , and access/parking is very easy. Warm welcome , lovely open log fire , and the place was spotlessly clean. The lunchtime menu was light , and reasonably priced - with some real variety and inventiveness. Menu changes every day , and my particular choice of ‘Surf and Turf’ was so obviously fresh and lively , together with real care taken over both the presentation , and the cooking itself. Cutlery , plates etc were also spotless. I was very impressed with the efficiency and helpfulness of the staff. Beer glasses were likewise spotless , and the wonderfully fresh Spitfire beer I had was poured straight from the barrel. It really doesn’t get much better than this. I admire their stance as a lunchtime food only venue - with evenings as a proper local community pub. The atmosphere is positive and upbeat , and free of the more modern distractions of more commercially-based enterprises. Altogether a superb visit , and a venue I would have no hesitation in recommending. Well done.

A catch up with friends over drinks. Really liked it here,good relaxed environment. Service a tad slow but not too bothered.

Imaginative fresh menu, with culturally diverse dishes. Every day the menu changes and it always is the best in Diss.Superb in every way .

Nice open bar and friendly service. Good layout so you can stand at the bar and socialise, or sit at more private tables. Really liked this bar and would come back here as a good location and easy to park here.

Good place to go for a pint and chill with friends

Our favourite place in Diss (and surrounding ) restaurants. Fabulous Sunday lunch. Husband is bit of a 'foodie' & it's his favourite too.

I knew a girl who liked The Cock Inn so much and I can now see why, great place and friendly atmosphere sitting outside watching the sun go down over fair green!

Fabulous food at a fabulous price

The best food I have eaten in ages! I could have chosen any of the lunches but opted for the goats cheese parcels with walnut and pear salad. It was delicious and just the right amount for lunch. My partner had the seafood chowder which was equally delicious and very reasonably priced. We are definitely returning soon!

Another wonderful roast, we had 1 beef and 3 chicken. Amazing cauliflower purée with the chicken, would love more! High quality meat and huge yorkies, beef meltingly tender, and delicious perfectly cooked veg. As always very friendly helpful staff and always welcoming with the dog. We were so stuffed we couldn’t manage dessert but the chilled cherry rice pudding sounded wonderful. Perfect area for dog friendly families and a good walk on fair green after.

Dog friendly. Beautiful old pub full of interest but with a modern twist. Lovely roast beef lunch, amazing root mash, perfect veg and lovely pork crackling too. We asked for a bit of both and they were happy to oblige, nothing is too much trouble. Great friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere, love the old juke box. Hidden gem of diss and wonderful lunches in the week. Compliments to the chef! Walked the dog on fair green afterwards, a beautiful historic area of diss.

We've known about this place for years, only just going round to trying it - for Sunday lunch with friends. Booked for one o'clock, not busy when we arrived, several staff around all giving the impression that they would do what they wanted to do first and then attend to us, although this attitude did improve to an extent as time went on. The interior is delightful,really well decorated and fitted out, a very pleasant environment. Orders taken reasonably quickly although the whole meal was at a very leisurely pace - again, seemed to come to our table when they remembered abut us rather than in a more timely fashion. Choice of chicken, duck, monkfish or veggie option: between us we had all three non-veggie dishes. Very nice presentation on the plate, well prepared meat and separate vegetables. Portions on the small side - we are not young and don't have big appetites, polished the whole lot off with no problem. with a bit of a feeling we could have managed more. I think hungry youngsters might have been more disappointed. Coffee is coffee, unusual not to have a choice these days. Good bar range and reasonable wine list. Food prices very reasonable.

Much better than its overall TA rating of 16/53. The Cock Inn is right up there with the very best lunch venues in the county. My only l regret is that it is only open for lunches.

Disappointed with lunch / much smaller menu/no starters/and was difficult to choose a main course that appealed. Such a shame, as previously we thought it very good, so not sure what’s happened.

Enjoyed the Cock Inn, nice place, great service, and good honest lunch at fair prices. Cold today and the room near the front door a bit chilly as people came in and out will be back in the summer

A great pub with good sized portions of food that don't make you feel sick because they're too big and the drink selection is really good. The staff were nice and there was a nice atmosphere, even earlier on when the weren't many people there. There is a park across the road which you can sit at, and it also has some typical children's park activities like swings and monkey bars. I would highly recommend.

Atmosphere excellent, bar was busy. Staff friendly and efficient. Nine of us for lunch. Limited menu (choice of four mains and four puddings) but there was something to suit everyone so it was certainly not a problem. I think it might have been the last food before Christmas break. Food was delicious (beef roast with tender meat, plenty of vegetables; baked apple). This was a return visit and I will certainly go again.

The Cock Inn, overlooking the picturesque Fair Green in Diss, is well worth a visit. I've only been for the Sunday lunch but will be returning soon for a weekday lunch as well. They don't serve food in the evenings as landlord/chef Chris is a one-man band and probably wants some sort of a life!

Ashley is brilliant behind the bar. Always remembers us for our weekly post sing pint. Great welcome.

We come here for a lunch once a month or so in our break and always have a delicious meal. We pre-order and the food is always ready to go at the time we state meaning we can get back to work without being late. The menu changes every week so there's always something new to try. The food is interesting and 'outside of the box' - I had a delicious fried avocado which I chose purely out of curiosity but very much enjoyed. The chorizo & chickpea tagine and seafood chowder i've had in the past were excellent, too. The chips are the best in the world, if the meal doesn't come with chips I order some extra! I wish the Cock served food in the evening because I would eat here all the time. They are great at tweaking the dishes to any requirement and have been known to whip up a Vegan menu for my friend. My favourite place to eat, 5/5.

Nice surroundings, comfortable atmosphere

This is without doubt the best pub food in the country, don't believe me ? try it and see and you will be hooked as a regular, if competition inspectors awarding best pub awards haven't tried this one they are missing the sure winner.

Cold atmosphere and what I saw of the food brought out it was over priced like the beer

Second visit here did not disappoint. Lunch menu is small which I like as it suggests the chef is cooking a fresh rather than reheating food. I had crispy lamb tacos- yum!, fresh and tasty. My partner had jerk monkfish, also delicious. Plates are small yet enough. We’ve eaten Sunday lunch here too which was equally brilliant.
