Came across this gem today and was able to get a table without booking! The food was delicious (I loved the mac and cheese and the pork belly) The service was great, every member of staff acknowledged us either by saying hello or a subtle smile. I’ll add I manage a steakhouse out of Brighton so I know what I like to expect and I can honestly say I will be back very soon.

Food was great, but the experience left me really disappointed. I’d confirmed twice that the set menu would be available on Easter Friday — I chose the date for affordability and planned everything around it. When we arrived, we were told it wasn’t running. As someone who’s neurodivergent, I rely on accurate info to make outings manageable. I felt dismissed when I raised it, suppressing a meltdown on what was meant to be a treat. Really disheartening — especially during a cost of living crisis. Not the inclusive experience I’d hoped for.

Visited on Good Friday- really wanted to be blown away as seen great reviews but wasn’t. Decor was good and staff were mostly friendly and helpful. It felt clean too. Front of house lacked a little attentiveness required at times (waiting 20 minutes for tap water after also ordering our drinks when we first got in and having to ask again) - but we’re mostly friendly. Menu seemed limited that by 3pm, the steak cut sizes we wanted had sold out so had to go for alternative menu choices. I had the starter of scallops - 2 scallops for £14…. I’d rather pay a little more and actually get 3/4 scallops but £7 a scallop seems extortionate. I opted for the chicken Caesar salad in the end - nothing special sadly. My friend went for rump steak - that was cooked nicely. Cocktails were not very tasty. All in all it was ok. Wasn’t amazing for £128 between us so won’t be rushing back.

The first time back since the new move, the food was great and the chateaubriand steak was amazing as always. We spent over £200 between the two of us which is fine for a good food but the service lacked the personal touch. The server was polite but that's were it ended. When we go out for a meal it's not just the food that's important the service aswell. It's a package to make the evening. In the old location they had the service they had communication and took the time to talk, it's not just about taking an order and bringing to the table. Would I rush back again? No. Which is a real shame.

I visited The Coal Shed in Brighton (North Street) yesterday evening for the first time after hearing great things, and while the food was truly exceptional, the premium caviar and fillet steak were both top quality, the service unfortunately fell short. Despite placing my order before a nearby table, they were served before me, which was disappointing. I ordered the fillet steak medium rare, and while it was cooked to perfection, I wasn’t asked at any point how the food was or whether everything was to my satisfaction. For a restaurant with such a strong reputation, I had expected a more attentive experience. The food alone was excellent and worth the praise, but the lack of service on this occasion affected the overall impression. As a result, I did not feel it was appropriate to leave a tip.

We did impromptu lunch. I am very funny about steak have it very rarely and only when it’s really good reputation. I ordered fillet and my partner ordered two sides. the pulled beef croquettes and beef tartare. Firstly the food looked great. Service was a little slow and not super friendly. But the food was the star. The steak medium rare was excellent. The peppercorn sauce is probably the best peppercorn sauce I’ve tasted ever. Regardless of where in the world. (Spoilt a bit by the cornflower still undissolved in the bottom. But there was plenty of it to hide that) The triple cooked chips were excellent. The tartare looked amazing but a little disappointing for matching the taste. The pulled beef croquettes style things although starter/sides were fantastic. And with the various sauces and dipped in the peppercorn, was divine. We have been here many times for cocktails. And I rate this random steak experience with close par to the a5 wagu I had in Maldives of all places! Certainly the sides and sauce truly made it memorable. I’ll be trying a more expensive cut next time I’m there.

4.5/5! We were off out celebrating and really wanted to enjoy a good steak. We came across this place walking past it and we are so glad we did! Jade was our waitress and we can't fault her, one of the best waitresses we have ever experienced! She was so attentive, knowledgeable and everything was so well timed. The food was delicious too. Only reason it wasn't 5* is that we had quite a long time to wait for our food. Jade did keep up informed, it was just a little too long for us. We did ask for 1 starter to be served with our mains but it didnt explain the wait. The meat was cooked rare/medium rare. About 40+ minute wait for the food. Old fashioned drink has a string smoky flavour, so some may like or not like this. It was a little overwhelming for us. Great selection of wines. Would definitely recommend and we will be returning!

Very dissatisfying - lights in the restaurant were dimmed shortly after we arrived so couldn't read the menus had to use the light on the table and our mobiles. There were five in our party one of which had to sit on a sofa which was wedged up against the table and other chairs making it extremely difficult to get out to go to the rest room. Drinks took forever to arrive - would be an idea to teach your staff in this expensive setting to pour wine. Ours was slopped over the glasses and the table. The food was mediocre our order was wrong and we received some items that we had ordered and some that we hadn't. Food again took a long time to arrive and we had to keeping asking waiting staff. Maybe we came on an off night but very disappointing nevertheless.

I recently dined at the coal shed with high expectations, hoping for a pleasant meal and a smooth dining experience. Unfortunately, my visit was far from satisfactory. I ordered a steak cooked to medium, but what was brought to the table was cooked rare, with a cool, red center—well below the level of doneness I had requested. I immediately sent the steak back to the kitchen, expecting a quick and accurate correction. However, this mistake, combined with the time it took to remedy the situation, left me feeling frustrated. To make matters worse, I had a client with me during this visit, one I was hoping to impress in order to secure future work. Unfortunately, this mishap turned the dining experience into a far from ideal one, creating a negative impression that could have easily been avoided. Given the premium price of the steak and the importance of getting basic requests right, I found this experience to be substandard. As a result, I cannot recommend this restaurant for anyone seeking a reliable, quality meal, especially if you are trying to make a positive impression on important business matters. I would appreciate a formal response from the restaurant regarding this issue and how such errors will be addressed to avoid similar disappointments in the future. I hope that management takes this feedback seriously to ensure a higher standard of service moving forward

Really disappointing Sunday roast. Everything tasted great except the beef, which was bland and gristly. The vegetables were just warm and the potatoes were reheated, claggy and soggy. Long time customer of the coal shed over many years. The most recent visits to the new premises have unfortuntley been somewhat lacklustre. Good wines on wine list, however annoyingly some not available (we were told after ordering). Companions steak was not great and we got a refund due to it being gristly and not the best. The kitchen (which is open) had our food sat for over five minutes (we were sat literally opposite) listening to the sounds of service 4 times before collected. Our waiter was a lovely chap who was very apologetic but it was a Tuesday lunch time not on peak and not that busy. It’s lost its sparkle that it used to have and we unfortunatley we have given it numerous tries since its move (maybe been maybe unlucky) but will be using other establishments in the city where it’s not pot luck!

I'd only give it one star, not because the food was bad, but because the whole experience was a bit disappointing. We turned up without a reservation and were offered a table in the bar area, which has small tables but from what I saw they are used to serving Sunday Roast in the area. We ordered a cider and a coke and then it took a while for the food to arrive. While we were waiting, two ladies sat at the next table and one of them decided to paint her nails in the restaurant (nails polish smells horrible in a dining area!). The SR is family-style, so they bring a few dishes to share. When the sirloin came, the runner had no space to put the plate, so I lifted 3 empty bottles off the table. She left the plate and left me with the bottles in my hands, so I had to ask her to please take them away. The other option was to put them on the floor, which is not appropriate. We put the sides on our plates to save space. If you look at the video, you can see that one of the plates was half floating (the table should be 50 cm in diameter tops). I signalled to a waiter to take the empty plate, and he was carrying a glass of sparkling wine that wasn't for me. He accidentally turned it over and ended up wetting my shoulder, breast, arm, hip, leg and the booth where I was sitting. He apologised profusely, and I know he didn't mean to do it, but I was already wet and cold because we were sitting near the door, which was constantly opening to let people in and out. The food got cold while I used a napkin to dry myself. After a while, he came over to tell me he'd taken the drinks (coke and cider) off the bill, which I appreciated, but after ALL that, I wasn't happy. We finished eating because I was hangry, the meat was good, but the sides, even the extra cauliflower, were only ok. So, yesterday, we spent £69.75 for two of us, service and a sparkling bath included.

- Decor feels very nice and lighting intimate - Food was great, very tasty, well presented - Service of food was slow (kids finished their meal) and then we were served! Maybe ok in Wagamama, not what you expect of a fairly upmarket restaurant! - Waitress was amazing (attentive, well mannered and friendly) - Front of house (grumpy as)! We also received one drinks menu between four and when I asked for a kids menu (as we weren't given any) we received a kids desert menu before we had even eaten. Again pretty poor for a restaurant of this calibre! Eating out for me is both the food and service combined. If it wasn’t for the amazing waitress that served the meal and our drinks then it would have been a three star review. Our table was booked for 21:15 to celebrate our anniversary. The table was slightly delayed due to being busy/running behind. We were then seated in a very tight spot whereby my partner was not comfortable as he has staff knocking into him every time they served the tables either side. It was extremely loud and the music made it extra difficult to hear. We were then moved as the staff recognised it was too much of a tight squeeze. We were then seated in front of the kitchen. We did not get our mains until 22:40pm. I had ordered a steak to be cooked at medium. When this arrived, it was blue, we sent this back as it was under cook to what I had requested. I felt immediately uncomfortable as we were sat in front of the kitchen and could see multiple staff, including what I assume is the manager go over to see why it was sent back and who the table was. This really affected the dining experience. Once I received the dish back, I cut into it and saw that it hardly cooked much more. Still blue. I felt I was unable to send it back again after the first experience. Additionally, we had ordered side dishes which were getting cold and my partner trying to hold off eating his meal so we could eat together. When it came to paying the bill, the server recognised that my steak still was not cooked at medium so took half the price off for my steak. The whole experience was very disappointing particularly as we previously dined here at original location so we had high expectations. We were also frustrated and disappointed in their offer to only pay half of my steak considering the prices they charge which did not reflect the value and quality this time round. At a restaurant like this, you don’t expect to return your steak once let alone twice… sadly won’t be dining here again or recommending.

North St edition: bit less intimate than the old Boyce's St location but the food makes up for it. Sunday lunch with extras and birthday desserts. Delicious meats and served with care and love.

Good service, food was very good and came at reasonable time frames. Drinks was nice as well with good selection. Didn't feel rushed, changed order slightly to add things to my order and was great, done with no fuss or issues. Went for a birthday meal and even got a little treat signed for birthday after.

I visited this restaurant whilst in Brighton for a friend’s birthday and had a wonderful experience. The staff were super friendly and attentive, even allowing us to bring in a cake to celebrate whilst also bringing my friend a special birthday dessert on top. I tried a couple of delicious cocktails, my favourite being the Spicy Guava Margarita and we shared lots of starters with my favourite being the Blue Prawn Toast! I had a lamb roast for my main which was probably the best roast I’ve ever had, even the carrots were incredible, although I would recommend adding an extra stuffing ball to the roast dinners. The atmosphere of the restaurant was wonderful, the decoration was amazing and it felt super intimate. I’d love to return to this restaurant or their London venue to take a look at their seafood counter or try their 2/3 course lunch set.

We’ve visited the new Coal Shed three times recently for a late Sunday lunch with different friends, everyone has throughly enjoyed the experience, though on the higher side of what you’d expect to pay in Brighton the quality, service and atmosphere justify it, the cauliflower cheese is particularly delicious and my husband who is vegetarian has always managed to find something he likes.

Took my partner for a birthday dinner. Exceptional service and food and a really beautiful space. We had short rib doughnuts (I could have just had a big bowl of those and been very happy,) the sweetcorn ribs (lovely small plate option) and then shared a chateaubriand with fries and spinach. It was good perfectly and was delicious. Portions were a really good size and we had a few items from the cocktail menu too. Value was great and we’ll certainly be coming back.

The Coal Shed in Brighton is a true gem. I had been looking forward to having a meal at this renowned steakhouse, and I finally did—along with my partner and our three-year-old. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted in a warm and welcoming manner. The staff immediately showed they were very child-friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The atmosphere of the restaurant is simply fantastic—elegant, well-balanced in terms of lighting and decor, with a stylish yet cosy ambiance. Now, onto the food. It was simply superb. From the starters (we had the sesame aubergine and beef tartare) to the perfectly cooked main meat cuts, as well as the thoughtfully crafted kids' menu, everything was beautifully presented and well-balanced in flavour. Each dish had a distinctive personality, as if every ingredient had been carefully chosen rather than just placed there by chance. The customer service was also excellent—our server was attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout the entire meal. We ended our dining experience with cocktails, which were equally impressive. Price-wise, I believe the cost is very fair for the quality you receive. This is undoubtedly a place we will be returning to. Highly recommended!

An impressive selection of steak cooked by the magic of fire, just like nature intended. Not the cheapest option available for a fine feed, but a great one for really pushing the boat out.

Incredibly convenient location - stepped off the bus and into the restaurant. Decor is beautiful and we we warmed through within minutes. Glorious bar area to wait in but we were taken straight through. The Spiced Pear cocktail was a wonderful way to start our Coalshed adventure. Thankfully it was Sunday so we opted for the roast but there was so much in the menu we wanted to try! The roast was sublime - and just enough to fill us but not podge us. Obviously we had to have dessert - we chose the selection plate which then podged us delightfully. Thank you to the whole team - you guys worked so well together to give us a proper treat!

I booked the coal shed in Brighton via phone about four weeks ago for last night. When booking the table I explained that we would have a buggy with us and the lady on the phone said the last table was perfect for that fact. She found all my details online and we left it there and looked forward to coming over to Brighton for the meal. We had come over especially for the meal with our little daughter and booked a table for 18:30. I called before our booking to see if we could bring our reservation to a slightly earlier time, called and the land on the phone said there was no booking under my name. A £100 birthday voucher was in my pocket so as you can imagine I was rather annoyed. They said on the phone we can fit you on a table in the bar area so we walked up and had a look. When we got there the place was packed which is great and we decided that we would sit down and eat as Brighton was busy, we had the voucher and there was a gap for the buggy. Food was good, they provided us with a glass of bubbles on the house and reduced our bill slightly. In all honesty, it ruined the whole day, I’d looked forward to this all week, if not for longer. There was barely enough room for cutlery, plates and glasses and everything else just had to squeeze on, freezing cold air coming in from outside when the door was opened every minute. We would go again, and will be as we still have money on the voucher but it ruined the whole weekend.

Loved the Coal Shed ever since they opened at the original site on Boyce Street. First time eating in the new restaurant and they've lost none of the feel of the original but upped their game considerably. Still incredible steak cookery backed up with the same great service from the moment you walk in. But now the offering is broader and the premises bigger and bolder. If I had the money and didn't love cooking myself I'd eat here every day!

We booked the Longhorn private dining area for my wifes 40th birthday at the end of January and what a fantastic overall experience! Mimi and Molly were so helpful with the booking/pre ordering process which made a huge difference. On the night, Claudio looked after us perfectly (which was no mean feat as there were 16 thirsty people there!). The food was amazing and worth every penny - we will absolutely be back! To sum it up: 10/10 , would recommend!

Absolutely terrible. The manager was awful and kept asking to wait when the restaurant was empty since more than 30min. I do not recommend this restaurant.
