The menu was fabulous for a Gluten free customer but didn't shout about it - all starters were GF and the onion rings were too (first time my husband has had GF onion rings since been GF!). Food was delicious, service excellent.Thank you.

We ate there for the first time in April 2024. Three adults and two kids. The meat was excellent so was the rest of the meal. What we very much appreciated was the friendly service (also for kids) and the nice atmosphere. Thank you!

I was gifted a voucher for Sunday Roast at The Coal Shed in Brighton. Our server Serena was an absolute joy!! The food incredible, wine the same and it was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary. We will be back.

What an absolutely incredible experience we had at the Coal Shed! The food was outstanding, hands down one of the best meals I have ever had. For starters we got the truffle arancini (to share), they were incredible, you could definitely taste the truffle and the combination with the parmesan cheese was wow. I wish they gave 4 pieces instead of 3, but that's my preference as it would be easier to share. We also had the slow cooked pork belly, which was absolutely delicious. It was so tender, it melted in my mouth! I was in heaven! The steak was also really good, but the triple cooked chips stole the show. I would go back to Brighton just to have another incredible meal at the Coal Shed!

We have been here before and enjoyed the food and ambiance, so tried again last minute on Saturday and the friendly staff managed to find us a slot at 5pm. Menu is nice and simple, the normal wine list a bit basic, but there are other wines available at extra cost. There is enough variety on the menu for meat and fish eaters, can't comment on vegetarians. The food was really nice and the waiting staff very friendly and helpful. My Steak was well cooked and the ladies Halibut was also spot on. We probably ordered more sides than needed, but ate the lot as it was delicious. No room for pudding. Excellent restaurant, waiting staff and chefs!!

Fantastic!! Had a great time and enjoyed a perfect steak cooked to perfection with a unique flavour.. The waiters were very engaging and made our anniversary meal even more enjoyable. Made us feel very special and answered my questions about the breed of the beef and where it had come from. We will certainly return here again whenever we are in Brighton. Thanks Guys

My partner and I came here 3 nights ago to celebrate our 6th anniversary, and it ended up being one of the best meals we have ever had. Being huge lovers of steakhouse restaurants, we agreed this is definitely in our top 3! We started out with the pork belly starters and shared the truffle arancini. The pork belly melted in the mouth, and the truffle arancini was just perfect! My partner is Italian, so she was extremely impressed with the truffle arancini. I had the sirloin steak with triple cooked chips.... incredible! The steak was no chewy at all and was just delicious, to be honest. Triple cooked chips are my absolute favourite, and these ones were again... spot on! They even brought out mini desserts for us to say happy anniversary. Very nice touch there. Overall, we were very impressed with everything, and if we ever visited Brighton again, we would not hesitate to visit this restaurant again!

Lunch for two. The monkfish and cod were perfectly cooked. Triple cooked chips and runner beans also very good! Will return…thank you.

The food was amazing. The service was amazing. The atmosphere was amazing. This was great place to finish off our trip to Brighton. For anyone that loves steaks I would highly recommend checking this place out!! Also the onion rings and meringue pudding was delicious!

A really excellent meal with superb service! I just don't like having to pay 12.5 service charge. I would rather leave my own tip knowing that it goes to the waiting staff who served us!

This was one of the best meals I have ever had. I had the torched salmon starter and roast cod main. My wife had the beetroot and pork chop. Only slight criticism was my wife found the pork chop a bit fatty. The meal was a bit pricey, but well worth it. I have only given 4 stars for atmosphere because we were the 1st ones in the restaurant, which is our preference. I would definitely return if we go back to Brighton.

Really top notch service, the waitress on the first floor was very natural and engaging. The 800g Chateaubriand (yeah, humblebrag!) for two was cooked to perfection and the meat tender and lovely. Onion rings were a winner!

We had the chateaubriand (excellent), truffle mac n cheese(pretty good), mash potatoes and gravy(delicious), and pavlova(perfection). It was a wonderful evening.

Way too expensive for a very small and cramped venue, if you like rich sauce on your meat,then you will love it here. £16 for green beans cooked in loads of butter?

The food was superb. The service was attentive but not over bearing. The only thing in my opinion is the decor is looking a bit tired. Example, the table tops have, in their current condition, seen better days. In my opinion there's a little too shabby in the shabby chic look. However, I came to try your food and very glad I did. It really was excellent and all served with a smile by your friendly staff.

Went there for a quiet birthday dinner. The staff texted to confirm my online reservation on the day and accommodated my request for a little birthday dessert with candle at the end of the meal. The restaurant is really nice inside, very cosy. Service really friendly and prompt. Food was really nice. My filler was cooked perfectly and the birthday boy went on about the pork chop. Definitely recommend.

Very friendly and professional staff, as steak fans it was absolutely amazing steak - rib eye for me, fillet for him- , it melted in my mouth, mash potatoes were to die for, and the peppercorn sauce was the best I've ever had. Only issue I found, was everything was charged separately and I'm used to having 'sides like chips, sauces, etc included in the price. Was a very expensive meal out but totally worth it as a special meal ( our 25th anniversary) I would also suggest that the service charge for groups under 10 people be scrapped. Our service charge for just 2 people was £17 which I think is overcharging for 2 people

Ive been anticipating my visit for ages as I love their other restaurants in Brighton (Burnt Orange and The Salt Room), however, the service was poor as felt as if we were an inconvenience to the staff, as well as a very long waiting time. The staff impacted the atmosphere (as it is a small restaurant) which was disappointing. The food was incredible but would of been a much better evening if the staff service was better.

A really lovely meal all around - the steaks were cooked to perfection and the service was great. Thank you Caroline for looking after us! We were celebrating my partners birthday and they brought out a small dessert on a decorated plate - really nice touch, thank you!

Enjoyed the working lunch menu with my husband. 1st time at The Coal Shed and we were really impressed with the restaurant, service, food quality and value. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.

Great steaks but I guess that’s the core offer - fulfilled extremely well. Very interesting snack offer (the ox cheek doughnuts) and desserts to please as well. Oh and a good range of wines by the glass, well described on the menu.

Four of us went to the Coal Shed for lunch last Sunday and we were all really pleased with our orders. We shared the arancini and sourdough (with amazing butter). Two of us shared the amazing Sunday roast - grilled steak with roast potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and cauliflower cheese. One of the nicest Sunday roasts I’ve ever seen and I liked that it was a massive perfectly grilled steak rather than standard roast beef. I had the burrata followed by the grilled cod. Excellent food and great service… do book in advance though. We managed to reserve the last available table and did see a couple of groups turned away at the door who tried their luck without a ressie.

Hubby and I had a wonderful meal at The Coal Shed. My Venison Haunch was exceptionally tasty and Ben's Beef Fillet wonderful. We added a Mashed Potato and Triple Cooked Chips side but couldn't get enough of the Mashed Potato; we'd come back just for the Mashed Potato. The staff were very welcoming and my cocktails enticing. We'll definitely be trying the London restaurant, and hopefully the Mashed Potato will be as tasty as Brighton's :)

The staff was lovely, we attended with our baby girl and all of them were really nice. The food is amazing! We had the 12 hours ribs and are out of this world. We will definitely come back!

went for a post Xmas Sunday roast with 11 family members, which was fabulous, rare roast beef was perfect (and I'm fussy), all the trimmings were very well done, unlike the usual over-cooked, kept-warm stuff, that you're given in most other places, great desserts, cocktails and wine too. We'll be back and look forward to the move to North Street

Excellent experience. We went full steak but there are plenty of other options and the food was delicious. Cannot fault it at all.

This steakhouse has a pretty diverse menu and the service is good. However, the meat was a bit too fatty and didn't quite hit the mark on the requested doneness. Overall, it's decent enough. But, heads up if you're vegetarian – my friend struggled to find anything to eat there, even the mashed potatoes had bits of bacon in them.

Went here for our anniversary and every part of the experience was perfect! The food was cooked to perfection, the staff were so lovely and helpful from beginning to end and I really cannot recommend the steaks here enough. Will be returning some day simply due to the lovely service and great food. Solid recommendation if you're looking for steak in Brighton with a nice atmosphere that is isn't so sophisticated you feel awkward just being there, but classy enough you know you're in for a exceptional time.

Beautiful steak , stunning starter.. food was spot on. Fillet steak cooked to perfection. Only thing I would say is more range on soft drinks if people cannot drink booze. Maybe like sugar free soft drinks. Xx

Our first visit to the Coal Shed Brighton and it certainly won’t be our last. We had a wonderful Sunday lunch. The food was plentiful and delicious, the ambience was nice and relaxed and we were looked after brilliantly by Ben. The music in a restaurant really sets the tone for me and it was just the right volume and a great playlist including tracks such as O-o-h Child by Five Stairsteps, a song I hadn’t heard in ages. I highly recommend a visit. Our 2nd visit to the Coal Shed and once again we enjoyed our visit. I've marked down the food a little compared to our first visit as the sirloin with the Sunday roast was a little too rare and a bit tough. Nico looked after us impeccably. The ambiance upstairs on our first visit was lovely but we found downstairs by the door a bit cold and we couldn't hear the music. Overall we still enjoyed our visit and will return but we'll definitely ask for a table upstairs.

We had an amazing opportunity of trying this place, and what an experience it was! The food was 10/10, great selection of starters and sides but the main course was just unbelievably outstanding, no surprise this place was filling up fast on a week day, make sure you make your reservations! Great food, very friendly staff and a beautiful atmosphere! Highlight of our trip.

What a fab evening in any possible way! The food was excellent, made with love, fine ingredients and nicely presented. The cocktails were delicious and a tasty surprise. The service was flawless and the upper room was very cosy and relaxed. It is definitely my favourite place to eat in Brighton.

Curious place, I have previously enjoyed the Tower Bridge restaurant on a number of occasions but the Brighton restaurant was lacking in both service and ambiance. Also the card only policy is an oddity in equivalent restaurants.

On average I visit this restaurant once or twice a year. My last visit was on 22/12/2023 Parking is close by (Churchill Square), has chargers for EVs Is is a busy restaurant so you need to book ahead. Menu isn’t large, typical I’d say for a steak house. The quality of steak is inconsistent as I had a visit in the last where it wasn’t up to what I’m used to have there. However, as per this visit, steak was amazing. I had the 300 gm ribeye and it was perfectly cooked, right temperature, right colour and juicy. I was so pleased with it. It’s a bit nobody there when it’s busy, does make it more of a casual dining. Staff is really friendly, they know their menu well. We tried few slides on this occasion: fries (wasn’t too good), mashed potatoes (recommended) Mac & cheese (not a personal fav anyway) but tasted good and greens which was nicely made. Price wise it’s in the upper end but with such meat quality, it’s definitely worth it. Good place for a date for sure. I recall few years ago, I took my other half there for her birthday and I mentioned that on the booking. The Chef sent her a chocolate truffle after the main course which was a really nice gesture. This is my personal first choice of a steak house to go to and will continue to be.

Drain Stink every few minutes, and we were rushed out before we were ready, such a shame as the food was good!

What a shame. I've been here a few times before and have had a mixed, but generally positive, experience. This time not so much... The food is great, and the staff are very friendly, but we were rushed out (I appreciate the two hour booking, but we ate as fast as the food was served (two, not three, courses)), and were still approached four times within the last 15 mins to vacate. Had we ordered starters god knows how much we would have overstayed our welcome. The waiting staff are absolutely lovely but you do get squeezed out. Get in, eat your food, get out! Also - and this is slightly awkward - there is a terrible intermittent smell when you sit at the back table which, when questioned, the waitess said "that's why we have the scented candle - there's a problem with the drains". (The scented candle was present but unlit :)) How the mighty fall!

Amazing lunch for our office Christmas do. we all loved the fact that all the dishes were served as a banquet and had so much choice and the food was excellent.

We travelled into Brighton especially for lunch yesterday. Ambling through The Lanes from the station on a pre-Christmas Saturday set the scene for the most delicious lunch that exceeded expectations (which were already high from dribbling over the menu in the days preceding!). We enjoyed snacking on the warm Sourdough and the delicious Truffled Arancini before the Chateaubriand to share with an array of sides; the mac & cheese and onion rings a must and all washed down with a perfectly smooth Malbec. On seeing the generous portion of sticky toffee pudding, we thought it would sink us but it was surprisingly light and perfect for sharing. Service was warm and attentive, while the atmosphere was a buzz with locals that are clearly very fond of this little gem. Thank you so much for a wonderfully unpretentious treat to start the holiday break. Happy Christmas!

This is a great restaurant, the steak was cooked to perfection, the service was top notch and there was also a good selection for my wife who is not a fan of steak. Looking forward to visiting the newly improved restaurant when it opens.

Went here recently for date night and the food continues to be phenomenal. Service was absolutely amazing and staff were kind and engaging. They were also kind enough to make me a non alcoholic cocktail that was off menu. Everything tasted quality and the triple cooked chips are to die for! The miso chicken starter was impeccable!

Was there for a birthday with my family. Had a superb window seat. Staff made us feel at ease , no pressure to turn us around and great food. The beef short rib is a definite repeat order for me. I look forward to seeing what they do in the new venue.

During my meal, me and my guest were not given a drink menu or told the drinks that were available. The meal that was given was not one that was ordered. The server was generally un-interested in our meal or experience. Other than this the meal was very nice, however we felt as if we were a nuisance to the server.

We went to the Coal Shed after reading all the positive reviews. Unfortunately it was far from ideal. We booked the private room for our party which they seemed to have forgotten about. This was sorted swiftly after I explained. The starters were nice enough. The main problem was their luck of methodology in serving, they served everyone an empty plate with a steak, minutes after they served everyone chips, minutes after regular sauces, minutes after salad in bowls, minutes after the blue cheese sauce that comes with it... As you can imagine by this point we had already eaten most of our food! They should have had three waiters attending a table of 12 not one person doing so many trips, or they could have brought it in a different order where the steaks are served last and still hot. For the price of the meal you expect a much better experience. The steaks were ok but no great, I ordered mine medium rare but it came cooked medium...

Good food if a bit over-priced. Let down rather by insincere over-friendly service.

Absolutely fab night, arrived 2 hours late to my reservation as I'd messed up the time however was still able to be seated and served, and amazing service provided. High prices for a very good reason, a great place for me and my partners anniversary!

Mais nous avons reçu un accueil téléphonique peu sympathique par une personne fort désagréable qui nous a annoncé que nous serions chargés bien qu'ayant annulé notre réservation 3 heures avant. Nous venons régulièrement de France à Brighton et c'est la première fois que nous rencontrons un service aussi peu qualitatif.

Sublime steak, possibly one of the best ribeye's I've ever eaten. Cannot recommend the food highly enough, the Mac and cheese side as well as the Caesar salad are a must to combine with your steak.

We loved the Coal Shed. From the second we walked in we were warmly welcomed. The entire staff was lovely to chat with, get recommendations from and enjoy our evening. We brought our 2 kiddos for a celebration dinner. They accommodated the kids and their Shirley Temple requests in stride and made for a absolutely memorable evening. We will be back!

I ate at the Coalshed, recently. It doesn't disappoint. I had the Ribeye Steak, w Triple cooked chips w Greenbeans and Bearnaise sauce. It was absolutely splendid. The best Steak I have had to date, which is saying something as I do a mean Steak, Myself. Try this place. You'll be glad that you did.

Well deserved name, very reminiscent to the steaks as it reminded me of a piece of coal. We got served as a side Onion Rings and Chips, arguable portion. Sauces? Not impressed. Price? 500 GBP

We were in Brighton celebrating one of our 50th Birthdays, we booked Sunday lunch, I always worry that it won’t be as good as mine or my husbands….how wrong was I !! The food was amazing, best roast I have had apart from my own, delicious, amazing beef, the cauliflower cheese was yummy, home made Yorkshire ( can I have the recipe!! ) Finished off with desserts to share, also delicious 😋 A brilliant find, lovely staff & great service…..highly recommend, hope to come back, will visit your restaurant in London soon xxxx

One of the best steak places in the South! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, service is better than in your average places, although for automatic service charge you would expect it.

The excellent reviews attracted us to try this restaurant. Went on Sunday evening really disappointed. Sorry to say but Service was slow. Had Mains only but just seemed very expensive for what it was. Happy to pay for quality food but fillet steak £35 was cold, monkfish was over cooked. But have to say the Short rib was very good and generous. Made a mistake and didn’t complain just paid it. Having thought about it just wasn’t good value with drinks for 4 people and no starters and 2 puddings @£260 Wasn’t worth the drive from London 😞
