Absolutely fabulous meal and fantastic service. A lovely atmosphere as well. My ribeye steak was cooked to perfection and the salty crust created by cooking over the fire was simply delicious. One of my favourite ways to enjoy a steak. The draft Guinness was exceptionally good for a restaurant as well - as good or if not better than some pubs. I would thoroughly recommend this place!

Hidden treasure! Had the best time celebrating my 18th, the complementary Prosecco from the get go made the atmosphere feel so welcome and enjoyable (aesthetic was beautiful too). The food was also delicious and the staff were all great! Thank you for a wonderful evening

Really disappointing Sunday roast. Everything tasted great except the beef, which was bland and gristly. The vegetables were just warm and the potatoes were reheated, claggy and soggy. The best part was the Cauliflower cheese, hot and very cheesy. The waitress was not bothered that I barely touched the beef. I think they need to readdress the perfect roast statement!

Thank you for an excellent lunch. Love what you’ve done with the place :) The 2 most important aspects were delivered perfectly; great food and friendly service. Even as 1 vegetarian and 1 pescatarian we were very happy in this meat focused restaurant. The halibut was perfect but try the kimchi grilled cheese sandwich!

New location for the restaurant. Not as good as its previous location. Historically it was excellent, now it’s big and clunky. A mix of staff, mix of standards. We may have just had a bad night. Slow service, wines not available, waitress had to change the steak order 3 times as choices weren’t available early evening.

Long time customer of the coal shed over many years. The most recent visits to the new premises have unfortuntley been somewhat lacklustre. Good wines on wine list, however annoyingly some not available (we were told after ordering). Companions steak was not great and we got a refund due to it being gristly and not the best. The kitchen (which is open) had our food sat for over five minutes (we were sat literally opposite) listening to the sounds of service 4 times before collected. Our waiter was a lovely chap who was very apologetic but it was a Tuesday lunch time not on peak and not that busy. It’s lost its sparkle that it used to have and we unfortunatley we have given it numerous tries since its move (maybe been maybe unlucky) but will be using other establishments in the city where it’s not pot luck!

We went to the Coal Shed for an 80th birthday and it didn’t disappoint! The food was excellent, I started with the smoked beets and followed it with a beautifully cooked Ribeye. As with many places like this my main quibble would be that with the cost of the steaks and mains that they don’t come with at least one side. Other than that it was really nice meal.

Had heard lots of good reports about the restaurant and have dined at all the others in the group. So I took my wife for a date night treat and we had a most wonderful meal. All the staff were so friendly, especially our waiter. Steaks were superb and the beef fat chips were probably the best we have ever had. The miso aubergine starter was to die for. Will definitely be going again soon.

I'd only give it one star, not because the food was bad, but because the whole experience was a bit disappointing. We turned up without a reservation and were offered a table in the bar area, which has small tables but from what I saw they are used to serving Sunday Roast in the area. We ordered a cider and a coke and then it took a while for the food to arrive. While we were waiting, two ladies sat at the next table and one of them decided to paint her nails in the restaurant (nails polish smells horrible in a dining area!). The SR is family-style, so they bring a few dishes to share. When the sirloin came, the runner had no space to put the plate, so I lifted 3 empty bottles off the table. She left the plate and left me with the bottles in my hands, so I had to ask her to please take them away. The other option was to put them on the floor, which is not appropriate. We put the sides on our plates to save space. If you look at the video, you can see that one of the plates was half floating (the table should be 50 cm in diameter tops). I signalled to a waiter to take the empty plate, and he was carrying a glass of sparkling wine that wasn't for me. He accidentally turned it over and ended up wetting my shoulder, breast, arm, hip, leg and the booth where I was sitting. He apologised profusely, and I know he didn't mean to do it, but I was already wet and cold because we were sitting near the door, which was constantly opening to let people in and out. The food got cold while I used a napkin to dry myself. After a while, he came over to tell me he'd taken the drinks (coke and cider) off the bill, which I appreciated, but after ALL that, I wasn't happy. We finished eating because I was hangry, the meat was good, but the sides, even the extra cauliflower, were only ok. So, yesterday, we spent £69.75 for two of us, service and a sparkling bath included.

- Decor feels very nice and lighting intimate - Food was great, very tasty, well presented - Service of food was slow (kids finished their meal) and then we were served! Maybe ok in Wagamama, not what you expect of a fairly upmarket restaurant! - Waitress was amazing (attentive, well mannered and friendly) - Front of house (grumpy as)! We also received one drinks menu between four and when I asked for a kids menu (as we weren't given any) we received a kids desert menu before we had even eaten. Again pretty poor for a restaurant of this calibre! Eating out for me is both the food and service combined. If it wasn’t for the amazing waitress that served the meal and our drinks then it would have been a three star review. I would definitely eat here again as a lively setting and food is very good and well priced, but if the service from front of house is like this again it will be my last visit. Thank you to the chefs for a lovely meal (talented) and well done to our lovely waitress for being so lovely :)

We had a selection of starters including the tuna tostadas, breads and scallops. Then we had a Delmonico Ribeye and Chateaubriand from the chalk board that were cooked to perfection. Sides were beautifully cooked chips and Caesar salad with one of each of the steak sauces. Staff were super friendly and the atmosphere was brilliant. Our table was booked for 21:15 to celebrate our anniversary. The table was slightly delayed due to being busy/running behind. We were then seated in a very tight spot whereby my partner was not comfortable as he has staff knocking into him every time they served the tables either side. It was extremely loud and the music made it extra difficult to hear. We were then moved as the staff recognised it was too much of a tight squeeze. We were then seated in front of the kitchen. We did not get our mains until 22:40pm. I had ordered a steak to be cooked at medium. When this arrived, it was blue, we sent this back as it was under cook to what I had requested. I felt immediately uncomfortable as we were sat in front of the kitchen and could see multiple staff, including what I assume is the manager go over to see why it was sent back and who the table was. This really affected the dining experience. Once I received the dish back, I cut into it and saw that it hardly cooked much more. Still blue. I felt I was unable to send it back again after the first experience. Additionally, we had ordered side dishes which were getting cold and my partner trying to hold off eating his meal so we could eat together. When it came to paying the bill, the server recognised that my steak still was not cooked at medium so took half the price off for my steak. The whole experience was very disappointing particularly as we previously dined here at original location so we had high expectations. We were also frustrated and disappointed in their offer to only pay half of my steak considering the prices they charge which did not reflect the value and quality this time round. At a restaurant like this, you don’t expect to return your steak once let alone twice… sadly won’t be dining here again or recommending.

This was My first meal at the new venue. The steak is absolutely delicious and of the same quality. However ! For some reason, They now feel the need, to cut up, said steak. Which means that the surface area, is massively increased. As a result it is COLD, by the time the meal is finished. Speaking for myself. I learned to use Cutlery from around the age of 4.

Everything just about perfect, from the staff to the atmosphere to the food. We had the pre-theatre menu which is a really good deal. The serving of the three courses was well paced and we were out of the door at 7pm ready for the 7.30 show at the Theatre Royal just around the corner. My only quibble was the £6 charged for a bottle of Lucky Saint zero alcohol beer, which meant I only had one drink throughout the meal.

I visited this restaurant whilst in Brighton for a friend’s birthday and had a wonderful experience. The staff were super friendly and attentive, even allowing us to bring in a cake to celebrate whilst also bringing my friend a special birthday dessert on top. I tried a couple of delicious cocktails, my favourite being the Spicy Guava Margarita and we shared lots of starters with my favourite being the Blue Prawn Toast! I had a lamb roast for my main which was probably the best roast I’ve ever had, even the carrots were incredible, although I would recommend adding an extra stuffing ball to the roast dinners. The atmosphere of the restaurant was wonderful, the decoration was amazing and it felt super intimate. The Coal Shed in Brighton is a true gem. I had been looking forward to having a meal at this renowned steakhouse, and I finally did—along with my partner and our three-year-old. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted in a warm and welcoming manner. The staff immediately showed they were very child-friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The atmosphere of the restaurant is simply fantastic—elegant, well-balanced in terms of lighting and decor, with a stylish yet cosy ambiance. Now, onto the food. It was simply superb. From the starters (we had the sesame aubergine and beef tartare) to the perfectly cooked main meat cuts, as well as the thoughtfully crafted kids' menu, everything was beautifully presented and well-balanced in flavour. Each dish had a distinctive personality, as if every ingredient had been carefully chosen rather than just placed there by chance. The customer service was also excellent—our server was attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout the entire meal. We ended our dining experience with cocktails, which were equally impressive. Price-wise, I believe the cost is very fair for the quality you receive. This is undoubtedly a place we will be returning to. Highly recommended!

First time eating in the new restaurant and they've lost none of the feel of the original but upped their game considerably. I booked the coal shed in Brighton via phone about four weeks ago for last night. When booking the table I explained that we would have a buggy with us and the lady on the phone said the last table was perfect for that fact. She found all my details online and we left it there and looked forward to coming over to Brighton for the meal. We had come over especially for the meal with our little daughter and booked a table for 18:30. I called before our booking to see if we could bring our reservation to a slightly earlier time, called and the land on the phone said there was no booking under my name. A £100 birthday voucher was in my pocket so as you can imagine I was rather annoyed. They said on the phone we can fit you on a table in the bar area so we walked up and had a look. When we got there the place was packed which is great and we decided that we would sit down and eat as Brighton was busy, we had the voucher and there was a gap for the buggy. Food was good, they provided us with a glass of bubbles on the house and reduced our bill slightly. In all honesty, it ruined the whole day, I’d looked forward to this all week, if not for longer. There was barely enough room for cutlery, plates and glasses and everything else just had to squeeze on, freezing cold air coming in from outside when the door was opened every minute. We would go again, and will be as we still have money on the voucher but it ruined the whole weekend.

Our Rating: 5 Star Plus! My wife and I visited the Coal Shed Brighton last night to celebrate her birthday and wow, what a celebration it was! We had decided to push the boat out and go for one of the Coal Shed’s premium steak options, but we were a little unsure on what precisely to order as we had never ordered steak by the 100g before! Our server Toby was wonderful, welcoming, charming and incredibly knowledgeable. He guided us through the steak options, including his recommended sizes and cuts based on our appetite and preferences. As I say, we really went for it and chose to share a 700g Chateaubriand (that’s about 24oz) and at £13/100g it cost an eye watering £91 without sides. For us, this means a trip to the Coal Shed will be a very decadent (and rare) treat - but neither of us could describe the steak as anything less than perfect. We had told Toby that we typically enjoy a filet steak cooked medium, and he told us how they recommend a large Chateaubriand be cooked medium-rare, but that if any of the pieces were too rare for us, they would happily put them back on their 500 degrees grill for us (we took Toby up on this for one of the slices). We also ordered sides of Beef Fat Chips and Mac & Cheese. The chips would be the only thing that we were slightly disappointed by, they were perfectly fine chips but they didn’t blow us away like the rest of our experience did. The Coal Shed Mac & Cheese might just be the best Mac & Cheese we have ever had, it was completely scrumptious. While we were waiting for our Steak to be cooked we were offered Bread and Butter, my wife was particularly impressed with how the Coal Shed managed her nut allergy - given that the bread on the menu typically is served with Dukkah which includes nuts. In conclusion we loved our trip to the Coal Shed Brighton, we will definitely be visiting again - it really is a special place for special occasions. Note: We sat in the Bar area, and this was lots of fun, comfortable bench to sit on and the opportunity to people watch as well as enjoy our meal, but the bar tables are small and circular, I would possibly recommend you request a table in the main restaurant if you are planning on ordering lots of side dishes. Parking: Really easy, park in the Brighton Theatre NCP, walk out the back door of the car park, down past Barclays to the street, cross over at the traffic lights and you’re basically at the Coal Shed’s front door.

Unfortunately, our visit to Coal Shed was a disaster. We ordered oysters, and both my companion and I ended up with severe food poisoning shortly after our meal. To make matters worse, the oysters seemed to be detached from the shells, which felt a bit off from the start. The texture and presentation were strange, and in hindsight, that should have been a red flag. We spent the rest of the evening extremely unwell, and it ruined what was supposed to be an enjoyable outing. When you go to a restaurant, especially one that serves seafood, you expect fresh, properly prepared food—and sadly, that was not our experience here. We definitely won’t be returning, and we urge others to be cautious if considering oysters at this place.

Silly me I accidentally booked it for the day before, nevertheless, the manager at CoalShed was able to deduct this on our final billing. She was warm and lovely, took our clothes and put it away safe for us. Our waiter Ian was ever so helpful! Able to answer all our questions and queries about the food. The food was delicious and it all came together!! The atmosphere was perfect! And we enjoyed this experience and it was all thanks to the staff! 10/10 for everything!

The only thing this place has in common with high end food is the price. We went as a family to celebrate my son’s birthday and he got food poisoning after eating their fried chicken for starters. We all shared the food apart from that dish. When I contacted the restaurant the staff who really couldn’t care a less told me that some mystical non biased third party would determine whether or not he was poisoned. They couldn’t tell me how they would do this and as of a week later I still have heard nothing from the third party after filling in their forms. As for the food-£6 chips that could just as well have come from Iceland and cooked as oven chips. Egg cups of a gloopy pepper sauce for £2.50 that could’ve been bisto gravy. They couldn’t even be bothered to put peppercorns in it. Burnt churros for dessert that I’ve tasted better on Brighton Pier. Pretentiousness at its finest. I would strongly advise staying away from this place if you don’t want to feel as if you’ve just been on the end of a horrible joke walking away almost £400 down wondering why you were stupid enough to think this was a decent place to celebrate.

Myself and my partner had dinner last night at the Coal shed for the first time since it reopened. Wow, it's a stunning restaurant, beautifully designed with subdued lighting. Service was friendly and professional. The food was delicious, we had the rotisserie chicken and fillet steak, with sides and tasty margaritas.

Our first visit, and we were very impressed with all aspects. Not cheap, but well worth the money. We will definitely be dining there again.

The quality of food was outstanding, justifying the higher prices for a Sunday Rotisserie, and Sean's attention, service and humour completed a wonderful birthday lunch!

Wow just wow. What an incredible venue. The food was amazing (peppercorn sauce 10/10), the service provided (Beth - outstanding), and the Ambiance- BOOOOM, topped it off. Defo be back.

The pub is good. The beer is good. The majority of staff are lovely to deal with. Mr tattooed-insecure-Hipster behind the bar is probably the unhappiest and most unfriendly man I’ve had the displeasure of dealing with. However, I’ve given 2 stars as beer is good and the other members of staff are lovely.

Pleasant pub with sizeable garden. Lots of beers on but no ale on the hand pumps which was a shame. Worth a visit though.

Love the breakfast club! Gri was particularly helpful with allergy/intolerance guidance. I have coeliac but there were lots of options and it's a nice relaxed environment. Dogs welcome too!
