We managed to get a table in The Coal Shed on a Saturday evening, just by chance as we walked past it looked amazing so we enquired whether they could seat us for dinner. Luckily they could. The decor and ambience is fabulous, low lighting and everything is immaculate and so stylish! The service is second to none- we had our wine glasses topped up throughout, the waiters were so polite and charming. Absolutely EXCELLENT standard of service. We shared a plate of Lindisfarne Oysters to start, which were divine. Then for our main courses we had the Sussex rotisserie chicken and the North Atlantic Halibut (this was my choice) it didn’t disappoint! It was a buttery soft, perfectly cooked piece of fish with a tangy sauce filled with capers and samphire. My partner praised his half chicken as incredibly tasty! The bill was very reasonable too. I highly recommend The Coal Shed in Brighton for a superb meal with outstanding service.

Booked for dinner on a Sunday. It was busy so needed to book. starter was the flatbread - which was great. Followed by steak, cooked just right. Should have had the mash instead of the chips, but hey ho, & the spinach was superb. Would Definity go again, everything was spot on.

The food and service was excellent. The only downside was that the restaurant pack the tables of 2 in so it feels like you’re in a fishbowl with the next table - often taking endless photos for social media which is not very relaxing

Dishonest tipping practice – be careful We dined at The Coal Shed Brighton on 21st May. The bill was £384.06 including service charge, and we also gave the server a tip in cash. But later I found out they charged my card £441.67 – an extra 15% added without permission. When I went back to the restaurant, staff gave unclear excuses, and no one took responsibility. I got a refund after confronting them, but I emailed the group (Brighton and London branches) and never got a reply. This kind of dishonest behaviour makes me question the integrity of the whole chain. Always double-check your receipt and card charges before leaving.

The greeting from the Maitre d’ was lovely and the note I’d left about it being my partners birthday made the greeting much more personal. We received complimentary bubbles and Ellie-Rose our waitress was super helpful, guiding us through the menu and making excellent recommendations. We loved the ambiance and the service which was always timely and never too much. Our food was outstanding and both the Fillet and Wagyu steaks cooked to perfection. This is the most overated restaurant we have been to in Brighton and we live locally. We had booked in advance and had a confirmatory email but the booking was not on their system. We waited c40 minutes between starter and main course despite it being quiet. One of our steaks had too much gristle to be ok in a quality steak house. On the upside, the snacks were delicious and the service was very friendly. They gave us a discount on the price to compensate for the slow service, which was generous but should not be necessary. We will not be back. There are better options nearby for quality steaks and prompt friendly service.

Absolutely outstanding experience at The Coal Shed Brighton. The food was incredible—perfectly cooked steak, fresh seafood, and delicious sides that were full of flavor. Everything was beautifully presented and clearly made with top-quality ingredients. What really made the evening special was the service. The restaurant ambiance, wine, and service were excellent, particularly Posy, our delightful waitress. Unfortunately the Sunday lunch - lamb, fatty & mediocre; beef, tough & chewy - was simply not compatible with the excellent accoutrements complementing our meal. Our four-star review has therefore been given less for the Sunday lunch consumed and more in the hope that this lovely restaurant responds to the problem they have. We are aware that other tables shared similar views.

Food was great, but the experience left me really disappointed. I’d confirmed twice that the set menu would be available on Easter Friday — I chose the date for affordability and planned everything around it. When we arrived, we were told it wasn’t running. As someone who’s neurodivergent, I rely on accurate info to make outings manageable. I felt dismissed when I raised it, suppressing a meltdown on what was meant to be a treat. Really disheartening — especially during a cost of living crisis. Not the inclusive experience I’d hoped for.

Visited on Good Friday- really wanted to be blown away as seen great reviews but wasn’t. Decor was good and staff were mostly friendly and helpful. It felt clean too. Front of house lacked a little attentiveness required at times (waiting 20 minutes for tap water after also ordering our drinks when we first got in and having to ask again) - but we’re mostly friendly. Menu seemed limited that by 3pm, the steak cut sizes we wanted had sold out so had to go for alternative menu choices. I had the starter of scallops - 2 scallops for £14…. I’d rather pay a little more and actually get 3/4 scallops but £7 a scallop seems extortionate. I opted for the chicken Caesar salad in the end - nothing special sadly. My friend went for rump steak - that was cooked nicely. Cocktails were not very tasty. All in all it was ok. Wasn’t amazing for £128 between us so won’t be rushing back.

The first time back since the new move, the food was great and the chateaubriand steak was amazing as always. We spent over £200 between the two of us which is fine for a good food but the service lacked the personal touch. The server was polite but that's were it ended. When we go out for a meal it's not just the food that's important the service aswell. It's a package to make the evening. In the old location they had the service they had communication and took the time to talk, it's not just about taking an order and bringing to the table. Would I rush back again? No. Which is a real shame.

I visited The Coal Shed in Brighton (North Street) yesterday evening for the first time after hearing great things, and while the food was truly exceptional, the premium caviar and fillet steak were both top quality, the service unfortunately fell short. Despite placing my order before a nearby table, they were served before me, which was disappointing. I ordered the fillet steak medium rare, and while it was cooked to perfection, I wasn’t asked at any point how the food was or whether everything was to my satisfaction. For a restaurant with such a strong reputation, I had expected a more attentive experience. The food alone was excellent and worth the praise, but the lack of service on this occasion affected the overall impression. As a result, I did not feel it was appropriate to leave a tip.

We did impromptu lunch. I am very funny about steak have it very rarely and only when it’s really good reputation. I ordered fillet and my partner ordered two sides. the pulled beef croquettes and beef tartare. Firstly the food looked great. Service was a little slow and not super friendly. But the food was the star. The steak medium rare was excellent. The peppercorn sauce is probably the best peppercorn sauce I’ve tasted ever. Regardless of where in the world. (Spoilt a bit by the cornflower still undissolved in the bottom. But there was plenty of it to hide that) The triple cooked chips were excellent. The tartare looked amazing but a little disappointing for matching the taste. The pulled beef croquettes style things although starter/sides were fantastic. And with the various sauces and dipped in the peppercorn, was divine. We have been here many times for cocktails. And I rate this random steak experience with close par to the a5 wagu I had in Maldives of all places! Certainly the sides and sauce truly made it memorable. I’ll be trying a more expensive cut next time I’m there.

4.5/5! We were off out celebrating and really wanted to enjoy a good steak. We came across this place walking past it and we are so glad we did! Jade was our waitress and we can't fault her, one of the best waitresses we have ever experienced! She was so attentive, knowledgeable and everything was so well timed. The food was delicious too. Only reason it wasn't 5* is that we had quite a long time to wait for our food. Jade did keep up informed, it was just a little too long for us. We did ask for 1 starter to be served with our mains but it didnt explain the wait. The meat was cooked rare/medium rare. About 40+ minute wait for the food. Old fashioned drink has a string smoky flavour, so some may like or not like this. It was a little overwhelming for us. Great selection of wines. Would definitely recommend and we will be returning!

A really fantastic dinner party for our company, private dining, with a mix of dishes being brought out, the starters were all fantastic, especially the scallops, bang bang cauliflower and a different take on prawn toast. Very dissatisfying - lights in the restaurant were dimmed shortly after we arrived so couldn't read the menus had to use the light on the table and our mobiles. There were five in our party one of which had to sit on a sofa which was wedged up against the table and other chairs making it extremely difficult to get out to go to the rest room. Drinks took forever to arrive - would be an idea to teach your staff in this expensive setting to pour wine. Ours was slopped over the glasses and the table. The food was mediocre our order was wrong and we received some items that we had ordered and some that we hadn't. Food again took a long time to arrive and we had to keeping asking waiting staff. Maybe we came on an off night but very disappointing nevertheless.

I recently dined at the coal shed with high expectations, hoping for a pleasant meal and a smooth dining experience. Unfortunately, my visit was far from satisfactory. I ordered a steak cooked to medium, but what was brought to the table was cooked rare, with a cool, red center—well below the level of doneness I had requested. I immediately sent the steak back to the kitchen, expecting a quick and accurate correction. However, this mistake, combined with the time it took to remedy the situation, left me feeling frustrated. To make matters worse, I had a client with me during this visit, one I was hoping to impress in order to secure future work. Unfortunately, this mishap turned the dining experience into a far from ideal one, creating a negative impression that could have easily been avoided. Given the premium price of the steak and the importance of getting basic requests right, I found this experience to be substandard. As a result, I cannot recommend this restaurant for anyone seeking a reliable, quality meal, especially if you are trying to make a positive impression on important business matters. I would appreciate a formal response from the restaurant regarding this issue and how such errors will be addressed to avoid similar disappointments in the future. I hope that management takes this feedback seriously to ensure a higher standard of service moving forward

Despite being fully booked and ultra busy the service was spot on by the knowledgeable and friendly staff. The food was excellent, we had the sirloin to share. Everything, and I mean *everything*, was flavourful and perfectly cooked. I can't think of any other roast in the city I can say that about. Long time customer of the coal shed over many years. The most recent visits to the new premises have unfortuntley been somewhat lacklustre. Good wines on wine list, however annoyingly some not available (we were told after ordering). Companions steak was not great and we got a refund due to it being gristly and not the best. The kitchen (which is open) had our food sat for over five minutes (we were sat literally opposite) listening to the sounds of service 4 times before collected. Our waiter was a lovely chap who was very apologetic but it was a Tuesday lunch time not on peak and not that busy. It’s lost its sparkle that it used to have and we unfortunatley we have given it numerous tries since its move (maybe been maybe unlucky) but will be using other establishments in the city where it’s not pot luck!

I'd only give it one star, not because the food was bad, but because the whole experience was a bit disappointing. We turned up without a reservation and were offered a table in the bar area, which has small tables but from what I saw they are used to serving Sunday Roast in the area. We ordered a cider and a coke and then it took a while for the food to arrive. While we were waiting, two ladies sat at the next table and one of them decided to paint her nails in the restaurant (nails polish smells horrible in a dining area!). The SR is family-style, so they bring a few dishes to share. When the sirloin came, the runner had no space to put the plate, so I lifted 3 empty bottles off the table. She left the plate and left me with the bottles in my hands, so I had to ask her to please take them away. The other option was to put them on the floor, which is not appropriate. We put the sides on our plates to save space. If you look at the video, you can see that one of the plates was half floating (the table should be 50 cm in diameter tops). I signalled to a waiter to take the empty plate, and he was carrying a glass of sparkling wine that wasn't for me. He accidentally turned it over and ended up wetting my shoulder, breast, arm, hip, leg and the booth where I was sitting. He apologised profusely, and I know he didn't mean to do it, but I was already wet and cold because we were sitting near the door, which was constantly opening to let people in and out. The food got cold while I used a napkin to dry myself. After a while, he came over to tell me he'd taken the drinks (coke and cider) off the bill, which I appreciated, but after ALL that, I wasn't happy. We finished eating because I was hangry, the meat was good, but the sides, even the extra cauliflower, were only ok. So, yesterday, we spent £69.75 for two of us, service and a sparkling bath included.

- Decor feels very nice and lighting intimate - Food was great, very tasty, well presented - Service of food was slow (kids finished their meal) and then we were served! Maybe ok in Wagamama, not what you expect of a fairly upmarket restaurant! - Waitress was amazing (attentive, well mannered and friendly) - Front of house (grumpy as)! We also received one drinks menu between four and when I asked for a kids menu (as we weren't given any) we received a kids desert menu before we had even eaten. Again pretty poor for a restaurant of this calibre! Eating out for me is both the food and service combined. If it wasn’t for the amazing waitress that served the meal and our drinks then it would have been a three star review. I would definitely eat here again as a lively setting and food is very good and well priced, but if the service from front of house is like this again it will be my last visit. Had an amazing meal here last night. 6 of us in total. Everything was delicious and there wasn’t a scrap left on a plate. We had a selection of starters including the tuna tostadas, breads and scallops. Then we had a Delmonico Ribeye and Chateaubriand from the chalk board that were cooked to perfection. Sides were beautifully cooked chips and Caesar salad with one of each of the steak sauces. Staff were super friendly and the atmosphere was brilliant. Would 100% recommend and cannot wait to come back.

Our table was booked for 21:15 to celebrate our anniversary. The table was slightly delayed due to being busy/running behind. We were then seated in a very tight spot whereby my partner was not comfortable as he has staff knocking into him every time they served the tables either side. It was extremely loud and the music made it extra difficult to hear. We were then moved as the staff recognised it was too much of a tight squeeze. We were then seated in front of the kitchen. We did not get our mains until 22:40pm. I had ordered a steak to be cooked at medium. When this arrived, it was blue, we sent this back as it was under cook to what I had requested. I felt immediately uncomfortable as we were sat in front of the kitchen and could see multiple staff, including what I assume is the manager go over to see why it was sent back and who the table was. This really affected the dining experience. Once I received the dish back, I cut into it and saw that it hardly cooked much more. Still blue. I felt I was unable to send it back again after the first experience. Additionally, we had ordered side dishes which were getting cold and my partner trying to hold off eating his meal so we could eat together. When it came to paying the bill, the server recognised that my steak still was not cooked at medium so took half the price off for my steak. The whole experience was very disappointing particularly as we previously dined here at original location so we had high expectations. We were also frustrated and disappointed in their offer to only pay half of my steak considering the prices they charge which did not reflect the value and quality this time round. At a restaurant like this, you don’t expect to return your steak once let alone twice… sadly won’t be dining here again or recommending.

Staff were very welcoming, personable and attentive. Food was sublime and the pre theatre menu was reasonably priced.

Love this new Coal Shed reloaded. Food was always spot on at the old place but we were never comfortable at the venue. This venue is 100% The lighting, decor, flooring, ambience - even the cute little bar with the DJ booth. It all works and the food is outstanding. Drinks and service top notch too. Had dinner and lunch so far. Lunch deal is great value. Sunday lunch left to try!

This was My first meal at the new venue. The steak is absolutely delicious and of the same quality. However ! For some reason, They now feel the need, to cut up, said steak. Which means that the surface area, is massively increased. As a result it is COLD, by the time the meal is finished. Speaking for myself. I learned to use Cutlery from around the age of 4.

Amazing steaks and lovely staff. My steak was absolutely gorgeous . I had text menu which was good value. Staff were really really lovely and the restaurant is really well set out, lovely ambiance and atmosphere. We had a round table which I personally love. Mains took about an hour which was longer than we anticipated as we had theatre at 730 so unfortunately had to rush these but this will probably improve as they find their rhythm. All very nice though thanks.

The decor and atmosphere was great. We sat near the back which I think made it a better visit. The oysters were quite small and a bit disappointing but the rest of the food was yummy. Particularly the scallop, fish and prawn main.

Some time ago myself and my partner booked a slap up meal here. The only thing that he ate that I didn’t were the oysters and later that night he started violently vomiting, this continued for the next 48 hours. I emailed and called the restaurant to report the food poisoning. They were quite rude but promised me that management would be in touch asap, I never received a response. We spent £300 on that experience.

Everything just about perfect, from the staff to the atmosphere to the food. We had the pre-theatre menu which is a really good deal. The serving of the three courses was well paced and we were out of the door at 7pm ready for the 7.30 show at the Theatre Royal just around the corner. My only quibble was the £6 charged for a bottle of Lucky Saint zero alcohol beer, which meant I only had one drink throughout the meal.

Very nice experience. Food was good. Service was slow. Good place if you are not in rush.
