It's great to see investment in North Street, and I was expecting good things from the Black Rock Group. The steaks were lovely, the waitress was attentive, the wine list was pricey, but dinner yesterday evening has to go down as one of the least relaxing dining experiences I've had for a while. The benches along the wall reverberate with every movement from other diners, several of whom were really fidgety. Please get some chairs.

I booked as a treat for my partner and I. It is somewhere I have wanted to try for a while, so I was looking forward to it and I was not disappointed. The welcome was warm as we were escorted to our lovely table, our waiter was straight over and the cocktails were ordered along with the fermented flatbread (a must try) and olives. A delicious taster for what was to come. Our waiter Claudio was attentive but not invasive, I'm a big sharer so we ordered the fillet, seafood bonne femme with 3 sides to share. The steak was perfectly cooked and the flavour of the bonne femme was beautiful. Claudia also helped me find the perfect glass of red to compliment the meal too. The best meal I have had in a while and I am already looking forward to the next time we visit.

Having arranged to meet with family for a birthday lunch, we were warmly welcomed. Our waiter was the best, together with his servers who went over and beyond all they could to attend to our needs. Our food choices did not disappoint, with the sirloin & wagu beef simply to die for and cooked to perfection. The only thing stopping us from rating 5 stars across the board was the noise levels. At times we couldn’t hear ourselves talk even though we were sat in a corner. Will definitely be back though to experience other delights from the amazing menu. 🤗

We had such a special time here for lunch today! Food was incredible, the service from start to finish was top tier putting people first. I was really impressed and felt greatly welcomed. Thank you! Catching up with some friends, this was a real treat, such a great interior and new building, located on a known busy street in Brighton, but as soon as your inside I didn’t feel like I was in central Brighton! It’s got a great calm atmosphere with live DJ Music. Creating such a great hospitality experience. We will be returning Thank you!

Absolutely lovely restaurant in the middle Of Brighton's busiest street but felt very removed and quiet, I had the set menu for Pre theatre as I wanted the sea bass and scalloped potatoes, soft fresh and charred with a buttery sauce. We also had the seared salmons, scallops and if you want a bread you can’t go wrong with their Sourdough.

We were greeted with warm welcome and enjoyed a pre-dinner drink at the friendly bar before being shown to our table in the well designed and atmospheric interior. Choosing from the bountiful a la carte menu, we plumped for the perfectly cooked Wagyu steak and half a rotisserie chicken. Tempted also by the side dishes, we gave in to some crunchy greens, parmesan fries and a delicious portion of mac & cheese. This was accompanied by a lovely Primitivo from the very decent wine list. Service was friendly and attentive ensuring a most enjoyable evening.

Boyce Street was a favourite and booked the new North Street for Husbands birthday. Was worried the atmosphere of the old restaurant would be lost in a bigger venue. Wrong to be worried. This is the most exceptional dining experience. From the moment you arrive, you are well looked after by a team with knowledge and experience and great senses of humour. Service is attentive without being intrusive. The quality of meat is simply superb and is cooked to perfection by Chefs who understand the differences between rare, medium rare and well done. The accompanying sauces, vegetables are excellent. The wine list priced accordingly for a restaurant of this calibre. Their deserts finished off the meal with finesse. It is rare that one departs a restaurant and spends the rest of the evening discussing the excellence of a meal. We recommend this restaurant most strongly. This is not just any steakhouse, this is haute cuisine at its finest. It is not cheap, but you will not find better food in Brighton.

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of dining at The Coal Shed in Brighton with my wife, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Nestled in the heart of the city, this restaurant is a true gem for anyone who appreciates exceptional food and service. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the staff and quickly seated in a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The menu offered a wonderful selection, but it was their renowned steak that caught my eye—and it did not disappoint. By far, it was the best steak I have eaten in quite some time. Cooked to perfection, each bite was a testament to the quality and skill in the kitchen. The sides and starters were equally delightful, complementing the main course beautifully. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, enhancing the dining experience with their friendly and professional service. In summary, I highly recommend a visit to The Coal Shed for anyone in Brighton. Whether you're a local or just passing through, this restaurant promises a memorable meal that is sure to impress. We will certainly be returning for another exceptional dining experience.

The Coal Shed is very impressive. It’s big, but they’ve got it running very smoothly. Think high end east coast American grill restaurant, dark, plush, spacious, wide comfortable seats, low lights shiny surfaces wood trim. Quite noisy and upbeat on Saturday night with a dj spinning the digits, but you settle into it and it’s not intrusive. Service efficient, friendly, relaxed, like they know already what they’re doing, and nothing will be too much trouble. Good range of snacks, starters and mains, yes the meat is still the main event but there are interesting fish options, I suspect veg and vegan less so. We didn’t go raw shells this time but will be back for that, my crab and water melon carpaccio starter was delicate and pretty, one of our party had the take on prawn toasts - delicious and moreish. All the steaks were perfect, I went for turbot with a beetroot salad and both were interesting and perfectly put together. The desserts are mainly at the US style end of things - we had chocs and sweet selection, really good and nice lighter thing. Wine - Really good Muscadet I stuck with until a final glass of the Argie red that my partner had which was also v balanced and worked with steak and choc sweets. Big, sociable, very well run, top notch “grill plus” food; within seconds you have left north street Brighton and you’re in downtown Boston with good taste sophistication.

We ate here on a Sunday at 18 -30. We liked the decor in this spacious restaurant and the fact it was buzzy and busy. Drinks, food and Service were all good. But, and it's a big but, the music when we arrived was not only hideous drum n' bass but it was being played at a deafening level. I couldn't hear our waiter, you could see people leaning across tables to make themselves heard. Four guys next to us were shouting to each other to have a conversation. There's no way we would have tolerated that racket for the length of a meal! We told our waiter how unhappy we were about being deafened and she said other tables had complained. Fortunately some must have listened because the awful music was turned down. It's crazy! A sophisticated restaurant shouldn't have a rave sound track, least of all on a Sunday. People go to a grown-up restaurant to chill! It's not a Shoreditch pizza joint. Anyway do go but if they're still playing an ear bleed sound track, say something.

Although we ordered a 1.3kg shared steak, the wait was over an hour! … and although that is potentially understandable, no one warned us it would be that long. Something to bear in mind. Not cheap but well worth the money if you are prepared to spend. Perhaps the sides (chips etc) could be bigger portions considering the overall price and wait time.

I met up with 2 friends for an epic lunch. We chose the Ridgeview sparkling to start and a range of snacks and starters. My friends don't eat breakfast and were ravenous. The service was friendly and responsive - I requested a banquette seat as we were going to be there a while, and they graciously accommodated my request. The restaurant was heaving yet we could hear ourselves talk and we never felt abandoned. The starters were a mix of vegetarian and meat. Inventive and delicious. Our steaks came as requested and were cooked perfectly. The chips were fabulous but the coal-fired vegetables were a welcome addition. I had a cheese plate which hit the spot and the others went for sweet dishes which they enjoyed. The Sauterne was a great accompaniment to all our desserts/cheese. One of my guests owns a wine auction house and I asked him to review the wine list. He felt the there was a good selection at reasonable prices. We had Chianti Classico (rather than a Bordeaux or Malbec) with the steaks - this restaurant also owns Tutto, a lovely Italian restaurant and we thought that an Italian wine would do us proud here. It did. My pescatarian and vegetarian friends would enjoy a wide range of dishes here as The Coal Shed celebrates a method of cooking rather than just focusing on steak. Steak is their specialty but they are not a 'one trick pony'. Go and enjoy!

Checked out the new location in North Street, still the best steak in the city with a first class service and ambiance, the multi million pound refurbishment shows. The tables however, were very close together, we are talking 12 inches apart which is intrusive with couples sitting either side of you. Not ideal, hence a reduction to 4 stars from my original 5 star review. Bar and DJ were good. Still quite expensive though, budget £150 - £200 for a meal for 2 with wine.

Not cheap, but then you pay for what you get and everything was 10/10, ambience, team, food. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

From the greeting to the farewell (til next time) everything was fabulous! The staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was sublime, I literally want to work my way through the entire menu now. The menu is very comprehensive and I’d be surprised if anyone couldn’t find multiple dishes to enjoy. We are really excited about going back for round two!

I very rarely leave Google reviews but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to rave about my experience at The Coal Shed yesterday. From the get-go, the service was absolutely incredible and the staff were so attentive The decor is absolutely stunning - you could honestly have been transported to a restaurant in Mayfair instead of North Street in Brighton. The attention to detail was just stunning and the lighting was spot on giving our date night the perfect atmosphere. The food was absolutely next level. The chateaubriand was cooked to perfection, the half chicken was the best we've ever had and the mac and cheese was to DIE for. All in all the best dining experience that I have had in Brighton probably ever - I can't wait to return

We booked last minute by phoning and they fitted us in for lunch. Excellent service and the new restaurant is lovely. Food was excellent. We all had steak, but we all thought the best dish was the firecracker cauliflower which was recommended to us. We suggest the chicken side dish is cooked in the same way. And the steaks were excellent too. We will be back

Second visit since recent move to North Street - loved it so much, went back to celebrate my 60th. Great attentive service from all staff , esp Aisha. Food choices always excellent, with every item a delight. We had a booth, so plenty of room on table for all the sides. Yes it’s pricey , but always memorable

Great service and great food! The upgrade to a much larger restaurant has not impacted the service at all - if anything it was even better! Lovely starters and, as always, an amazing steak! Thank you - see you soon x

The food was really great. The new design inside is stunning. I'm looking forward to going again when the roast dinners are on. I will keep an eye out for when, but I think I joined the newsletter. The best chips I've ever had - the thick cut beef fat fried ones. The level of service and the time that the food came was also excellent, and is performing at the standard of a high end restaurant.

I visited The Coal Shed in Brighton in North Street. They’re recently moved from their previous location. Loved the decor in every room as it is slightly different for each section. Food was delicious the best in Brighton. Staff were friendly and very helpful and gave good choices for options that suited us. Will definitely be booking again

I could have gone lower in this, but the steak was very very good. The decor is pleasing and the chairs comfortable. The staff were, on the whole very good too. However, we both ordered an English Garden Salad. Look at the menu, it is very clear what is in each salad. This included, strangely, avocado, fennel and a dressing. Basically Salad leaves and 2 ingredients, not difficult. Had we received this, we would have been happy as that is what we ordered. To be given a small bowl of lettuce leaves with a sliver of radish in was disappointing but we sent it back for what we had ordered. We got the same back again. By now the chateaubriand was going cold and so I stood up to find staff. They took it back. Then we got a 3rd salad and... they had managed to add a little avocado to it but still, not fennel but still with radish. That was bad enough but the attempt to make out that I was stupid and did not know what was seasonal in an English garden? Seriously? Avocados do NOT grow in an English garden but fennel does and it is in season. Why not just offer a different salad? They chose to call it English Garden and then add avocado but frankly, if you have run out of ingredients you TELL the customer, you do not ruin their evening by having to complain 3 times about the side salad. Yes they took the salads off teh bill but really? Too little too late.

A fantastic Sunday afternoon in The Mesmerist! We wandered in and were looked after by the amazing Ava - who was so welcoming, and accommodating - and who also went above and beyond to make an incredible Bloody Mary for my friend! Our roasts were 10/10 delicious. So impressed with everything across the board!
