The Coachman’s bar is situated within the Falcon hotel overlooking the canal side. With plenty of free and paid for parking nearby. The staff were very welcoming, especially Alan who we were pleased to see had added another year to his tenure. The atmosphere was relaxed and service fast & efficient. We didn’t eat on this visit, but the food served to other customers looked yummy. Dog friendly too. Well worth a visit.

Unplanned visit on our first day in Bude. Greeted and made to feel very welcome on arrival, showed to a lovely table with view of water. Dog also made to feel welcome and we were asked if he could have a treat (4 biscuits) which made one happy dog. Attentive but not over the top. I hade the dirty fries which were delicious and my husband had the Buddha bowl which was also good and filling. Service was quick but it was fairly quiet. Good food offers on during the daytimes in the week so pop in and have a look. You won’t be disappointed.

You know something is wrong when you struggle to find an appealing dish on the menu. This place used to be excellent but I'm afraid it's gone downhill. They used to do a fabulous prawn cocktail but it has gone. The starters now are mainly vegetables. There are several fish dishes but hardly anything else. A rump steak, the least desirable of all steaks, priced at £28 is a joke. Most of the lovely dishes they once did are no longer there. Overall it was very disappointing and I would struggle to find a reason to return.

We have been going to to the 'Falcon' now for a number of years for a meal out, but we were not very happy here with our last visit. My wife made a booking by phone for a meal with a friend, but this time instead of just asking for a phone number as confirmation, she was asked to leave her email address and card number. My wife said that she was not comfortable in leaving our card details, but she was told that some people had made block bookings and not turned up, which I can understand would cause problems, but we pointed out that this was just a simple booking for a table for two, which we had made on several other occasions in the past without problems. This produced the reply 'Well I suppose it will be OK' then! When it came to the day of the booking, it so happened that I had booked a table for two with a friend at the 'Brendon' next door, where we found the place to be humming with activity, and Christmas cheer! All the tables were taken! When I came to pick up my wife afterwards in the 'Falcon' I was surprised to find there was a mere handful of people there. The place was uninviting, cold and devoid of any Christmas atmosphere. I asked one of the staff whether there was any heating on, to which he replied, 'I can turn the fire on if you want' I resisted the temptation to say, perhaps you should have done that when you opened up! The only thing worth praising was the quality of the food, which my wife praised (hence my giving this review 3 stars). The bad news is that prices were far more expensive than on previous visits. My understanding was that both the 'Brendon' and the 'Falcon' were under the same ownership, so my making comparisons between the two places would not be inappropriate, for surely if the situation I have described here is typical, it should be of some concern to the owners! I would also mention as an aside, that one of the Christmas attractions in past years has been the Christmas Carols. This has always taken place in the Coachman's Bar on Christmas Eve. Not this year though, it was changed to an outdoor event prior to Christmas Eve, in the so called 'Secret Garden' which of course is a stupid name, because it is no secret to anybody! Anyway, even more stupid, was the idea to hold it outdoors when the weather is either cold or wet or even both, rather than in the warmth of the Bar, with full blown audience participation. When I queried why things had been altered, I was told that because Christmas Eve fell on Sunday, there were Sunday Lunches to be served. I would have thought though, there would have been adequate time after lunch to straighten up the Bar for another event that evening! Ah well! I don't know whether any changes in the management have taken place at the 'Falcon' but suffice to say, my wife and I are going to think long and hard before we ever consider going here again!

Come with my wife and her parents and we wanted to have a Sunday roast so looked around the places and put in a reservation here, The service was very quick and the staff friendly and attentive, the Sunday roast was absolutely fantastic, the portions well worth the money and Yorkshire puddings that are huge, I highly recommend getting the beef, it was thick and delicious and so lean. Excellent value for the quality and size of meal with a lovely selection of vegetables on the side. We will definitely be coming back soon.

We had a couple of fun relaxing evening meals at the Falcon. The staff were welcoming and friendly and attentive throughout our visits. It was great to see Alan again, a long term friend and asset to the business. The food quality was high, portion sizes generous and prices more than reasonable. Visiting musicians added a nice touch to the evening. Dog friendly too in part. Well worth a visit.

Weekend away in Bude, thought we would give this place a try. Although we pre-booked and pre-ordered meals, we had to wait an hour before the food came. Out of the 3 steak meals, two were unacceptable. One steak was so chewy it was inedible and the other was two very small pieces, obviously cut from the end of another steak. Peas not cooked either. Sat for half an hour after the meal, table still hadn't been cleared and waitress didn't bother to ask whether we wanted further drinks. Told the young waitress we weren't happy and she advised the restaurant had recently changed their supplier. So disappointing. Won't be back.

We went on Monday 10th for an early evening meal (6.30) obvs menu changed but were both disappointed the gammon was no longer on the menu- we ordered Fish n chips- batter was very greasy, but fish was fresh, I ordered the special, skate wing, nice meal although not a decent size portion, once bones were removed not a great amount of fish. My reason for the 2 score quite simply ‘barking dogs’ even heard the waiter say were full of them tonight. 6 dogs from small to large. Had the Hotel receptionist mentioned they were overly dog friendly we would not have booked earlier in the day. I quite frankly do not want to eat near barking wet smelly dogs!

Avoid if you want nice food. We went here after recommendation from a local. Upon trying to order food to sit outside. We had to ask for permission from the hostess at the podium. Bar staff wouldn’t take the order. Despite having already been given the menus from the hostess. The whole system seemed backwards and weird. I can only imagine she was gauging how busy it was before allowing people to sit outside to eat. When we eventually ordered. The ribs came out stone cold. Had to send them back. The chips were tasteless. When the new ribs came out. They were also tasteless and fatty. I had the fish curry which was ok. Nothing to shout about. We definitely won’t be returning. Several others sent food back whilst we were there. Sorry to moan.

Came for Sunday lunch with the family. A revisit as we enjoyed a meal the week prior. Sunday lunch was lovely but unfortunately I was served alcohol when ordering the aperol 0%. This is unacceptable especially as it’s a medical reason why I can not consume alcohol. The waiter who took the order was very apologetic but I don’t think he was to blame as he read our order back to us prior. The lady who delivered the drinks however was frosty when I asked after taking a sip, if it was the alcoholic version. Her reply was that it was that aperol is an alcoholic drink…which I know that’s why we ordered the virgin drink. I think there is a miscommunication between bar staff and a lack of knowledge of what is sold. Will not be returning or recommending which is a shame.

Pre booked for dinner on Sunday night and were sat in the Brasserie next door. Never have I had such a disappointing meal. After eating fresh, locally sourced fish and meat for the last 2 days, this was just horrible. My partner had fish and chips, which was the kind of quality you would find in any low-rate pub. Fish tasted like it had been brought in frozen. the batter was thick and smooth rather than light and fluffy. He ate his because he was hungry. I ordered ribs- bug mistake. Firstly, they came out and it was clear they hadn't been cooked in the marinade, as the end ribs on both sides were bare, the underside was bare and the sauce barely covered the meat. The meat was grey and broiled to death to get the "fall off the bone" consistency. There was a weird thick spice rub that had been smeared on top but not cooked out, so all I got was oily powdery cumin in my mouth. The bbq marinade was weak and also not cooked out, so sat on top of the meat with no char or caremalisation. The waitress was kind enough to be embarrassed, suggested they weren't normally like that (doubtful) and offered something else, however the menu is so pub basic, I didn't actually want anything else. Given this place is in the middle of some beautiful farms and local fishing villages, I don't understand why there isn't more seafood or fish on the menu. We didn't come all the way to Cornwall to eat what was essentially pub-chain quality grub. Also, 2 waitresses and a chef came out to "present" our dinner when the plates came out? That was weirdly formal, uncomfortable and reminded me of an old 70's cheesy restaurant. Yes we had the ribs taken off the bill, yes the waitress apologised. Doesn't make up for the terribly disappointing meal

We booked a table in here for a Saturday night to celebrate a birthday. We chose to sit in the bar rather than the restaurant as it looked a little more relaxed but the menu is the same in both areas. This area is also dog friendly if you need it. We ordered drinks at the bar rather than the table but this was our choice as the staff are happy to get your drinks for you. There is a small corner with a couple of sofas if you just want a drink but this is more of a waiting area for your table as the place its more foodie than just drinks. Although a little early were were shown to our table and after a few minutes the waitress came and took our orders. We didn't wait too long before our food came. We all chose different things, caesar salad with chicken, fish pie, beef and mushroom pie (on the specials menu) and a pizza. All were absolutely lovely and all our plates were cleared. Once we finished our meal we asked for the bil, and paid at the bar. The staff gere are very friendly and helpful and with a nice relaxed atmosphere its a great place for a meal.

We came here after we were recommended by the Brendon Arms as they were completely full. It does clearly say non-residence welcome as this restaurant is part of the Falcon Hotel. We’re very glad we came here to eat, the staff were friendly, the hotel was lovely, very chic. The menu was decent and caters for most people’s tastes. It’s also very reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend coming here. It also has free parking for patrons opposite, which means you can avoid paying for your parking ticket at the local car park.

Booked a table for Friday evening 24th of February. The Hotel looks great and has been turned into a lovely premises, but that is where it ends. Firstly the staff were very good and hard working. Our one main coarse of Lamb shank was so dry that you needed a pneumatic drill to eat it and was tasteless. My Pork ribs were so bland and barely warm. The chef needs to go back to school and learn how to cook and the management need to maybe try a blind dining experience to see how awful it is. We live locally but will never set foot in here again. NOPE. One was still stone cold and the other barely warm.Seriously, how difficult is it?!Don't blame this on Covid19, it's purely dreadful customer service and lack of attention by the kitchen staff. We did receive a warm welcome and enjoyed a nice seat outside looking over the canal as we didn’t want to sit indoors. Initially the service was good but once food had been served we were ignored and despite trying to catch staff on the way past to order more drinks and then deserts we gave up in the end and when we finally managed to catch someone we just asked for our bill which took some time to arrive. We were told we could only order pizza from the menu as we were seated outside but when these came the tomato base tasted like cheap shop bought tomato purée and it ruined the favour of the pizza. We ordered a drink with our food and the Aperol spritz requested was mainly lemonade with a shot of Aperol, which came at a ridiculous cost of £7.50. It was a shame these points let the place down as generally a nice location and the staff seemed friendly.

This was our second visit to the Coachman’s bar as we had eaten there last year on our annual trip to Bude and unfortunately it wasn’t as good as before. We’d booked our table as we know it can be busy without a pandemic and the greeting on arrival was warm and we were quickly shown to our table. Signs said we had to wear our masks when entering but it wasn’t clear if we had to wear them when moving around the restaurant and it would’ve been nice to have had this explained to us just so we knew that we were following guidelines. The menu is definitely smaller than on the previous visit which we had noticed everywhere we went which wasn’t a problem as we appreciated that all venues are having to make changes and so orders were made and we sat back with anticipation. Starters arrived quickly and were deemed to be good all round - we shared the pate and the creamy mushrooms between 3 of us which was just enough. Then we waited for the mains and kept waiting. It was just under 40 minutes before they arrived which after the speed of the starters was a slight surprise as it didn’t seem that busy in the bar. Two of the party had burgers and chips and the other had fish and chips. These were not as good as the starters as the chips were half cooked and half not and the burgers were definitely on the well done side - hubby left half of his as it was just not nice. We were only approached about the mains when we had finished and by this point it’s too late to do anything about them and it wasn’t easy to catch anyone’s eye to say something. We didn’t have pudding but just the bill which took a while to arrive and even longer to pay. We all appreciated that things are slightly harder at the moment due to the pandemic but it felt as though no one was interested in serving us and other places in Bude seem to be handling the change in circumstances better than here. It’s a shame as it was lovely on our previous visit. Definitely one to make your own mind up over as one of the other rooms where we were staying said they’d really enjoyed it so possibly just unlucky on our side.

Initially, the restaurant supervisor said that the chef had had a look and it was fine. Do we want it back? No! Was our reply. We asked for a new one. When this arrived we were told that if we weren’t happy with this one then the chef will come out to talk to us!!!! The elder guests felt very threatened and tbh so did I. Called in here for a few drinks whilst visiting the area for a weekend. The drinks were reasonably priced, the surroundings were very nice and the bar staff were all very pleasant and helpful, but during the evening it got very cold with 3 sets of doors and two windows open on a rainy windy evening, so we closed the door to the bar. Shortly afterwards a staff member walked through and wedged the door open again, still leaving two sets of doors to the front, also open. I do think that customers comfort should be taken into consideration, especially as we had already told two staff members that it was very cold and 6 other customers agreed with us.

The staff at The Coachman's could not have been more accommodating. The manager, Amanda, moved tables around and nothing was too much bother. The food came speedily and was delicious. Our fussy primary school aged diners said that the chicken was the best that they had ever tasted! All in all, a great place to dine. A special mention must go to manager Amanda and our lovely waiter Zac who was exceptional. I must also mention the barman (I don't know his name) who was brilliant with the children and generally answering all out queries about the menu. It was only his 2nd day on the job.

We visited with high expectations but left disappointed, we wouldn’t return. We ordered just main courses as options for “light bites” which appeared to be the only started were limited. The food was OK, but nothing special. I ordered a Thai Fish Curry, described as coming with sticky rice. It wasn’t, it was a mix of white and wild rice, nice enough but not sticky Thai rice. The only thing sticky was the table. My husband had a burger, which was nothing special, and expensive for what it was. Such a shame, it looked lovely from the outside, but Bude has much better places to eat.

Was a little on the chilly side to sit outside as shaded in the evening so we asked for an inside table. Very polite service by all staff that attended on us. Served Tribute ale which suited me fine. Enjoyed my rainbow trout.

We have eaten here several times, the food is always of a good standard, apparently my partner informs me the steaks are always amazing. However for a vegetarian the menu is SO limited, literally two choices, unless you want a salad. On the specials list, no vegetarian option which was disappointing/shocking. I had the stuffed peppers and literally that's what you get two halves with a side salad, not exactly that exciting, although it was nice. The staff are always helpful and friendly, it can be very busy so sometimes it can take a while to get served. I have no problem recommending but PLEASE do something about your range of options!

The setting is in a great place and inside is very busy, we were welcomed though without a reservation on a Saturday evening and the staff were very helpful and friendly. However after waiting 30 minutes to receive our drinks order and the menus were feeling a bit apprehensive about the service. Had to attract the waitress attention who then had to chase up drinks and another waiter to take our order. Food when it arrived was well presented however our part plus another table that had fish and chips were left disappointed with the food, the fish batter was quite greasy maybe because of the late time of the order. Drinks when they arrived the apple juice was so watered down it didn’t taste of any apple. It was exchanged quickly with explanation that it was not from a bottle but pump, bit surprised to get charged for both at the end but staff were very helpful in resolving this problem. Maybe a visit in a not so busy bank holiday evening would be better.

I would advise anyone to book a table because this is so popular , My daughter and I went for Sunday lunch, I had the roast lamb and my daughter had the roast beef, the meat was succulent and very tasty, it came with a least four different veg, and extra veg in dish, mine came with lamb gravy and the beef came with beef gravy. it was absolutely delicious and believe it or not it costs £11 a meal, will be going back

We rang to book a table for mothers day on the Saturday before, being away from home we went on a locals recommendation. Although they were fully booked they made space for us at an earlier time. The staff were friendly and had great customer service throughout the phone call and the whole time we were on the premises. The atmosphere was friendly and the roast dinners were the best we have had out in a very long time. Portion size, food temperature and presentation and variety of veg was exceptional. Will definitely be looking at going back and am very keen to.see the hotel as well.

Booked a family meal for a special birthday. We weren't shown to our table, it was just pointed out to us. We weren't given menus or a drinks order taken for at least 20 minutes. One of our party tried to order drinks at the bar, but was told to sit down as someone would come over to take our drinks order. No-one came, so we stopped a passing waitress to ask, but was told someone would be over soon. Another 20 minutes and we finally had drinks. I ordered sea bream with saute potatoes, but it arrived with boiled, glazed new potatoes. When I questioned this I was told they were saute potatoes (I've never seen any like that before). We were in the bar area which was overrun with people from big Christmas parties standing by the bar. They surrounded our table and the noise level was too much. We booked an early table as we had young children in the party, but we ended up being there later than expected as service was so slow. My family had taken a birthday cake to the restaurant, but decided against bringing it out as the atmosphere just wasn't right. Despite saying it was for a special birthday when the booking was made, and with an obvious table decoration, none of the staff mentioned it or made it feel like a special occasion. Sadly it will be the last time we eat there, especially having found a better restaurant in Bude.

We had occasion to visit Bude for an evening meal. Our original restaurant choice was closed so we decided to try the bar in the nearby Falcon Hotel. We were massively impressed with our choice. There is parking at the hotel, which abutts a picturesque canal walk, and a pay and display car park too which is free at off peak times. The hotel itself is very attractive being a period building with plenty of seating inside and out. There is a good range of drinks at the bar including continental and local beers. We took a seat in the dining area to study the menu and were immediately attended by very courteous and welcoming staff. Our starter consisted of spicy parsnip soup (served with a generous portion of bread) and a very flavoursome terrine. Flavours were exquisite. Main courses selected were poached salmon and a stack burger. The poached salmon was enormous and flavoured with a coconut sauce and served on a healthy bed of green vegetables. Excellent as a choice for a diner being careful over calorie intake. The stack burger was tall, contained excellent meat and was served with tasty crisp fries and a piquant sauce. What a meal! We were too full for a dessert but will certainly be returning to this restaurant again.

Gave this an "average" rating but it only just escaped from being "poor". Went at lunchtime today (12th December) as two couples having reserved a table for 1pm. Initial impression was good as the room was warm, décor was good and general ambience was fine. After that it was all downhill even though the restaurant was less than half-full. We opted for a main course and desert but had to wait nearly 45 mins for our main course to arrive. Two of our party were vegetarians but apart from fish there were only two options on the menu. One of the choices was based on goats cheese so the two vegetarians ordered that. After about 10 mins the waitress came back to say that they didn't have any goats cheese so that left one option which both chose. This cost £11.95 and consisted of two halves of a pepper with filling - chickpea and dressing in one half and something else in the other. There were also 3 small pieces of carrot added for decoration and some dressing/sauce. The other two people ordered Cod, Chips & Peas and a Steak & Ale pie. These were fine and actually cost less than the veggie option. The deserts chosen were a ice-cream based desert with a large meringue on top (that needed an extra plate so that it could safely be eaten), a raspberry trifle with clotted cream on top. Fine, except that the trifle had the consistency of a concrete-mix! The other two people had a bread & butter pudding. Not a good choice as it was slab-like in consistency, hardly any fruit and the presence of butter was debateable. We had a bottle of red wine (Chilean Sauvignon) that cost £16.50. This was fine and was served at room temperature. We had to wait so long for the main course and a longer than reasonable wait for the deserts that we took the precaution of asking for the bill even before the deserts arrived! Not once did any of the waitresses ask us or anyone else (as far as we could see) if everything was OK and we even had to borrow condiments from the next table as we didn't have any. Next to this restaurant is the Brendon Arms which seems to be part of this hotel. Have been there several times and would unreservedly recommend it. Return to the Coachman's Bar & Grill again I don't think so!

Have delivered here numerous times whilst working for a previous employer, but due to the fact that it is 1 and 1/2 hours away from my home, I have never eaten here until this weekend just gone. We happened to be in Bude for a family birthday on Saturday and decided to go for a meal before setting off. As it was " between times," after 3.00 and before 6.00, we were limited to our choice of venue, then I remembered that they do food all day here.

We made the Falcon or Coachmans Bar our "local" whilst we were staying in Bude, this is partly due to the wonderful location, overlooking the Bude Canal, the lovely shady terrace and the staff, and, most notably the food, which, when you take into account they were trying to run things from a temporary kitchen as they were undergoing a refurbishment was an achievement in itself. One member of staff, Alan, who, as front of house, meeter and greeter made us feel so welcome and as if we had been going for years, made us want to retun, in fact we ate /drank here 4 times during our short stay and one occasion called in for morning coffee and a "nightcap" All the staff were very attentive and friendly, the food was excellent (you must try the truffle and parmesan chips they are devine) various salads and fish pie excellent, as for puds, the black cherry and white chocolate cheesecake was amazing. If you head down early doors on Fridays between 5 and 7 pm they have a promotion on fizz where you can try a range of excellent cornish/english champagnes at a discounted rate. They also have live entertainment on Friday/Saturday nights, the amosphere is very relaxing, and all the while the Brendon Arms next door looked qually as busy. If you are ever in Bude give this place a go you are sure of a warm welcome.

We attempted to book a table for Sunday lunch at the pub next door, the Brendon Arms which is also owned by the same family who own the Falcon Hotel and Coachman's Bar, only to find that it was fully booked. We decided we would try next door and booked a table at the Coachman's Bar, but as it was also pretty popular, our table was only available from 1.45pm. We arrived promptly and ordered a drink before going to our table and ordered our food at the bar. I don't know if this was necessary as a very nice lady came over to ask us if we had ordered a few minutes later. We both ordered Sunday lunch, one beef for £11 and a pork for £10.50. They both came out on large square plates accompanied by an oval dish of vegetables including red cabbage, whole baby carrots, broccoli, cabbage and peas. However, on each plate we also had Roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese. The beef also had Yorkshire pudding and pork had stuffing. They were served with gravy but we also had a separate gravy boat and horseradish sauce and apple sauce. The food was absolutely delicious and my other half said it was the best Sunday lunch he had ever eaten! I have to agree that it was pretty special and a fitting end to our four days in Bude. We will be back!
