I am one of four retired men who enjoy regular cross-country hikes. Last Thursday, we started and finished our latest 7-mile trek at the Coach & Horses in Compton, a small town (population 450 approx.), so we were pleasantly surprised to discover this highly civilised pub in the town square. The pub is carefully decorated and provides patrons with a modern setting that manages to create a traditional ambience. Needless to say, the pub offers a splendid selection of beverages. What does need to be said is that the pub also provides a short but appetising menu of simple but professionally crafted dishes. The food is really good. Three of us had cheeseburgers and another had fish and chips. I am fussy about burgers because, so often, they are little more than default options, but the Coach & Horses delivered freshly cooked and highly satisfying fare. Oh, and I'd recommend the apple pie! And, you won't be surprised to hear that the service is friendly and quietly efficient. Believe me, the Coach & Horses is a jewel in the West Sussex countryside.

We were warmly welcomed by the hosts on arrival and invited to choose to remain in the bar or to go straight to our table. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and well presented. Our food was delicious and I would recommend the soup of the day! All in all a most enjoyable couple of hours. We will certainly be returning to this lovely pub.

So happy to have discovered this lovely spot in Compton, which is perfect for walking the dogs before a super cosy and delicious lunch by the fireside. There was another table with younger family, and I noticed that the staff gave special drinks for the children in these little bird-shaped cups. We will definitely be back as it’s a warm genuine place. Also, the food is traditional but with a modern twist. Everything perfect. Definitely recommend.

Arrived excited and expecting great things having looked up best pub cuisine, unfortunately we didn’t get to experience the food. After a less than friendly “yes you’re over there” pointing at our table we waited 20mins before I went to the bar and requested menus, at first I was given two, and then looking over to our party of five, I was handed two more. I asked if we could order some drinks and received the reply, “yes when I’ve finished this order first”. I returned to our table. We looked at the menus, £26 for roast chicken!, and after half an hour of no service, not even a friendly “hello, we’ll be with you shortly”, and then witnessing a table of four sending back their meals, we got up to leave. The man from the bar then approached our table and looked surprised, I assured him we could see he was busy and we’d be leaving. He replied, “we’re a bit short staffed”, no kidding!

We dined at Coach and Horses on Easter Sunday and wow. What a wonderful transformation! The decor is true English country pub with a touch of quality. Lesley, our server, was very attentive and made sure we were okay throughout our stay. The food was delightful. Even the feel of the menus was a pleasant surprise. I bumped into the Head Chef and you can just tell that everyone that worked here wanted to make sure you left with a smile on your face. Highly recommend over many of the local pubs in the area. Experience was on par with the Farmer, Butcher, Chef restaurant at Goodwood! Support this local pub if you can, you’ll definitely be left wanting to come back.

There's always a warm welcome in the Coach and Horses. Compton is an attractive village and, on a warm day, you can sit outside facing the village square but it's cosy inside in the winter too. There's a good range of ales and the food is highly recommended. It's a favourite haunt!

We've always enjoyed our visits here, but were very impressed today with the new look of the restaurant. There is still a lounge bar as well for those who wish to drink but not eat. My husband had the Sunday roast (beef) and sticky toffee pudding, and I had squash and peanut butter stew with flatbread, then lemon meringue creme brulée. (I'm not vegetarian, I just liked the look of the 'stew', but it was excellent.) I also had a very pleasant glass of rosé. The staff were very welcoming and took our orders promptly. It wasn't too crowded and I really enjoyed it. We'll be back.

We have visited this pub many times in the last 25 years for both meals and drinks. We were pleasantly surprised by the recent renovations which have totally transformed the pub. The decor is modern but totally in keeping with the building which has kept many of it's original features including the fireplaces. A great evening and we will definitely be back. Thanks again.

Had a lovely meal at this recently renovated pub in the middle of Compton village. My brother has lived in the village many years and I've always understood that they never went because it wasn't particularly welcoming so was surprised when they said they had booked a table there for a family meal. It's been beautifully renovated inside, a bar area which will be opened when they are allowed and a restaurant - both modern but in keeping with the age of the pub and warm and welcoming. Lesley greeted us at the door and was very welcoming and attentive, taking our order efficiently and ensuring we had everything we needed. Dave provided us with our drinks and made sure we were topped up. Paul ensured everything was running smoothly. There were 10 cyclists sitting outside having meals ready for their ride home. The food was tasty, and great value for money and I would highly recommend a visit. I encourage you book a table and support this business.

We booked this stay a year ago, for a wedding event which was cancelled due to Covid. We decided to keep the booking open & are very glad we did! Paul & Dave gave us a very warm welcome. We arrived early had a super lunch outside &, as our room was ready, we were able to check in after this. Lovely room, with great attention to detail & all Covid safe. Dave gave us info on local walks & we headed off to Telegraph Hill. Stunning scenery & lovely walk. We ate in the restaurant that evening, both meals delicious (pork belly for me & beef brisket for hubby). Lovely brekkie in the morning, so good, we couldn't fit in the toast! Unfortunately we had a flat tyre, again Paul & Dave went out of their way to help whilst we waited for the AA, plying us with coffee & Info on the history of the building & their renovations. Thanks for a great stay in a beautiful part of the country.

We visited this place on a Wednesday lunch time, it was cold, the barman only lit the fire at the other end of the bar 10 minutes after we had sat down. The food was poor. My wife and I had two "plastic" baguettes that were poorly filled, with a few crisps and no salad at all. My mother had scampi and chips with the latter being overcooked or reheated and they were almost inedible. We shall certainly not be gracing this establishment with our presence again.

Owners away. Stopped here last year and it was dire. New owners have done a fantastic job of resurrection. Unfortunately they were away when we visited yesterday. Ale was warmish, being English I can put up with that, however my wife ordered a salad only to be told the fridge had gone down and there was no salad. Opted instead for the ploughman’s - same excuse! Unfortunately every other thing on the menu comes with chips - frozen chips at that! Opted in the end for scampi (left the chips). I had the sirloin steak - no problem, except the price - £19! Probably leave it another year before we call again.

The Coach & Horses is a traditional country pub in the lovely village of Compton. We were staying for a week in a nearby cottage with our cockapoo, Henry, and were so impressed with our first meal of fish & chips (with skin on or off!) that we became regular visitors during our stay. We, invariably, received a warm welcome from the owners and staff and Henry was well fussed over by all and sundry. What really makes the pub exceptional is the quality of the food. Over the course of the week we tried several items from the menu and each meal was excellent. Particular favourites were the liver, lamb rump, veal, fish, pasta and avocado bake ... would have liked to sample more if we had stayed longer. The owner/chef even went to the length of preparing a salmon dish not on the menu for my wife's elderly mother. Hope to return some day in the near future.

We were staying in a farm in Compton in our motor home on Saturday June 27th, and walked to the village pub, The Coach & Horses with our two dogs. We sat outside and waited for the pub to open that evening, which it did around 6.30ish. I went in and the pub was dark & gloomy with a horrible musty smell ! The landlord was not very welcoming, but I ordered a drink for my partner & I. My partner nearly spat his pint of larger out as it tasted foul and of chemicals. I went in to the landlord to complain, there was no apology and he said the regulars were ok with the larger ! He gave me a different variety and it was the same taste ! Again, no apology and I asked for a bottled larger this time. I also asked for water for our two dogs outside. A few minutes later he came outside and told us that we needed tickets to sit outside the pub as there was the Compton Square dance going on outside the pub, in other words, we had to leave, and he promptly threw away our dogs water !!! We were thinking before all this happened that we would make an evening of it and watch the dancing, have a few drinks and a meal, but no way after that treatment ! We wont ever go back into that pub and a local man told us that the landlord has run the pub for 30 years and he has always been like that & has become very complacent ! He is a very rude man & should not be in the hospitality trade !!!

The Coach and Horses was our mid-point on a country walk (the Rowlands Castle Circular (Saturday Walkers Club)), so we were pretty hungry by the time we got there. The baked avocado and spinach, followed by Belgian Waffle with chocolate sauce and ice cream, didn't disappoint: hearty pub fare with no frills. The (locally-brewed) American Pale Ale that washed it down was well kept and flavoursome. There are no pretensions here: just a solid country pub with friendly staff serving wholesome fare.

We visited today with our five year old daughter, the staff were helpful and welcoming. We asked for a children's menu and were told they don't cater for children. It was freezing cold even though they had two fires on the go, the decor was horrendous, the whole place needed a good clean and modernising. The food when it eventually arrived was possibly one of the worst meals we have ever had, would not recommend and will not be returning.

I ate here with friends one evening and everyone commented on how cold it was in the pub. Why won't the landlord light one of the fires, or put some heating on? It has to be one of the most unwelcoming pubs in the Area. The food wasn't that good either. The owner of this pub doesn't deserve to have a business. So mean!!

My wife and I visited for lunch today - Tues 5th Aug. Parking is a bit limited, access is on the side of the building. The main bar is a trip back in time, plenty of memorabilia from the past but updating is overdue. Particularly with wiring, sockets and lighting. It's also well over 30 years since I last saw what I believe is an original 'Bar-Billiards table but clutter underneath does its history no favours. The menu is limited to what's advertised on small individual blackboards in the bar. Main dish prices are about right for the area but it's worth noting the cost of their sweets - disproportionately expensive. My wife chose the home cooked ham, salad and new potatoes, I had the home made chicken, mushroom and tarragon pie, chips and vegetables. Both dishes tasted superb. However, a bottle (1/2 pint) of non alcoholic beer at £3 is ridiculous. The Gents loo is old and much in need of decoration but the state of cleanliness within the 'trough' is a disgrace. Residual urine in it with no deodorising blocks is not acceptable by today's standards. Conclusion:Apart from the food, this is not a place I would recommend to other travellers..Recommendations to the Owner/Tenant/Manager, clean the gents loo and remove clutter from under billiards table and in corridor to gents and garden.1 * for the food and 1 * for the service.

We went to the Potager restaurant last night. It was Locals Night. The menu was imaginative and the food delicious and well presented. The atmosphere and service was dood too. The Locals Night is excellent value and we would highly recommend

Gemma and her team from Tiffins of Petworth provided the catering for my mum's 8oth birthday party in the garden. I could not be happier with the service they provided. The food was superb, delicious and beautifully presented, they were relaxed, friendly and well organised and the whole service was reasonably priced. They went to so much effort to make everything as easy and stress free for us and really were a highlight of the day. They exceeded our expectations and I highly recommend them. The Cafe is also lovely and has the same level of care, service and delicious food. A real asset to Petworth.

Visited here for afternoon tea. Welcome was ok, but then we waited for a while to see if there was a free table. Bizarrely no one else was in the cafe and the upstairs service where we were seated was almost unfriendly and you felt you were in the way. When we asked for a spoon for our tea we were greeted with a huff and puff… Gets good reviews elsewhere, but sadly not from us..

My wife’s aunt and cousin enthused about this pub so we decided to have lunch with them on a Thursday in November. The pub is signposted from the main road and is down a narrow lane to Chidham with passing places at intervals. The car park at the back is not so large so many visitors seem to park in the village. Virtually every table was taken which is always a good sign for mid week dining. The four of us had a variety off of dishes and my seafood tagliatelle was delicious. We were very impressed with the speed of service from the two lovely ladies and lively atmosphere of the pub. The portions are quite large so if you have a smaller appetite we would recommend their small portion menu. My wife’s cousin recommended the mussels which were not on the menu the day we visited so we must return to try them. A very enjoyable lunch catching up with old friends too.

Chef Ravi rose magnificently to the curry challenge! I managed to down about half my venison and prawn curries, served with rice and condiments, but luckily my companion finished his grilled skewer and demolished the rest. Terrific to have authentic Indian food available in Graffham (on special request). Bravo to the the White Horse for extending its excellent range.
