We have been here a few times for the carvery in the past and it was always ok. We had heard it had changed management and had gone downhill but we thought we would give it a try. The person serving us was a decent lad and was very polite. He seemed to be the only one on duty as he took a while to get round. My wife and I ordered the pepper sauce chicken. I asked what it came with and was told veg. He then said he would put a few chips on if we liked and we agreed. When it came it was underwhelming to say the least. The breast was beaten flat with slightly watery pepper sauce. Overcooked cabbage and carrots and nothing else on the plate. The side order of chips followed. I'm unsure whether we were charged for the chips as my wife paid the bill. The food we ordered was £12 per person. I get that it is not particularly expensive, but for what we were served it absolutely was. Presentation was poor and it just looked unappetising. I doubt we'll be back. Unless we hear of big improvement

We came for Sunday's dinner, ordered quickly, drinks came quickly. But then we had an hour and 15 minutes wait for food. We complained half way through this as mix ups do happen, but service was still slow. 4 others tables were served food despite ordering after us, a couple of them had desserts and left in that time. We have a 2 year old and a 3 month year old waiting patiently the whole time. Eventually we left without food, the staff said there was a mix up, but even then there could have been some updates, communication, a free snack or something. Just really poor and disappointing service. We were very polite and patient, but there is a limit to when a restaurant is jist being ignorant. Can't comment on the food, looked nice from a distance watching other people eat.

When I arrived I felt quite confident in the social distancing measures. We ordered a carvery meal and as per notice we followed the one family at a time for service at the carvery. Sadly only the first 3 groups managed this and as we are we had a queue beside our table with a mix of masked, masks half on half off and no masked people queuing next to our table. Non of the staff attempted to enforce their own rules and I felt very uncomfortable. It's a shame that the staff took no effort to keep the restaurant covid safe. I can suggest two things immediately. One. Tell customers the one family rule when they order the carvery. Two give customers numbers which can then be called to service.I will not be back and it has been a family favourite for years. Shame

Been coming here for months and the food was outstanding. But the last 2/3 weeks it has been horrendous the carvery is all dried up and the beef had a taste of its own tasted like jelly even the peppered beef pie that I rave on about to everyone that I’ve never tasted better was inedible. Although we never go anywhere else for food we will not be back

We had to go and find someone to come to serve us from the carvery. The beef and turkey we had were cooked well. However, the mushy peas were grey, when we mentioned the fact the assistant just turned them over and mixed them up, they turned green. The cabbage was tasteless, was worse than school cabbage and the carrots had been 'burned' dry by the heat lamps. The yorkshires were burnt at least somewhere, luckily the assistant allowed us to chose the ones we wanted. Overall, worth the 1/2 price meal but wouldn't pay normal price for it.

I wholeheartedly agree with the comments made by the latest reviewers. The vegetable choices consisted of anaemic cabbage, 3 styles of potato, tasteless mushy peas, boiled carrots complemented with cold gravy. The meat choices of turkey and beef were fine as were the Yorkshire puddings. A dollop of horseradish at least gave some taste to the meal. We won't be returning.

Having frequented this establishment for over 15 years to date, we have finally drawn the curtain on this eatery. Initially the carvery was well stocked with a decent range of vegetables and truly signature roast beef and stock gravy, all piping hot and mouth-wateringly good. Unfortunately, it has now descended into a bland offering of poorly matched items, bordering on anaemic in appearance, and now tepid to the palette. The sprouts and green vegetables are gone, in place of white cabbage, 3 derivatives of potato, dried out mushy peas and carrots along with an empty tray of what appeared to have been leak gravy. The Yorkshire’s were cold, and the final downfall, was that the gravy, previously a signature element, was so tepid it had turned to sludge. The beef remained cooked to perfection, but was ultimately ruined by the cold accompaniments, above which it had for a long time stood proud. I cannot understand why the proprietor persists in not utilising the hot plates for their intended purpose, nor an apparent unwillingness to ensure the gravy is piping hot at all times. Today the plates were heated, but I came in for food to steady my hunger, not ceramics or porcelain!!Very disappointing, but simply indicative of many once hearty establishments, that do not place credence on maintaining standards.

We go to the carvery quit often as it’s on our way home from shopping. I’m not to keen however my partner likes their roast beef. Today’s helping of roast beef consisted of 2 tiny wafer thin slivers. I’m not a greed person and never pile my plate high as some do so the meat usually fills me but not today as I was still hungry as was my partner. Next time I will complain and so should others. The vegetables don’t cost much so we’re should expect to receive a decent helping of meat. I’d love to see the chefs face if he got that on his plate! .

Came with family for a birthday celebration. Decided against carvery as it looked dried out. Unfortunately, my medium steak was very well done and quite tough as was my son in laws. My mushrooms were also dried out. Granted staff did offer to replace my steak but I declined. We then bought dessert, the custard was lumpy and the cheesecake stodgy with a thick indigestible base. Overall we were not impressed and will not return.

However, there was a few issues.Me and my husband and went for the carvery, and I was disappointed to say the least. You are given a slither of meat, its a very very small amount. The vegetables provided are limited also. Choice of potato, carrot, cabbage and leek gravy. The carrots weren't even peeled. Not nice in all honestly. Thank goodness I could fill up on potato. As I stated before the staff were friendly, but sour taste was left when I said goodbye to the waitress and I was ignored. All in all, not a good meal and I don't think I'll be returning.

Visited for the Sunday Lunch carvery. The good points.Bar staff friendly and we got a table fairly easily as we were there before it opened. We have had very good meals here over the years but on this visit we were disappointed. The chef who carved the meat must have been told to give smaller portions. For the large carvery I got 2 very thin small cuts of meat and my dad who had the small carvery had the smallest amount of gammon that was possible to cut, a few scraps. There seemed to be a lot fewer vegetables on offer this visit. The customer behind us in the que had ordered mash potato separate and I noticed a few others did this as well....The food was just warm even though we were one of the first to go through. We have in the past, always come away very satisfied with our meal both the quantity and the quality but not this time. Will have second thoughts about going back.

The chef had cleared the carvery and closed it. So no carvery. We tried to chose two other meals from the menu, only to be told that they did not have food in stock! My question is why was the restaurant, "open" when obviously they had no intentions of serving food. Quite disappointing.

Was there last night about 6-30 for the carvery meal. The young chef who calves the meat . His trousers were filthy the bottoms were torn and trailing on the floor covered in dirt. His trainers well I’ve yet to see another pair as dirty. The white around the bottom plus the toes were absolutely black rotten with caked dirt which a wipe with a floor cloth wood have cured. No excuses surely the one in charge must have noticed it, didn’t just happen on that one day. There was another chef came out of the kitchen with what I suppose to be a white top and black trousers absolutely covered in dirt, and again his trainers were filthy. I don’t dare to think what the floor was like in the kitchen . Now the food. The meat was lovely roasted potato’s were gorgeous cabbage carrots and gravy good. Yorkshire puddings were old peas dried out. Everything was warm. Dining room conservatory definitely needs updating and the chairs need a good scrub they were filthy at the bottom and I’m not nitpicking there was eyesight in it . The entrance was old and dirty no wonder the place was empty all but a few in the bar area. To me it definitely needs a hygiene check immediately there must be issues in the kitchen if the staff are looking as dirty as they were, cleanliness speaks volumes . I was starving and ate some of it but today I’m burping eggs which means an upset tummy. Please someone go and check out the hygiene before someone is really ill.

First visit to this pub on the A167. We fancied Sunday lunch so called in around 1.15pm on spec. No problems getting a table in the bar (a bit draughty) but the tables in the conservatory were either reserved or occupied (nice and warm). Busy pub however efficient staff make it look easy. The carvery price was very reasonable but the Carvery itself was unimpressive. 3 meats with the Beef outstanding..I have seldom tasted better. Sad that, in general, the vegetables on offer let the side down. Not well presented and with strange tasting sprouts. Dry mushy peas, carrots had seen better days and no mashed potato or turnip, however I liked the leeks in gravy. The Yorkshire's were plentiful and ok. As we ate lots of people came in looking for lunch and the tables around us were quickly marked Reserved. They must be doing something right but I doubt we will return

We recently visited the above place for a Sunday lunch. We found the food of reasonable quality but cold ,I myself and people we went with found the food cold the Brussels under cooked .The Yorkshire puddings although plentiful were like cardboard as it was obvious they had been taken out of the oven quite a while ago. The meat was good but due the plates being smaller than normal dinner plates didn’t allow us to place the vegetables so you could eat your meal in a normal way. Instead most customers ended up with a plate of food that was not pleasing to the eye. The pub is very scruffy and worn with tables worn with furniture needing to be replaced. The price is reasonable but caters for clientele that are only interested in quantity not quality. We will not be going again as I like hot food that is presented in a pleasing way and not presented as if in a greasy spoon.

The young girl at the bar never smiled once, and appeared as if she really couldn't be bothered. All in all it's always been a 3 or 4 star rating due to the price value, but we've not been back in months and have no intention to again. Pub is small but very quaint. Small seating area inside not well lit. Conservatory area built on with more seating. Food is fresh and tastes fantastic. Reasonable priced. Clean and staff are very friendly and accommodating. Well worth a visit

My family and I have gone for meals here at least 5-6 times during the last 3 years. We have always gone with the carvery option and have never been disappointed: quick and tasty. In fact we went tonight and this prompted me to review the place: the beef was melt in your mouth tender. Relative to other carvery places the vegetables may be a bit lacking but everything else is top notch and great value. The main dining room is nice and sunny which adds to the appeal. I've never found staff to be anything but polite and helpful.

Sunday drive out; called in as we were passing as saw the carver sign for Sunday lunch. So glad we did. It was gorgeous. Had to wait 10-15 mins for a table as they were busy, but this is always a good sign. Three choices of meats; beef, turkey and gammon. Standard home made Yorkshires and a very good selection of potatoes and veg, that were replenished on a regular basis. Gravy was very tasty and everything was hot. Lovely friendly staff. We'd certainly go back if we're over that way again.

First time I have been in here for the best part of 20 years, vowed never to go back after a terrible meal back then. Some friends invited us to join then there for Sunday lunch. Pleased we went. We opted for the carvery, it was delicious and worth every penny. We will certainly go back and would recommend it to others.Other items on the menu locked delicious as well.

We decided to visit here as it had been a while since our last visit. The Coach and Horses does a carvery every single day. I would highly recommend it. Lovely choices of meat and vegetables. Only strange this is the mushy peas on a carvery. It's really good value for money and would recommend anyone to visit.

Carvery meat was fab, I had the beef which melted in the mouth ,others in the party had gammon or turkey which they stated was lovely. Vegetables were a mixed bag, sprouts were hard ,carrots were lovely and sweet. Would have been nice to have some mashed swede/turnip. Luscious gravy, rich and thick. Service was a bit grim as there were only two on the bar taking food orders but there were three stood at the entrance to the carvery ,maybe one of them could have helped with the orders/drinks as I'm sure people can quite easily find their own seats. Overall quite nice and the chef was lovely and friendly .

We were recommended by both friends and members of the family to try the Sunday carvery at The Coach & Horses on Butchers Race... from our experience I need to seriously evaluate our circle of friends! Upon arrival we attended the bar and ordered drinks, given we had never been to the venue we were unsure whether it was pay in advance or at the end of the meal. For all there were members of staff aimlessly wandering around, not one of them asked us if we were eating or just standing around like a lampposts in the main walkway of the pub as a leisurely excersise. We approached one of the members of staff and stated we wish to eat the so called "carvery" and she seated us to a table resembling something from old mother Hubbards house and left us to work the rest out for ourself. We proceeded to the display of "food" to find out we needed a token before we could actually get our hands on any; like we were going to run off with puddings under our arm. Back to the bar to queue for 2 meal tokens.Enter stage left disgruntled customer, stood in queue for the second time and exceptionally hungry; Presented in front of us was what can only be described as an abomination to British dinners. 3 meats for selection; Turkey (not even Christmas) Ham (like Saltburn sea) and Beef (no comment), if you like dumplings you will love the Yorkshire Puddings. The veg selection consisted of Roast Potatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, new potatoes, mushy peas and a selection of standard and onion gravy which I don't believe can be classed as a carvery. I can only assume that the village of Hett and the outer areas of Durham aren't aware of Cauliflower, stuffing, parsnips, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, sausages in bacon (hey, your putting turkey on, why not go the whole hog) chopped salad, garden peas, swede and don't even get me started on the mashed potato! That was an optional extra and the cost of £1.25... for potato! The core element of a standard dinner.Kick us while we were down, after collecting this disappointing and quite frankly shameful effort we had to find our own cutlery and attempt to eat this pitiful effort. We then had to return to the bar for a third time to pay for something that quite frankly was a waste of my time and money, however I am a firm believer in being constructive post criticism and I have personally taken the time to find you an alternative to your mashed potato issue. Many of our local high street supermarkets stock microwaveable potato at a fraction of the cost and still allowing you to make an adequate markup without charging a ludicrous price, and given your previous cooking demonstration it will probably be nicer as well.Be warned people!

Visited with friends for birthday meal out. Great selection of food both on the Menu and The specials Board. Also fantastic deal on the carvery in the Conservatory. I was surprised to see very few people but as there was a local football game I assumed people were at the match. Me and my husband went for the Steak and Ale pie, chips and vegetables, wow it looked FAB and TASTED as good as it looked. Our friends had The Carvery and at £10.95 for 2 great value, I was assured it tasted great. Excellent meal out, fantastic hearty grub, we will be back

Not had a problem until our last visit. I normally have the carvery while my son goes for the steak, this time however I thought I'd be adventurous and have the steak as well. Unfortunately that was a mistake :(I asked for one medium and one medium/well done, both were very overdone, dry, chewy and inedible. The nice young lady at the bar offered a refund but didn't seem surprised in the least. My friend took his wife for Sunday lunch today and found the same thing, his steak was tough and dry and even the usually excellent chips were terrible :(I don't know what's going on here, usually it's a safe choice for a good meal but somethings definitely not right.

We had a late lunch in the week after new year so was very quiet. Food was overall very good, we had pea and ham soup (delicious) fish and chips and rump steak. The steak was cooked rare as requested but had rather more sinew than normal. Hopefully chef will refer this to the supplier There was a group with learning difficulties having drinks and I noticed them being treated with respect and friendliness :-)

We went here for the first time this week. A family meal, 9 in total. If you like chips this is the place to go, absolutely loads of them. I had the 8oz steak, absolutely terrible. I have never had such a bland and tough steak. My father in law decided to take his home and braise it, but still couldn't eat it. I did complain to the waitress, she said she would speak to the chef, but no feed back. Will not be going back.

Lovely venue, clean and well presented. Super friendly and attentive staff. We were met and shown to our table by Mary I believe. Food was hot, well presented and good sized portions. And delicious. The young gentleman who served us was super polite and very pleasant, I believe his name was Brookton, he did a superb job the whole time we were there. This was a Christmas business lunch where we had all travelled a long way and met half way in Banbury, it was well worth the trip.

Went here today with my partner for lunch we both had the carvery which is on offer 2 for £10.98, wouldn't think I'd feel robbed at the price but the food was awful, could tell that the food had been under heat lamps for hours, the meat was dry, the carrots were grey around the edges, cabbage was dry and the peas were like concrete, the mash was lumpy, the Yorkshire puddings were pretty much flat and the roast potatoes tasted like frozen ones! How could so much be wrong with one meal? Also the drinks were flat, total waste of money won't be going back, on a plus note the barmaid Vicki was pleasant

As always such a friendly welcome as soon as you arrive, ordered our drinks and were shown to our table, having been before, and we love the starters, we decided not to order a starter and save ourselves for dessert. However, oh my the Roast Lamb (i had), and Roast Beef that my hubby had were just amazing! Loads of different vegetables and mine (the lamb) and my hubby's Beef were cooked to perfection.YUMMY! We didn't end up having any room left for dessert, such a shame. Fab Sunday Lunch would highly recommend. Thank you all at the Coach.
